Hi all,
Just wanted to say a few things:
First of all, THANK YOU for the support and views on this video.
Secondly, (and perhaps this isn't even worth going into), but I just been seeing a lot of guesses on this effect saying that it's a special app that illuminated the named number behind the cards (perhaps voice recognition?). Just wanted to clarify and say that the phone is legitimately just a light source... although the premise is about 'alien tech', this is actually a very low tech trick, and is done JUST with the cards.
Also, me asking Penn to name his number prior to the reveal was strictly a theatrical decision... method wise, it wasn't necessary, but the punch for the audience would have been diminished if they didn't know Penn's number during the reveal.
Anyway, sorry for the lengthy clarification:) please keep enjoying the video!
Thanks for the clarification Kyle! I enjoyed your performance.
Sorry but nobody believes you
@@fuglbird please feel free to verify my claim :)

I saw the sneaky peak you did while he was writing his number down. The rest was theatrics and knowledge of how to align the dots to create up to 99 different number combinations. Very clever 😉
@@PeerleesCloudh so it was just a peak lol, I knew the moment something happened i just didn't figure out what happened.
I love how Penn and Teller is allowing these to be shown on the magician's channels instead of Penn and Teller's.
This is the worst part because it makes it difficult for fans to find new ones, consistent quality, timely posts, etc. If they were posted officially and unofficially on individual channels, that would be nice.
@@DampRaccoon I agree. That would be nice.
@@DampRaccoon I think some of them have social media to promote so I'm willing to do a little bit of extra work finding them if it helps them promote their channels. The algorithm is doing a decent job of recommending them to me anyway, so I think it's all good. :D
Magician reactions theyve blocked
@@mjsmcd Of course. If we all knew how the tricks were done, goodbye Penn and Teller show lol
Penn comes up with his clues so well. Black holes everywhere!!!
3:51 If 3 was one half of 5, what would 1/3 of 10 be? Since 3 * 2 is 5, then 3*4 is 10, so 1/3 of 10 is 4. Penn got that impressively quickly!
Penn is so smart, i was impressed when he answered 4 within two seconds
There's a fast way to do it. If 3 is half of 5, 6 is half of 10, 12 is 100%, 12/4 = 4.
But if 3 is half of 5, then why would 5 be half of 10?
I just divided normally and rounded up.
Math was always my weakest subject, and so I absolutely _hate_ math with a burning passion. Especially nonsense math questions like this one.
Nicely done, Kyle! We met briefly last year at TRICS. I know it wasn't easy for you to perform under all of that pressure, but man, you made it look relaxed and fantastic!!!
You say you are not known so much as a performer, but I thought your stage presence and the way you performed the trick was really good. You just seem like a genuine and nice person, you had me on your side rooting for you right from the intro.
I love the fact that Kyle performed a trick he invented! I *think* I picked up on how it was done, but the real magic is in the actual performance. Flawless!
i respect those too who invent tricks rather than copying, but it was still based on some classic methods.
i think what he did, is that he can quickly form any 2 digit number by slightly moving the cards, that's why he first asked for Penn's number and then it took him a bit time to "square" them off and that's why numbers formed in odd places and not on center like on a clock.
so those holes and order of cards was very important, it's just matter of practicing so he can form correct number by slightly moving certain cards, while making it look like all he did is squared them off.
@@SethiozProject I thought the "real glimpse" was referencing Kyle getting a peek at Penns number. This way he could also take his time sorting the cards during the trick, I'd assume order and maybe some size differences should be enough to get any 2 digit number with that amount of cards without having to resort to something fiddely like slightly shifting them. There should be plenty of ways to get to know Penns numbers, but my guess would be that it involved the case in some way - the reflective surface of the lid could be misdirection, but it might also be part of the method.
He used his phone to light up the number. The number was said BEFORE his reveal. That’s all the hints you’re going to get about how he did it, but writing down the number was just a red herring.
