- Brian Deegan and Travis Pastrana pushed the sport of Freestyle Motocross to it's peak in the mid 2000's. Travis admits that he was ignorant to the fact that Brian Deegan had a master plan that ended up playing out faultlessly.

It’s sad man kids today will never know the thrill of old school x games. Seeing Mira do the double back flip in bmx park, seeing Colin flip his Subaru and fucking send it and finish the race and BARELY losing because he was a badass. Seeing tony hawk try the 900 after the comp was over and everyone tapping trucks on the piping to get him fired up. Then the pinnacle of the x games, seeing pastrana hit the double back flip perfectly. I had legit tears in my eyes when I saw it live.
Amen brother!
Don’t forget about all the snowboarding battles with Shaun white
And don't forget the most badass overall athlete of all time, Shaun Palmer
Agree 💯
why is this sad? people do wayyy cooler shit now.
Pastrana was the riding prodigy, Deegan was the marketing genius.
Deegan is the best
Reminds me of Dale Earnhardt & Jeff Gordon. Literally the same exact thing
9
Pastrana is better at anything involving two wheels.
@@limjahey4351 nah you been drinking to much Jim 😂
Ricky Carmichael was charging 15 for autographs when no one else was at hangtown. Pastrana broke his wrist and still signed a flag I had in the rain
Interviewer: Travis and deegan were the main guys
Mike metzger: am I a joke to you?
Blake music carter 387!
interviewer: no .. you're THE GODFATHER
Blake music carter : getting bored of that CZcams line.
But none the less.
💯 CORRECT!
Metz her was just before their time
Blake music carter the godfather!
That double backflip in the X Games was the gnarliest, most perfectly executed on the biggest stage trick I've ever seen. Tony Hawk had multiple tries at the 900....Travis is a fucking legend and an amazing rider.
Thats a really good point. It was special for sure.
@Kyle Ignaitis Tony Hawks admits to trying the trick for several years before finally making it at X Games. It took him countless tries before he made it. His trick was still extremely gnarly, but he didn't just show up and try it out of nowhere at X Games like you suggest. Multiple skaters were trying to be the first to make it over multiple years.
@Kyle Ignaitis you can't bail out of tricks on a dirtbike like you can on a skateboard. On a skateboard If you mess up a big trick and bail out of it you can focus on landing as safely as you're able to. If you bail out of a big trick on a dirt bike you NEED to make sure you're not gonna get end up under the bike when you hit the ground and also try to land as safely as you're able to. And a skateboard coming down on top of you isn't likely to kill you. A dirtbike definitely has that potential to kill you. Fmx is another world of danger when shit goes wrong.
@@RC_Rooster sliding down a pipe with gear on isn't hard at all. Vert in general isn't that dangerous
Funky Rooster it would depend on the application of the trick then, wouldn’t it? Your points are bikes are heavier and the positioning of your fall is important; but that’s not less important than someone on a pipe or especially a megas landing approach. Yes, bikes are heavier but they are also underneath you and pushing away isn’t all that complicated of a maneuver mid air. Arguably, what I understand is that we actually have more control of our trajectory and speed. skate is like locking yourself into a rocket that’s going to head straight and you have to adjust at the boards control at that point(meaning you don’t decide much after you take off, your just maintaining rather than controlling). On a bike we can pick our speed, steer, and decide all the way off the ramp what it is we are going to do next.
Also, we are most likely landing in dirt instead of an unforgiving wood structure, with a significant more amount of padding. If you are approaching a jump, you already pretty much know the variables and what you would do on a bail. I think you are trying to hard to stick up for moto. Both sports have a potential to be dangerous, it’s the application of how you perform your art, rather than the art itself that’s so dangerous.
That's why I love travis, it clearly wasn't about the money or fame to him. When he landed his double backflip the first person he hugged was his mom. Didn't care about his image, he was just being travis.
Didnt he do it and was apologizing to his mom for putting her through all the stress
Pastrana rules. He took my friend's little nephew Connor from Colorado who had cancer out to his place in Maryland and rode with him. How many pros/celebrities do that stuff? Not a publicity stunt, just a damn good guy.
I've heard of a lot of celebrities that spend time with disabled/grief stricken children.
“Cowboy Kenny Bartram” really brought me back. Haven’t heard that name in YEARS
How about Tom Cat Clowers?? First I ever heard of Travis was the Crusty Demons of Dirt video. All those guys launched fmx. Fresno Smooth was another epic film.
