Reminds me of that wendigoon quote "remember kids, the next time someone tries telling you 'the government would never do that' oh yes they would"
"I'm from the government, and we're here to help." *proceeds to poison U.S. citizens with LSD without their knowledge and observe the effects*
Think another of my favorite quotes is from miniminuteman âyou donât need to make up an imaginary shadow government to hate, you can just hate the actual governmentâ
Was literally rewatching left right game from creepcast before coming here 𤣠love Wendi!
I would add "and in some cases already have!"

Al's "am I real" discussing with Barry provides a philosophical contrast to Ed's discussion with the Slicer(s). Ed convinces the Slicers that he considers them to be living people, even without bodies, simply because they're still ensouled. And Barry tries to convince Al that his lack of a body means there's a chance he's not even real, that the soul/memory information could be faked. It's a question of what makes a person a person, their physical self vs. their mental self.
Iâve thought about this subject a lot due to all the sci fi and fantasy books and shows I feast upon. My opinion is that body and memory are eternally connected. You canât pull consciousness out of a body nor can you implant consciousness into an artificial body. Even if you could copy your mind and memories into a clone of yourself that knew you would not be you. They would simply be a copy that thinks and acts like you would. When you die you die. You canât move your consciousness to another body.
â@@DaisyAzuras So you're saying Al is in fact not real?
It also immediately refutes Alâs mind-f*ck because Ed specifically cites his brother being exactly what 48/the Slicer bros. are. So while Alâs freaking out, Ed is showing his mistake in a wonderful bit of dramatic irony.
But that doesnât devalue the trauma of it allâŚ
â@@tinystegosaurus587 no, it's meant to raise a thought. A philosophical and existential question for you to ponder over. What makes us "real" and what makes you "you". A rhetoric quandary.
Dam! 2 FMAB reactions in 1 week. How did we get so lucky? đđđ
Urge to binge already rising! đ
@@johndb1860 it is very bingeable, especially once all the cliffhangers start hitting and the plot starts hammering hard.
You do have to remember, Al is still basically a child. Itâs not out of the question that Barry would get under his armor. Also, I LOVE Barry. Heâs one of my favorites in this show.
One of the cool twists in the manga too is that up until this point we've never actually seen Al's body, since the whole 'First Day' flashback doesn't happen until a bit later. So even for the reader there might be that moment of doubt, which makes it a cool little mystery. I don't think that would have translated well so I do prefer this version where we've seen them as kids, but its still a neat idea.
Barry gay
@@alexandermendoza9603 ok? And?
Also, even a grown man can have existential crisis for that. I mean, Barry was speaking some valid points, how can you be so sure you're "real", if you are in Al's situation?
That was my thought as well, even an adult might second guess themselves in that situationâ@@soulscyther666
Barry screaming and saying "WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR BODY!?" kills me every time.
Uno reverse cardđ
Side note, i absolutely adore how they show Hughes as this smart competent man that absolutely prioritizes his wife and daughter over everything. I feel like its rare shows/anime show the "goofy" loving father and I think it's a great lesson for younger people watching!

@@emkalina Good example đbut i dont think there are many more

Barry the Chopper is such a fun character! Insane, evil, murderous? Oh definitely, but he's also kind of hilarious.
Introducing friends to anime and video games you realize there really is a sort of "literacy" barrier. Like how gamers automatically know a red barrel will explode. Some anime newbies are confused by what the anime eyes mean.
Al earnestly apolgising and trying to explain that he's from a small town when someone brags that they are a FAMOUS SERIAL KILLER is still one of the funniest things in the series
Me explaining to influencers I meet that I only get anime notifications in a nutshell
For Alphonse Elric, politeness isnât a social nicety ingrained by socialisation; itâs an inherent core value of his very being.
Unless youâve crossed an inherent moral line, as Shou Tucker for instance did; then youâre dead meat.
âMajor Armstrong is gonna kill us!â is basic.
âMajor Armstrong is gonna take his shirt off again and yell at us some more!â is smart. Itâs possible. Itâs terrifying.
Barry the Chopper is a lot of fun for a serial killer.
He's a real cut up.
I interpret that vision of Scar that Ed had during his battle with Slicer more of him recalling a combat situation that he was recently in to determine how to react.
