I honestly believe there’s a stigma around children and harnesses/leashes because it mirrors how dogs are walked. The bottom line is it promotes safety for children which people tend to forget, so I’m all for it

I tend not to use a leash on my son I usually have him in a wagon though! He hates the leashes since he was like 1 years old. But I find it absolutely okay for parents to use them as long as the kid is okay with it and Ezra seems perfectly fine. ❤😊

I got one for my boy. He is a lot like Ezra. My boy will soon be 3 .I definitely can't let him out the stroller without a leash, because he doesn't speak... As any child, he is curious and drawn to anything.. he slowly starts to drift away from me 💔

I took my kiddo(nonverbalAsd) out to chic fil a yesterday. It was just him and I. He got up an ran. That hadn’t happened before - it totally took me off guard! He did it twice and then I was like, yep time to go. Lol ….So a million times yes to the kiddo leash. People can look and judge all they want. Walk a mile in our shoes!!

I am an elderly lady in England. We didn't have leashes when I was young, but reins were standard for toddlers when out. I used to swing on mine until my mother told me I was getting too heavy to do that, and to walk. Hahaha.
There was hardly any traffic then, either.
I had my eldest in the mid 70's. He definitely needed reins up until he was almost 4 years old. On the border between over and hyperactive. He lacked a sense of danger. He used to swing on his, too. Roads were far more busy by then.
My next two didn't need them at all. They would both hold my hand and if I needed to tele out my purse, I could say to hold on to the pushchair or my skirt and they would. I still had reins out away though, just in case either of them went through a phase of being overly lively when out, but they never did - except in parks and places where they were allowed to run about freely (most days even when cold, unless it was raining).
Of course it isn't treating them like a dog. I don't know why some silly people think that. It's more worrying when I see small children running far ahead or a long way behind their mothers, who are often too busy chatting to each other to even notice.
We do what we need to do so they will be safe, regardless of whether or not they have autism or are hyper, and anyone who doesn't is plain irresponsible, tbh.
Children and young people need an outlet for their energy or they go a bit bananas, but anywhere not totally safe then reins if necessary.

The harness is for his safety. Autistic kids have been found drowned because they are attracted to water I'm not but I am higher functioning ignore what people say to you about leashes.

Stigmas are dumb. I’ve never heard anyone putting their kid on a leash to just put their kid on a leash. It is always for safety if someone has a problem with another trying to keep their kid safe they’re the problem not the parent that has their child on a leash.

Yes, Ezra has a hard time with any water on him. That is why we lost him for a bit at his Autism Preschool reunion, I think someone sprayed him, he got upset and he ran away from us.
I think it’s fine I can see Ezra knows that he has a hard time staying close so he knows the leash will give him freedom to be outside. He seems to feel safer with it and happy when you put it on

Erzas safety is important so pro leach for him. I actually bought a leach for my son but didn’t use it because we practiced a lot and now he holds our hands. My inlaws watch him every week but are scared to go to the playground. Because they can’t run. I believe if you stay close to my son(who is a lot like Simon) you can learn them to don’t run into the street and hold your hands. Ezra is going to learn this too but he needs more time and that’s ok too. ❤❤❤

Thank you for a lovely video, what amazing scenery where you where walking! The use of a leash or reins as we call them in the uk is essential for a toddler or older child who needs them. I think you are very wise to use them for Ezra, he clearly feels safe and connected to you, without having to have his hand held. It’s a fantastic way to give him the freedom to walk independent yet keep him safe from harm. He clearly enjoys the out door! Simon is coming on so much with his speech.

Have you thought about modifying a dog harness for the use here, they are built for dogs who pull hard, etc, many have padding, neoprene, etc., a shoe repair person could help you make needed refinements. Also, they have an ex-large Flexi retractable lead available now that has a tape instead of a thin rope making it more visible. As you can tell I work and train dogs, as in both our cases it's all about their safety.

The leash is a life saver. My grandson hasn’t been diagnosed yet.My grandson runs his legs can’t move fast enough. He would run right out onto the road. He doesn’t stop for anything you can call him and he doesn’t stop. I bought him the kind that’s like a bracelet he won’t wear it.Hopefully I will fined something that will work.

Love your videos! Years ago while on a cruise there was a mother there who had her toddler on a toddler leash, she entered the elevator and my brother-in-law was so offended by the toddler leash that he refused to even ride the same elevator as this woman and her child. It was beyond embarrassing, my heart broke for that woman, I still think of her today. He waited for the next one all because of this leash. Ironically he’d go on to have a child on the spectrum who also sprints away anywhere and everywhere they go. I haven’t brought it up to him but always wonder if he regrets the choice of judging and embarrassing that woman on the cruise years ago.

It’s good that Simon knows to put his arms up when he wants to be picked up. If he were level two (like I was growing up) then this development might have occurred later (e.g. after his fourth birthday (like it did with me and with some other kids I have seen who are level two)).
I used leashes for my non autistic kids, in parades, crowded fairs, even busy department stores. Until they learned to stay close in crowds, it was the leash. It was fine.

Simon’s toddler leash could be useful for him if you go to a crowded city like Boston, Massachusetts or New York City (or probably any crowded city with a lot of traffic).
If you go with him to any city you will probably want to pack it in your luggage just in case.

Seeing Simon on the swing reminds me that when I was around Simon’s current age my parents showed me how to use my legs so I could swing without having to be pushed.

