Hello! Thank you CZcams algorithm for suggesting you guys a few days ago. Been bingeing your back catalogue. Love you both, the frustration and gut reaction of Joseph balanced with the encyclopaedic six degree of separation insight and love of movies of Nick. Spoil them, spoil them all!
"Paper plates....."
you guys make me laugh.
“I don’t know, maybe I was abused.” 😂😂 *and Joseph’s accompanying chuckle*
Hahaha
Made me spit out my Starbucks!🤣
Adore you two!
100% Agree with this review. I too was distracted by the contacts Gabrielle LaBelle was wearing and thought it was just me.
People getting emotional and rooting for this film to get Oscars solely from the trailer and the name of the filmmaker honestly killed me lmao
I was a background extra in the first scene and even in the day shooting I felt confused about the narrative, especially I am a Spielberg fan who went to USC.
“All Quiet on the Western Front” is about to be the “Parasite” darling of the 2023 Oscars as all these legacy filmmakers flop. Spielberg isn’t doing himself any favors by lambasting other filmmakers
He doesn’t make good films anymore
What did he say about other filmmakers?
I agree. Perhaps it’s time to retire on a high note before it gets worse and not put down other filmmakers. He had his day.
You guys are great critics and the only brave enough to admit The Fabelmans is not great Cinema, thank you for your honesty. I grew up with Spielberg's films and I love and respect his work, but this movie is just a well made movie, nothing more. The Oscar hype is for Spielberg The Filmmaker, not this piece I'm sure. Greetings from Mexico.
I want to be hyped for this movie with all the critical acclaim but the trailer never locked me in. Your criticisms are exactly what my “fears” were. I say fears lightly as my excitement for this film is pretty low so I’m not exactly losing sleep over whether or not it’s good. I think I’ll wait until it streams. Good review though!
Joseph is like Cardio B: "I don't cook I don't clean.. but..." Hahaha
I did not enjoy the trailer to this movie at all.
Nick's reaction to Joseph questioning using paper plates was hilarious!!!
You both are my favorite channel and I always wish I had some clever, pithy comment for every single video! As I don’t, this works as a sacrificial comment to the algorithm gods :)
"...maybe I was abused." Well, maybe we all were, but we were well loved and no mother's should have to apologize for discipline. Great review and insight from both of you. I knew reviews were really a love fest between Spielberg and reviewers. Nick seemed quiet on this one so it's probably a real mixed bag.
Just watched this and I’m so glad you guys felt the same way I did about it. IT BORED ME TO DEATH ☠️ I wasn’t sure who exactly this film was made for other than Spielberg? I hope he loved it…I guess..
Hi Boos!! Hope you both are having a great day!. Was it like "Big Fish"? I kind of hope it would give those vibes..
I’m a cynic in the Ancient Greek tradition through and through but occasionally I need a feel good movie to remind me of my humanity. I really like Spielberg. He’s always capable of wildly imaginative sequences, even if they border on the schmaltz. But yeah, it does seem cheesy but hey who doesn’t like nachos once in a while
Really looking forward to the film. I only recall one Spielberg film I didn’t like. So I’m sure I will enjoy this. The two leads are always good. Doesn’t matter as I’ve seen all but one Spielberg film and I will see this regardless of reviews. Good work as always.
Great video! The movie just came out in France and is getting rave reviews from the local critics... idk why!
Good review.
The most missing factor in THE FABELMANS is WHY or IF Spielberg fell in love with "making movies." Instead, it clearly shows a little boy who wanted to grab hold of life/reality, slow it down and become less fearful of it. Sammy didn't seek out his father's Super8 camera. He sought out a train set. It's his mother who presents him with his father's camera as an option. What proceeds is then de rigueur scenes of young Spielberg making home movies that expectedly receive appropriate praise. Then the story of his parents' very progressive and mature breakup doesn't shed any light on his "love of making movies." At most we see him get the "permission slip" from his grandmother's brother and his mother to follow his love at whatever cost. Because he's Spielberg, we're supposed to just know that that love is film. Contrast this film with the kiss montage from Cinema Paradiso and you get a sense of what's actually missing.
