  • I was invited to take part in the 100th episode of Vatican Radio's weekly program Anima Latina hosted by Fabio Colagrande and Maria Milvia Morciano, where I was asked to comment why people on the internet have taken such an interest in the Latin language, and I even got to sing a song I translated into Latin. Which song? Watch to find out!

      @@An-mei - it’s not being suppressed, it’s fading (at least in religious contexts) due to natural processes of convenience. I’m a Latin speaker _and_ not a Christian but even I know that changing the sermons to the vernacular languages was necessary to slow down the dwindling of interest for church services. So that was that, but the fading of Latin in the vatican just followed because of its limited use even there. Is that sad? Sure. Bit it isn’t “being suppressed”.

    • @An-mei
      @An-mei Před rokem +6

      @@MensHominis That is not so. It is not allowed. It was stopped in our area. That is going to change though. Where the church is growing in vocations is where the Latin Mass is allowed. There are extremes though. What the pope finds distasteful is in that I think. You don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. I have to start authentic classes. I'm traveling right now so it's hard. I find it discouraging when people I listen to very so much in pronunciation. 🤔
      Duolingo is okay for a start but I am not drawn like I was with other languages. I don't try to speak it. In Church the few times we use it I can sing but those times are just becoming non existent! I fell in love with listening to JPII and I realized he had a heavy accent himself.

      @@An-mei - yes, and why did the church change the rules? To go with modernity … pragmatism. The protestants have done so hundreds of years earlier and it was to their advantage. Just yesterday I read that even during Charlemagne’s time, they allowed sermons in the vernacular in the Frankish Empire because ordinary people already understood far too little Latin with their Old-French and Old-Occitan ears, not to mention the (partly only recently-converted) Germanic language speakers.

    • @jasonbaker2370
      @jasonbaker2370 Před rokem +4

      @@marcogiuliocamurri both those languages definitely help. Some words between Spanish and Latin are even the exact same words. Te amo siempre ---> Tē amõ semper. Being familiar with cases from German also helps with the whole mindset of cases. Latin definitely takes the whole case system to the next level though. Another thing I I found interesting was German had been the only language I ever studied where you learn the principle parts of verbs together (sprechen sprach gesprochen spricht, etc.) so it was an fun surprise when I learned that it was normal to learn them in Latin as well amö amäre amåvī amãtum etc. Also knowing how to properly pronounce Spanish vowels helped with Latin pronunciation.

      I noticed that later in the video. I think you beat yourself over it. But, like, to be asked to sing on the spot, a capella, without having a few moments to refresh, while on public radio, without being forewarned in a language like Latin is something I doubt even their veterans would want to attempt.
      I could see the respect you got from the entire team, in spite of what you thought was a big mistake. I played piano when I was younger, and the biggest thing I was taught about public performance was how to stay cool, calm and collected after making a big mistake in the middle of a public performance and playing on... Which is exactly what you achieved.
      The fact you were brave enough to show us the live footage raw, without attempting to edit out the mistake, and actually apologising for it instead of trying to justify it literally impresses me by your attitude alone. It's very professional. You're the kind of guy I feel like who has everything to gain from experience, who can crash and burn, and just get up and try again, except with a better plan for next time, and far more resilient.
      Kudos! Which, if what I heard was accurate, just means praise in Greek. But I'm sure you know that already.

    Hey Luke! Speaking of Latin songs, for your next pop culture analysis, could you look at two Latin songs by Japanese composer Nobuo Uematsu? Made for video games, they are the main theme for Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Advent: One Winged Angel. There is another, older version of One Winged Angel but apparently those lyrics were taken out of a compilation called Carmina Burana; this Advent version has original lyrics. They are sung by Japanese speakers in the Ecclesiastical pronunciation, so I'm curious about the quality of writing and speech!
    Correction: Advent was made for a movie based off a video game. Original however was made for a game... Getting them mixed up. :p

    Super impressive. I wonder how these Latin speakers do it. Syntactically, Latin, the Mother Tongue, is much more difficult than the Romance languages which she engendered. Is there some sort of trick to making a "dead language" flow like they do?

    You should do a video about how autistic people make up a significant portion of the classical and fringe language (elvish, klingon, etc.) learning population, and why they don't have the same proportions when looking at common language (Spanish, English, French, German, etc.) learning populations. Thank you!