You are completely correct. Its more clearly displayed in the 2004 series. Basically the guy was attacking so fast that Ed couldn't do a complete transmutation. He even tried making a spear, but the guy slashed the spear head off before it even fully left the ground. So with Ed getting backed into a corner he was desperately trying to come up with a strategy. That was when he remembers Scar and Ed realizes if he doesn't have time to complete the 3 steps of transmuting, then why not just stop at 2, Deconstruction?
We've actually already met Mustang's team, back in episode 4. The five soldiers directly beneath him. They've all had one-off lines at this point, though Hawkeye is obviously the only one to get any actual focus so far.
Not sure if anyone here has brought up the irony behind Mustang's name. Mustang is slang for a commissioned officer who rose from the enlisted ranks. It's origins date back to when officers were normally born from nobility. In essence a mustang is a feral horse which has the same attributes as a thoroughbred.
Arenât a lot of the officers like Mustang, Hughes, and Armstrong named after WWI/WWII military vehicles or something? But yes⌠two can be true at the same time.
@@borjankosarac3645 True. Some names have multiple inspirations. Armstrong's name also has ties to Louis Armstrong, a famous jazz trumpeter. Mustangs name is not only the name of a plane, but also his rise in ranks from an enlisted soldier. Roy is old French for "King," implying his ambition and aspirations.
Barry the chopper had his own episode (as a human) in FMA 2003 and it was super creepy. In Brotherhood he's a comedic character.
The episode that reminds you Al is just a 13 y/o kid. Yeah what Barry's saying is clearly nuts, but to a child who's gone through something that traumatic who doesn't even remember it properly, anything's possible right? It's easy to look down on him for his naivety but he deserves pity more than anything.
Barry implied Edward could've placed those memories in Al's mind, too. Reminds me of Blade Runner, where the company was placing memories in replicants.
Tiny nitpick... Al is probably 14 during the events of this episode/arc.
I totally agree with your point, though. Barry's clearly insane and trying to mess with Al, but Al's a traumatized kid who's having his trauma poked at with a sharp stick. Or, I guess a butcher's knife would be more apropos.
I'm not sure it's "nuts". How do you transmute a non-physical soul to bond it to an object? With Ed being the anti-religious scientific alchemist, I'm surprised he believes in souls in the first place. About half of all scientists today don't and most of the neuroscientists I have read don't (and believe that the mind is just an emergent property of the physical brain...so if the brain is destroyed then there is nothing left of the mind - or what we call the "soul"). On the other hand, making a kind of alchemy-version of a "robot" out of a suit of armor that thinks it's Ed's dead brother (or a fictional brother who never existed)? Than seems at least no more and no less crazy than believing Al is a real boy's actual God-created soul bonded to armor.
@@WhatKindOfNameNow Al isn't aging. The biology of his brain is not maturing. He is the same age he was 2 years ago.
@@emkalina Then he's 12, assuming you're correct (which I don't think you are, but hey, what can you do).
Much of Lust's original dialogue is laced with double-entendres, and I am sad that when Ed's arm fails, they translated her comment as "Technical difficulties?" instead of the more appropriately saucy "Performance issues?"
I mean I see the line as a double entendre all the same.
I feel most adults would understand regardless
Scar did try to kill Al that way, which is how Al ended up with his armour broken up - so Edward knew how that would turn out.
First time through I didn't guess about the guards being like Al but once I knew, looking back it was obvious - well, at least close to obvious.
As smart and capable as Ed and Al are, they are still kids. And those doubts being raised by someone in the exact same situation as Al certainly doesn't help.
Getting to rewatch this show through your reactions just highlights how smartly it is written and how clever you are being able to piece together hints, motives and themes of this show.
Lastly, Hughes is just the best!
In the original FMA anime, there was a whole episode that focussed on Barry the Chopper, but we got the condensed chibi version here. The fuller version did have greater story stakes, but this version serves this story well enough. When I first saw the show I wondered whether Al was real, because it seemed more plausible that Ed created a copy of Al than that a "Soul" could be bound to armor. How do you transmute a non-physical soul? That's like saying you could transmute someone's "love" (say, for his wife) to a physical object.
