I think I know how the trick was done, as in how the card props work, but what i can't figure out is how in the brief time he had between penn saying the number and the reveal he would have manipulated it, makes me think he got the number earlier to pull of any trick like that right in front of penn.
Shouldn't this be called "A magician can't fool Pen and Teller with Alien Technology"

As he puts the box in the bag, he looks at the bottom of the box... the card was face down in the box so obviously, he could see the number through the bottom... then it was just a matter of placing the cards in the right order...

Guessing bottom of the case is translucent, so when the number went in face down he simply looked at the bottom of it before he slipped it into the bag, then re-arranged the cards to a predefined order to show 98.

Well sure. The trick is Penn says a number and he forms that number aligning the cards. THe rest is just filler.
Of course that’s how he does it, but the thing is he didn’t rearrange them after Pennet it. He already knew the number before hand and arranged them accordingly.

What gave it away was you asking Penn for the number. If you had this effect with a method that you showed him the number first, you would have fooled them.
Hi Joe, Thanks for the comment. The method you are describing is the method used. I could have absolutely revealed the number first before he confirmed. What is important to understand is that theatrical structure is so much more important than sheer method when it comes to mentalism. Think about this. When I reveal the number, I want it to 'hit'/'resonate' with the ENTIRE audience at the same time. If I simply revealed it before Penn said what it was, the audience (who is arguably most important in the performance setting) wouldn't know if it hit at that exact moment, and I would lose the snappy punctuation of the revelation that I'm going for. So yes, I didn't (methodologically) need him to say it first, but I promise asking for the number first to catch the audience up to be on the same page works exponentially better :)

Sadly there's no real way that they could let you know that they knew without spoiling the entire trick. It was still really cool though and I'm impressed you were able to configure it into the correct number that quickly and smoothly :)

I don't like guessing tricks...BUUUUT I really hope this is just math. I thought about how you can guess a number just by coding it in binary. This can be actually similar. If you know the number, you just need to code each digit in binary. 9 for example is 8+1, so 1001. You need 4 cards. It may be hard idk but you can design the cards such that you shuffle them accordingly so that it will show 9 by covering the proper holes.
