Steerer Tube Too Short?

- Hey guys, today I’m going to show you the adapter you need to install when your steerer tube is too short.
I have two stem riser adapters, one is 1 1/8" x 25.4mm and the other one is 1 1/8” x 22.2mm.
These adapters are being used to convert the old threaded forks from 1” quill stem to 1 1/8” threadless stem.
If the diameter of the steerer tube is 25.4mm, the 25.4mm adapter is not going to fit. You need the 22.2mm adapter to fit into the 25.4mm steerer tube.
Simply put that in and tighten the top bolt.
The extender will increase the length of the steerer tube by 2 inches (50mm).

I added a headset cap (top cap) and star fangled nut into the adapter.
Thank you for sharing your amazing videos Danyo. The master level simplicity of your videos allow learning accessible for any level of bicycle enthusiast.
thanks for sharing your tutorial 😁, I almost got the wrong item for extending the steerer tube 😅
A big thank you because I don't know why nobody else thought to do this either they do it and they skip over something and you think you're missing something because you don't know nothing about it because you hold down front of you and it's not making sense it's not working how it's supposed to but I will subscribe to your videos and set my notifications thank you
Very helpful.
Thanks.
looks great!!
DMR stem has lowesr STACK HEIGHT at 27mm ,then also use an expander over a star fangled nut ,you get more purchase and the expansion grubs come in various extension lengths uf needed.
Awsome, thank you!
Thanking you mate!
Good jobs dude
This the answer in my question ..i got yesss
I think you just saved me some suffering. Thank you.
Once the stem is on, how do you pre load the bearings with a top cap before tightening the stem bolts? There needs to be a thread in the Allen key for the top cap bolt to tighten down to ?
Alright, will work on a video to explain the options.
@@DanyoSports cheers, I have one of these but have found a bolt out of a bbb extender with a thread in the middle of the Allen key and used that 👍
Installed the star fangled nut and headset cap for adjusting the preload on the headset bearings, thanks for pointing it out.

beautiful.
Just need to countersink that locking device inside the tube . So can run the flower nut and get some tension on the headset bearings.

Can I used 22.2 to a 25.4 inner size of the fork, because I am not sure to the exact size of my MTB?
how many ball bearing is should i used in a traditional headset that has 25.4mm fork diameter? Is it 20pcs or 16pcs ball bearing?
I have a 28.6mm steerer tube but lenght is short i need to extend.
THX. Do you know a lightweight solution for carbon Steerer?
I would just cut it in the middle and fit an internal tube and weld it in place then dress the weld and refit. The weld will be hidden once in place.
Saw this in a video recently...there was comments if failures unfortunately
Great video but can i use this for classic fixie?
Big support for this video
I'm here from philippines
Thanks for watching, it would fit if the steerer tube is 1 1/8”.
is it applicable to all types of Steerer tube Extender?
How if my fork diameter (diameter of the tube was 22,2 which adaptor stem i use for it ? What size, is it 22.2 or below such as 21 ? Thank u so much for your answers
This would fit on 1” threaded forks:

Hi I have 1" 1/8 threadless fork which is too short which size do I need to extend it the 22.2mm or the 25.4mm? Many thanks
Hi, 25.4mm should work on 1 1/8” steerer tube, buy a reputable brand like Profile Design because mine had fitment issues with the 25.4mm.
Ah thank you
Hi, just wanna ask if there's a steerer tube extender for Over sized tube fork? Thanks 😇
Hi, what is the size of your steerer tube? 1.5”? The 25.4mm adapter would fit but you’ll have to swtich to 1 1/8” stem.
I'm running the same adapter on my bike. Do you have some play in your fork? If so, would you say it's because of the adapter, or is my problem else where? Thanks
Did you check your headset? Try tightening the headset and make sure there’s no gap between the stem and headset. Mine is alright.
Mines tighter than a ducks ass and still has play rubbish
Great video mate. Is this safe on a mtb? Thanks
Yes, riders rode quill stems on their rigid mountain bikes in the 1990’s.
DanyoSports I’m interested in this product, I should get the 1-1/8 x 25.4mm model? Just making sure, thanks mate
DanyoSports my fork is 1-1/8”, just measured the inner diameter, it’s 25.4
My fork is 1-1/8” x 25.4mm and the 22.2mm adapter fits perferctly. Before buying it, just make sure to check with the seller because each product is made differently.
@@DanyoSports Wished i read this reply before buying it. I did measure the inner diameter as 25.4 +/- with a digital caliper, i bought the 25.4mm option, I just wanted it to be very plush. Thanks for the reply!
How does it lock inside the steerer tube?
Can I use this kind of set up for MTB
How do you set the preload with star nut?
Uhm.... preload on the star nut? THERE IS NO SUCH THING!
My fork, is 1/2in shy of coming through the hole, ??? I put rst/ scwinn forks on my trec 4300/in place of the suntour, the tubes on both are extremely different / meaning ones longer than the other ,, does this fix that problem???? Or do I have to cut some of the tube off???? The rst, forks to make it fit???
Yes, different frames have different head tube length, the adapter would extend the steerer tube by 50mm.
What size is your fork tube and where did you get that headset pls give me the link ASAP!
The size of the fork tube is 28.6mm/1 1/8” (inner is 25.4mm/1”). The headset is standard 1 1/8”, please check:
www.jensonusa.com/Aheadset-Zero-Stack-Headset
In my case their is still a flower attached on my fork, do I need to get rid of that in order to install the extender?
Yes, you need to remove it in order to install the extender.
I’m 5’8”, what size should I choose?
Do I need to remove the fork flower nut before installing this? Thank you!
Yes, you need to remove the star nut.
@@DanyoSports thank you so much!!
@@DanyoSports I got my adapter in just fine and don't have a shim but waiting on one and while everything is tightened up I can twist my adapter left and right with my handlebars, what can I do to avoid this? I've tried more than one adapter and same issue, is it the steer tube itself or the adapters I'm using.
My tube doesn’t come threw the neck of my bike it’s shy 1.5, in- so use a quill??? Will that work???
No, if your steerer tube is 1.5”, the quill adapter is not going to work.
Hey so I got my adapter in good, got a little wobble but I'm waiting on a shim to keep it from wobbling but my adapter isn't staying solid, I can twist my bars and adapter while tightened completely. What can I do to avoid this?

I would get the right adapter.
Idk If you still read the comments on this video still but at 1:34 when you tighten the top bolt what does it thread into?
It tightens the bottom wedge of the adapter.
@@DanyoSports oh ok thank you 😃
Its called a Quill
Sir im confused can you do this on a bmx to so i could see how it wotls on it
BMXs use smaller quill stems so this adaptor won’t work.
I think in this example only the stem is holding on the fork with no preload. I think you have to use your own top cap that is wider in diameter to preload am I right. In this case the top cap is flush with the tube so there is no preload being used in this example.
This is what I did, I hope this helps.

Can we just sand down the 25.4 extender to 25.3 so that it fits in?
Yes, it shouldn’t be a problem.
Is there a star nut inside the steerer tube?
No, there isn’t.
Do you need a star nut for this?
Yes, you can put a star nut or expander.

Is that 22.2mm oversize on the top?

How do you preload the bearings?
You can put an expander in there:

What is headset do you use? Thx
It’s an old AHeadset with caged bearings.
Holy crap no one actually do this... This is wildly unsafe. No preloading of the bearings is also going to cause premature wear. Please please don't do this to your bike
Only stupid people would do this. This video need reported & all other videos
What about starnut?
Can i replace the cap with my another top cap?
Yes, it’s possible, just make sure the bolt fits with your cap.
Fork standar?
And what size is your stem to fit an adapter?
It’s a standard 1 1/8” threadless stem.

Do you have a tutorial how to remove steerer tube?
Loosen and pull out
Can you give me a link on how to measure a fork tube and btw sir is an 22.2mm stem adapter can fit into a stem like 60mm and your fork tube 1 inch?
Please read this article:
www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/headset-standards
The 60mm is the length of the stem, it will fit your 1” fork tube if you install the adaptor.
The adaptor will convert your 1” fork tube to 1 1/8” so you can put a 1 1/8” stem.
still need cap flower inside the extender?
No, you have to remove it to put the extender in.