@@SethiozProject Except he squares the cards BEFORE he asks for Penn's number. The cards do not move after the number is announced.
@@agentstepheng289 you completely misunderstood everything what i said. i was referring to that regardless of which order the cards are in, he can ALWAYS form any 2 digit number.
It takes someone who suffers from some sort of speech impairment to know another one. I talk in a similar manner whenever I speak aloud and in front of a lot of people. And just like you, I also suffer from obsessive compulsive tendencies. It's always good to see those kinds of people making things happen on stage. Nerds built this platform, they formed the whole entirety of the web and online space, and many are also working on cyber security, and the list goes on from there. Keep it going! People enjoy inventions on stage and off stage.
nice... u didnt fool them but you surely gave everyone including p&t something new 👍👍👍
Awesome and unique effect! Huge fan of this guy. I own a lot of effects he’s put out… genius. Keep creating Kyle!
Great work and presentation. Thank you for sharing.
Great trick! As someone with OCD I appreciate how obsession can sometimes lead to good things!
Before watching the episode air I was wondering what trick you would pick to present. I think your very unique mentalism trick was a great choice even if it did not fool P&T. Looking forward to seeing what other crazy creations you come up with this year!
Really enjoyed the trick, really, really liked you. You seem like an awesome dude, and thanks for all the great work you do as a speech therapist.
This was very cool and unique!
I LOVE IT! Great creation, Kyle!!!!
great performance 👏 👍👍
Fantastic job! I haven't seen you before and I'm off to find more content of yours. Very neat stuff. I appreciated you sharing yourself personally as well. Talking about your stuttering and your OCD openly and saying it like it's just a thing, and sometimes helpful too, was refreshing to me.
I'm on the neurodivergent side as well. I'm fairly recently diagnosed, though, so I'm still not used to saying what my various diagnosis are without hearing the various and sundry voices I've heard and witnessed all my life. I hear them denigrate people with xy or z mental illness, and I've see how people change when they find out, locking people out of friendships, jobs, loans, and so many other things. So speaking it clearly is something I'm working on still.
So, thank you. I don't know if you planned it that way but I really think your casual and even pleasant way of presenting your OCD and stuttering did good in the world. Normalizing this stuff is always the best way, I've seen and heard. It makes me dream of a world where some child can talk freely about what's going on with them and perhaps they can be diagnosed with some stuff early so they don't have to live 59 years thinking they're broken and should be ashamed.
I dearly hope that world is coming. You did something to make it happen in your appearance.
I love his response to what Penn said......Very Classy Man and performer!!!!!! PLUS, I wonder if the scenery behind him in the beginning was where he lives because I loved it!!!!
Very well done Kyle! Such an amazing trick! You are a creative genius! 👏
You fooled me! Very nice. I've been getting tired of card tricks, but THIS was original. Well done!
I absolutely loved your stellar performance. Bravo!!!
I enjoyed this trick very much! I have OCD as well (amongst other issues) but I haven't been able to get my brain to be creative like this. I'm jealous!
Well done!
I have no clue...but I think Penn's use of the word "glimpse" tells us something. Somehow he was able to glimpse the card as he put the little metal box into the black bag and then, knowing the number, arranged the cards to produce 9 and 8. Just a guess all based on the early use of the word "glimpse".
Maybe some sort of transparent plastic on the bottom of the case that he can see through when he puts it in the bag?
he palmed that sheet of paper while he grabbed the box, slow it down frame-by-frame
After the cell phone trick scandle it won't be surprised that they talked before the show
I don't have any magic experience, but from what I understand of the code speak, somewhere he can take a peak at the number, then the cards are designed in such a specific manner that it is possible for any number from 0-99 to be formed with the cards. The question parts is probably a part of the show to allow the magician to arrange the cards in the required way.
@@furgel7717 I believe at 2:47 when he is putting it in the bag, the bottom may have a way to be see through as he has it towards himself as he puts it in the bag
Really cool trick!
