Great job…well explained and easy to follow. Super camera work.
Nice video, very interesting!
Your videos are superb!
Thank you just purchased one
Great concise content without unnecessary chitter chat.
These should be very similar and even better than he 2nd gen Fusion and escape hybrids which are legendary, taxi companies used escapes getting put up for auction still running with 400 and 600k miles. Im just so happy to see the more powerful electric side. Like the c max and hopefully a plug in hybrid soon
Your Maverick videos are peerless, and truly packed with solid technical information!
Do you see a way to service the "non-serviceable" trans fluid?
The transmission does not use fluid like a traditional automatic. There are no bands, friction clutches, or hydraulics. Therefore it does not need to be serviced any differently than you might with a manual gearbox - like a change every 100k or more miles if that.
The eCVT trans IS serviceable. CVTs do not have dipsticks. Similar to a
manual transmission they have a plug under the trans to drain & another
plug up high to fill & check for level. Best Practices is to change this oil
every 30K if you want to get long life from it.
!
Been waiting for my Hybrid Maverick since I ordered on June 23, 2021.
Volts don’t kill 🥰
BUT your video is great and thank you so much!
Amps kill but dat 400v finds the path through the body so its an accessory
“ Assuming a steady current flow (as opposed to a shock from a capacitor or from static electricity), shocks above 2,700 volts are often fatal, with those above 11,000 volts being usually fatal, though exceptional cases have been noted.”
@@mattkaiser8984 so volts do kill, but above 2700v.
Hybrid and Electric vehicles are around 400v, even though its high, would it be safe to work on as a DIY mechanic with proper insolation and repair practices?
I have a 2018 ford cmax that has the previous generation hf35 ecvt transmission and have changed the transmission fluid. It uses the mercon lv fluid and is just a drain and refill setup. I would assume the hf45 would be the same. There is no internal filter or flushingrequired.
Great video! I've re-watched it several times to learn as much as I can about my new hybrid Ford Maverick. Can you provide me more information on the function of the hybrid control unit (near the top of the transmission)?
It basically manages the electric flow between the battery, the traction motor and the generator. It's like a giant switch.
I hope there's a good service manual going to be available.
Great stuff here, Sam! Thank you! At roughly 2:02, when you start talking about the catalytic converter, could you speak a little bit more about that specifically? I'm not sure if you've seen, but there have been some reports on CZcams and on some Maverick-specific forums where folks with hybrids see a bright-red glowing catalytic converter when using remote start (especially in cold weather with the temp set relatively high). Have you guys been able to replicate that in your testing? Could it be intentionally designed that way to capture the exhaust heat for warming the cabin? Any thoughts about the red glow? It'd be great if y'all might be willing to investigate and/or do a video about it.
Usually the red hot cat means it's backed up. Not Good for the engine exhaust to be backed up.
It seems like there may be a few vehicles with this problem due to the software in the PCM. Ford communicated internally to their dealers that their engineers are working on a software update, hoping to release it in March. This doesn't seem to affect every hybrid and is not an official recall at this point, but it does look like a fix is coming. It could end up being a recall to get the update installed.
"Some 2022 Maverick and 2020-2022 Escape vehicles equipped with a 2.5L full hybrid electric vehicle (FHEV) powertrain may exhibit an idle surge and/or rough idle with high temperature in the catalytic convertor and sulfur odor in the cab. This may be due to the software installed in the powertrain control module (PCM).This condition does not affect vehicle durability and no additional diagnosis or service is required for this condition at this time. Inform customers that they can continue to drive the vehicle and engineering is currently developing a software update that is expected in the last week of March 2022. Once the softwareupdate is available, contact the customer and schedule a follow-up appointment for repair."

Question. Everytime the engine comes on does it use a traditonal starter, or does the igniton come on and it jump starts from being in motion?
The integrated starter/generator inside the transmission starts and stops the engine, it does not have a traditional starter. More info here: czcams.com/video/woBvHw4VYGE/video.html
WHERE'S THE KILL SWITCH FOR THE HYBRID BATTERY?
I would like to know if combustion engine is resleevable, or is there "repair" piston kits like say on Toyota, with slightly bigger diameter to match the wear, and overall how much thousand miles can it hold up until engine repairs, and is it costly engine, repairable etc. Mb you would consider such video one day, thx!)
It's really kind of a non-issue. By the time and engine wears to the point anything like liners or new pistons would be necessary the cost of doing such a job would likely be well more than the vehicle is worth. Hybrid's like this typically run 400-500,000 miles before engines start to wear to a point they are not working well because on a hybrid the engine is turned off half the time. At that mileage, the rest of the car would be barely worth the effort of even replacing an engine. And not we would not consider doing a video like that as we would have to wait around for a vehicle to wear out. We test new ones.
The engine isn't pretty but many connections seem easy to access.
How is cabin heat done? Is it strictly through radiator temp?
Heating is done through the coolant only. There is a heat exchanger in the exhaust system that captures heat for the coolant when/before the engine has not warmed sufficiently.
the ford maverick hybrid does the heater work in the winter time if the engine is not on i live in chicago i do not go on highway?