This episode is where everything in this series starts opening up the story perfectly imo, I cannot wait for you to get into the next couple of episodes!!
Barry the Chopper, after realizing he can't beat Al in a fight: BRAIN GAMES
Reminder that Al is ~14... and he was put in the armor at 10 (he might have been 11, not a lot of exact dates). We don't know for certain how much he is able to mature in this state, I'd say he's maturing 'just fine' mentally... either that or he was immensely mature for a 10 yr old.
Al was falling for what Barry was telling him because he is afterall...still just a kid. Something like14 at this time.
Any character that walks around a lot with a smile and their eyes closed is generally considered a smug villain-like, or at the very least, trickster character, usually one that betrays the team they're on at some point (they are almost snake-like, baring their smile/fangs, while narrowing their eyes in a predatory manner). It's become such a trope in anime, that if one starts on the good side, it's generally considered obvious that character will betray the good team at some point (even if they regret it later, and switch back). These types of characters often have some hidden ability they've never shown anyone, which surprises everyone, and leads to an unfair advantage, which is why they give off such smug vibes.
Right on 2 full metals in 1 week
So, our heroes have finally encountered Lust and Envy for the first time... These early episodes are always fun to rewatch with the benefit of hindsight. It's interesting to think about that would've played out if Ed's arm wasn't missing that screw.
The further you get into the show. The more you wont be able to stop after each episode! đ
Barry and the Slicer bros both got off easy if you ask me. In a way, their crimes were essentially used as a resume for a job they didn't sign up for. Their killer skills could be used. Obviously they're on a short leash, as Lust and Envy made it abundantly clear to the Slicer bros.
The fight with 66 is even more intense in the 03 anime, thanks to the fact that Ed, Al, and Winry had an encounter with Barry the Chopper that led to his arrest.
Barry's reaction to Al being a suit of armor with a human soul bonded to it was funnier than the original series
*Ferally banging fists on the table*
TWO PER WEEK! TWO PER WEEK!
I canât tell if this is a demand or excited
I don't know either, but I am repurposing it as a kind request đ
Did you see Tuesdayâs upload?
@@funnylilgalreacts this is amazing!!!! Love your work. Please keep it up.
The 2003 anime has a great episode involving Barry when he was still alive. He kidnaps Winry and then gets the drop on Ed when he goes to rescue her. It culminates in a genuinely chilling scene in a meat freezer, with Ed suffering from a healthy dose of near-death trauma.
Yay! I love Barry! He's just a simple guy having as much fun as he can. In the warhammer lore, they sometimes create these cyborg servants called servitors from criminals. You get hooked up with a memory wipe(hopefully) and get your body parts exchanged for various tools and such. Bonus is since you are no longer considered human they don't use anesthesia in the procedures and you could be working an assembly line for the next few centuries
Here is were Al the overthinker arc begins.
In the '03 FMA Ed was the one to capture Berry who abducted Winery when he had flesh.
In the original anime back in 2003, the Elric Brothers and I think Winry has a run in with Barry the Chopper back when he was alive.
While here it's pretty clear that Barry was Bonded years, decades, earlier. A much better idea, to do that kind of experiment long before Alphonse ended up in the armor rather than long after it. "Is it possible... oh yeah, right there he is."
Yeah the 03 version rewrites some of their earlier adventures (like the Nina incident) to happen around the same time as Ed becoming a state alchemist (so ~2.5 years earlier) as well as add in some original story adventures such as the aforementioned run in with a still alive Barry. I don't think Barry's been at the lab for more than a year or two at this point (for reasons that will become more clear later), but it's clear they never met in this timeline regardless.
Al may be dumb enough to fall for gaslighting, but he's smart enough to know Barry could be right.
Barry should've been a surgeon. He could've cut up people legally and would never have to go to jail. đ
barry the chopper is one of the goats in FMA xD
Barry is such a character.
Everyone loves Hughes
Barry the Chopper is one of those characters that yeah, they might have murdered MULTIPLE people without remorse but like come on he's hilarious you HAVE to love him
Maes prattles on about his family until they are sure the line is free but that's not to say he isn't obsessed with his family.
is it just me or does 48 sound like Fuhrer Bradley in a suit of armor lmao?
no worries, you will get pool of tears in early stage
Just wanted to say, you've done an amazing job keeping up with the details of the show. It is a lot to take in the first time watching and you even remember everyone's name. Out of all the reactors I've watched (at least the solo reactors) you've understood the most. Amazing reaction content.
