Jody sounded great and so did Howard. together they had great chemistry. after Jody and jeffrey left the replacemnts in the group were horrible. actually they were never meant to do anything but "be there". at that point it was all Howard. But Jody kicked ass in her solo career with several crossover hits. Go Jody!
Dick Griffey played that "advance" game. Most artist get shafted this way. Most are in because they like performing, but have no sense of money, and no one to look out for their interests. I remember James Garner hiring a forensic accountant to look into royalties he felt he was owed, and in fact, he reaped millions. The bookkeeping that had been going on was salacious. Young folks, get a good lawyer, and read-up on how to make sure the lawyer is doing right by you as well.
Funny how Griffey stated in that botched up interview that he visioned star potential and sex appeal, yet, all the time kept his hand in the post, with his divide and conquer attitude, "I'll divide the group, conquer your bank account and place my bet on Howard!" Ha, that was a horse that lost the Derby! Lol.
Howard Hewitt had and probably still has a great voice; by all right he should've been a huge star, but all I remember is an album he did that came out on Elektra Records. His best single track (to my ears") was "For the Lover in You", a wonderful song and favorite off their album. I see some people dissing Jody Watley's singing but for years I have been a "club kid" and gone out dancing, and I've been a fan of Jody Watley throughout, and yes, she was ESSENTIAL to the Shalamar sound and image. I bought her solo album in the '80s and loved it,(we all did), and even quite recently she did a great re-make of Chic's "I Want Your Love". Bought that too and love it! I also heard "Right There in the Socket" a few weeks ago in a dance club here in L.A. and it set the floor on fire as always. Jody can be heard to great effect on that superbly arranged track as well. LOVE YA JODY!
Steven Kerry I believe 'For the Lover in You' was a Shalamar tune, as opposed to a Hewitt song. Howard did some nice songs with Stanley Clarke, including 'I'm For Real'.
Dick Griffey was a mentor for Suga Knight & helped launched Death Row records. He was an Angel!! LOL. Also Griffey's other protégé were Babyface & L.A Reid.. Laface records another crooked label!!
Watching this short Clip, after watching all 8 Jody Whatley's unfiltered you tube stuff, I am now sitting here with tears in my eyes. I love Shalamar. I have for 35 years, now I hear all this behind the scene stuff I never knew? I am so sad. I love Howard, Jeffrey, and Jody. Equally. Its like we grew up together. sometimes, you shouldn't see how they make the sausage. I love them still. For the Lover in you, I proposed to my then wife after listening to that beautiful song.
One of my favorite groups of the eighties. They had a special sweet and soulful vibe, and some wonderful and unforgettable dance songs.🌏🎹🎸🎷🎤🎧🎺🎼🎶🔊😎🍾🍸🏨🎹🎻👍👍👍

Man, I've heard stories about these singers getting swindled out of their money. Sam Cooke to Shalamar. You can't trust these guys in business because they'll take advantage of your talents and make money off of them without giving you anything.
Thats a damn shame. And they were one of my favorite groups. They needed an older , mature publicist & Attorney, A person to advocate & leader... To oversee their careers. Make certain they receive automobiles, 🏠 houses, etc .... invest to have whats needed for a set Future. And Jody had a child *( maybe that was after she left group) sad. Shame ....way their financial was mismanaged. 😑😐🤨 🤔
Shame it all fell apart. The managers etc thought they owned a manufactured group but at the end of the day the group had the identities and stage presence to attract higher rewards.
