- “When The Levee Breaks” is a powerful, thought-provoking and emotionally-charged classic by Led Zeppelin, from their Led Zeppelin IV album. The song is a rework of the 1929 original release by Kansas Joe Mccoy and Memphis Minnie about the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927; the most destructive river flooding in U.S. history.
“It seems that little has changed since 1927, or even 2005 with Katrina. It’s still a really powerful track, both musically and lyrically.”- John Paul Jones
Legendary multi-instrumentalist, John Paul Jones, is accompanied by Stephen Perkins of Jane's Addiction, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks and over 20 musicians and dancers from seven different countries, in this Song Around The World version featured in Peace Through Music: A Global Event for the Environment.
Feel the impact of these compelling lyrics and let the music move your spirit!
"When The Levee Breaks" was written by John Bonham, John Paul Jones, Kansas Joe Mccoy, Memphis Minnie, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant

The more I hear this track, the less I can resist commenting. I mean, J. P. J., what can one say.? Genius, Maestro.? All the players are magnificent, - - standouts, - - Buffalo Nichols, Tedeschi / Trucks, Sebastian Robertson, Stephen Perkins, the maniac on drums, - - perfect.!! Which brings me to the beautiful Mihirangi, one of our very own Wahine Toa ( Google it.). As a Kiwi, I was already familiar with her work, but this piece just took my breath away.!! He would also leave the hotel alone to explore the city. JPJ is a pretty chill guy.

I think that was sarcasm.

@kskssxoxskskss2189 this dude is truly one of a kind.
NO. The backbone of the band was Bonzo, and everyone agreed on that. That's why the band broke up after his death.
@@thorfornad though this is an exceptionally nice rendition of a masterpiece, it's just 'different' without Bonzo. He was, indeed, the backbone of Led Zep.
I've read at least 1 million youtube comments about "underrated" bands, singers, musicians, etc. But there simply is no human being more underrated than John Paul Jones.
He played: Bass guitar, guitar, recorder, koto, lap steel guitar, autoharp, ukulele, clavinet, sitar, keyboards, keytar, mandolin, cello, harp, chitarrone, lirone, viola da gamba and percussion
He sang vocals in the greatest rock band in history. He's a composer, and has been in 9 movies/vid's. He has been an active musician for almost 60 YEARS.
I say again: There simply is no human being more underrated than John Paul Jones. Period.
I would say more, his solo disks more interesting, then uthers Zep,s member s.
Gotta agree even though it's so strange saying that about a member of Zeppelin.

John Paul Jones is one of the greatest bass players and all round rock minds ever. He never gets enough credit. His bass parts are the drive, swing, and funk behind countless zep records.
A great classical composer as well. I can't imagine Kashmir without his orchestration.
And as cool af as always
No doubt, without Jones you don't get the Zep sound.
This is a kick-ass version that surpasses my favorite, the original by Kansas City Joe and Memphis Minnie and even the Zeppelin remake. John played bass in the Shadows, but beginning in 1964, he began studio work for Decca and found himself arranging and conducting session work for various English artists and bands we all are familiar with. Took up piano at 6 taught by his father, who was an arranger for a big band, apparently this early mixture of music served him well when joining Led Zeppelin. I know everyone heaps praise on Jimmy Page and rightfully so, but Jimmy wouldn't have had the success or longevity (he was also an in demand session guitarist) as anyone who has ever played in a band, knows it takes every musician to make the band. John's contributions to Zeppelin are often overlooked. Great job here, John!
YOUR ABSOLUTELY CORRECT HE NOT ONLY BASS BUT KILLER KEYBOARD AND MANDOLIN. ACUTELY SANG AND SPOKE ON A FEW. Like whers the confounding bridge and talking in the beginning of the ocean ? Mandolin on going to California and the BATTEL FOR EVERMORE
OUTRAGEOUS piece!!!
Every single musician is burning hot, and brought it together in a most beautiful way!
I met John Paul Jones in a bar in Long Beach. He was on holiday with Wife and son, real cool guy. Had a few Heineken's and talked about Rock & Roll.
That is a great story! We're happy to hear more.
One of those encounters you’ll never forget. I worked in the music business for years. Met many a legend. After a while you realize they’re all just mortals like the rest of us. But meeting JPJ? I’d be a nervous wreck, afraid of going fanboy and making an ass of myself.
Dear Penthouse...... My dreams are different than yours .