Interesting about the new Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek movie! I'm pretty sure that the girl on the movie poster at 17:14 is Sissy Spacek's daughter, Schuyler Fisk - just a fun fact that I picked up watching The Babysitters Club as a kid, LOL! Thank you both for another great review :)
Oh, yeah I forgot she was in that babysitters club movie! I remember that one being a big part of my childhood ❤
Haven't watched yet but I had to click just because of your expressions in the thumbnail 😄
Spielberg actually has a really interesting life, but this movie makes it seem like a fantasy then the reality of his life.
that's kinda the point? The film is a commentary on cinema itself.
Great video! 🌞
My only thought the whole time "why the contact lenses?"
This was an amazing movie, slow parts at times but a 10/10 for me
I thought the movie was fine, but on the other hand it was just whatever. I did enjoy Judd Hirsch’s scene. He was great
I had little to no interest in seeing this movie. I saw that I could stream it so decided to watch it after golden globes and it won. Personally thought it was a snooze fest. Unremarkable and boring. You all are spot on.
"Unremarkable, corny, and all over the place." Perfect description!
Have been making it through this movie half an hour at a time over the past week … while well made/directed, feels so inessential / self-indulgent … why was this a story that needed to be told ...
Paul Dano also looks absurd as father of teenage boy
Executive producer of Hogans Hero’s ended up producing The Godfather
They didn't show him directing Joan Crawford in the Night Gallery episode? That would have been fun.
I also thought Michelle Williams was doing a spoofy Judy Garland-esque imitation!!
I went into it expecting to think it was just alright. I haven't loved anything Spielberg has done since Catch Me If You Can. Thought West Side Story was fine. But I think Fabelmans is great. There is a lot going on but theres layers upon layers to pick apart and the emotional moments really hit me. Could've been maybe 25 minutes shorter but hey what are you gonna do
Hello! David here from Sebring Florida USA 🇺🇸 I have been a movie fan for over fifty years and I loved the movie! I am very big on nostalgia movies, and I used to make small movies in high school like he did Sorry you did not like it more. I felt bad that he had so many personal problems. I went on to own Movie Memories poster shop in Palo Alto California for 25 years, So movies are my life. I hope his film wins at least one Oscar 😊 Ps I cried during this movie, I thought it was so we done. See you at the movies!😎
I wonder if the part with his Mom is kind of a nod to his relationship with Kate Capshaw when he was married to Amy Irving.
In the novel Jaws Ellen Brody and Hooper do have an affair.
Paul Dano has blossomed into an odd looking adult, he was a good looking teenager in LIE, a movie with Brian Cox. He has taken on some odd roles as an adult
He has such a baby face that when they said he was the dad I was like what, no!
Family from Jaws, family from Poltergeist too!
Great commentary!!
The trailer looks pretty insufferable.
I really wanted to be on board for this movie, but after the trailer I just have no desire to see it.
Unremarkable is the best way to describe this movie LOL
Hi, thanks for your review. I was completely shocked how bad the movie was, for me. I had high expectations and I was so dissapointed while watching it. For me, there were very little moments of authenticity, honesty and emotional connection. It could have been a masterpiece but it isn't. I wonder how so many people love that film - as if I'm in a parallel universe - have we all seen the same movie?
Watching another 30 minute chunk now. The combination of baby faced / odd looking Paul Dano + actor playing his son who looks like he could be in college / more conventionally handsome is pretty hilarious
My like is mostly for the Paper Plates comment 😂. Thanks, Spielberg!