I forgot that they skip over the boys' capture of Barry the Chopper in Brotherhood.
Because it doesn't happen in the manga.
You're thinking of the first Fullmetal anime. Still a few more episodes before the storylines of the two completely separate, but there still are some small differences even at this point.
@@ryanakers1372 Oh no, they were sperate from the start. The original series was built around Ed as the main character and Al as his sidekick.
Probably because it isnât canon.
@@Ozgarthefighter Huh, you're right. Score 1 for the '03 anime. That whole section added a lot of weight here.
Thank you for double episodes
I have no idea why but I love Envy so much! XD
Love the glasses. They suit you well. Cheers!
25:27 đ about Anime faces: the emojiâs are an excellent starting point. Always remember that the simple form is the Obvious Expression, and the Subtle Art is the Subtextual Expression. Anime style is Phonetic like a pictograph.
BUT! Envy is like an inverted tarot card. Their expression is a Con, especially in the Chibi/Cartoon form. Theyâre taking advantage of assumed human weakness.
Just to comment on why al had always beat ed in sparring. Al has height/reach, endless stamina, ed has a young still growing body, and ed probably doesn't use alchemy during the spars
Nice! More FMA so soon.
Out of curiosity, have you ever watched : "The last unicorn?"
If not I would add it to the watch list.
As well as Prince of egypt if you dont know that masterpiece. ;)
I know it's early to begin recommending other anime to react to, but I highly suggest putting Death Note on the list once we all finish FMA:B!
It's a great one to react to, especially for people who are newer to anime, and it's 37 episodes so wouldn't take a year to get through LMAO.
It is not a very happy anime, but as anime tends to do it has a good number of fun moments.
Love your feral shirt đť
I love your glasses, girl. Are those prescription or blue screen glasses? And where can I get them???
Transmute!
The word is "Trans-mute", not "Trans-mutate"
You're adding an extra syllable
Transmutate is a character from Beast Wars though :/
If you can handle some dodgey early-2000's 3D animation, maybe you should watch that next? XD
Oh, yeah! It's Barry time!
In Japanese culture, if a character has narrow eyes, they tend to be nefarious or not to be trusted. It's a visual queue to be wary of that character. It's good to know if you start getting into more anime.
It's easy to forget they're both kids and Al is particularly naĂŻve compared to Ed, so it's not surprising Al's susceptible to suggestion
I admit to having SUCH a soft spot for Barry. Like... horrible horrible human. But weirdly cute. Kinda like how you feel about Gluttony.
Barry the Chopper â¤
Hughes is literally the best of the best.
Hey, a second vid this week! Are we just spoiled or is this gonna be a regular thing? ^.^
While the Slicers were serial killers, I always felt a bit sad about how they went out; older bro just said they had lived lives never being treated as people, having to lie and steal and murder to survive, to the point he seems unbothered by being bound to a hunk of metal and like itâs just the natural progression of their lives. Then he meets someone who sees him and his little bro as people whose lives DID have value, and out of graciousness offers to tell him everything he knows⌠Only for Lust to impale his blood seal and ruthlessly extinguish his soul. And little bro screams out in agonised grief for big bro, just for Envy to even MORE sadistically destroy him too. :-(
Youâre invited to really engage with morality by this story, which is why we get just enough from these guys to highlight the themes; while the Slicers werenât good people and their loss isnât a loss to society, a combination of how they might have ended up there (especially compared to Barry who was merely bored) and the fact our hero still sees them as human while our antagonists snuff them out like candles⌠Itâs really important to not dismiss these out of hand. Which Iâm not saying you are, Angela; youâre a very empathetic and thoughtful tractor as always. ;-)
My ex and I named our daughter Elicia after Elicia from Fullmetal Alchemist, but we call her Ellie as a nod to Ellie from The Last Of Us. It's ironic, because my ex-wife is a monster akin to the antagonists in both of those fictional works đ
The smiling w eyes closed is just sort of an exaggeration of how your eyes scrunch up when smiling. Its just an anime thing. I think you clocked roys character very well! And i think Alphonse has just been stuck in an unfeeling body for so long his mental fortitude regarding his body is just so weak.