Must have been a different JPJ as he doesn't have a son...3 daughters lol
John Paul Jones & Stephen Perkins….that’s a beyond solid rhythm section…

Mihirangi…WOW what pipes!!!
Yet again, wishing for the most volume, huge speakers and amp and in a field miles from anyone!!
Blown away. The sonic addition of the Maori lady and the Norwegian singer was just extreme. Takes this song we all know, to a whole different place, and sinks the message in that much more.
JPJ is currently in a band with the Norwegian singer. I"m sure it was him that suggested bringing her in.
JPJ is still a Bass God ... GOAT. And all the other musicians here are too; simply awesome, this. Thank you all.
My first concert was Led Zep, Song Remains the Same movie tour at MSG. Could not hear right for three days, could not talk for two. But one of the best concerts Ive seen, and Ive seen hundreds.
Entwistle is GOAT
There are many GOATS bassists, depending on style. JPJ, Entwistle, Geddy Lee, the late Cliff Burton and many others, my personal fav as a metalhead is Burton. But I love the styles of the others mentioned and call them GOAT too

Memphis Minnie wrote this song, died penniless and unknown, I imagine she is heaven smiling at the thought of so many millions simply enjoying her genius
I'm a big fan of Zeppelin since I'm a teenager, so when I found out this song from their IV album was a remake, felt something strange: how could their best song in the album (with Stairway to Heaven and Black Dog at the same fucking release), perhaps best track from all albums, be kinda a cover... Older, I also found out that in the 9th Beethoven's Symphony, on it's most famous section "Ode an die Freund" is a kinda cover, also - the great Master has made the music over a Schiller's poem. So state that When the Levee breaks is the "Ode an die Freund" from Led Zeppelin is a compliment indeed.

John Paul Jones, Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeshi....How could it not be a great version.🍄🍄🍑
The older I get the more I love led Zeppelin s music!
Hear, hear.
I truly do hope you realize this is not “Led Zeppelin’s music”. They just covered this really great old blues tune - and very well, I might add. One of my favorite covers, but this song was originally recorded in 1929. Google the history. It’s really interesting and I think you will enjoy it! It also, well for me anyway, makes me appreciate and respect the history of Led Zeppelin, too. 😎
@@TheBluesBirdhave you actually listened to the 1929 version? It doesn't sound much like this at all. It doesn't have any of the feeling. It really isn't even 50% the same song. It's about the same as Ozzy's "Shot in the Dark" and Wildlife's. Really, barely the same song. Barely.
That's funny. The older I got the more I realized led zeppelin are hucksters
I've turned on several younger people (I'm 67 in November) to their music. Last year I played LZII, which my grown son (40-something) had never really sat down and listened to. Epic, to say the least. Not many bands in my library are like this; Where you re-listen over the years and continue to hear new "things" in the songs. Undiscovered nuances, and the like. All of the minute details in the playing and engineering are why I let myself be so disappointed when I saw them the only time on stage in 1977 on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. I wasn't mature enough to understand the complexities of such a live performance as theirs and was not prepared in any way to appreciate their stage presence as much as I could have; As much as I should have. They were, however, the ultimate in cool for the day. Long live the music, and long live youthful dreams and visions. Hell, "Long Live Rock".
Another example of the genius of MR John Paul Jones.
Wow Mihirangi! She killed it. What a set of pipes!!!

Thanks to John Paul Jones and all the musicians, and people behind the scenes for making this happen.
How about some love for the poor black lady in New Orleans who wrote it?
Almost all of Led Zeppellins work is American music written by poor black Southerners that they got very wealthy appropriating and exploiting. It’s fantastic music - but people need to understand where it comes from and why it was written. This is a blues song.