Light Year is so original!
That was so much fun :)
Well done bud!
Very unusual reveal. I like it.
I was actually at Magi this year 2023 you did such a amazing job there performing but quick question for you do you know where I can find that phone trick that you did at magi fest
Cool invention for sure. It's like a reverse version of the "Mysterious Mind Reader Cards" that works with any two digit number instead of only 1-60. I think your slight hesitation during one particular part was just a little too long to fool Teller, but overall its an amazing trick.
I picked a number randomly when the game started and it was 53 LOL
A fantastic effect 😊🤘😊🤘😎
Great performance! Awesome how you turned stuttering into a strength. Just a great feel-good/positivity vibe overall, very nice to see.
Nice trick and very topical for all the UFO stuff going on. 👏
That’s was amazing
that was awesome. I don't usually get Pens hints but I got this easily. Kinda figured it out from just looking at all the holes in the cards. great great performance though. I too had a speach issue as a kid. Lisp, stuttered, slow reader, so on and on. fear of public speacking. you are a hero bud. Keep it up! :D
Colour of the bag clearly, won't be moved, uplifting I see. Questions were very clever misdirection.
Too bad they figured it all out, very creative trick 👍
There was a few holes in the trick but it was still brilliant!
I would love to see these from an audience perspective, the peek we so obvious on camera, but would it have been in person?
Is this on the market I love it
This dudes personality & creativity is gonna take him far 👌
I really enjoyed this trick. I didn't see exactly how you did it, but that doesn't matter, What matters is that you invented it, and had the great skills to produce the end result, in a very entertaining way.
He does sell this trick kit for $60 online. It's called "Light Year by Kyle Purnell". If you're interested in learning how it's done and preforming it yourself for friends and family.
He posted a link to it in his own comment on this video.
I love the UFO theme 🛸👽🕳. And the cards are super cool
Guessing bottom of the case is translucent, so when the number went in face down he simply looked at the bottom of it before he slipped it into the bag, then re-arranged the cards to a predefined order to show 98.
Not particularly coded code this time. Though I want fooled either, I worry the effect might be lessened if people were at all paying attention. Great act
Impressive effect. I can only imagine how long it took to develop given all the possible number combinations
Only 0 to 9 are needed for each stack.
@@johnnyfearlesszrx no zeroes. He said no 50, 60, etc.
@@the-guy-on-your-moms-couch probably also no 5's in the ones place. 55, 15, 25 seem too normal and not "random" enough
Around the 3 minute mark I think he could see the number when the case was lifted and put into the bag.
I think that's the moment that Penn was referring to when he used the word "glimpse".
2:55 crazy to just sneak a peak at what penn wrote. Haha! He really paused in his talking at that moment too.
Cool device he made to show the number tho
Thank you for not exposing the outcome in the title of your video. So many people write 'FOOLER' across the video and spoil the ending! Thanks for honouring the spirit of the show :)
Most Acts that didn’t fool do not spoil 😉
No one:
*David Copperfield walks in with an Alien
I think I know how the trick was done, as in how the card props work, but what i can't figure out is how in the brief time he had between penn saying the number and the reveal he would have manipulated it, makes me think he got the number earlier to pull of any trick like that right in front of penn.
There's an Area 51 Alien Truckstop and Bordello outside of Las Vegas.
This one doesn't even need a spoiler alert, the only thing I would say is "MULTIPLE OUTS"... that's the whole thing, forget about the paper, the box and the bag, that had absolutely nothing to do with the trick.
Nevertheless, it's clever how he designed those "plastic cards" in order to allow for "MULTIPLE OUTS"
I suggest the Multiple Outs are organised by a squared up orientation.
@@ColinDaviesNZ definately, the orientation as well as the squareing seem to be essential for this trick to work. Not to mention the sneak peek at Penn's choosen number, very clever and subtle.
that was amazing, eventually you goin to have the oportunity of go again, fool them the next time
i had the number 53 in my head while I was playing along.
