An advance is not a royalty. Artists have to pay all of that back. What a way to swindle people out of their coins. This story is as old as time

Facts. Advance is basically a loan. You have to pay that money back via record sales

Jody sounded great and so did Howard. together they had great chemistry. after Jody and jeffrey left the replacemnts in the group were horrible. actually they were never meant to do anything but "be there". at that point it was all Howard. But Jody kicked ass in her solo career with several crossover hits. Go Jody!

Dick Griffey played that "advance" game. Most artist get shafted this way. Most are in because they like performing, but have no sense of money, and no one to look out for their interests. I remember James Garner hiring a forensic accountant to look into royalties he felt he was owed, and in fact, he reaped millions. The bookkeeping that had been going on was salacious. Young folks, get a good lawyer, and read-up on how to make sure the lawyer is doing right by you as well.

Funny how Griffey stated in that botched up interview that he visioned star potential and sex appeal, yet, all the time kept his hand in the post, with his divide and conquer attitude, "I'll divide the group, conquer your bank account and place my bet on Howard!" Ha, that was a horse that lost the Derby! Lol.

Howard Hewitt had and probably still has a great voice; by all right he should've been a huge star, but all I remember is an album he did that came out on Elektra Records. His best single track (to my ears") was "For the Lover in You", a wonderful song and favorite off their album. I see some people dissing Jody Watley's singing but for years I have been a "club kid" and gone out dancing, and I've been a fan of Jody Watley throughout, and yes, she was ESSENTIAL to the Shalamar sound and image. I bought her solo album in the '80s and loved it,(we all did), and even quite recently she did a great re-make of Chic's "I Want Your Love". Bought that too and love it! I also heard "Right There in the Socket" a few weeks ago in a dance club here in L.A. and it set the floor on fire as always. Jody can be heard to great effect on that superbly arranged track as well. LOVE YA JODY!

The first album made $7 million but recording, promoting, touring and travel expenses was $20 million so you owe the record label $13 million
Mr artist you you owe us so we can’t pay you no royalty check and you need to make a couple more albums to pay the record label those $13 million
New albums make $50 million but now that you’re more famous the recording, promoting, touring and travel expenses was $75 million
Mr artist you owe $25 million

@Shay White, you said "the only people are to be blamed are themselves" was that a chop at Jody? What should she be blamed for exactly? Getting paid....FINALLY? Becoming a success? Winning a Grammy? Being the first female singer to million seller fitness video? The multi major magazine fashion layouts 15 to 20 years before the likes of Rhianna and Beyoncé ? Broadway star? Multi platinum albums (Jody Watley's, not Shalamar) ? Having a video that's remained MTV & VH1s most nominated and Top 100 videos of all time? Just a few to mention....which should she blame herself for? And about the public blaming Leon for the breakup is so far from the truth. In all honesty, I question Sylvers' SUDDEN departure with Watlet and Daniel's

Color doesn't really have any thing to do with it. They will rip off any one. The only color that matters is GREEN. So many people were ripped off over the years in the music industry. Read the book "hit men" it tells the whole story. Also, if you have talent NEVER win shows like American Idol. Go on shows like that for exposure ONLY. Never "win" it or you will be locked into a contract. It's an industry that takes advantage of the young and unaware. NEVER sign anything without taking to a music attorney FIRST or you will be sorry.

@@michaelleacy Sorry, but I must disagree regarding your comment about Jody. SHE said herself in the piece, she began to feel taken advantage of (and she was right...she was). Further, your comment "if you don't sign you will be dropped" I do not understand. "You will be dropped" FROM WHAT, You don't ANY relation with any company at that time, so how can they "drop you" if you never had a contract with them. DON'T BE "so eager to sign and thus foolish" This is where IF YOU BELIEVE IN YOURSELF you will tell them, fine, I believe in myself and will find someone who will respect ME, and move on. TOO MANY PEOPLE have signed BAD CONTRACTS and are later sorry. DON'T DO IT. If you have TRUE talent, it will be discovered and only a fool would walk away from it. Look out for YOURSELF, have respect for yourself and NEGOTIATE fair contract.