The engine will fire up and run to make the heater work if you have it turned on.
Did I understand correctly, if an LED bulb burns out the whole light assembly needs to be replaced?
How long do they plan on keeping light assembles in stock?
Correct, you need to replace the whole headlight unit if the LED goes. With normal halogen bulbs you can just replace the bulbs
@@matthewp1682 that can get expensive fast.
How long do led lights last?
@@caddmann they should outlast the life of the vehicle.
@@caddmann : in theory, LEDs can live a long time. But besides the led, there is the circuit board, and connections. I've heard of headlights being sold only in pairs, easier on inventory, not sure what Ford does. I saw an Audi the other day with half a tail light, led, not working. I was wondering how many $1000s that repair would be....
I wonder how much fuel economy is aided by led headlights?
So all 4 sparkplugs are accessible from the top? Thats cool.. no need to remove half of the engine to change the sparkplugs.. where is the catalyc converter located? Or should i ask, how easy to steal it? I like to wash my car , including the engine but with that high voltage under the hood ill be very affraid to throw water in there. Is it safe to wash the engine with water pressure? What kind of belt does the maverick hybrid use? How easy is to change the water pump?
Converter is just behind the engine. Generally cleaning the engine is safe, but high pressure sprayers are always a concern even with standard engines. There is no belt and no belt driven water pump.
I have had my Hybrid Maverick about 2 months.. I recently used my remote start and the motor sounds like a tractor! It got around 0 degrees in Missouri for a few days.. any suggestions?
Check the oil level.
i typically in my gas powered vehicles like to change my oil every 5k miles.. with the hybrid there is a mix between the electric motor and gas engine.. so how often should a person change there oil in a hybrid ?
The Maverick computer tells you when it's time. Owners manual talks of a 10k mile interval range that can go up to 15k miles depending on usage metrics. As of today ours has 12.5k miles and still has 25% oil life left. The engine runs half the time vs miles, doesn't need to be changed nearly as often as a conventional car.
@@TDTVGarage thank you for the information. I have a 2022 hybrid escape. I guess the escape will follow those guidelines as well.
Ford forgot to add oil change ports in the windage tray under the engine. Something like 13 bolts and the tray need to be removed to access the oil drain and filter. Maybe saved them a dollar on production costs
whether fuel injection is delivered to the intake manifold ?
The hybrid has port fuel injection
Does this engine have a timing belt or timing chain?
It has a timing chain.
I just received my first Hybrid. My 2023 XLT Hybrid is approaching 3000.0 miles and Ford Pass says my first oil change reports being due in 8400.0 miles or September 2024. When should I get first oil change due to brake in period? Thank you in advance.
Everyone has an opinion on it. Our first oil change was at 13k miles and it said we could have gone to 16k. It was fine, the oil was not a wasteland at all. Hybrid engines only run 50-60% of the miles. With synthetic oil the old fashioned wives tale of "change your oil ever 3-5k miles" is long gone.
@@TDTVGarage thanks
So the motor has only Port injection, no Direct? This is great news!!!!!
Dip stick transmission not unit servicing? What that mean?
Means you don't check your fluid on the transmission nor do you service it.
@@TDTVGarage SAME WAS SAID FOR THE PRIUS AS THE STEALERSHIP WANT TO SHORTEN THE LIFE OF THE TRUCK TO COME BACK WITH A NEW ONE
@@TDTVGarage Are you able to provide greater detail? Is there any way to change it?
How reliable and dependable is this Hybrid engine.
This engine and hybrid system has been in production for many years. You research data on the Ford Escape, Ford Fusion and Ford CMAX to see how it has performed.
@@TDTVGarage I will research it. As a mechanic what is your opinion on it?
Ford Escape and Ford CMAX hybrids with nearly the identical powertrain have proven very bulletproof being used as Taxis in places like NY for decades often racking up 400-500k miles. We own the Maverick Hybrid used in this video and its pretty issue free thus far. Ultimately is us under warranty for 8 years, 100 miles so it really matters not if there are issues.
@@TDTVGarageyeah they're very reliable. I own a 2013 ford cmax and 2013 ford fusion hybrid. The fusion has almost a quarter million miles and I've only had to replace a speed sensor. Not even brake pads yet. Original suspension is still great! The cmax has 110k miles and runs great. Bought a new set of tires for it today and it's like a new car again 😅 I use both for Uber
WAIT!! did you say it port injected? So this isn't a DI engine?
Not direct-injected. As shown in the video you can see the port fuel injection system clearly.
It's better then DI , no extra carbon build up to clean. I will never own a DI engine again without auxiliary port fuel injection. Sometimes older is better.
p͎r͎o͎m͎o͎s͎m͎ ?
Ecoboost 2.0T baby. 😉
Zero discussion/explanation on the hybrid motors and ECVT. Other than saying it's an Atkinson engine, not much info. More homework is required before you can call this an explanation of the Maverick hybrid engine
Maybe next time you feel the need to criticize you should do some research first. This video is a basic overview, our more in-depth video that's exactly what you complain missing is here (found on our Maverick playlist). czcams.com/video/woBvHw4VYGE/video.html
