Throughout the years, I have seen every person on that stage, some of them actually together, but to see ALL of them together doing a Buddy Holly cover, blows my mind. This is awesome, I love seeing Joe Ely Live, so this is extra sweet with all the other legends!!
It's not just what Bonnie plays but the bad-assness with how she delivers it. It's like
"Move over fellas, coming through, I;m taking the first one".
So great to see Lloyd Maines killing it on the pedal steel, doing this song again with Joe Ely and David Grissom nearly 40 years after I first saw them do it.
All they needed was Ponty Bone up there adding some accordion. Or Jesse 'Guitar' showing them how a solo is really done. Once saw them almost tear the roof off Fitzgerald's when they did a show with The Blasters.
Maines killed it didn't he? So rhythmically solid, every note placed right where he aimed it.

Seeing Joe Ely and Lloyd Maines on the stage together takes me back to the 70's at FAT DAWGS in LUBBOCK. What a time!!
@johnkimbley I've never been to Lubbock, but love Don Henley's lyrics "I was flying back from Lubbock, I saw Elvis on the plane, or maybe it was Jesus, they both kind of look the same".
I finally went to the Buddy Holly crash site in Clear Lake, Iowa while traveling cross country a couple of weeks ago, if you are a fan you owe it to yourself to go there, it's a beautiful solemn memorial made by fans that has been maintained by the farmer that owns the land.

That sounds right but i'd like to get ACL to verify this. I'd heard for years it was Leonard Cohen or a bizarre taping of Tom Waits from waaaaaay back in the day. But no surprise if its SRV.

My further research provides likely possibilities below as all were in attendance at that anniversary show.
Guy in far back with glasses (on the right side) playing a white guitar is Glenn Fukunaga.
The drummer is Tom Van Schaik who played for the Dixie Chicks and more recently with Robert Earl Keen.
There’s also a pianist on the right side I can only catch a couple of glimpses of. That’s Riley Osbourn .
Most of the brass quartet are likely from Grupo Fantasma.
The marimba player is John Speice IV from Grupo Fantasma.
Possibly sax is Doug James. But most likely Joshua Levy of Grupo Fantasma.
Possibly the trombonist is Mike Rinta. Or Leo Gauna of the Hubtones and Grupo Fantasma. But most likely Mark ‘Speedy’ Gonzalez of Grupo Fantasma.
The heavy trumpet player is Gilbert Elorreaga of Grupo Fantasma. The Black trumpet player on the far left might be Ephraim Owens.

That's a standard New Orleans beat and not an invention of Bo Diddley. As for the general public popularity of the pattern you have to go back to Johnny Otis's Hand Jive in the mid-fifties.
Ms. Raitt is the consummate performer. She just sits there and enjoys others in the band then steps up and delivers a guitar virtuoso fades back and lets these lessers do their thing. Listen to her and only her do this song.

That's Lloyd Maines on the steel guitar and he's on Joe Ely's early albums and they are great. Worth checking out. The album "Live Shots" has some blistering rock pedal steel on it.

Joe Ely.......always loved this guy, great singer song writer and performer. Extremely overlooked and under rated.
Saw him at the NEC in UK supporting robert Cray. I had already got Musta notta gotta lotta album but was the only one who had heard of him. Still brilliant.
I don't really know why, but I've got a thing for Sheryl Crow. She sings beautifully, plays the guitar with passion, and can play the squeeze box. She's beautiful too. The reason doesn't really matter. She's great.
I've always told my wife that we're forever EXCEPT if Sheryl Crow calls!

Brings to mind one afternoon in November 1964 Joe Ely rode a Triumph motorcycle (without a muffler) through the halls
of Monterey High School In Lubbock. I was sitting in class on the second floor of the annex building and the noise was still
deafening. Good times long gone.

That rings a bell with me. My brother did the same on his BSA Lightening in my high school ( with mufflers but epic sound ) .... in North Miami High ... circa 1966 during classes. He had three index cards of offenses with he dean .. front and back .... a most unconventional lad.
As the Sgt. Pepper's album reminded us " And a good time was had by all ".
I remember back then, our (rock) band was playing in the HS auditorium, I was walking down the hallway - in another world - smoking .... and didn't get busted !

Having a complete Buddy Holly collection on vinyl (45s, EPs, LPs) I am still amazed how many stars are covering his songs - and making them even greater.
The song really rocks and a great tribute from great musicians to the genius that was Buddy Holly.

Bonnie's solos get better, tastier as she gets sexier the older she gets. In all my 66 years, she is the hottest, badass chic EVER. I can't take my eyes off her. She looks calmly, confidently at the camera as if to say " eat your heart out, you stupid SOB". Amazing. I just love her. Who said women don't have stage presence. She rules.