Lets Not Forget "THE FLYIIIN HAWAIIIN"

Watched him win 125 in person i remember heel clickers
I thought it was even cooler that when I asked him about that, he paid respect to Jim Rippy
Dude the backflip retired a bunch of legends
I think Twitch deserves a bit more spot light then deegan tbh
Grew up loving Tommy “the cat” Clowers. The backflip hit and he just disappeared like nah dude I’m good
@@left_rios absolutely 💯
Yup
Carey Hart was the first to try on the main stage but never really got it dialed. two years later EVERYONE at X-Games is flipping their bike
Travis innovated the talent. Deegan innovated the media.
Perfectly said dude.
The dynamic duo
He’s doing it with his daughter rn
She’s got the goods and she’s a winner, just like ol daddio
@@christophersmith8486 hes doing it with all 3 kids homie. Dangerboy could have arguably won the 85 monster energy cup, but he wasn't even old enough to race it. He's setting them all up for their entire lives 💯
Well said
Deegan having his name tattooed on himself says it all!
Travis is seriously one of the nicest guys Ive ever met in the pits. I told him "it was nice to meet you Travis, Travis says its nice to meet you man".
I love Deegan but Travis is on a different level
True
Pastrana and Deegan did it man. They did
Glad he brought up the memories of Nate Adams and The Flying Hawaiian.
Damn I forgot above Clifford adaptonte lol..that lbz gear
Where is Cliff now?? Was just wondering about him while working the other day
Mike metzger.mad mike.cowboy kenny..good ol days man
I seen Clif in Riverside , CA like 8 years ago last. I remember him on that 500 in crusty
eddiemoto250 he did a podcast with steve Mathis a lil while back. If you wanna look it up.
You can find it by searching”the steve mathis show “ on iTunes.
I miss the those times when I drove home as quick as possible to see the newest and gnarliest shit on xgames.
Yeah doesn’t happen the same these days huh
I'd just like to say Travis was the Bad Ass kid that jumped his bike into the SF Bay 20yrs ago. That's when I became a fan 4 life. Oh, and after he beat Deegan.
Plus he was riding a 125cc while everyone else was on a 250cc bikes
Bike into the Bay... I remember the shit he got for that... buncha hippies. He played Deegans game and won.
Ya the thought of thay gives me the chills I remember it like it was yesterday. Literally made me want nothing more than a dirtbike in my life.
Mad respect for both of those guys. They both made the sport better!
so cool hearing from these guys lately that we all watched as kids on tv. thank you! Also yes seeing Deegan be a professional now with is vlogging and everything is definitely crazy to see the transition from mulisha to now.
That’s because the MM days was an act
Don’t forget Crusty Demons of Dirt crew
Seth Enslow... thats all I remember
Travis got going in freestyle with those guys
Totally forgot about them, I think I had a PlayStation game of them to
DAMN SON havent heard of crusty movies in so long, thanks for the flashback!

The flying Hawaiin did that no handed air walk thing blew my mind as a kid
I still remember watching Travis land the world's first double backflip live like it was yesterday.
These interviews are top shelf some great insights!
Thanks legend!
The flying Hawaiian Clifford adaptante. That name brings me back to xgames in philly.
My favorite days of FMX was the Crusty days, before FMX really got big. I LOVE Crusty 3 & 4 those were the diamonds out of the entire series, 1 & 2 were also awesome, but 3 & 4 is when the perfect balance of everything came together.
Bubba & Kenny Yoho 🏁
Those 2 both needed each other to make it big. Great interview
It was cool growing up watching all of this progress. From Winners Take All to Crusty Demons of Dirt - very cool progression.
It’s cool hearing them talk about Haiden back when he was on 85’s and now he’s a pro super cross rider already getting podiums in his rookie season
This brought back some memories, remember the arguments in middle school after any xgames events.
Similar experience in the ski world.
Glenn Plake is a famous skier with a huge colored mohawk. As his friends describe him, "Glenn was just like us, tennis shirt, then bam, mohawk!"
Glenn has the skills to back it up, but his image was a marketing brainstorm. In my several conversations, he always came across as upbeat and fun guy. Just doing it his way.
Reminds me of how Deegan is being described.
Kevin Moore lol Glenn Plake... went parasailing with that guy in like 1991... he’s crazy..
People just couldn't handle anything "outside" the norm back then. DEEGAN built an Enterprise and is passing that knowledge on to his children.
