Good video dude!!
If a turkey baster is too big, use a pump off a lotion bottle, pump it into a bottle or bowl, took me 10 minutes to fully drain it xs but worth it
Thank you for your knowledge and teaching sir.
You're very welcome.
*WHY IN THE HELL THEY PUT THE POWER STEEING RESERVOIR IN THERE* ?
The Engineer REALLY likes Hide-and-Seek.
That's what I'm saying... That's a stupid location
So you can take it to a shop
what about all the old fluid in the hydrualic steering rack ,that you are now mixing withe a totally different fluid, I agree it should be changed, but man go the full lap and have the power steering pump push it out (Eng. ON) while someone is inside turnining the steering wheel lock to lock several times while you are constantly filling with the new fluid, and you will positivity have a fresh fluid change without the worry of mixing old degraded fluid with a whole different type.
dneitzke • good idea... It's been doing really good since but yea the more old out the better!
So how is it running now, I want to do my 11" R/T has some scares recently
steven mccrorey ~ Like a charm. Thanks for watching.
Can I do this to my 2012 charger SE ? mechanic said there is no power steering fluid for my car
Yes.
why was your fluid black? mine is too...is there contaminant in it? I had a ford and the dealer said that ps hoses break down over time. I'm wondering if this is the case with my pump. the rack is losing fluid at the outer seals
I'd assume it is from friction and it breaking down over time just like how engine oil darkens. Any air (especially high-humidity-air = contaminant) in there can make it worse too. Technically you're supposed to use a vacuum hand pump when changing it to remove as much air as possible .. but since I didn't turn on the car and cycle the fluid I don't think it hurt it much to not use the pump.
This might be a dumb question but would the power steering pump seal located in that area too ? My seal just fell out my car but I’m trying to figure out where it goes.
Yes, the pump is connected to the reservoir that's shown in this video.
Hey Mr. Ficks,
I just came across your video. I have a 2012 Charger SE. It stutters when making slow left turns. I took it to a Tires Plus and they said i would need to take this to a dealership to have the fluid pumped out. I see that you used a syringe to drain it all out. What about the fluid in the steering column itself? How can i get that out? Or does it need to be pumped out?
A vacuum pump is the book method but this method works too. I've had no issues since. You can get a bit more to fill the resivior by turning the wheels lock to lock, after your first removal. I wouldn't recommend doing it with the car on though because it may introduce air into the lines. (Vacuum pump is the best method for that reason.. No air)
@@mrficks1838 Thank you. I plan to do this come this coming weekend as long as it stops snowing. I really appreciate your video and quick response. I'll let you know how it goes.
I got an issue when I turn the wheel is not hard but is makes a squeaky noise when I turn both sides that's also mean my power steeling right?
Yes that sounds like it's coming from the power steering.
I thought the newer Challengers 11 and up had a electronic power steering I have a 13 RT Challenger and my steering keeps locking up sometimes when I'm trying to make quick turns like u turns I hope I have this instead of the electric but I'm not sure I'll get down there and check and see but I hope so
kmoney2008 • sounds like a fluid issue.
kmoney2008 ....did it work for u?
Can you use the same retainer clips ?
Yes but be careful because they're weathered and brittle.
I hv a ques why did u do that is it just bcuz u care too much abt ur car or is it bcuz u had a problem and u were fixing it cuz i own a 2013 one and my steering wheel is stiff does that hv anything to do with it
Alhanoof Alsheiti • I heard some small creaking noises on deep turns and this fixed it. Although this Royal Purple fluid has made it so much smoother than before I'd change it even without noises. Your problem could be the fluid so I'd change it and see. It could be other things too. And it's good to care about your car 😂. Thanks for watching.
Is taking the tire off the only way to get to the power steering?
To the fluid tank, yes.
how do you know the level if it’s on the min n max the reservoir is not transparent
Use a ruler or some type of wick that you can measure from the darkening of the wick from hitting the fluid to the lip of your reservoir.
I did this method and my car turns smooth to the right but its still kinda tough going to the left??? Would you happen to know why?
Could be the suspension (tie rod) or there's air in the line.
after 4 years I finally found my thank you
SuperWatson63 ~ You're welcome.. thanks for thanking haha.
Mr Ficks I've been diligent every 3000 miles to change the oil how often would you recommend changing the power steering fluid as well as the rest of the fluid 2013 Dodge Charger SE 3.6 thank you
Mr Ficks I have 70,000 miles on it
SuperWatson63 ~ I'd change the rear diff fluid if you haven't yet at 70k. (I have a video on that too). Trans around every 30k give or take 5k-10k-ish if majority is heavy city miles or more relaxed highway. Not sure on this Royal Purple- Power Steering fluid but I'll guess over 100k. The book doesn't mention brake fluid schedule but says to check for contamination by putting some fluid in a glass jar and if it separates into 2 layers then it's time to flush..... Thanks for watching.
SuperWatson63 ~ Oh and if your coolant looks clean and stays that way then I'd say let it go until around 100k miles.. I flushed and changed mine at 72k because it was filled with corrosion.
Can I use Prestone power steering fluid on my 2012 Dodge charger SE V6?
Yeah you could get away with that. Just see what it says about mixing with the old fluid. In a perfect world you'd change it all out but it should be ok with some mixing. Try to get a hand pump on it with an insert to suck the air out with the car off. Turn the wheels all the way on both sides (lock to lock) also with the car off.

