Victoria, Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII (Abdicated), George VI, Elizabeth II, Charles III
The “blackouts” were enshrined in law. Every building had to have blackout curtains and street lamps were extinguished. Anyone caught breaking the law would be fined or even banged up!
But who'd win in a fight? My money's on Vicky!
She was very short, so could probably punch most of them in the bollocks without bending.
The Brush Strokes bit appears in every episode of Cunk on Britain, just for absurdity I think, not connected to anything else. It was a sitcom about a painter decorator. 😊xx
The composer she interviews early on is Howard Goodall, who wrote the theme tunes to Blackadder, Red Dwarf & Mr Bean.
... and The Vicar of Dibley
Practically every school child in the UK knows the Wilfred Owen poem.
As a little kid I got to run around playing right up to the standing stones at Stonehenge…That’s how old I am.
The Brodie helmet was faster and cheaper to make (pressed from sheet metal) than other more shaped models.
…and also kept the rain off your tea and ciggies.
... and Americans in the First World War wore the same design of helmet as the British. The style Connor describes was later.
i remember watching a documentary when i was a child that i cant find anymore, but in it a British veteran said that the British world war helmets had only one advantage over all the other helmets in the wars, and that was their shape made them like a wok which made it better to put over a fire and cook with.
If anyone is interested the poem at around 10:30-11:00 is Wilfred Owen's Dulce Et Decorum Est
We got the idea 👍
I don't think anyone has said this but "King Edward" is also a type of potato in the UK - Hence the joke that "King Edward became King, despite being a potato."
Golden Wonder is a very popular brand of potato crisps in the UK. You know how much Philomena loves her crisps 🥔
(Mentioned in the opening sequence) 😊xx
No-one remembers what the French helmets look like because the always surrender too fast for anyone to get a picture or notice 😂
Glad you’re doing more Philomena Cunk, she’s so funny! looking forward to Yes minister!
The BBC started the first regular TV service in the world. John Logie Baird is regarded as the inventor although there were lots of people experimenting.
Regarding the Blackout in WWII, there were special inspectors going round the streets to make sure there were no lights showing.
You're not wrong about that German/N*zi (don't have the choice about censoring it unfortunately). In France we're taught at school the difference between the two. We even go further, calling the SS and others N*zi and the regular Wermarcht Germans. It's important to realize that despite the war, most Germans dream wasn't to go k*ll people in an other country. So that differentiation is quite important to make, and it helps to understand better the implications of WW2
To be fair, the Wehrmacht was entirely complicit in many war crimes, especially on the eastern front. Three Arrows has a great video on it. The Wehrmacht wasn't as rabid as the SS, but there was no real strict divide between the two when it came to the horrors committed against mostly civilians. The Luftwaffe bombed civilians, after all.
@@GuitarOwnsDrums yeah, they definitely were complicit, I am absolutely not trying to minimize what they did. I only believe there is a difference between a true believer of the n*zi ideology and a simple soldier. At the end of the day, the result is the same unfortunately
Poof = derogatory term for a gay man. That's probably what you're thinking of. We have a variety of potato here called King Edward
British helmets were designed for shrapnel fall from shells. When the shrapnel fell it was meant to bounce off of the British helmets. We actually didn't even have helmets until about 2 years into the war, just caps. If we were being shot at directly survival was unlikely regardless of the shape of the helmet, so we focused on the things we could survive with a well designed helmet. In contrast towards the end some of the german helmets had heavy metal plates in the front that were meant to try and stop bullets, but that were so front heavy they struggled to hold up their heads.
25:45 I think the reference to the comedy series “Brush Strokes” was just a random surreal bit of nonsense for no reason
People often link times in history to significant events, such as "that was around the time of Agincourt" or "During World War Two" and so to use a mostly forgotten and inconsequential sitcom as a reference point in history is pure comedic genius.
Clement Attlee was Prime Minister 1945-51 (the Labour government which set up the National Health Service). Anthony Eden (1955-57) took over after the retirement of Winton Churchill.
The British and American helmets of WW1 were very similar. It is not until WW2 that the iconic M1 U.S. helmet appeared.
The British (Brodie) helmets were designed specificly to protect from shrapnel from shelling . They are wide to protect from above.
21:57 people had special curtains called blackout curtains
01:36 Stonehenge was up for sale in 1915. The 30 acres + Stonehenge went for £6,600.
I don't think El Gar will be suing you for royalties.
You're absolutely right, in the UK "pouf" is an old-fashioned word for a male homosexual. And King Edward is a variety of potatoes.
She means casualty, which has been on bbc for ever, not Dr who
20:50 I think she is talking more about how the English royal family was connected to the germans, like Elizabeth's uncle (the one that later became king for a year but renounced, like said in 31:30) being a nazi and all that.
There'd be a very loud siren to warn people/let them know with the lights thing and getting to a shelter etc
They didn't switch off the lights in a given area when an air raid was expected. Everything was already in total darkness for the whole of the War.