Mountain biking. Shawn Palmer vs John Tomac or Brian Lopes
I see the Deegans all the time. I do not give the parents the time of day. They will burn you in a heartbeat. It is all about the money with them. Glenn Plake I haven't seen in 30 years but have great respect for him. Spent a few days chasing him at Squaw.
Scot Soaring Bit salty are we? Keeping all that inside yourself is the worst thing. Let it go, go live your life be happy
I haven’t heard about the flyin Hawaiian in SOOOO long. They really don’t do things like they used to. Back when freestyle was balls to the wall
I definitely bought it!! Hahaha glad you both shined bright!
There’s no such thing as selling out when you’re grinding to find a foothold in life. These guys put in the hard work to get where they are.
Nah, you can definitely sell out.
Major difference between an artist and a sellout.
My respect for everything Travis has done just jumped by leaps and bounds! What a truly nice, polite, and we'll spoken young man!
Bringin back great memories! Thanks for all those amazing years Travis! Can't remember if it was a Terrafirma video or Crusty video, but I remember seeing u for the 1st time riding with Carmichael & Stewart when u were like 13 blowing my mind! I love Deegan too & totally bought into the whole "Militia" thing & loved it! He was def smart branding himself like he did.
Terrafirma 2. I have it on vhs.
Great episode !!
Never forget the double backflip as kid. That one summer. It was all over the news everywhere. Freaking awesome legend
Is the full interview uploaded? I hope there is stuff about his motocross career
Eric Swartz yeah the full podcast is on this channel, probably one of the best interviews I've ever watched from start to finish
Brain Deegan is the man but can’t even come close to Travis
Brain😂
Not true!!!
Travis is still the goat
Travis Morse 😂
Travis Morse very very true!
I'm in awe of all these guys...
Love the show buddy!! 👍
Wow, lots of hate comments for both Travis and Brian, inc his family. I think they are all good role models and BD is doing great with his kids. He is not only teaching them to hone their skills, but to brand themselves and act as role models to their peers. I expect great things from the kids and enjoy watching them rise in the ranks. Good luck Deegan family and I wish Travis's offspring equal success.
Right? I completely agree. When I first started watching their CZcams channel I was shocked at how calm and relaxed and just a chill guy Brian has become. Seems super positive. big fan
Get off their nut sacks
@@mickeybeahl2233 , hate much? What have you done for yourself and family?
The entire freestyle movement owes it's very existence to Jeremy McGrath. When he pulled that first finish line nac-nac, that sport was born.
Actually Brian Swink did it long before McGrath
They stole most of their tricks from bmx dirt jumpers and renamed most of them.
@Fek Fekkenstein but how many people saw those vids. McGrath brought it to the masses. Not just the hardcore riders who bought DVDs.
Um, Danny Magoo Chandler would cross up a friggin CR500 just to stay in shape.
Doing something on a BMX is a little different than a 200 pound dirt bike
That this was gunna b beef, but the way Travis talks about it there’s actually so much respect
I have xgames 9 on vhs I recorded when watching live. I still get chills watching them pull the first 360s
It's like the Hawk vs Hosoi skate rivalry in the 80's.
mykrrrr Rocket Air anyone? So cool back in the day. Loved my Hammerhead board.
Oh maan, take me back to the good ol days!!!!!!! Boy do I ever miss 'em! much love to Deegan and Pastrana, true legends in the sport.
TP is the man. So down to earth and honest. Honestly seems like such a nice dude.
Love the content!!
Brian knows how to play the game to make money and for show, and travis honestly just wanted to do what he loves and ride. But Travis, being a late bloomer in the business aspect, figured it out later and well if you follow Travis you know the rest... and that's what I got out of hearing this video. You still the man Travis
Isn't the Nitro Circus a show...for profit?
Lou Sassle Gene is just saying that in the time that Deegan was building the metal mulisha Travis just wanted to ride. Now Travis is getting Into the business side later after his career
Sean Madilly Bahhhh bahhh the sheep always follow
I still buy all the 199 dirtbikes in Wal-Mart 2019 lol
I have McGrath KTM toy bikes & figures!
Seen tonyhawk bnx bikes at Walmart
199 ways to die
The positive rivalry between those two not just in FMX, they brought it to monster truck and rally cross too. It's the bestest moment in extreme sport history.
