Steve defends Boston??? What universe is this?
1 in which Maple Leaf fans try & stay relevant during their off season, filling up time for content. Right , You mentioned it now talk about something else for pities sake!!!
Hatred for the state of NHL officiating transcends teams allegiance.
That's just how bad the league(owners)have become. It's unenjoyable to watch a "fixed" hockey game. They're making hand over fist off of gambling.
@@johnharrison7449 don’t get me wrong. I’m glad when rival fans can put bias aside and recognize when things aren’t right. It’s still shocking tho considering how much misery the Bruins have put Steve in even tho the leafs do it to themselves most of the time
@@paulbaglio6295 amen. I don’t understand why we haven’t fixed this yet
As much as I hate the Bruins.....That was ridiculous.
Read Rule 69.7 rebounds and loose pucks
Hockey is a great sport and ruined by the officiating all season.... if the NHL was a team, they would mass fire and get competent people in places....
you do realize it doesn't matter anyways?
Florida would have still won the game. And they're probably going to win this series as well. Boston sucks.
@koshka02 you can't say "you do realize" when talking about a tying or single go ahead goal. You are acting like FL was winning 6-0 which by the way has literally no bearing on if penalties/goal retractions should be called or not.
@@slasher1087I mean let’s be real . Boston doesn’t belong in this series lol
This round of NHL playoffs looks WAY more like the WWE than real sport.
I can't watch it. I wish Dangle had been right about that 3 on 3 league. Or I might start watching European hockey.
You are right
How about the game before. Two hands on the Bruins player, steers him into goalie and they called the Bruins for goalie interference. Just as egregious.
Consistency is all we can ask for.
From a Bruins fan; THANK YOU for posting this. The amount of braindead takes of people who don't know how to even read a rulebook concerning this was absolutely insane. The NHL can't or refuses to follow it's own rulebook. It's as simple as that.
There's been plenty of times where a call could be goalie interference but they let it go since the goalie wasn't going to make the save anyway
@@justjohnny420 I'd love to hear an example.
Great saves only happen when everyone else thinks the goalie can't make the save. That's why they're great.
Maybe, but Coyle also clearly embellished. So do you reward Coyle for embellishing? I think that's the issue the officials had here. What part of that sequence actually caused the interference? Bennetts push, or Coyle's embellishment? Was there anything in the review that was irrefutable to overrun the call on the ice? If anything the video review makes Coyle look more guilty than he probably really is.
@@dcl97 Wasn't the refs on the ice's call it was the Toronto review room and they already told us their reasoning for calling it no goal and it had nothing to do with embellishment.
The NHL's reasoning makes no sense, as they literally discuss in the video we're commenting on...
@cmac3530 speaking of yourself obviously brain dead takes who can't read a rulebook rule 69.7 read it and still say it wasn't a good goal you're either a lying homer or have a first grade reading comprehension level
Tampa got the bad end of two goaltender interference calls against the Panthers this playoffs. Both of them were wayyy less egregious than this one, but the Panthers still got the favorable result. Not even surprised at this point.
It is supposed to also say that the above rule doesn't apply if Florida commits the infraction, per Bettman's "southern strategy" of ensuring that non-traditional (where fans will not support a losing team) markets must have their teams win the Stanley Cup. Really, and this involves me supporting Brad Marchand here, Bennett should have been suspended for punching Brad in the head in game three causing a concussion leading to the captain missing game four and likely the rest of the series (which will only be game five it appears).
I will say that I have noticed a consistent pattern in terms of goaltender interference. The league always rules against the player who makes the contact with the goaltender, not the person who creates the contact. So, hypothetically if Bennett grabbed a Bruin and threw him at Swayman that would be fine, but if someone on Boston threw Bennett on Swayman that would be goaltender interference. Unless the rule amendment whereby whatever Florida does is legal applies.
You' d have to ask Bettman for an explanation. You could ask his fart catcher, George CTE Parros about the non-suspension, but essentially he does what Bettman tells him to do so it you could cut out the middleman and ask the league President.
