Good video. I have a 2022 Ford Escape hybrid, the same engine and similar cover. I used to change my own oil, but after turning 70, decided to let my Ford dealer do it. They will use my supplied oil and filter Mobil One. They charge me less than $40 for the "works"which includes tire rotation and fluid top off. To me it is worth it especially with the bottom cover.

A couple days ago I took my Maverick hybrid back to the dealer for recalls. Oil change, $110, "I'll do it myself".
If you pay $40 for 0w-20 and $15 for a filter and then pay them $40 then that’s still $95. I don’t see the major savings when the dealer can just do everything
@@naviharriram9785 I have the choice of the oil. I have used Mobil 1 since it came out and never had problems, I'm not sure what oil they use. To me frequent oil changes with a great quality oil is the best way to prolong the life of the car.
I really appreciate your succinct, technically knowledgeable and well edited videos on the Maverick. The build date for my 2022 XLT hybrid is the last week of October; I can't wait to get it. In the meantime, I am continuing to drive my 2016 PHEV Ford C-MAX. Given my driving habits, it's easily possible to go more than 20,000 miles between oil changes. The ICE engine simply doesn't run that often. And with regenerative braking, the brake pads seem to last forever. The advantages of electrified vehicles have become hard to ignore.
Tech tip, put a disposable plastic cup over the oil filter and unscrew it. The oil will go in the cup, keeping everything nice and clean...😊
Wow that is one easy access oil filter! I got mine at 12K miles and the oil sticker said I should change it at 20k and I was thinking "that cant be right!" now I know. I learned a lot including checking the oil life, I cannot believe modern cars are so smart. I still have my 245k mile 02 Tacoma so when I got the Maverick I thought "I dont need all this fancy new technology" but I secretly like it!

For hybrids break in oil change is 4000 miles since engine is typically on 2/3rds of the time. Car companies will recommend later oil change as they want the car to last only for a little longer than warranty.
Great job! About to do my first one on my Maverick and it’s got almost 13,000 miles too and the oil doesn’t look that bad either but it’s been 18 months since I got it so figured I should. I only ever use full synthetic the last 15 years doing my own oil changes and love it!

Just took mine to have oil changed , 15,000 miles , computer said it had 13% oil life remaining . As best I can tell , The amount of time you spend driving in electric really changes how quickly you need to change your oil. Computer says we have averaged almost 52 miles per gallon over the 15,000 miles .
Great video. Just did my first oil change on my '23 hybrid at 5000 miles. Tough to break the old habit of letting engine warm up to operating temp (like on a full gas engine) on the hybrid for recheck oil level. Did do the press the gas pedal trick to get the engine to run oil through. Caution to those who press the pedal to run. Don't press pedal to floor or engine will bump high RPM (high idle for a few seconds) at first run after oil change. Just lighly tap pedal to run engine after change. Not to the floor. Every new vehicle I ever owned which is nearing 50 had the OEM filter put on by a gorilla....all of them

Dudes in AZ and it's hot af there. Normal for some coolant to evaporate when it's 120 degrees for days on end.

I've heard that the Eco-boost oil tends to get fuel in it. The Hybrid is much better in that regard. I'm looking for to our Maverick showing up very soon. Been watching your updates on this model for quite some time now.
My owners manual for the 2023 hybrid shows bringing the front tires straight back to the rear and the rear tires criss-cross to the front when rotating.
Since getting the Maverinc Hybrid, I feel I've been a lot easier on the engine than I was on my Corolla. Not sure if its because I want to minimize fuel consumption on the Hybrid or because I don't think the Ford can handle the abuse that the Toyota could lol. Either way I'm just shy of 10,000 km (6200 mi) and I'm at about 50% oil life remaining. I'm probably good until next April the way and amount that I'm driving.
Follow those computer estimates if you want to meet the 100k standard...only 😂

Longer oil change intervals makes sense except for the break in period would you agree?
The idea that oil needs to be changed faster for "break in" is an old dad's tale. A myth.
Barely loosen the oil filter then use a red plastic cup to fit over, squeeze gently and continue to unscrew. The cup will catch the oil dripping from the filter- no mess and no more "It's just how it goes" ;-)

I love that the Maverick tells you when oil change is needed!! I’m at 8,500 miles now with mine and it tells me I have approximately 1,600 miles left before needing my first oil change. I drive the turbo engine. I ignore the reminder calls from my Ford dealership because otherwise, I would unnecessarily change my oil too often and too soon. I super love the colorful decal on your Maverick, BTW.
Does the eCVT transmission on the Maverick Hybrid have drain and fill plugs also? I own a 2010 Escape Hybrid and although the owner's manual omits changing the fluid and leaves it up to Ford, I change mine every 60,000 miles. I would really like to know because I want to buy one of these trucks, but there are a few details I still want to be satisfied about.
Would you recommend adding a fumoto or stahlbus oil valves for Future easier changes?
The 3000-mile recommendation came from the oil companies. Taxi companies in NYC as far back as the 70's regularly changed oil in their cars every 7500 miles.
When you checked the oil before the change, did you notice what the oil level was?
If I owned one, on the first oil change, I'd install inspection ports for the filter and drain. After all, with luck, oil changes will be over 90 % of maintenance. My 11 y old present vehicle has these.
There is one point you may have missed: oil degrades over time, even without engine running. So you still should change it after a year or so, no matter what.

