      I always thought the series took place in a medieval time period, with hints and points of technology because of higher world intellect and magic.
      Then again I never played anything from the franchise other than 3 (or whatever it is), so what do I know?

    The reason cure is his weakness is that it *over* heals him. Get this, though: Phoebe's cure actually does outright heal him, because it does so much damage it overflows *twice* and goes from heal to damage to healing again. In theory if Phoebe were weaker she'd hurt him with it too. This game...this game was a thing.

    • @WillieManga
      @WillieManga Před 4 lety +56

      Huh? I thought it was because the Dark King was, like, undead, or something. I mean, I don't remember the Dark King saying he was a zombie, but it would have made sense. The holy magic from cure would damage the undead, so I would accept it if he said something like "it took ages for this moment to come, but even in death, I have lived to see it!" But no. I checked, and this was indeed a glitch. And Benjamin (the hero) is capable of this too. As if this game wasn't already easy enough!

By the time FF1 released in the US Japan was already on 2. By the time they got around to starting localization of a new FF Japan was on 4, so they decided to localize 4 and simply call it 2. By the time they got to FF7 Square had switched to Sony consoles. Square decided to stop renaming the games for international release at the same time.

      FWIW, FFA is AMAZING; and establishes a LOT of the now-typical JRPG cliches. Which are so, for a reason. Because the game behind it is surprisingly solid, and a lot of them attempt the same level of richness (YMMV) by *simply* copycatting the plot. It also established stuff (spin attacks, tapping walls to see if they're destructible, using tools/weapons certain ways for navigation) that later became staples in Zelda games, like LttP and Link's Awakening.
      I DO recommend checking that one out.

      Tony TheTGR Wtf you talking about?,using tools/weapons to check walls for extra-ways ect,and spin attack and so on,was all established in
      "The legend of Zelda" for NES,wich came out "1986" and Mystic qest came out "1992" on the NEXT console GENERATION,so obviously Zelda came first,and established all those things wich is actually commen-knowledge if to everyone who lived thourgh that timeline up until now and every reporter ever admins that ZELDA did it all first not final fantasy infact the "first" final fantsay game came out 1year AFTER Zelda was released,so if the mechanics are similar,or remind you of Zelda than it certaintly is so,because FF copyed the mechanics from Zelda not the other way around.
      edit: also even Links awakening was released 1 YEAR before Mystic qest came out,again if anything theiy copyed shit from awekening not the other way around,also "a Link to the past" ALSO came out 1year and 6months before Mystic qest came out in the USA,and even 2years before its Japan release, so yea Pretty much confirmed: YOU KNOW NOTHING and you been wrong on all these statements,Mystic qest did not lay the ground work for those games,ZELDA did,and not Zelda stole from Mystic qest,but Mystic qest stole from ZELDA. next time you write a comment research shit before you talk.

      +Christian Beier It wasn't. The Super Nintendo version is actually Secret of Mana 2, while the real Secret of Mana (called Mystic Quest outside of japan) on the gameboy was the first game of the series.
      Secret of Evermore was an unrelated game using a similar style, while the Final Fantasy Legends 1 through 3 for GB were actual Secret of Mana spin off games, but using a different style and not directly related to the main-plot and only occasionally referencing events.

      But that still doesn't explain how Kaeli is a higher level. I kinda get it in terms of gameplay, so that you don't need to grind, but on a story level, it's absurd as hell. It's possible that when Projared says that he avoided enemies, it means he didn't grind because there was no incentive to. If he still ended up killing some of the enemies, he should at least be on a similar level to his ally.