As Steve said at some point in the podcast "do you know how wrong you have to be for me to feel bad for Brad Marchand????" This is such a bad series of calls that people who hate the Bruins have to agree it was wrong. How do fans let the league get away with that? It's our money they need to keep existing. Stop giving it to them if they won't fix this.
Never thought I'd see the day where Steve Dangle defends the Bruins! Love to see it.
You gotta show the dive that led to the Power Play for the Panthers
What dive?
@@Tyekiller115 The penalty that was called on Lindholm before this. He pushed the FL player (I forget wich) in the arm as he skated into the zone (perfectly normal play to slow his entry), the FL player jerked his own hand up into his own face then fell backwards. Lindoholm was called for interference. In real time it did look like a penalty. On the replay you can see it was clearly a dive.
Funny seeing Steve defend Boston... And I think SDPN needs to talk to Tom Grossi to start an NHL version of his "Fan Reactions" videos: need to see an NHL version of his Ref character after Steve's ref impersonation!
Honestly that would be an amazing idea as I have been subscribed to Tom Grossi for almost 2 years now
It's not so much Dangle defending Boston, it's a fan of hockey recognizing bad officiating. The Leafs are his bread and butter, but he will call out his team or the NHL when they need to be called out. I'm a diehard Bruins fan, but I enjoy watching him and respect him.
@AcidFlash123 I'm also a Bruins fan and I agree with you
@@justinspiewak1482Shouldn't you be watching your team get spanked by the Panthers instead of watching leafs podcast. Marchand got what he deserved and the goal was good. Stop crying.
@@Puckhog Well that didn't age well.
I love the unbiased coverage by SD. Even though I loathe the Lostin Losins, Dangle is so right on this.
I respect Steve for this so much his unbiased opinion is always refreshing. Stuff Iike this is why no one will care about his mlh mistake.
I am in complete agreement here. No goal. The Bruins were shafted.
Its called rigging games
And then in game 5 the refs blow the play dead at one point when the Bruins were on the attack because... they were checking to make sure Bobrovsky was okay after taking a shot (he was literally fine. There was nothing to indicate that something was wrong with him). And they only blew the play dead as soon as the Bruins had possession.
Everyone should go back and watch the three Goalie Interference reviews in FLA-TB Game 5 Round 1 this year that ALL went Florida's way, absolutely fishy at this point, has to be either gambling, unconscious bias, or some sort of pro-Miami initiative bias.
Game management and league directives on full display here. NHL is as real as the WWE is.
Still mea riding the idiots
Annnnnd we've gone off the deep end. Your team must have been eliminated
Hate Boston, we’re used to it, but no matter who it happened to it’s wrong. Thanks for being impartial Steve. The league however is not.
Really respect the unbiased take here. This is why I like Steve and co, at heart we all just love the game and want to see it officiated correctly regardless of the team.
Rule 67.9: in a rebound situation, or where a goalkeeper and attacking player(s) are simultaneously attempting to play a loose puck, whether inside or outside the crease, incidental contact with the goalkeeper will be permitted, and any goal that is scored as a result thereof will be allowed
You know we are in bizzaro world when Steve is defending the Bruins that way!!!
On a side note, a friend of mine who was an OHL ref told me that the NHL stopped training referee's to be in the NHL and started recruiting ex-players as referee's. THAT is the problem.
Bitter ex-players that didn't make it--like McCauley.
I've heard this from several other people. Both a lack of training and the potential jealousy and resentment towards the people who made it when they didn't. Pretty terrible combination.
that makes sense though cause you already got in that someone who can skate well is well aware of what players do and say and is tough enough to get physical. you cut alot of training needs out simply cause its already there. decent option for former players who dont wanna do something more businessy yet,.
Training and evaluation is key everywhere.... they get paid well etc... that whole silo top down is not held accountable. Old school refs are the worst at every level...
Listen to DNVR podcast episode with Dave Jackson. He talks a lot about refs, officiating and how they are trained and recruited.