I have Met Brian Deegan and his son Haiden Deegan at Redbud. Great family and im a lifelong fan of freestyle motocross. To meet you one day would be the best man. I absolutely loved watching you and Brian push the sport to another level time and time again. Thank you for all you have done man. I absolutely loved everything you guys did out there. God bless you both
Was at the X Games when Carey Hart missed the first backflip. It was insane how high he was and how scary that fall was. Now backflips seem like nothing. At the time it was unbelievable anyone could land it or had the balls to try it. Foam pits changed the game.
Foam pits ruined the sport.
Def an awesome take on early days of freestyle moto. They made espn want X games but Jeremy McGrath opened the door for all these guys.
Travis is such a class act. Soooo humble. True legend
Gypsy tales great interview, TP what a great ambassador for moto/freestyle/rally/etc.. doesn't need tattoos everywhere to be cool.. he just is cool!
Travis pastrana is the greatest motorcycle rider of all time hands down
There are a lot of great riders in different eras. Travis is a great rider for what he has done for his generation.
That's a broad category. Most influential though probably
Let's not forget his rally racing! 💪💪💪
Better than McGrath ? Better than RC ? Better then JS7 ? Thats laughable dude...
Tall Mike not laughable at all.. the guy does things on motorcycles that most have never even thought of, you’re comparing a modern day evil kninevel to some guys that are just good at racing. There is no question pastrana is the best motorcycle rider of all time.. the proof is in the pudding..
I believe that first double backflip TP199 pulled was the highlight of Xgames.
Very cool interview/podcast. Deegan and Pastrana are both great guys.
"17 years old, why do you want to fight me ?" That's the 90's for you.
None ever talks about this but Deegan was not the first to land the 360. He did a 270 and it washed out that extra 1/4 turn at the LA Coliseum. Travis did with full rotation after smashing his face a few times.
Remember when pastrana jumped the berm into the ocean on (I believe) the first x games. That was amazing.
He got in so much trouble for doing that 🤣
Managed to luck out and meet Travis last year at an event, super nice guy and very down to earth 👌👍

I met Travis at the Xgames in San Francisco, the kid was, and still is a Savage! Jumped in the SF bay off of the corner berm with his RM125. lol
You boys propped it up!
Can you blame the guy for marketing himself in a profitable way? He probably knew Travis was better (deep down) so he had to work harder on building his brand than Travis. Both legends.
Deegan was smart. Made his name into a brand and set himself up so his kids can slide through the industry with out having to make a name for themselves.
Timothy Hutton Truth. Strategy.
@wile E who wouldn't be. Kid was born and put on toys most of us dream about until we are old enough to work and buy one for ourselves.
@wile E how is that not a product of his environment. Most dad's aren't teaching there kids flips because they don't have the know how to do it safely. Plus having a family where risk and possible harm is normal. How many other mom's wouldn't be shutting that down instantly. This kids whole life has been hanging out with the most talented riders in the world. If a kid is a sponge he is soaking up Shit other parents are paying a fortune to get.
@wile E what kid isn't.
@wile E you mean the tens of thousands of kids that Don t wake up and head to a track where all your dad's best friends have had the top 5 number plates on there bikes. Huh go figure.
Rewatching this again after the way degan handled the claim earlier last year reminds me of so much
Pastrana cursed. Never heard that before! Golly!
Ha, I thought the same exact thing!
Still cant believe im friends with travis, I'm literally nobody. Yet he believed in me and gave me a chance and treated me life family every step of the way. Deagan and MM never gave me an ounce of energy or a minute of their time and I was sponsored by them

I met Travis when I was 8 at New England Forest Rally, super down to earth and funny dude
He's the man!
I grew up on any Sunday! And my first bike was a 1992 rm 80!!
I love how the title is made so that you think Travis is trying to fight with Deegan but in reality it is him giving him props and saying that he was a nice guy lol
I remember back in my day when the crusty Demons series 1st came out in this crazy guy wearing baggy cow print pants and willing to jump anything by the name of Seth Enslow was just a madman on two wheels really loved watching that guy ride he wasn’t really a motocross dude he was that dude with the crew that somebody said hey go jump that and he was like OK how fast
Jesus that jump is crusty demons was FUCKING INSANE. First time I saw that 🤯🤢🤮 Then he just went bigger and bigger.
A classic “Beatles vs stones” situation. Both are good on their own, but the dynamics and differences between the two is what makes people pay attention and get invested.
It was as close to a wrestling type rivalry we’ve ever seen in action sports. Growing up watching it was really cool and seeing those 2 as family dudes now and doing really well is equally as cool.
Travis shut it all down after the double back lol