Mr. John Paul Jones is the most underappreciated figure in all of music. Few have ever had the level of musical vision that he's been able to achieve throughout his career. And he continues to do so while being content to surround himself with talented people, and take a very low-key and humble role himself. Thank you for this Mr. Jones!
Not underappreciated by Zeppophiles. He is just the Zeppelin George!
I really hate how the word "under-appreciated" is tossed around these days --- JPJ was NEVER under-appreciated by anyone who grew up with Led Zep as the soundtrack to their youth! At 1:06. he's hitting the drums so hard, the head of his drumstick launched to the moon. I'm glad they left that part in. lol.
As it should be. Yeah, I'm glad they did to. And the look he gives it is priceless. 🤣
Great catch, that’s awesome!
They honoring and remembering John Bonham doing things like this
That is why drummers need to wear safety goggles, lol
ps @ 2:36 mark Stephen is back to using regular sticks..
That's happened to me too! The head of the mallets went flying!
Growing up in the 60's and 70's, this song is part of my DNA. To hear it revisited in such a vital, vibrant way gives me goosebumps and I'm not crying, you're crying.
Older people may have said the same thing about Led Zeppelins cover of Kansas Joe McCoy's original from 1929.
@@Fogel70 Agreed, but I know blues purists who scoff at Led Zepp, Pink Floyd, etc. just because they used electric instruments and distortion and took the genre into new sonic/structural arrangements. I love hearing the experimentation (when it works, and I admit that's subjective), but I'm not a big fan of bands that try to reproduce their sound all over again (like Greta Van Fleet). And there are very few modern "pure" blues artists that don't bore me to tears...
Larry = ditto :-)
I can never get enough of this song. It’s just such an incredibly great song everyone in it is fantastic. What a turn on.❤❤❤❤
John Paul Jones is, was and forever will be one of the coolest persons ever.
This is one hard hitting tune. That beautiful indigenous woman’s voice gave me goose bumps.
me too, it truly made it!
Mate she is absolutely magnificent
I'm a 68 year old man and she brought me to tears. Most Playing For Change songs do that to me because of their beauty or joy so I expect it lol.
It was nasty & I winced when I heard it. Did not work at all. This channel is hilarious.
@@MrShadowfax42 trolls are such pathetic creatures. Don't try to goad me into an argument either because you aren't hilarious at all.
I actually got goosebumps when Susan started singing. Just amazing 😊👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Susan Tedeschi, throwing down. Damn.
Derek and Susan are awesome, as is the Norwegian woman and the woman from New Zealand.
Most of Playing For Change's covers are in the "pretty good" to "really good" range, but every once in a while you'll get one that is just mind-blowing. This is one of those. Truly on another level.
Yes they did a good cover, but the real satisfaction is in the original
HIGHEST Level
Man its true but when they nail it they NAIL IT. This was one of them and recently Oye Como Va by Santana. It was better than I expected
@@mjm290853 The Memphis Minnie version? Her guitar playing was incredible, and a credit to Jimmy Page for having the ear to pick up on her genius, and the imagination to re-intepret it
Incredible
I could listen to this a million times, and it wouldn't be enough.
JPJ's bass-line is sneaky and amazing. Phenomenal track.
This is best music video I've ever seen...thanks people🙏
This whole video is mind blowing, but the vocalist from New Zealand was another level
Mihirangi blew my mind!
Yes, she comes from the socialist republic of New Gulag land.
@@davesherry5384 You mean the country that handle the virus better than almost any other?
@@simonedmonds3359 By shutting down their borders and being an island, then yes.
@@jasii6940 And listening to the science and acting on it rather than pandering to those making the noise bleating about how their rights are being infringed.
Oh... my... GOD!!! It's very rarely that I'm so moved by a piece of music any more. 30 seconds in, I was already vibrating at a higher level, but when Mihirangi hit that first note, I completely transcended space-time. By the end, my face was covered with the tears of pure ecstasy. If this doesn't move your soul, you don't have one.
Was it not perfection? Buffalo Nichols had me buzzing with that Delta growl, and then Mihirangi just blew my head right off my shoulders! And then Susan comes in with that haunting, low, smoky voice and I was dead!
wow. so well said. I had the same reaction! tears of joy.
same to me, a music nirvana moment
Word.
Grow up little boy and stop taking our Creator's name in vain!
Number three of God's Ten Commandment says, "You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse His name." Exodus 20:7
That New Zealander gal voice shattered my windscreen. Epic!
@user: those dancer's !! Wow!
One of humanities greatest achievements. Derek Trucks just nailed the solo, and Mihirangi and Susan Tadeschi are just incredible. John Paul Jones makes this version of the song beyond brilliant.
Tedeschi and Trucks (his dad played percussion with the Allman Brothers for many years) often play in Southern California and blow the house down.
,@@tonymiller6847 it was his uncle Butch Trucks. He was one of the original Allman Brothers.
This version was brilliant!
Of course he did, he's Derek Trucks !!!
@@tonymiller6847 They are here now!
If the world would only listen. Thank you for all you do and all the artists that contribute to Playing For Change.
Been a huge Zeppelin fan sine the 70's and all I want to say " great job guy’s and gal’s " keep rocking ⚡️
Needed to hear this again. Feels like all the "LEVEE'S broke, these days......Tee in New Mexico🕊️
Mind blown. This has to be the best version of this tune ever. Just the combo of John Paul Jones and Derek Trucks in the same band? Unreal. This was tremendous! All the musicians here were part of something transcendental. These collabs are proof that music is bigger than us all, but it unites us into something bigger than ourselves. Bravissimo!
Nope, LZ is better but this is a great effort.
@@rjpg Nope, Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy is better, but Zeppelin give it a great effort.
@@da324 Those versions sound almost nothing like Zeppelin's version. Apples and oranges. It's like comparing Jake Holmes's "Dazed and Confused" with Zeppelin's.
what amp is John Paul Jones using?
does anyone know?
@@gummiesrule88 I was just mocking the guy because of his response. Of course the versions sound nothing alike, and contrary to my post; I prefer Zeppelin's.
Do you people know how awesome this video really is?