Hopefully you see this lol , but I have a 2012 Dodge Charger & recently I’ve been having issues when driving & turning left or even right at times on yields or green lights . Would you recommend I change the power steering fluid first & see if that fixes issue or would it have something to do with the brack & pinion assembly ? Any other pointers you can give before I just go buy that assembly .
If you're getting vibrations check the inner tie rods and the boots on them for leakage. If it's intermittent response issues then try the fluid first for sure... It could be a number of things but I'd start there. (Seeing fluid leakage would be a time to get concerned about the assembly.. Until then I'd worry about the fluid replacement and suspension first.)
Also if possible use a vacuum pump on the fluid reservoir to remove as much air out of the system as you can.
Well I got curious what Amazon had the assembly priced at .. Cheaper than I thought -- In case it helps here's the link - amzn.to/3KDdtrK
How did you know you needed to change the power steering? Did the steering wheel when making left turns (u-turn) get super hard?? That's what mine is doing.
If I remember it was slightly stiff when turning but I believe I was looking at the recommended change intervals and just decided to do it a bit early.
You may have a suspension issue. Tie rod perhaps. I would take off the wheel and investigate.
@@mrficks1838 thanks for the feedback!
B C Hey my car is doing the same thing ... did u find out wat it was ?
@@undercoverrt4106 no, I havent taken the time to investigate yet. Now my car feels like it has a "bowling ball" in the trunk/rear axle area when I accelerate from a stop. If that makes sense? SMH it's not one thing, it's another.
You find the problem? Mine does the same if I accelerate turning left or uturn it stiffens up and it’s hard to turn
Easier and better to disconnect the return hose, use a vacuum cap on the pump, with both sides raised turn steering wheel right and left, that drains the system then refill turn the wheel to prime system top off and your done.
👍
The placement of this component is extremely convenient! Why didn’t I think to place it on the back side of hell next to a dumpster fire?!?!?
It's annoying for sure. Thanks for watching!
how many bottles did you need to change the fluid?
Luis Bustamante - just the one.. but it was just enough.. probably be smart to buy 2.
Mr Ficks alright, thank you
Luis Bustamante - You're Welcome.. Thanks for watching, Luis.
Do you think is the same for a Dodge ram 1500 2013
No its in the engine bay ... this video will show you how - www.carcarekiosk.com/video/2012_Ram_1500_SLT_5.7L_V8_Crew_Cab_Pickup/power_steering_fluid/check_fluid_level
Thankyou 😊
My Truck doesn't have that
Rebeca Carrasco • You're welcome... you probably have an electric power steering setup rather than Hydraulic (fluid).. Which is shown in both videos. You can call your dealership with your VIN to verify that.. Also I'm not sure on the maintenance of that type of setup but it won't have a fluid reservoir to worry about.
Whsts the name of the plug for revoir
I don't have the service manual to look it up right now but sometimes they call them pigtails or just connectors .. you can call/email a Dealer Location with your VIN # and they can look up the particular wire/connector part number.
Thank you for going through the trouble of making the video and bringing it to us, but isn't the power steering system at least a 3 quarts capacity?
No, it's 16 ounces. (Half a Quart)
hello can you help me
I accidentally dropped a rubber tube so small I can't get it out
, I asked a specialized person and he answered me that there is no danger it contains a filter, is this true?
I would trust his statement of there being a filter but I don't know. You can also try to fish it out with a long pick - amzn.to/3miY6Li
Ok.. Yes it has a filter - www.autozone.com/filters-and-pcv/power-steering-filter/p/duralast-power-steering-filter-70702/13909_0_0#bv_PDPReviews
Thank you very much I was worried about that, thanks for the help
Hi is there a trick to getting the cap off? Mine turns slightly right and slightly left but stops in either direction. Can’t turn it to take it off
Mine was easy. I'd try some silicone spray and let it sit a minute. You might want to buy a replacement cap just in case if yours has degraded and breaks when you take it off. Try heating it with a heat gun on very low setting or a rag with really hot water soaked in it. Silicone spray first though.
Oh and make sure you dry it first before opening if you heat it with a rag... You don't want any water in that reservoir.
Thank you for the tips. I’m gonna try again tomorrow all I accomplished today was getting nasty blisters on my hands lol
I may have a bigger problem on my hands like the pump or the rack. Power steering completely gone and service light for it lit up on my dash.
Could dodge have placed this thing in any harder to reach place it’s like getting into Fort Knox damn Mopar……
Can I use the same power steering fluid for my 2013 300 v6
Yes
If you don’t drain the rack it’s self the fluids will be mixed
Yes and that's why it's important to use a fluid that is compatible and will handle mixing like the one used here. No issues since the change. Thanks for the comment.
Looks like my 2017 s xt doesn't have a reservoir. I checked in the engine bay and remove both wheels and couldn't find anything on either side! 🤔🤔🤔
Yours is electrical only then.
I should just be able to use ATF+4 right?
It probably would be fine but since I don't know enough about it I'm gonna suggest you follow the book which says - "We recommend you use MOPAR Hydraulic Fluid or equivalent meeting
MS-11655, such as Fuchs EG ZH 3044 or Pentosin CHF 11s."
Here's the link for it - amzn.to/2yuEeg4
A guy in the Amazon comments said it's the same as ATF 4 but I didn't look into it.