I think the leash is great for any child with a disability that affects their ability walk with their family safely. Different disabilities mean different struggles but, if that leash is need to ensure a child's safety, then that leash is just as important as the air we breath in for that child. I'd much rather see a child with a leash then see a child getting lost/kidnapped because they eloped or getting run over by a car because they don't have a good danger awareness feeling (don't know how to say since I also don't have it so, I'm trying to describe something that neurotypicals are supposed to feel whilst being autistic and not feeling it myself)

Wow! I need this for my 4 year old boy. Currently we limit going out but thankfully we have a big yard area we made outside to go outside everyday. Anyway when we do go on outings we use a stroller that he is obviously too big for and I recently experienced rude stairs and comments from a couple of kids .. age’s probably around 6,8,& 10. “ look at the kid , he’s a baby! He’s to big!” Etc…. I didn’t see a grown up around, I just walked away but it was hard for me to experience. My son needs to be in a stroller when we’re out, but now I will try a leash , he wears weighted vest , and leash will allow him to walk more 😊

I am an occupational therapist in Turkey. I see toddler leash on social media and families use it. It is a safe method, especially for children who have difficulty holding hands. unfortunately it is not used in my country. It is likened to a dog collar. What are the reactions from outside to you? Is it widely used?
Great question. Toddler leashes are not usually used, but when someone uses them, it is not usually looked down on. Most of the time people understand that the child has a special need and the parent just wants to help them be safe. We have received more compliments than negative reactions form people, as we used it in the US.
Leash on a child seems a bit binding but then it's for his own safety.

absolutely pro child leash, there was a 9 year old that fell to her death hiking in our state park had she been on a leash its possible she still be alive. in the end how is a child harness any different then a life jacket, a life jacket is essentially a harness. society should normalize child harnesses in the same way.

I have never known a child older than maybe coming up to age 4 west a harness or leash. I don't know if they even make them th a size. If they do, I very much doubt a 9 year old would wear one. They would keep removing it and acting up.

@@angr3819 I have used harnesses with 9-year-olds with no problem, at times the child might be upset about being on a harness or a wrist strap, but explaining the reason why and allowing their participation to up to them helps a lot.
We just got a paw patrol backpack with a leash for safety. My son is level 1 autism, but seems to be struggling with the concept of not running off and we have had a couple of scary moments with him and cars. I'm just struggling to actually use it if we go to a store, cause we're in Alabama and most people disapprove.
Thankfully he rode just fine in the buggy today, but most of the time he wants me to carry him or walk.

It looks like Simon might be just starting to learn the meaning of words like “yours” and “mine” here.
I think I started learning about that at age five-and-a-half in preschool. Given that I was level two back then and Simon is level one that’s probably just about par for the course but I have yet to see any specific figures on this.
By the way, on the subject of working on coordination and patience you might try taking Simon to a miniature golf course in your area at some point if your area has any. If his coordination is like mine he won’t become a professional golfer but he might enjoy it anyway (at least in the next couple of years) as long as things don’t get too competitive.

I Germany I never see a toddler or Kid with a leash. There are stroller for toddler.
The german word for leash is Leine. (Translation for leash in german)
The leash gives Ezra freedom and give you safety as parents. The leash is good for toddler and kids with disabilities but not for healthy toddler and kids. This is my opinion.

I still struggle with spacing it's affected my parking if it's even slightly tight I will pass it up. I think that's why many autistic kids that can be an issue is they don't realize that they have gone from the sidewalk into the street which seems further away.

I need the extra space so if I park too close to the line I won't affect others and because I have had issues finding my car in a large parking lot so I would park in the very back which doesn't seem right because I have a disability it's literally a joke that everything is around the corner when I park because finding my car is more important than being close until now

7 Ahead - What was your high school experience like was there any severe mental health struggles if so please give me honest advice when dealing with toxic friends & social environments ?
Yeah, people can be so mean in high school, sorry you have been struggling with that. I would reach out to a teacher or councilor who you feel can help. It is important to build a team of people that can support and help you through the struggles. Try and be the one to help others as well and that always helps. ❤️❤️❤️

If Simon continues to say his “rs” like this he might need to eventually work on it with his speech therapist. You might want to ask his speech therapist about this.
I never worked on this with a speech therapist when I was growing up and I still say my “rs” wrong in my late 40s. Because of this some people (even some of my doctors) think that my IQ is around 70 or 80 instead of the actual number that is more like 120 or even 125.

Yes for Eza because he has a disability but other then health/medical conditions I don't think one should be used all the time yet occasionally on a child under 7 I can agree on. I'm by no means a parent but just stating my opinion on the topic.

In fact, I think that is a great goal. A happy, healthy and loved child with autism or other condition will have a better chance than a child without any such problem, but who isn't kept healthy, happy and loved.

The youngest has Autism too and he has been in speech therapy for over a year now. He is doing very well. We are really excited about all he can say and will continue to help him learn and progress in his speech.
Unfortunately, medical authorities in the UK stopped clipping the skin under the tongue if it was too long. Before they stopped, my eldest had the op after a long time of speech therapy which hadn't helped. Within a week of the op he was clearly saying words he would never have attempted before. He was aged, not autistic but was over/hyperactive and had difficulty concentrating. I believe due to difficulties and medical neglect during his birth, which led to him needing oxygen.
I am not saying that the skin under the tongue being too long is a problem for Ezra and Simon. I wouldn't have a clue as I don't know them, but it will be a problem for a lot of children whether or not they have other difficulties. I don't know why the NHS in the UK stopped the op. Probably due to cost cutting.

we plan on it. There is actually an event that is happening soon where professionals are going to cut their hair and we'll get video of it. I'm sure it will be a big improvement