Guy says he stutters but he speaks way better than me
Thanks 🙏 many years of speech therapy
Well he made him say the number before he guessed it 🤣
He already had the cards stacked to reveal 98 at the time he asked Penn to state his number. He got the number from the false bottom case that he had Penn put his number face down in, which he then picked up and looked at before placing it in the bag. A lot of reveals involve a magician locking in their answer and asking their participant to state their choice aloud before revealing what they locked in.
I didnt know TJ Millers cooler brother was a magician! ;)
That was a good trick
That was good and he says he not a performer more a inventor he's a pretty good performer
Never tell teh magician teh number before they themself reveal it.
"My dad stutters and my mother is a speech therapist." He should have mentioned that's how my father met my mother!
But you got mine number, 53!!! Pretty cool. hahaha
I wonder how they interpret the code talk in order to know if they got fool
Never seen this before and I picked 98!
As he puts the box in the bag, he looks at the bottom of the box... the card was face down in the box so obviously, he could see the number through the bottom... then it was just a matter of placing the cards in the right order...
It's quite obvious how it's done but still an amazing trick. Depending on how the cards are stacked and their orientation gives us other numbers. With the number we see in this trick we already know that we have an 6 (upsidedown 9), 8 and 9.
I can even see a 3 in the 8 and a 1 in the 9/6 by covering a few more holes. But even if the trick is obvious it's a fun trick with a lot of innovation needed for it.
After Penn said the number, the magician have very little time to rearrange anything, and any slide would have to be made very carefully. Doesn't seem so easy to me to come up with those two numbers in 5 seconds
As soon as the number was recited and not guessed, I was onto it. Cool effect though.
That was a red herring, actually. The whole trick was already over by 2:58. (See what the magician does at 2:57?) The rest is just logistics and showtime.
I think all the magic was in he phone, because you asked him to say the number BEFORE you revealed it, which gave your assistant some time to turn on custom shaped light, you never showed those cards squared up, so i believe they let light thru even if there's no hole. i think it's made of some kind of black translucent plastic, similar to what keyboard buttons look like, they look black, but if you put light under them, it glows right thru. i think it was something like that and number literally appeared on the phone screen as lit up.
or actually, i think you squared the cards in a way that it has holes for every possible number, like those LED clocks that can only show certain shapes, so those cards could have let thru any possible combination and it was just written on your phone by assistant.
OR it was much simpler and you have your own way of moving the cards to form numbers, for example it has 10 dots on it and if you slide one card above 1 dot, it's 1, if you slide it bit further, it's 2, if you slide other card bit further, it's 3 ..etc. because i noticed you didn't just square them off, you moved them in very specific way before revealing the numbers.
either of those methods could work, but i think it was the last one i suggested. very simple and just need to practice so you can form correct numbers fast. that's also why numbers were so off the center and in odd area that didn't make much sense. so i think if you put those cards on a light and move them just slightly, you can form any 2 digit number.
I don't think having someone backstage affect the trick or having anyone in on the trick before one goes on stage is allowed. Otherwise everything could just be a camera from afar snooping on what he wrote and then tada I know your number! Also, that's hella words you done wrote huh
Doesn’t need to be. Those cards can reveal any number based on how you rotate and arrange them.
That's one way it could be done. But, here the phone really was just for the light and there was no off-stage assistant. When I was younger, I would have told you exactly out it was done, but I think I've outgrown that.
cool
If he at least had some magic in the strange box that holds Penns number, then he could produce the solution without asking Penner to reveal it before. But producing the the solution after Penner tells it our loud is just some aligning of the punch-cards.
lol yeah. My version of the trick is I smoke a spliff for 10 minutes asking Penn what old school tricks he misses and what type of magic will be big with the advent of robots. And then I'd ask him what his number was, and then write it on a piece of paper and show everyone. Bam!