      @Ranylyn Před 3 lety +1

      Serious answer: It's actually got nothing to do with the number of enemies you fight and EVERYTHING to do with the game balance.
      Ally characters *don't level up from battle.* This means that, when they join you, they join at the recommended target level for the time they *leave,* in order to keep them relevant and helpful the entire time you have them. This means that they're INTENDED to be a higher level than you when they join by *design.* Here's a point form list:
      - Kaeli joins at the start of the game at level 3, while you're level 1. If you fight every enemy in the Level Forest, you're still level 2 by the time she leaves. You actively need to leave the area to respawn enemies to GRIND to catch up with her before she leaves.
      - Tristam joins immediately afterwards at level 7, because he's going to be along for the entire bone dungeon. The bone dungeon gives decent experience compared to the Level Forest, so even avoiding avoidable fights gets you reasonably caught up to Tristam.
      - Shortly afterwards, Phoebe joins at Level 15. This is because you're going to have her for three zones, two of which are multilevel dungeons like the Bone Dungeon was. She probably would have only been 11-12 if you only had her for the Cave and not the Pyramid.
      - Next up, Reuben joins at 23, and you have him for a similar period of time as Phoebe. Again, you really don't get to do a bunch of solo combat between Phoebe and Reuben.
      - Tristam joins at around Reuben's level since he's a filler ally you barely have for half a zone.
      - Kaeli jumps up to 30 because you're going to have her for the longest stretch of the game. She also joins with a Giant's Axe, which you don't have until a ways into this segment.
      - Reuben joins again at like 32 or 34 or something for a single zone you're likely to gain a few levels in.
      - Phoebe joins at 36 for the endgame (The hard level cap you can reach if you grind is like 41-42, IIRC?)
      You get the idea. When I was younger I used to experiment with how much grind it would take to be on par with an ally when they join, and it made the game take, no joke, something silly like 10x longer to get through, since lower level enemies give less experience and all that. Grinding to 7 in the level forest before losing Kaeli because Tristam is coming up alone took somewhere in the vein of 45 minutes of leaving the map to reset the enemies to fight them again. The player was never intended to be on par with the allies until the end of their segment on the team, and even then, a few of them may have been slightly too high.
      Hope this clears it up!

    So the whole "partner is always stronger" thing can be explained by the fact that your partner often stays for an entire region, meaning their initial high level becomes mediocre by the beginning of the 3rd dungeon, this is obviously by design since they didn't want the player to worry about partner levelling up, for example Reuben does need those 1040 hit points to survive the Hydra's fire attacks, and his morning star needs to be that strong to deal proper damage to those bosses
    Though this doesn't always make sense, like Phoebe in the final dungeon being completely stronger than you in everything except maybe melee

      +Carolina Moraes Myself and my 2 brothers played this game when we were young, we have fond memories of it too. We had no idea it was overly easy. We completed it I think in one or two weekends, hiring from the video store. The music has always stayed with us. And I guess we fell for the whole "let's make it easy for those dumb western kids" because we thought it was pretty good. I guess I could tell the graphics were simpler than other stuff (even Super Mario Land, one of the first SNES games) but it somehow had its own charm.

      Yes, but that's located directly _outside_ Hotland, it isn't actually in and/or surrounded by Hotland like, for example, Alphys' lab is; if Alphys' lab had a big, obvious neon sign like hotel in Fireburg does, your comparison would've been somewhat valid, still somewhat weak considering Alphys' lab isn't even a hotel to begin with, but still somewhat valid nonetheless. The MTT resort, on the other hand, exists in it's own separate area; it is not seen connected to any other part of Hotland aside from the entrance, which, once again, exists in it's own separate area in it's own separate screen. It has absolutely no relation or similarity to the one in Fireburg whatsoever; it is not surrounded by lava, not in a village/town, and not even the same type of landscape.

    I was one of the noobs who needed the hand holding. This was my first jrpg ever, got it when I was around 8, and without the streamlined level of gameplay I probably never would have picked up later jrpg games, since I'm not a fan of static, turn-based fighting anyway, and especially since that Ice Golem boss took me forever to beat since I didn't really get the concept of grinding back then. I completely agree with the dialogue critique, but this game was a big help to get me into rpgs in general.

      Lava Dome was awesome - but my favorites might be the Ice Cavern, the Temple theme (used in multiple locales), the mountain theme, Doom Castle and especially the final battle - that was as complex as Zeromas and about comparible to The One Winged Angel. But yes, the Lava Dome is also an all time favorite.