Bro how to buy this ??
does it work on carbon fiber steerer tube sir???
It’s safe on carbon fork but I do not recommend on carbon steerer tube. It should work fine, just don’t overtighten it.
Can a flower nut fit?
Yes, you can use a star nut.
Terimakasih bro 🇲🇨
Thank you so much for watching my videos! Make sure you also check out my updated video about this adapter!
Have you tried this with a carbon steerer?
No, I haven’t tried it on carbon steerer.
@Wooly Chewbakker I wouldn't use it on carbon steerer because carbon fiber can shatter easily at some point, I would rather get a new carbon fork with the correct size.
Can i put different top cap?
It’s possible, you need to find a top cap that fits the bolt.
Is this ok with the carbon forks?
It should work fine, make sure to not overtighten it.
fit for manitou mechete?
Yes, your steerer diameter is 1 1/8” (25.4mm), so you need 22.2mm adapter.
can you put a quill stem on that?
You can’t put a quill stem because the fork is not threaded.
This part's name?
u should used the compression plug..

You can also get it from ebay or elsewhere, just look up “quill stem adapter”.

You can get it from eBay or Amazon, search "Quill Stem Riser".
It went together easily in less than an hour. czcams.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.
Use a 1" adapter on 1"1/8 fork is extremely dangerous... It can drop out way more easily as it don't fit fine. The internal diameter of a threadless fork is not always the same as a threaded one (for plunger stem). Maybe with some grinding the 1"1/8 could fit ?
Maybe a lot of grinding would fit but I wouldn’t recommend it. The 1” adapter is sturdy and so far I’ve put 100 km+ on it without any issues, the stem is holding the fork and adapter together, so as long as you tighten the top bolt, it will be fine.
Is your fork threadless or threaded?
The fork is threadless, 1 1/8” steerer tube.
This how to purchase
You can get it from Amazon or AliExpress.
ESO ESTA MAL....X. que tienes que aser mucha presión..,esa pieza esta echa para una tijera de fierro no de aluminio en cierto momento de uso se puede girar...y también no te dice como aser presión para las tasas....
Suitable for MTB fork?
Yes, it would fit as long as your steerer diameter is 1 1/8” (25.4mm) and make sure you tighten all the bolts.
theres no downward pressure on the headset though
You could always put another top cap and tighten from the top, my Hope headset top cap fits but the bolt is sticking a little bit out, either find another long bolt or a top cap that will fit.
@@DanyoSports You need a specific compression rate for the headset or else the headset will be destroyed.
@@DanyoSports I guess the question (Gilberto Gil, bob button, Gavin Bartlett, Klunker 714) refers to HOW to preload the headset, resp. how to avoid play in the headset. Maybe I understood wrong - but without the star nut inside the steerer tube (at its place is the stem riser adapter) there is NO PRELOAD posible?! See for reference "Tech Tuesday #30: Headset Adjustment". Pardon my English.

These do not work they don’t create enough tension between fork stem and extender mine just spins and doesn’t turn the forks waste of time
Something is wrong with your extender,, mine doesn’t have this problem. Try to install a star nut in the extender and lock it with the fork: czcams.com/video/Gy264za1SIk/video.html
DanyoSports I’ve sorted it for now by putting a threaded rod m6 through the extender into the existing star nut by tapping it down not too keen on it tbh wouldn’t say it’s that safe but holds would not recommend for any type of mtb just leisurely rides
Alright, good to know.
Should be titled "The Wrong Way to Extend a Steerer Tube". Tip: Don't use a 1" tube extender on a 1 1/8" tube! Also there is a way to pre-load the bearings with such an adapter, which absolutely should be done. This video is dangerous!

yes that is best for the inner diameter of the 1 1/8" steering tube, still these extenders are not recommended. An adjustable expanding collar can add preload, but I recommend just replacing the fork with a better fit. Hope that helps.