Alyson Hannigan has aged very nicely
I swear on my mother's grave I was thinking 98 myself, wtf
that was really unique
Really impressive trick, but I am a bit let down by the ending. I think it would be a lot more impressive to the lay person if you keep the ending reveal with the squared up cards, but implement some different way of getting the number, so you can show it and go "so is this your number?" and be right the first time, though that might be less impressive to P&T. In any case, the framing and show is stellar, well done.
If i did that trick i would have the phone light source do voice recognition and illuminate just where it needs to
I was hoping that's what Penn was gonna guess...that way I would have fooled em ;)
It's a very nice idea and great performance but..an easy trick at the end. I hoped for a little more complex plot to it all.
How did he determine what number Penn had chosen initially, that is where I am stumped.
@@yaboymayo1 He didn't. He arranged the plates after Penn told which number he thought of. The plates can form any two digit number, you just have to put them in the right sequence. A part of the video seems to be cut as you can see that the plates aren't squared together at 5:43, than he brings the phone down to show it to Penn and all plates are squared up. The magic happens between 5:40 and 5:43.

Ohhhh, the look on his face is so heartbreaking! ;(
Sadly there's no real way that they could let you know that they knew without spoiling the entire trick. It was still really cool though and I'm impressed you were able to configure it into the correct number that quickly and smoothly :)
That was new. It would be a better trick if the light source was not an obvious screen. Fx if the light souce was some kind of lamp with a mechanical switch to turn it on and off.

the trick was as good as penn's ability to wrap so much bullshit around his coded message to say you didn't fool him! i loved it!
Fooled the shit outta me lol
He should incorporate the card penn wrote on back into the routine. It just gets lost in the mix
Re "He should incorporate the card penn wrote on": He does. 2:57. Ask yourself if you really believe that the bottom of that box is opaque.
Agreed. He could've at least asked to show the card at the end but he just asks Penn to say the number. So the card literally only exists for the performer to read the number.
One time at band camp I …
why he needs a pair of four? Cant it be done with a pair of 3? Every card can be in basic position (1), flipped (2), turned (3) and turned and flipped (4), basically:
1) 1-1-1
2) 1-1-2
3) 1-2-1
4) 1-2-2
5) 1-1-3
6) 1-3-1
7) 1-3-3
8) 1-1-4
9) 1-4-1
10) 1-4-4
etc. Even considering the mirroring, there should be more than enough options
am i the only one impressed with the fact that penn made that calculation so fast. if 3 is one half of 5 than what is one third of 10
Penn knows the ceil function
Dude I paused the video and had to think about it. Very impressive indeed.
Fooled me. I kinda followed Penns hints but I have no idea how it's done.
Even if it didn't fool P&T, it was a great effect and very well performed 👏🏼
I also thought of 98 when he said think of a 2 digit number 😳😳
Based on the current view count, so did approximately 1000 other people
Well, definitely not something that could fool many people, guess most people are aware how that gimmick works, right?
The moment I saw those plates I knew whats up, nice gimmick and routine nonetheless, and I bet it wasn't easy to memorize all different positionings.
Penn’s code tho
I wonder if her wardrobe has a hundred of the same outfit???????
glasses is a trick somehow. camera cuts on face. prblt glasses contains mirors :D
So, you wait till Pen says the number, then slide the cards to the holes you need to make the number. Everything else is a distraction. Quite the setup.
Nope. There's only one final squaring: Square. So that wasn't it. The trick was a sneak peak at the number (2:56-2:59), followed by carefully orienting the cards (3:07-4:31) to spell "98". Note that the magician holds up _every single card_ then places it on the table in the correct orientation. See Penn's eyes flicking repeatedly down to the table? He's observing all that. So of course it didn't fool him.
Shouldn't this be called "A magician can't fool Pen and Teller with Alien Technology"
I shit you not, as he was writing the number I thought of 98. Maybe I can read minds??
eh, he palmed the sheet as soon as he grabbed the box