Bennet shouldn’t even have been playing
i agree with this logical take, shouldnt be able to push someone into the tendy
Stopped taking the nhl seriously 10 years ago. Corrupted league
Great rant, Steve!
This happens quite literally every year. Every year we have a discussion about how, "no, for real, THIS has been the worst officiated post-season." Nothing is changing any time soon.
That same game, just off the top of my head, Hyman was high sticked in front of the net, no call. Ekholm had his stick slashed out of his hands so hard it ends up in the 10th row, no call. Too many men on the ice right before Van scored, no call.
Selective memory much? Oilers were angels and didn't do anything they got away with 🤣
@@justjohnny420 Not saying that at all johnny. I'll type slower for you next time
The Quinn Hughes injury broke me. Ref literally told him to get off the ice and stop bleeding so much. The situation's reached MLB umpire levels of poor officiating. Part of me wonders if the NHL secretly hands out penalty quotas that refs are not allowed to exceed, so as to control and influence the viewing spectacle/product as a priority over the competitive integrity of the game. They're a big fan of the "controversy creates cash" philosophy
It's also possible that the NHL is experimenting in the same way that MLB has for decades, in trying to manipulate the speed and duration of games as a factor in the viewer/consumer experience. Penalty reduction is a way to control the flow and duration of a game by reducing the number of stoppages in a way that is more "subjective" than something like waving off an icing call or a puck over the glass/in the netting. With every playoff game facing the potential of 1 or more 20 minute overtimes instead of 5 minutes and a shootout, I'd think the implications there must play a factor in some way
I remember I heard somewhere that when coach's challenges first became a thing, the league was worried about how much time on-air would be wasted by having fans basically sitting and twiddling their thumbs for an indeterminate amount of time waiting for a review to complete, which is why they add the penalty if a challenge is overturned. I gotta think as well that controlling penalties by limiting them per game has a similar intended goal in mind
I've heard some people say that because there was a rebound it's not interference. But this is a misreading of the rules for a couple reasons:
1 The rebound happens before the interference
2 The rebound rule is meant to allow attackers opportunity equal rights to a loose puck in the crease
3 The rule is NOT meant to give a free pass for interference for any rebound or any defender already in the crease
Say what you want about Panthers outplaying Boston, etc. No argument. That was a horrible non-call. I have seen opposing players get pushed into a goalie, and the player that was pushed went to the box (equally as bad). In this case, however, Bennett not only pushed the player into the goalie, he CROSS-CHECKED him into the goalie. There were two penalties that should have nullified the goal. Then the ruling was apparently the goalie had adequate time to recover?
Unfortunately this kind of thing happens all the time in the NHL and doesn’t get called .
I’m an oiler fan and the Hughes one was 4 minutes.
But the refs made up for it missing everything the next game……
Missed a goal, missed the goalie grabbing the attackers stick….
Blind as bats the series!
Steve I LOVE the shortened options for your content. I think the NHL has told referees to let the canucks and oilers bash each other up to soften them for the next round US team (Colorado after 7) what are your thoughts
Re McDavid high stick missed call on Hughes:
There was a missed high stick in the Jets Avs series that was reviewed after the whistle, and was called a double minor against Vilardi on the Jets. I believe it was game 3 in the 3rd period.
So basically they just pick and choose when they want to review stuff.
It’s sad because it’s a black and white rule. It doesn’t say anything about how hard you must be pushed for the goal to stand.
As an official, I can say that there are only a few rules that are "black and white." If you want a game called with the literal text of every rule, then just about every single time a puck is dumped into an offensive zone it would be icing since they are technically behind the red line, 9 out of 10 plays would be interference, we would have about 12 or 13 game misconduct calls per game....
@@TheresAlwaysZoidbergMaybe if the refs called it every time, the players would stop committing those infractions.
@@jamesj6597 right on brother! Good refs call the game and everyone knows how to play. Then you have different refs with different rules, old school refs suck at every level. Call the game damn it.....