A singer who works constantly does not equate success, it just proves he has a light bill to pay. Jody on the other hand seem to have consistently remained successful from her debut solo album to her resent ky release CD 'OARADISE' which spun a Top 5 single, 'NIGHTLIFE' which featured another Shalamar alumnus, Gerald Brown. My thing is, if Howard's voice is so great, why hasn't it been the saving grace for his own career before, and after Shalamar? Just saying! ^_^ Hahahahaha!

Tell me what is your opinion of a great singer! Howard didn't make Shalamar contrary to public belief. Great background singers bring out the VERY best in an already great lead vocalist, let alone, a mediocre or poor one! Harmonies are the sweetest, prettiest thing EVER produced from human sound-period! Singing in perfect harmony sounds like one beautifully layered voice. A thing from God, really. ANY lead singer, from the greatest to the tone deafest(this really IS a word)knows harmonious background vocalists only make them better and are VERY much appreciated! A great many of our greatest vocalists have the same background singers they had from the beginning of their careers!
      P.S. I KNOW that was a LONG one!❤

I know this is a old post but I'm seeing these comment and laughing yall praising Jody watley like she made this group successful but really Howard and his voice made this group successful if not for him Jeffery n Jody and Gerald brown wouldn't last as a disco group that's why Howard is the voice and will remain the voice of shalamar and second it's funny Jody said bad business when she herself slept with the lead producer in Leon sylvers now that's bad business so blaming Howard hewett for the group breakup is stupid and Jody had a great solo career only in the 80s yea she had success but what happen in the 90s n 00s lmao

Howard Hewett was the signature sound of Shalamar, Jody was more of a complimentary act in the Late '70s and Early '80s with Shalamar. Howard was what primarily made listeners pick up a Shalamar record during that particular time. Most of this revisionist rhetoric comes from the fact that Jody Watley is a bigger musical act than Shalamar. She also still maintained her career with eight Top 5 singles on the U.S. Dance Charts throughout the '90s and '00s.

Her ambition, especially the baby is a page right out of Diane Ross’s book of getting to the top. Lots of boyfriends, but know who to get pregnant by. I will believe Leon was in love with her when he says it! She was dogged but life was kind to her later. She was big in an era where great singing was no longer the key to a successful career. It’s fashion, drama, being excitable. It opened the door for mediocre talents like Brittany Spears to Cardi B. You have to give it to her strong ambitions, though. I was never a fan, though.

People are always blaming Howard Hewett,Leon Sylvers the 3rd,Jeffrey Daniel and the late Richard "Dick" Griffey for causing Ms.Jody Watley to quit the group, the only people they need to blame is theirselves so leave Mr.Daniel,Leon "Boogie Fever" Sylvers 3rd,the late Mr.Griffey aka Carolyn Griffey's late father and Howard Hewett Jr. alone.

Maybe you should hear the word of Ms. Jody Watley speak of the verbal mental and physical abuse that she endure while as a member. Her interview may give you some perspective.

No one has ever blamed Leon Sylvers III for the demise of Shalamar. Can you prove your words to be true? But, on the other hand, the group did falter from underhandedness of Hewett and Griffey, so the blame is placed on the correct Doorstep... Just watch were step, cause wet shit is slippery!

+Shay White I have to agree with the mass collection under your post. When did the public ever Blame Leon Sylvers for the ending of trio? On the Unsung episode Dick Griffey, Carolyn Baldwin's Stepfather admitted he (personally) hand delivered (Giving over) Howard (Not he, Jody nor Jeffrey) a Million dollars advancement against the group's royalty. Are you insinuating there was not a bias played against Jody and Jeffrey that widened the trio's division by Griffey. The devil is never innocent!

I'm going to say this and I hope people will understand me when I say this.Howard Hewett and Jody Watley was excellent singers on their own so much in fact that they really have great chemistry and at the same time if they decide to go solo they could and they did and they were much better solo as they were when they were together as a group Shalamar and not to leave out Jeffrey Daniel but he was a good dancer good dancer no he was an excellent dancer how do you think Michael Jackson was able to learn the moonwalk? He learned it from Jeffrey Daniels and the lockers.