Why was the coolent low at 13K Miles ?
Shouldn’t have to add unless you have a leak, it doesn’t evaporate in a sealed system.
On the contrary, here in Arizona with extreme heat it is not "odd" to need to top off coolant annually - at least not in the neat 30 years we have had vehicles here.
If you want to keep your engine in tip top shape, the Ford techs I trust say you should change it quite often. Of course, many of us got the recall that may replace the block...
Where do you get the manual you reference in the video? Seems my owners manual doesn't say squat about inspection.
This video is a great tutorial and I can't wait until my first oil change. Would you recommend spraying some rubber rejuvenator on the rubber gaskets and whatnot in the suspension or you're under there? Scotty kilmore recommends it, but I'm always open too new information.
We tend to shy away from products that are considered "dressings" or "coatings". While we don't know of the specific one(s) you refer to, these often purport to help but sometimes the chemicals in them can actually cause rubber and plastics to degrade over time.
Turbo Hybrid type engines require slightly less mileage to do an oil change.

You are right about the 40%-60% rule for Hybrids.
The gas engine simply doesnt run as often as a non-Hybrid does, so longer oil drain intervals are allowed.
I would note, however, you should STILL CHECK your Oil at least every other fuel fill up to be sure you arent missing any potential oil leaks or burning of oil.
This is becoming more of a problem these days with longer oil change intervals!
People are getting lazy in this regard these days.

Nice video as always. Considering that you let the oil go over 13,000 mi, and you will probably do that again, I'm disappointed in your choice of oil filters.. fram could be possibly the worst, and considering you're letting the oil go so long I think you could have made a better choice, just about any choice would have been better.
Great and very useful video. Is the air filter and cabin filter relatively easy to check/ replace on the hybrid? The Ford Transit van nearly requires disassembly of van to check air filter.

Ford dealer wants $130 for an oil change. Most folks probably wouldn't consider that "cheap".
when you say 5.7 qrts. does that mean 5 qrts and 7 ozs? or does .7 mean 70% of a quart which would equal to 22oz?
5.7 quarts means 5.7 quarts. Yes, .7 means 70% of a quart.

@@TDTVGarage Well, this is the 1st "non-truck" vehicle I have had in years. The last was a 2022 Silverado HD with 11 grease zerks.
I have a 2019 Toyota Tacoma SR that uses 0W-20 synthetic oil. I drive between 2500 to 3000 a year. I was told seeing how I do not drive allot of miles it was best to get my oil changed once a year. I'm wanting to trade for a 2024 Ford Maverick XL and wondering if I shouldn't still get a once a year oil change in it as well.
Most of the sources that tell us we should change our oil once a year regardless of mileage are people who sell oil changes. Most of the time it really just isn't necessary.

We have a 2023 Lariat Looking for SXM radio install. Everything says the Lariat package can accommodate the APP, but cannot figure out how to do it
Sam, I just finished my second oil change on my Lariat hybrid and found a light, slightly darker coating of oil on part of the bottom of the ECVT housing. This oil was not there for my first oil vhange.
At the 1:50 mark. it looks like you have the same discoloration. Did you notice it during your oil change or during any subsequent oil change?
BTW, how can I check my ECVT oil level?
The Ford OEM oil filter is good for maybe 7,500 miles max...
What are the size of those bolts you remove in 1:28? Got an oil change at an oil shop and they never put those bolts back. They’ve lost it…

15-screws on that shield is ridiculous…why not have a smaller one easy to remove over the drain and filter like other vehicles?? (Toyota, Scion, Mazda, Hyundai). They have 3-4 screws or push pins. And it’s 5,000 miles or 6-months unless you like having blown head gaskets. (Prius owners who only do 10,000 mile oil changes have learned this the hard way)
My Kuga phev says I have 3 months until oil has to be changed. Car is then 10 months old. I have driven 1500 mil. Ford Service is not until 3000 mil. And I use it as a phev and in between as a hybrid. I dont drive hard so...???
I recently discovered that the ford maverick hybrids were built with enough room to accommodate a second hybrid battery for the rotors. My question is how is this possible? Is is at simple as clipping the battery in? Would it need to be reprogrammed? Not only would this reduce the charge frequency but also increase the power of the electric rotors and likely fuel economy
It's not really that feasible unless you are an engineering firm. And you would spend well more money than the truck is worth to achieve a result that is hardly worth it.
@@TDTVGarage I called ford, the battery itself would cost 1900$ and then a new harness cable would also need to be purchased to in-line the two batteries. But again, the mavericks battery bay already includes enough room behind the steel casing to do just that
I don't see how you would need to be topping off coolant at almost 14,000 miles. Like, why would it be "burning" coolant or be building pressure to send coolant out the overflow hose? So if you do another oil change at 28,000 miles, you going to be topping off coolant again?
Here in Arizona with extreme heat in the summers exceeding 110 degrees daily it's pretty common to have to top off coolant in our cars at least once or twice a year. It didn't raise any red flags here, not out of the ordinary.