@@TheresAlwaysZoidberg Sounds like the refs have created a culture of mediocracy and incompetency then.
Saw cats fans complaining about the no interference goal last night. Fandom is a hell of a drug.
I couldn’t agree more!!!! This call was absolutely ridiculous!!!!
I completely understand the line of reason that the Bruins played like garbage in that game. They got outshot 48-19. If that goal was called back, its certainly possible - dare I say likely - that the Panthers wouldve won anyway.
With that said, this goal being allowed is extremely egregious. And if that goal gets called back, who knows what happens from there.
This is why I love Steve Dangle
The NHL is rigging games in favour of Florida and it has been like that for two years now.
the same thing is happening in the nfl and the nba... with the current batch of players, you have two choices... call all the penalties and ruin the game, or call some of the penalties and risk you guys watching video replays of missed calls... the option of the players respecting each other and the sport that makes them fabulously wealthy is never discussed.
Spectators only have one choice... to vote with their dollars. The fact that the nfl, nba, and nhl has never been more popular is a good indication of how spectators have chosen to vote up until now.
Remember the "crosscheck" called in double OT that gave the Rangers the game. Or the flying elbow from Jacob Trouba that should've been a suspension. Or when Brady Skjei braced himself for a hit and was called for roughing, after Svechnikov got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for being tripped by a Rangers player resulting in 4 on 4
This was a goal because there was no goaltender interference.
What you're looking at is Coyle performing the Boston flop seconds after Bennet made contact, in an attempt to draw a penalty.
This was the correct call.
bad refs
You know the reffing is bad when Dangle defends the Bruins and Canucks XD
Any chance you guys can do a video on the goalie interference topic with references to past and recent calls, etc? Sorry if you've already done one and I missed it.
Ask the Canucks how bad it's been - or to a lesser extent, Oilers fans? I'm not going to pretend as a Canucks fan (but a hockey fan first) that the officiating hasn't be awful all around. If you want an interesting historical perspective on that, check out former Vancouver sports columnist Tony Gallagher's interview last night on CZcams with Sekeres and Price. He outlines what's been going on and where the mistrust in officiating comes from, and it's longstanding. Gallagher was considered "controversial" in his day because he came from the old school of journalism, where you held the powerful to account. You didn't kiss up to them. You didn't do a report FOR a major corporation or news or sports channel, you did it as an independent contractor seeking the truth, whatever that truth was and whatever side it supported. The facts mattered more than who it favoured.
Officiating has been terrible all year. Its undermining the credibility of the sport.
The officials would have been knocked out in a 1st round sweep worse than the Caps if they were judged on playoff readiness. It's like they chose the worst in the league and said "hey have you ever watched playoff hockey? We're looking for people who are basically new to the game". The inconsistency. The timing of the horrendous calls. The lack of proper calls even on regulations. It's been an absolute embarrassment. Blame the commissioner. His rules have made the game very difficult to understand when it comes to what is a penalty, what is legal physical contact, and whether it's even legal to hit anyone anymore. It's led to so called fans of the game calling for people to be suspended without touching someone else. Crying about every time someone falls down. Every loud boom or guy spilled on the ice must be a major .....it's just not the same game.
Guys skate around with their heads down staring at pucks for ten seconds and act like when they get crushed there should be an intent to injure. Guys no longer even expect to be hit so when they get hit they are more likely to get hurt and certainly more likely to cry about a penalty call.
Agree with the review. Posing a question, does the rule book give anything that says where the push by the attacking player needs to occur? Because with what you read, if an attacking player pushes a defending player within the faceoff circle, that defending player makes no attempt to stop and "accidentally" bumps his own goalie, does the rule book give the referee the discretion to say it wasn't a penalty?
interestingly the rule says that if an attacking player is pushed into the goalie by a defending player then it's not considered contact initiated by the attacker, "provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact". But that same statement isn't there about a defending player being pushed into the goalie by an attacking player. Still, I wonder if there might be some discretion about whether or not a push truly "caused" a defender to come into contact with the goalie, especially in the situation you describe.