''The managers did think they owned the group...the same thing that happened to Otis Williams and the distance before he got the coolest supergroup in history together ''The Temptations.'' 😎😎😎
Artist didn't understand contracts back then, the intent was to provide the artist with exposure to build their own brand but the actual recording contract was always designed to benefit the record label, and it was nothing more than the artist voice being used for profit ✋😏🤚
Record label - Here’s a $1 million dollar advance mr artist to divide amongst yourselves The first album made $7 million but recording, promoting, touring and travel expenses was $20 million so you owe the record label $13 million Mr artist you you owe us so we can’t pay you no royalty check and you need to make a couple more albums to pay the record label those $13 million New albums make $50 million but now that you’re more famous the recording, promoting, touring and travel expenses was $75 million Mr artist you owe $25 million Rinse and repeat Meanwhile Artist always on the road getting travel expenses paid upfront but which must be recouped in the back Something like that

@Shay White, you said "the only people are to be blamed are themselves" was that a chop at Jody? What should she be blamed for exactly? Getting paid....FINALLY? Becoming a success? Winning a Grammy? Being the first female singer to million seller fitness video? The multi major magazine fashion layouts 15 to 20 years before the likes of Rhianna and Beyoncé ? Broadway star? Multi platinum albums (Jody Watley's, not Shalamar) ? Having a video that's remained MTV & VH1s most nominated and Top 100 videos of all time? Just a few to mention....which should she blame herself for? And about the public blaming Leon for the breakup is so far from the truth. In all honesty, I question Sylvers' SUDDEN departure with Watlet and Daniel's

Color doesn't really have any thing to do with it. They will rip off any one. The only color that matters is GREEN. So many people were ripped off over the years in the music industry. Read the book "hit men" it tells the whole story. Also, if you have talent NEVER win shows like American Idol. Go on shows like that for exposure ONLY. Never "win" it or you will be locked into a contract. It's an industry that takes advantage of the young and unaware. NEVER sign anything without taking to a music attorney FIRST or you will be sorry.
Problem is, if you don't sign it you will be dropped. Most artists only get one shot, but if you make your name then, you can reap some benefits for yourself afterwards. Jody at least had a leg-up when it came to her solo career, so it was still worth her doing Shalamar, bad contract and all
@@michaelleacy Sorry, but I must disagree regarding your comment about Jody. SHE said herself in the piece, she began to feel taken advantage of (and she was right...she was). Further, your comment "if you don't sign you will be dropped" I do not understand. "You will be dropped" FROM WHAT, You don't ANY relation with any company at that time, so how can they "drop you" if you never had a contract with them. DON'T BE "so eager to sign and thus foolish" This is where IF YOU BELIEVE IN YOURSELF you will tell them, fine, I believe in myself and will find someone who will respect ME, and move on. TOO MANY PEOPLE have signed BAD CONTRACTS and are later sorry. DON'T DO IT. If you have TRUE talent, it will be discovered and only a fool would walk away from it. Look out for YOURSELF, have respect for yourself and NEGOTIATE fair contract.
''Their record label definitely took advantage of them and set them up on a 90/10 employment contract...instead of a 50/50 partnership or make the contract fairer, this is what Prince was talking about during his day.'' 🤔🤔🤔🤔
@Barbara Vire, if Howard's voice was the winning formula for Shalamar why didn't it continue after the departure of Watley? Not only did the public continue yearning for Watley, so did our public officials that requested command performance for two Presidents and a First Lady, least we not forget, a Grammy!
@Barbara Vire, just what is it that a Jody was full of? Do you know her personally to say so? You sound very hate filled of someone you DONT know. Is it personal? Mmm.... What isit you agree with Barbara about? We all love Howard, but he wasn't the group, he was just a singer, just like the other three that took to make Shalamar
@Barbara Vire, maybe oblivion was the wrong adjective used maybe the word NONEXISTANT is the better choice of word. A singer who works constantly does not equate success, it just proves he has a light bill to pay. Jody on the other hand seem to have consistently remained successful from her debut solo album to her resent ky release CD 'OARADISE' which spun a Top 5 single, 'NIGHTLIFE' which featured another Shalamar alumnus, Gerald Brown. My thing is, if Howard's voice is so great, why hasn't it been the saving grace for his own career before, and after Shalamar? Just saying! ^_^ Hahahahaha!
Adriane Harris you are so right at all you said, and what's more sadder than being treated as a Slave by the slave master is when the Slave escapes from the plantation, only to return as Jeffrey and Howard did to work with the Master's Offbreed, Pathetic, I say!