Great video! Question for you, my hybrid maverick came from factory with oil filter wayyy over torqued. Ive tried muscle with rubber gloves and my oil filter wrench with no success. Any tips on getting off an over torqued oil filter?
Did you finally figure out out to get the filter off. I haven't had to change oil yet. I have the 3 claw adjustable oil wrench that clamps on filter and works well. i have seen others on the tube using it. bought at walmart 3 yrs ago

The hybrid battery is liquid cooled.
What fram oil filter did you use ?
Can I use 0.7 qt. of 0W40 that I have on hand and want to use up? And then use 0W20 from a 5qt jug without doing any damage to the hybrid engine?
I'm not an expert but generally yes. If you get technical some oil charts recommend running thicker oil in the summer and thinner in the winter. But oil is cheap
Changing the oil and filter is more than about the oil breaking down, it's about changing both well before they break down. Hybrids don't use the gas engine as much so a 12,000 mile oil change intervals might be ok, but a turbocharged 4 cylinder engine (like the 2.0 EcoBoost) should be changed at 5,000 or sooner if hauling, towing or extended idling. So oil changes are not an exact science except for contamination like gas or metal that might buildup in the oil ....the oil itself should still be good.
is the ring around the oil drain bolt reusable or do you need a new one every time you do the oil change?
It’s part of the bolt. It’s important not to over tighten. I use a torque wrench and tighten to factory specifications.
Will this void your warranty? How do you log your information for the warranty?
Regular maintenance is good for your warranty. There is no logging required. You keep your receipts to prove it was done if it ever comes up.

What does the owners manual say on oil changes. The hybrid has a 2.5 so why wait so long?
The owners manual states (as discussed in the video) that your oil change interval is determined by the computer which monitors engine usage, miles and other factors to continually grade the oil condition. They can go up to 15-16k miles with low impact usage. As stated in the video ours would have been happy to go several thousand more miles, but we decided to change it earlier than it recommended. It is none the less not that long a time frame for a hybrid as again discussed in the video, the engine is only running about 50-60% of driving miles, so it's not the same change interval as a conventional ICE vehicle (which by the way most are recommending 10k oil change intervals these days).

I guess the 13,000 mile oil changes that you attribute to for this vehicle may work it may not. You will see when it get to 100,000 miles 120 thousand miles and to see if this questionable engine will be running. An extra oil change is cheap insurance to ensure longevity on a vehicle.
That's the notion that people who make money doing oil changes keep repeating to the consuming public.
I think you ought to send the oil off at the 13000 mile oil change to Blackstone labs to give in analysis of the oil to get it true reading right now that's just your personal opinion with the oil change and my personal opinion was different

Oil is cheap...engines are expensive.
A starting and stopping engine is may more stressful than a constant running engine.
Hopefully this isn’t the first first oil change on the car. I’m going to change my new mavericks oil at about 1000-1500 miles to remove all the metal scrappings from the fresh engine. Then I’ll do changes every 10k. Trust me, even at 1000 miles the oil will be black and full of metal. And then it’s all gold from there
It was the first time and the oil was fine. It's an old wives tale that you need to do your first oil change at "X" miles. Modern engines, modern synthetic oil, hybrids - simply not needed.
I drive a Mitsubishi Montero, I didn’t need to watch this. My computer doesn’t tell me when it’s time, it forgets how to idle.
Your "the engine only runs 1/2 the time" logic is FLAWED. The most engine wear is during ICE starting. So the ICE in a hybrid system actually needs more frequent oil changes that a traditional "full time" ICE.
I can't believe you used a FRAM oil filter.. They are one of the worst filters on the market. I would clearly use a high quality filter if I am going to drive 13,000 miles. I use a high quality filter for all miles and all engines. There are plenty of of CZcams videos on oil filters.
The fram tough guard filter he used is rated for synthetic oil and 15000 miles. It's not the same as the old orange ones that ruined engines in the past.
You are 100% wrong on the oil change interval. Under the Scheduled Maintenance section of the 2022 Ford Maverick owners manual page 436 it states… “Never exceed one year or 10,000 mi (16,000 km) between oil change intervals.” So you were over 3k miles above this guidance.
No. It states on page 436, "This interval may be up to one year or 10,000 mi (16,000 km), hybrid vehicles could exceed 10,000 mi (16,000 km)." Then it stipulates, "If your information display resets prematurely or becomes inoperative,.......Never exceed one year or 10,000 mi (16,000 km) between oil change intervals."
What it says is that if the oil monitor is not working, is not able to calculate oil life, or you accidentally lost data by prematurely resetting it - THEN - default to a maximum of 10,000 to be safe.