@@catlover666666 You see why I'm questioning that? I just think that if the referees do not have the ability to say it is or isn't part of that rule, then any defending player can "accidentally" bump their goalie causing the other team to receive a penalty for a minor bump that occurred away from the net.
@@catlover666666 There is a clause in the rule that says if an attacking player pushes the defending player, contact on the goalie by the defending player will be treated as if it was the attacking player. So for the purposes of goalie interference, it would be treated as if Bennett skated into Swayman.
Ending a game with the conclusion that bos had 4 pk's too many and fla had 2 pk's too few. That's 12 minutes of the wrong power-balance in a 60 minute game.
Fla got all the help that they desperately needed to get ahead in this serie.
If they’re gonna suspend Soucy for a cross check to the face (which is fair) DoPS also needed to hand out a suspension to Hyman for his check on Zodorov which left him needing stitches 🤷
Stay away from the NFL if you think this is that bad lmao
I feel there have been a lot of dives throughout the playoffs. Some of the officials are overcompensating
Tkachuk got his helmet 'pushed' off and the bruin gets a penalty for it. But what was Tkachuks left hand doing? Unbuckling his strap and helping the helmet come off, ref didn't see that.
Then (game 4) with 10:37 on the clock in the third periode, Tkachuk ends up hunched over the b's goal and feels contact to his helmet. There goes his left hand again, unbuckling his chin-strap and pushing off his own helmet (this time in full view of the camera); he looks around to complain about it and sees it was a ref that touched his helmet and quickly turtles ....
It seems to me, everybody missed this.
As a Bolts fan I watched the Cats, literally mug our players with trips, interference, and cheap shots in general, with no consistent ramifications by officials. And then they wonser why fans think games are rigged??.. Sports has been at a point where refs and umps think that they are part of the game, rather than just calling a fair game for many years now.. But evey year it seems to be getting worse and worse.
As much as I hate the Bruins, that was a BS call.
The Bennet punch to Marchand brought a great response by the league. Nothing happened, but we are watching for retaliation. Retaliation for what? I thought nothing happened? Complete nonsense.
Truly believe the Campbell angle is true. It was proven with a paper trail in the past, and clearly the league covered for it once already.
The allowed goal and last week's draft lottery really has me concerned for this league.
Your tears taste salty. Dont worry SDPNs fixes would be worse
What's so concerning about the sharks winning a lottery 😂
The team with the worst record got the first pick, that seems fine.
@@Womper1992 same order 2 years in a row tho?
Theres honestly a laundry list of calls you could of put along side the goalie interference in the bruins, panthers series.
That was a goal because the puck crossed the red line. Rule 1.05 of the NHL rulebook.
And if you are wondering the answer is B the easier one !🤔🤔🙄🤓 Did anyone else notice that Referee doesn't Wear Glasses ?
Spot on!!!!
The officiating in every series has been pathetic
Called back if it is the Leafs. Just sayin. The Host says by rule 69, if someone is pushed into the tender, No goal.... The Defense should do that every time then... Just push someone into the tender, no goal.
It's not a goaltender interference penalty, it SHOULD have been an interference penalty on Bennett though. The goal stood because even though he was pushed into the goalie, the goalie would not have saved it anyway. They can challenge for goalie interference but NOT regular interference.
No one calls McJesus. He's too valuable to the League.
leafs fans and bruins fans coming together over the tyranny. Truly a sight to see.
they let someone hold and shove Lauko into the net the night before and call it interference.
I never thought I'd see the day where Steve takes bostons side
Worst part is watch the penalty to the Bruins right before this sequence! Panthers players are literally diving everywhere and trying to sell calls!!
