    Fun Fact: You mentioned the real life alchemist from Harry Potter, Nicolas Flamel, and the cross that you see on Ed's coat and Al's armor is called the Flamel Cross, named after him.

  • @VegetaLF7

    One of the things I love about this show is that it doesn't focus on how strong or powerful characters are but rather their intelligence. The characters are constantly researching and examining notes, piecing clues together. Yeah, there's a physicality to the job, being able to fight is a must since it is a military position, but the character's intelligence is as important as their muscles, if not more. Brains win the day over brawn

    • @borjankosarac3645
      @borjankosarac3645 Před měsícem

      On that, one thing I love about Arakawa is she knows how to write characters who are WELL above her intelligence level. Which is probably fairly high in itself, but the Elrics are freaking child prodigies; it’s not a diss to say she’s not as smart as them, and yet makes her intelligent characters actually feel well above her.
      I’ve seen the after effects of writers who can’t write high-intelligence characters, especially villains, and have to dumb down other characters just in comparison. So I’m extra grateful for her now…

    Something to remember, Amestris, the country FMAB takes place in is a highly centralized militaristic country. The majority of government personal are either military or work on projects for the military. If you notice anyone wearing one of those blue uniforms they are either soldiers or work for the military in a support role. Those wearing the black version are the Military Police.
    As for the State Alchemists they are also part of the military but in a more specialized role either working as researchers(ie. Dr Marco, Tucker) or combat specialists(ie. Armstrong, Mustang).
    Their dress code is "flexible".

    This episode is a really good showcase of why Ed and Al are bit different from the typical Shonen hero: While tehy are good at fighting and Alchemy, they are also ridiculusly studied. To do Lachemy, you actually have to understand what you are transforming on an anatomical level, which means these two have been slaving over books for _years_ to be this good. It's also why most Alchemists are specialised (Freezing with Water, Roy with Fire, Armstrong with Stone, same as Ed and Al) because trying to be super broad in your apprach means you ahve to study so much more.

      All State Alchemists get a research grant, which is how Shou Tucker was able to afford his manse (and he wonders why his research bore little results…) They get assessed each year, and two strokes in a row can see their license and everything that comes with it revoked.
      Because Ed and Al are basically nomads, staying in hotels or just sleeping on trains, the only money they generally need to spend are the essentials; and Al doesn’t eat, so Ed only buys what is needed.
      Well, he does need to pay Winry for repairs whenever his carelessness gets him busted up, but that’s barely a dent in the wallet.

    Something important to keep in mind with the "hidden eyes" trope is that, while it is used to convey that a character is hiding something, it does not necessarily mean that they are hiding that information with the intention of doing bad things. Sometimes it's just a bit of artistic flair to fit the line or the scene, or sometimes it could mean someone is thinking about something rather deeply.
    Not to say don't be suspicious, definitely be suspicious of anyone and everyone! It makes things more interesting! But not everyone with eyes you can't see is antagonistic. FMA does a lot of really good work with its symbolisms and subtleties, and the way it plays with eyes with the symbolism is also incredible.

    30:17 Al's armor is actually weaker than before the repair. Like Ed said, since Scar *destroyed* about a quarter of the mass of Al's body, he had to thin everything out to get enough material to restore Al's shape while retaining the new, lesser mass.
    Why he can't add more iron to the transmutation to fix Al without thinning the original material or reducing his size instead isn't ever directly addressed, I don't believe.

    Something I like about Fullmetal Alchemist is how these things are set up from the outset.
    You know the opening narration that explains alchemy and the law of equivalent exchange.
    "In accordance with this law there is a taboo among alchemists, human transmutation is strictly forbidden for what could equal the value of a human soul."
    See a reasonable person hears that and thinks: "I surely should not try to create a human with alchemy because, if I can't sacrifice something worth an entire human soul then I'll suffer a pretty nasty rebound and maybe die."
    But a sick psychopath thinks: "hmmm... I could get my hands on some human souls... wonder what I could get by sacrificing them..."
    Always remember that the transmutation can be turned around the other way. Anything may be either the product or an ingredient.

    I dont know how well versed you are in anime, but the glasses going pure white is just an anime-ism. It does not always mean that someone is untrustworthy or lying and shouldn't be used as a metric to guage that. Oftentimes it's simply used as a stylistic flair to affect the tone of what someone says.

    So you've probably heard how this show is a partial telling of the original show before it split off into it's own thing. That's because the original show caught up to where the manga was and instead of making a bunch of filler to buy time for the manga to pull ahead again, they got permission to make their own story while Brotherhood was intended to tell the "actual" story. This episode marks the point where we continue with the real story and where the original show split off. The breakneck pace the plot has had up until now is slowing down since they wanted to catch back up to this point. Everything up to now has functionally been a recap for the people who watched the original

    • @Vael221
      @Vael221 Před měsícem +1

      Incorrect. FMA03 was it's own thing right from the beginning, they knew the IP was good but the story was far from finished so they wrote their own story using this as the basis. Brotherhood is much closer to the manga and got made once the manga was all but finished. The "breakneck pacing" of the early episodes has nothing to do which catching up, it's just that the early stories of the manga are short.

    • @VegetaLF7
      @VegetaLF7 Před měsícem +1

      @@Vael221 Very much negative. It was an adaptation of the manga and they quickly ran out of material to translate. The series creator gave them permission to do their own story rather than wait for her with the only real directive being reach a different end point than what she was going for since she didn't want the same story released twice. Brotherhood is the more faithful telling of the story and the first several episodes recaps the most important plot points needed to go forward. Everything up to the 5th Lab *is* an extended recap of the major storylines from the first 30 or so episodes of the original show, the point that the original show split off from the "correct" timeline of the manga. They didn't go into it knowing they'd deviate so wildly, that was a choice made during production. The speedy returning to the 5th lab was an attempt at getting back to the divergence point.

Either way doesn't much matter. It's the same content and was localized in English in 2003, if I'm not mistaken. You'll love it.