Let’s not forget berry Gordy you would think a black owned label would be looking out for it artists especially during that time a lotta artists and musicians went broke if you get a chance watch the bio of the funk brothers they were the musicians that played on just about every Motown track from the Jackson five to Marvin Gaye and smoky Robinson if you look at all the album credits under Motown records they were call the corporation it was the same musicians from the sixties and seventies they got paid per studio section no royalties they would have to snick and do other gigs to servive if Gordy found out he would fire them I think there’s only one or two still alive they said imagine sitting somewhere and you hear a Motown song hear that baseline knowing that song made millions and you on it that you playing the instrument and you were paid just for the section they got nothing else the ones that died died broke remember the bass line to my girl by the temptations there was on looping back then that was repeated over and over again by hand the entire song can you imagine that. Check it out

barbara vire Where did Jody ever state she had any admiration for Hewett? In fact, it's Howard who admitted he was attracted to Jody Watley, or did you watch the entire episode of Unsung/Shalamar? Try Googling Jacky Jasper/Hollywood street king...there's some nice little goodies there waiting there especially for someone like you. You'll be greatly surprised, then again, from reading some of your comments, the gutter seem more like home for you! Happy reading. Tata! :)
Its so sad how these managers suck the blood out of the artist, not even being fair or even considering them as people but slaves. Slaves work for free.
barbara vire ***** at least barbara vire had the decency to thank you for your comment, regardless of how shady. No class! I'd like to know what is the prerequisite that substantiate a great singer? One who does 150 vocal runs very Four measures? Opera singers who crack glass singing the 'A' note above the D# major 7th? Tell me what is your opinion of a great singer! Howard didn't make Shalamar contrary to public belief. Shalamar had hits long before Howard was asked to become a REPLACEMENT- "Take that to the bank" anyone? Nice you purchased your records because of Howard, I'm glad the real world bought Shalamar music for the love of the group!
Right! "Great" singing is SO, SO, SO much more than runs, the highest notes, and vocal acrobatics! Great background singers bring out the VERY best in an already great lead vocalist, let alone, a mediocre or poor one! Harmonies are the sweetest, prettiest thing EVER produced from human sound-period! Singing in perfect harmony sounds like one beautifully layered voice. A thing from God, really. ANY lead singer, from the greatest to the tone deafest(this really IS a word)knows harmonious background vocalists only make them better and are VERY much appreciated! A great many of our greatest vocalists have the same background singers they had from the beginning of their careers! P.S. I KNOW that was a LONG one!❤
barbara vire Jody's full of "it"? How so? You care to elaborate on your claim? You seem very bias in your opinion of someone you don't know. I think you need to check her history, learn it. Google is your friend!
I know this is a old post but I'm seeing these comment and laughing yall praising Jody watley like she made this group successful but really Howard and his voice made this group successful if not for him Jeffery n Jody and Gerald brown wouldn't last as a disco group that's why Howard is the voice and will remain the voice of shalamar and second it's funny Jody said bad business when she herself slept with the lead producer in Leon sylvers now that's bad business so blaming Howard hewett for the group breakup is stupid and Jody had a great solo career only in the 80s yea she had success but what happen in the 90s n 00s lmao
Howard Hewett was the signature sound of Shalamar, Jody was more of a complimentary act in the Late '70s and Early '80s with Shalamar. Howard was what primarily made listeners pick up a Shalamar record during that particular time. Most of this revisionist rhetoric comes from the fact that Jody Watley is a bigger musical act than Shalamar. She also still maintained her career with eight Top 5 singles on the U.S. Dance Charts throughout the '90s and '00s.
Her ambition, especially the baby is a page right out of Diane Ross’s book of getting to the top. Lots of boyfriends, but know who to get pregnant by. I will believe Leon was in love with her when he says it! She was dogged but life was kind to her later. She was big in an era where great singing was no longer the key to a successful career. It’s fashion, drama, being excitable. It opened the door for mediocre talents like Brittany Spears to Cardi B. You have to give it to her strong ambitions, though. I was never a fan, though.
People are always blaming Howard Hewett,Leon Sylvers the 3rd,Jeffrey Daniel and the late Richard "Dick" Griffey for causing Ms.Jody Watley to quit the group, the only people they need to blame is theirselves so leave Mr.Daniel,Leon "Boogie Fever" Sylvers 3rd,the late Mr.Griffey aka Carolyn Griffey's late father and Howard Hewett Jr. alone.
Maybe you should hear the word of Ms. Jody Watley speak of the verbal mental and physical abuse that she endure while as a member. Her interview may give you some perspective.