Love hockey were the boys just play!! Refs are fair then it’s fine
Steven best discribes the refs when missing calls because they need to take a 5 minute break inbetween penalties lol
The reality is GI challenges overturned in the playoffs are 1 out of 7. There were three others that weren’t a challenge and none were over turned. There call on the ice almost always stand because if the call was that obvious the ref would have called it is the mindset. In this play the decision was did the push prevent Swayman from playing the puck? An argument could be made that the bruin player wasn’t pushed hard enough to cause the contact that happened. All GI are disputed over yes or no. It’s a judgement call and to overturn it would need indisputable evidence.
Every sport, but especially NFL and NHL have been severely affected by Live In Game Betting. Real time betting has changed the outcome of games. The odds that obvious and simple plays are jacked by officials, can only be attributed to betting. Watch out Shoeless Joe, Live In Game Betting has changed the game.
Bruins not doing the same thing in the 3rd out of principle= No balls.
Disagree on the Bennet goal. I played goal for 20 years of my life and to me thats a good goal. Goalie wasn't gonna stop it anyway.
If anything, Bennet shouldve gotten a cross checking or interference penalty. But he did not, so good goal
Coyle's job was to tie up Bennett, instead his back was turned to Bennett and all it took was a little push. Play lackadaisical hockey ,you loose.
Even as a florida panthers fan I agree that it wasn't the right call, but Florida has been amazing
Making up the rules as they go. Stick to the rules. Almost every playoff series they have bent the rules to suit their own needs
As a B’s fan I think Coyle went down way too easy. That’s why we got the makeup call tonights game.
the diving in tonights Bruins-Panthers game is unbearable. Time to make it a 5 minute penalty, and reviewable.
Funny when Canucks fans complained about the officiating in the Finals (b)ruins fans called the Canucks fans whiners and all other kinds of names
How is that funny isn't that the way it goes. Hopefully bruins fans don't start a riot though
Game "management".
The pathetic justifications are BS, if Bennett hadn't interfered with the defenceman he probably wouldn't have gotten a stick on that puck. Whether or not the goalie had a chance to make the save is irrelevant
I built a pool for Chris Rooney. He’s a good dude. I feel that he goes out of his way to call penalties against Boston to show he is unbiased.
Steve nailed it with the (stupid) context of that non-call on the high-stick. Some of the worst officiating I've seen. In those 5 minutes Nurse should have gotten a penalty for taking a helmet off (not called). Next play Canucks do the annoying delay of game over the board puck thing, and also take someone's helmet off so technically by the rule book that should be 2 penalties against the Canucks, (also Canucks players seem aware of this cause they are trying their best to draw the oilers into postscrum fights) but instead they give Draisatl a scrum penalty for... some reason... (wasn't even the main guy involve?) and throw two canucks in the box. So now the oilers have a single powerplay but without Drai, then Hyman holds a stick for an obvious penalty (which was like... the only correct call in these 5 minutes). Then McDavid does the drive-by high stick and they "can't call it" now cause they'd be putting the oilers entire first line in the box... It was incredibly bad. I turned the TV off at that point because I was just unable to watch how bad the officiating was (And I say this as an Oilers fan).
It's all been set!
The NHL people always criticizing soccer for dives is pure jealousy. For that matter Football and Rugby also do a way better job. The NHL is a clown show of inconsistencies.
It must be fixed
How about the McDavid high stick on Hughes
Coyle dove after the tap, that said, the punch on Marchand should have been punished.
This play, and the extreme low quality of league operations this playoffs has led me to stop watching. I am listening to podcasts while driving and not watching NHL gambling ads in my free time, because the league is a waste of time when it's this low quality.
The goal was allowed bc the refs didn’t call a penalty to begin with, if they call a penalty it’s no goal
NHL learning from the NFL how to influence games.
This is CZcams gold.
Steve is going to have an aneurysm.
Not a fan of either team and not a fan of endless penalties that ruin the game, but I was watching this game and would have bet the house that that goal would be disallowed...but nooo. I was shocked!
The more they kept showing the replay the more it looked like Swayman wasn't making that save anyway
Doesn't matter, you don't ref the hypothetical, you ref the rules @justjohnny420
