The way music is purchased has changed as well. With music streaming, you have a giant pool of popular music from any decade, available at a mouse click, at any given time. Of course this will shift the focus from current popular music to the classics. Apart from this, I personally think that current popular music is WAY more inventive and interesting and diverse than it has been 10, 15 years ago, with a lot of "Indie pop" acts breaking in to the Mainstream, such as Sia, Grimes, Marina and the Diamonds, CHVRCHES and many many more.
