How To: Flush Your Outboard Boat Motor Correctly

- This video shows you how to flush your outboard engine using a freshwater hose. It demonstrates two methods. One method utilizes the backwash port without the engine running. The second method uses water ear muffs to flush the engine while running.

Nice job and great Salsa music selection.
love the sound of those older Johnson/Evinrudes waking up!
Awesome videos man!!!! I watched every video you posted.
Nice job on your video. Thanks.
Nice soothing salsa music, really enjoyed that.
Very informative. Thank you!
Very good information!
Correct. I found the flushing port only allows water to back flush through the cylinder heads, but doesn't allow the impeller to rotate properly. What this does, is actually doesn't let your motor regulate proper cylinder head temperature, but instead, runs too cold. I don't think it will damage the motor itself, but could possibly take out the impeller over time.
Good job, thanks! Can the flush port be used with motor running?
Nice video. Thanks man.
well done video. thank you
Great Video
Nice job, I have a general question can I flash the engine in an horizontal position when in water using your first method without running the motor? (or it has to be in a vertical position either out or in water)-Thanks
Whats spark plug type for that Johnson OceanPro 150?
Would you be able to run antifreeze through this method.?
can that flush plug stay on all the time or does it have to be removed because i lost the original flush plug cant seem to find a replacement
Good vid.....helpful...thx!!
+brianrudi rudi You're welcome.
It's a standard large spark plug socket. Off the top of my head, I think it's 13/16, but I could be wrong.
Can you run the engine by just using the flushing hose? Is there any possible issues by doing it this way, over the ear muffs over the intake? I connected my hose, and ran the engine. The water pump still pumped water out, but the manual states to use the intake side only when running the engine.
can useing sopy water clean out old outboards?
What year is that motor I bought a boat with the same style motor but it doesn't have that year it was made?
Thanks for sharing. Is it necesary to flush both methods? Is one better than the other?
How’s water get to the pump this way? Seems like it would burn or score the pump.
Do you think that just doing the back flush with clean out the motor enough or do you still have to do the ear muffs after the back flush.
Best video
what could be going on? is my water impeller defective, or is trash keeping it from flowing properly, and what do I do to correct this, it has a lot of steam coming from the motor at just half throttle, out of the pee hole also.
Just a reminder: on the 60 and 90 degree loopers (90-300hp) with the high pressure water pumps: DO NOT RUN IT WITH THE FLUSH ADAPTER SCREWED IN! He didn't use one here, but if you leave the quick-connect in they often leak, causing hot spots on the block because the powerhead can't fill up with water all the way. the factory telltale piece also acts as a restrictor. many a motor fried that way!

What year motor on video
Personally, I notice the water it significantly warmer on my garden hose that when in the lake water. This is the case even when the lake water is warmer than my hose water. I assume the motor's waterpump is able to circulate the water better sucking from both sides while in the lake... as opposed to only one side while on the water hose. The pee hole is really only an indicator that the pump is functioning... not necessarily functioning correctly!
Do you know what size socket you used to remove the black plastic piece from the whole you put the hose in?
318/16ths. Tough socket to find
Is water supposed to come out of the exhaust ports when the engine is running.
+realcoolphil Yes. You also want to be sure that when it's running you still have some water escaping the muffs on both sides. Just having water at the indicator is no guarantee, I've seen several overheat while still peeing a good stream from the indicator. The one in the vid appeared to be just at the edge of minimum water flow.
You should only run the engine with the hose connected to the water intakes via an ear muff adapter. As far as I know none of the inline hose adapter flushing ports are designed to be used for running the engine and can cause damage if used that way. Check your user manual.
Yes welder it can, I use liquid soap on every flush out and it does not hurt anything.
Since the engine is not hot, how does the water get through a closed thermostat?
I always take my thermostats out when flushing thru the tell tale, with the engine off. Blown out alot of sand and trash that would have ended up stuck in the small t-stat holes
I lost the plug do I need to have it on at all time??
Jose Montes I have the same question :/
It is not necessary to flush both ways and using the port while not running is probably best. It also doesn't wake the neighbors when we get home late!!! That being said, it is important to run the motor on the hose periodically between longer breaks to ensure proper running when you decide to use it again.
I need that same cowling. Anyone selling johnson 150 cowling please.....I cant find anywhere.
whats going on bud, I know this was posted some time ago, but this is the closest thing I can get to getting some questions answered. I have a 40hp 91 model, I just had the impeller replaced, I went fishing in a river that was full of debree, the next time I went out I noticed that my water does not come out like it used to, I don't have the output to reverse the water to flush the motor. when im at half throttle im noticing that the water is fluttering, and steaming out of the pee hole, heeelp.
Thank you for posting, but how hot or warm should the water coming out of the pee hole be?
If its not a outboard motor wth is it.
Put your comments or questions here!
it is 13/16.
whats with the music?
15 min for flushing is excessive (think about the neighbors too) ....I flush mine out for 5 min, have been for years and my engine is in tip top condition
The water in mine comes out all over the place
Tremenda guata weon
Good video but dump the soundtrack
Never, ever rev an outboard that high on muffs. There's no load or backpressure on it, plus you are not pulling anywhere near enough water for higher RPM's. If you starts to stall out after starting just bump the key in for a second it'll correct itself.

Old comment but. I’m running a Johnson 90, 1987 model. And as such call BS on your comment…. periodically I have done some pretty high RPMs on ear muffs. Did lots when fault finding various issues over the years. To clear out an ants nest and get the pump flowing fully, when I had ignition issues. And when I had a faulty thermostat that worked fine when cruising but over heated at idle…. (I’ve replaced the pump several times due to preventative maintenance … and it’s always been fine). What do you think happens when your outboard sucks air over waves at 5000rpm. Calm down. It’s just a dumb water pump feeding pressure to thermostats (that are sprung bypass at high Rpm anyway). As long as it’s wet, it won’t melt.
As far as Reving a 2 stroke with no load….. weed walkers do this all day long, as do dirt bikes. It will be fine. Engines don’t explode from reving with no load.
I would not recommend that. It's more of a flush than a cleaning.

Totally wrong! Impeller needs water all times. If engine runs
