Regarding the Pizza Thing, I think the term "cheese pizza" comes from the fact that you're asking for a pizza specifically to experience the cheese. Like, mozzarella is not a very strong cheese, so most toppings will put it in the background. Like, even the tomato sauce is pretty strong in comparison. So the people who say, "cheese pizza" are basically saying "I want a pizza specifically for the cheese, not for any other bullshit." The reason they don't say a "sauce pizza" or a "dough pizza" is probably because other foods are better for those things, whereas pizza is the optimal delivery mechanism for that burnished, bubbly, brown goodness.

As someone who worked in a pizza restaurant during high school, if someone ever ordered a “plain” pizza we would have to confirm with them if they meant they wanted cheese on it or if it was just sauce. At least at our store a base “plain” pizza was bread and sauce, and people absolutely did order that from time to time.

Pat, I understand calling it "Plain Pizza", but I have never heard anyone call it plain before, only cheese. Because technically cheese is a topping on a pizza, and so the phrase "Cheese Pizza" refers to the topping of cheese and nothing else, in all other cases the cheese is simply implied. Also, typically cheese pizza has a bit extra cheese on it to help people be satisfied on it
You know, when you say "plain pizza" I think of just a pre cooked dough. I think of it in terms of you wanna make your own pizza but you don't wanna make your own dough. If you make a breakfast pizza, you take a plain pizza and add your eggs and cheese and what not.
But in terms of ordering, you've convinced me that if someone says "I'd like to order a plain pizza" of course its gonna have sauce and cheese. I usually call it a plain cheese pizza so maybe I'm the weirdo.
as someone who works in a pizzeria on the east coast, 99% of customers say “cheese pizza” when they want a pizza with just sauce and cheese. i concur that cheese pizza is redundant and i personally say plain pizza, but everyone who makes pizzas just understands that both phrases will mean the same thing.

To end the pizza debate once and for all, an Italian is required, and here I am. I will cut the story short, the original pizza is called "Margherita" and here it is considered what you call a plain pizza. The Margherita has 3 ingredients over the pizza, being tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and a couple of basil leaves. The 3 ingredients represent the 3 colours of the italian flag, being green white and red.
Here, if you want a plain pizza without the sauce, you have to say "Margherita without the sauce", same goes for the opposite if you don't want the cheese. Basil is mostly optional, you see it only rarely nowadays.

i said it in chat and i'll say it again, there are kinds of pizza without cheese and kinds of pizza without sauce, the definition of a pizza like a sandwich or burger is not necessarily the ingredients in of themselves but of the arrangement and method of producing.
linguistically "plain pizza > cheese pizza" doesn't have a leg to stand on either. i 100% agree that saying "a plain cheese pizza" is redundant and unnecessary, for the most part they are interchangeable and that works just fine. however the advantage of saying cheese pizza over plain pizza is that what constitutes a "plain" pizza, a normal, base, unmodified pizza is up to interpretation and may not be what you want, fucker could hand you flattened pizza dough with diarrhea sauce and whip cream and say it's a plain pizza and while you shit your pants complaining the motherfucker will sit there and say that's the pizza he grew up with and is what a plain pizza is, while cheese pizza is an apt description of the exact kind of pizza you want with the only way to fuck it up is using a different kind of cheese or something, no room for diarrhea sauce and whip cream or misinterpretations
moreover, if that is the "base form of pizza", then why are you ordering "plain pizza"? shouldn't you just order "pizza"? if pizza is pizza and uttering its name conjures that form of pizza then specifying that it's "plain" pizza is as redundant as specifying you want the pizza with cheese, yes?