You are kinda on the right track, Al is just a kid, he is more susceptible to manipulation, there is many slopes in im this show
In the 2003 anime, we saw Barry the Chopper before he was just a suit of armor. And we knew his prey.
And the stuff with the Slicer hit much harder.
You look very cute in those glasses đđđ
If you can find a free version of Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within movie. I have only found it to buy or rent on CZcams,itâs totally worth it if you can find it somewhere. Itâs a one hour and forty five minutes long movie.
"Why are you falling for this?" Oh I dont know Hes 12.
14*
Aww man i forgot how sad the show can get...i still remember watching the first version of the show on adult swim that one looked more hand drawn still and the colors were a bit darker and there were a little less goofy moments...but its still đ đ
You are absolutely beautiful and I love your sense of self and your humor. I am a new sub and just moved to Vegas. How long have you lived here?
That Bazza, he's a loose unit I reckon.
Couldn't beat Al at the physical game, and switched to psychological warfare.

You really should check out this movie before you finish this series Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos
My assumption was that he was going to tell Al that he had to sacrifice his own arm and leg in order to give Al a body for his soul to attach to⌠Even though I've watched the entire series before, I honestly don't remember if my thoughts or yours is the correct line of thinking
Al already knows that he had to sacrifice his arm. And the leg was the toll for opening the portal. They go over what Ed was going to say in the next episode
SPOILER?
If I remember right, he ends up telling Al that what he wanted to say was that he wonders if Al blames him for what happened or not? Or Winry tells Al that this is what eats at Ed, and Ed himself leaves it unsaid? We'll find out next episode I guess, ha.
Iâm not sure Iâm ready for whatâs to come.
Can you react to sidemen inside please its REALLY good

Non spoilers*** this may be an unpopular opinion but I really wish you watched the original full metal alchemist. It went into Ed and Al's origins more in depth. Character development was deeper for heroes and the villains. FMA brotherhood is like the McDonalds of fine Dining. It felt very rushed.
Big Papa pumping Trisha full of Daddy Juice is not a spell nor alchemy lol. I hope I made this as gross sounding as possible
If you don't have the knowledge, then you have no idea what to do in the first place.
SPOILLER, I guess. It isn't really spoiller, but maybe I just have the opinion below because I have more information. I don't mention anything that haven't allready been mentioned tho
Urgh, it's so frustating that you're ok with the mass murd* to die but not with the soldiers that Scar kills, as if they were any diferent, as if they didn't work to exterminate a hole ethnicity, and even refearing to they being in the trial of death as something understandable, cus they did what they did. Man, live in a country where this type of thing happens must be ... something.
Also, I like your disgust for the "fĂźhrer" thing, I'm exited for the future videosđ

Al is like 8 so him faling for it is quite realistic.
Please react to bojack horseman đ
You shouldn't have skipped FMA 2003.
that is one of the weirdest sentences I've ever read
Thatâs not what skipping is?
So Fullmetal Alchemist (original) has a couple short plots that Brotherhood chose to skip entirely. Barry the Chopper was Ed's first big arrest as a State Alchemist. Barry made the mistake of going for Winry when she visited
That's not canon to the manga. It's an original to 03. It wouldn't make sense considering what comes after for the boys to turn be chill w barry
That was just a 2003 anime thing. This is how it was in the manga as well.
Thatâs not canon, itâs filler created for the initial adaptation.
Al giving any weight to what Barry says is my least favorite plot point of the whole show, I think, might remember something more annoying at another time but right now I think it is.
It makes sense though, 03's version however is definitely bad
Fun fact: this Barry the Chopper (66) character. He actually had a whole episode about him and how he kidnapped Winry when she came to Central to visit the boys. Until of course they saved her and Barry got captured.
idk if angelas going to watch the 2003 fma so idk if we should be posting spoiler comments like this just in case
Donât pay attention to the opening credits. Nothing in them in any Japanese anime. The sequences never reveal the plot.