All homes in Britain had blackout curtains on doors and windows to prevent any leakage of light.
Street lighting was permanently switched off for the duration of the War. Traffic lights and car headlights were adapted to shine towards the ground.
Few people owned cars and petrol was scarce. Those with sense would refrain from making inessential journeys and avoid driving after dark because of safety issues.
The blackout was policed by local Air Raid Protection (ARP) wardens and failure to comply was a criminal offence.
Clement Atlee was PM directly after Churchill was voted out in 1946.
1945
You were right the first time: Victoria then Edward, then George, then another George and then the queen we had until very recently and now Charles
Between George V and George VI there was Edward VIII (who abdicated after about a year).
Victoria-Edward VII-George V- Edward VIII (abdicated)-George VI-Elizabeth II- Charles III.
Thanks! I was hoping you'd react to more episodes! So now you've done episodes 3, 4 and 5...are you gonna do episode 1 and 2 lol?
You’re correct thinking that was Attlee but Attlee replaced Churchill Edna came in the 50’s
Your hair looks great!
Poor old Sir Edward Elgar loathed, hated & detested the words that were put to his music. Every time we see a Union Flag & lots of people looking at the funeral of some royal, they play Land of Open Glory & Elgar once more turns in his grave.
In the 1st World War American soldiers wore the same helmets as the British. All windows were blacked out and wardens patrolled the streets to ensure this was done.
When I was young you could go right up to the stonehenge, there were very few people around. Times have changed and it now needs to be protected.
The US first world war helmet was very similar to the British helmet the US only changed in 1941.
WW1 US troops used the British pattern helmet.
Leggo haircuts 😂😂
The British helmet was designed to protect against shrapnel rather than rifle fire because most soldiers died from shelling.
That's true for the American and German WW2 helmets too though.
yeh radio is still very popular in the UK tbh xD. Maybe not in US.
King Edward is the name of a potato here 🤣
19:39 ? WHAT? WHAT WAS YOU GONNA SAY
Yeah, even as a Brit, when I hear "BBC", the broadcasting company is NOT the first thing I think of
The American helmets in WW1 were pretty much identical to the British helmets. They protected from falling debris.
Queen Victoria 1837-1901
King Edward VII 1901-1910
King George V 1910-1936
King Edward VIII 1936-1936
King George VI 1936-1952
Queen Elizabeth II 1952-2022
Remember: VEGEGE

The Brits wore helmets that offered little protection just to save on metal.
Look up the line of monarchs!
They had wardens, who went around knocking on doors to get them to close there curtains, and they also had black out blinds, and people in them days were all in it together fighting for the freedom of the world
My Nana lived through the war in London and until the day she died, she continued to put pegs on her curtains where they closed just as she did during WWII. Old habits die hard.
It’s not communism it’s socialism
"Poofy" has an English slang 😮 ...
Why did they call it World War One? I think this is meant to be satire - but there are people stupid enough to think that's what it was called at the time. I read a story which was set in the 17th Century that had two glaring anachronisms. There was a mention of a ship called, 'Queen Elizabeth l' , and 'Native Americans.' I realise the Author was American and might not know much about British history - but they must have heard of Queen Victoria, and perhaps King John - even if they know little about either of these monarchs. Did they not wonder, why they are not called King John l or Queen Victoria l ?
20:37 Not all Germans were Nazis and not all Nazis were German so yes, you have a point.
"If you sang it in like Portuguese, would it still feel British or would that just f**king ruin it?"
I can't put into words how happy stuff like that makes me. It's too funny.
Cheap to produce a helmet pressed from one piece of steel I reckon.
Can somebody do a video of all Connor's aborted sneezes please?
Connor's crush on Cunk is.... relatable
VR - EVIIR - GVR - EVIIIR (abd) - GVIR - EIIR- CIIIR
Blackout curtains.
It was
Victoria
Edward VII
George V
Edward VIII
George VI
Elizabeth II
And now it's
Charles III
Clement Attlee 1945-51, then Churchill returned 51-55
30:30 Reverse Brexit... tixerb
Sea shells 😅😅😅😅😅
Welfare state isn’t communism it’s more likened to socialism
Poof is a gay man in the UK - those that swagger as opposed to the lovely ones that can be your best friend 🙂
😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂
She presented have I got news for you, available on CZcams Bbc
Please tell me you didn't say "de Gaulle" when a photo of Orwell came up. Please.
Now don't say anything else.
I'm a bit poofy 🏳🌈🏳🌈🤣🤣😂😂✌✌☮☮❤❤
I'm sure I've seen picture or footage of American G.I's using the same helmet or something very similar at that time.'
16:30 - I *HATE* that warbling, shaky ear-piercing shrieky way women sang back in those days. It makes my ears wanna shit blood.
I could give you a bad hair cut 1
Nope, sorry.
We all need less poofing.
The British "hats" in WW1 weren't a fashion statement. Unlike baseball caps clearly...(You did ask...although I'm not sure a baseball cap makes anyone look less-poofy...just an opinion lol)