No one has ever blamed Leon Sylvers III for the demise of Shalamar. Can you prove your words to be true? But, on the other hand, the group did falter from underhandedness of Hewett and Griffey, so the blame is placed on the correct Doorstep... Just watch were step, cause wet shit is slippery!
alicen wonderworld Just so you and you tubers know Shay White is a troll with an online Jody Watley vendetta bias and constantly posts fake Shalamar information
+Shay White I have to agree with the mass collection under your post. When did the public ever Blame Leon Sylvers for the ending of trio? On the Unsung episode Dick Griffey, Carolyn Baldwin's Stepfather admitted he (personally) hand delivered (Giving over) Howard (Not he, Jody nor Jeffrey) a Million dollars advancement against the group's royalty. Are you insinuating there was not a bias played against Jody and Jeffrey that widened the trio's division by Griffey. The devil is never innocent!
I'm going to say this and I hope people will understand me when I say this.Howard Hewett and Jody Watley was excellent singers on their own so much in fact that they really have great chemistry and at the same time if they decide to go solo they could and they did and they were much better solo as they were when they were together as a group Shalamar and not to leave out Jeffrey Daniel but he was a good dancer good dancer no he was an excellent dancer how do you think Michael Jackson was able to learn the moonwalk? He learned it from Jeffrey Daniels and the lockers.
jody isn't that good of singer! sorry it was Howard that made that group? period! are you crazy, I bought those records because of Howard? Thank you! elvis McCartney!!
An advance is not a royalty. Artists have to pay all of that back. What a way to swindle people out of their coins. This story is as old as time
Facts. Advance is basically a loan. You have to pay that money back via record sales
These days. It's best to go independent. The record companies are greedy and corrupt.
In my heart ❤Jody, Howard and Jeffrey will ALWAYS be Shalamar. 🤗💞

Check it out
Can't be buying all sorts of drugs and have liquor sent by room service. I always buy buddig sandwich meat, and Bimbo cheap bread when im on tour. I only spend 7 dollars a week while i'm in different cities and countries during my concerts. Thats why im a billionaire
barbara vire Where did Jody ever state she had any admiration for Hewett? In fact, it's Howard who admitted he was attracted to Jody Watley, or did you watch the entire episode of Unsung/Shalamar? Try Googling Jacky Jasper/Hollywood street king...there's some nice little goodies there waiting there especially for someone like you. You'll be greatly surprised, then again, from reading some of your comments, the gutter seem more like home for you! Happy reading. Tata! :)
He was suge knight before suge knight
I had a friend in a band called delegation, top of the pops 3 times , 3 top 40 hits in the 70s , earnt nothing.
I remember Delegation they had that hit Oh Honey
They never outsold Wembley. Still telling that old lie!
+tara3870 WOW!!!
No it was Wembly ...the smaller arena.
And you know Management initiated that lie......
That was Publicity.....
Not the group .
barbara vire Jody's full of "it"? How so? You care to elaborate on your claim? You seem very bias in your opinion of someone you don't know. I think you need to check her history, learn it. Google is your friend!
damn damn damn o yea and why why why
The Shalamar Split according to Jeffrey Daniel in 1983 shalamaronline.blogspot.com/2013/07/jeffrey-daniel-spills-beans-on-shalamar.html
The devil is never innocent!
not hardly please!!!! quit the lie jody full of it?
I'm going to say this and I hope people will understand me when I say this.Howard Hewett and Jody Watley was excellent singers on their own so much in fact that they really have great chemistry and at the same time if they decide to go solo they could and they did and they were much better solo as they were when they were together as a group Shalamar and not to leave out Jeffrey Daniel but he was a good dancer good dancer no he was an excellent dancer how do you think Michael Jackson was able to learn the moonwalk? He learned it from Jeffrey Daniels and the lockers.
NO IT WAS NOT NO JODY! BECAUSE JODY CAN'T SING THAT WELL NOT LIKE THE LIKES OF HOWARE? YOUR JUST JEALOUS? THATS ALL YOU NO BODY!
jody isn't that good of singer! sorry it was Howard that made that group? period! are you crazy, I bought those records because of Howard? Thank you! elvis McCartney!!