The academy is going to eat this up. It looks cute
I completely agree with you too. I think Spielberg wanted to make a film about the complexities of love for art and family, but hide it in a dated stereotypical glossy film. It’s almost like he had to make everyone look good in the end. There are some fascinating life truths in this film that get glossed over by rushing back to movie making magic. Look over here, pay no attention to the guy behind the curtain. But the art in this film is behind the curtain.
As a mixed race black kid I know how overt and covert racism feels and this film even seemed to play light with the racism Spielberg experienced. And the reason we actually went to the movie to see Spielberg really in his journey as a movie maker is the point the film ends. All of the Oscar talk is going to drive me crazy.
Ha OK Paul Dano is 38, and Gabrielle LaBelle (actor playing his son) is 20.... Why did anyone think this was a good idea ....
I really disliked the mom character in this, and how her portrayal just came off as completely insane. There was definitely a weird Oedipal vibe in those shots of her son watching her dancing almost naked. I thought the movie was unfocused and all over the place. There's telling your personal story by just throwing in what you want, and then there's editing it into a cohesive narrative.
Glad you’re honest, trailer looked Ehh, not gonna see this. Spielberg’s “ Story”, he went to Long Beach State ( my school) “ supposedly “ and snuck into movie studios to watch films being made…? As the many legends have been told… yeah sure. Reality is how his father was well connected with General Electric as an Engineer /inventor , maybe even some Military background connection etc… I like your real views and you’re not going to make up stuff to get points😉
Cissys daughter stars as well
Steven got in east compared to other filmmakers.
Things that I went but…… the anti Semitic kid was coded as gay to start, but they completely dropped it for handsome jock gets his girl…zzzzzzzz, or crazy catholic girl looking to convert the Jew but ends up being the first love even though she has no redeeming qualities, or the mother realizing how her secret love is actually very visible and promises to stop, but then gets hostile and resentful. So basically everything was fine when the adults didn’t own the reality but when truth is spoken the fantasy ended, but no one really still talked about it except the screaming daughter. And why did the father get up-set seeing the picture at the end. I was thinking it was a wedding celebration but it was just the adults goofing off like they always had done. Am I the only one that got three way vibes at the start?
The entire movie is so bizarre. Your comment basically spells out what I've been thinking. The nail cutting scene was cringe too. She was being manhandeled by both. I thought they had some kinda open relationship.
@@HeelPower200 For real the only way the husband didn't see what was going on or ANY of them was to be purposely ignore reality. Which Spielberg goes with, but the REALITY is that the adults were in a group relationship knowingly. And when two of them decided their relationship was what they wanted more the dad moved the family away in an attempt to keep her in a relationship with him. The movie pretends to tell truths, but it all comes from a director that does not really want to look at the truths.
Spielberg has fallen off for a while now ever since that terrible Indiana Jones garbage sequel. Dano & Lynch are always interesting. I had no idea Lynch was even in this. I'd honestly rather see a biopic with Lynch as Ford instead 😆
I agree with you guys: "Umm where's the obstacle?" So he got emotional when he thought his parents were having an affair and this makes him quit his passion? That seems kind of immature and sulky rather than an actual problem. And then he starts again and is a success? The end? Lol ok I think I'll skip. Thank you guys for doing this! 🙂 Keep up the great work!
To be fair, kids usually are immature and sulky…and parents having marriage trouble could be emotionally devastating. However, this movie looks awful
“Immature” yeah. He’s a kid. By definition, immature. Lmao. Cause all kids act rationally LOL.
Pretty wild to see this one next to Armageddon Time. One was totally honest and one was completely sugar coated. I didn’t love either lol but I at least appreciate James Gray’s honesty
The movie all around was decent, but the ending with Lynch killed me.
Meh, it's a pass for me guys.
This review seems so harsh.
Why are new movies almost always TERRIBLE anymore???
Hugo was better then this
Totally agree with the review. The movie was underwhelming.
1:03 Unremarkable, corny, and all over the place is exactly how I've felt about Spielberg for the last 25 years.
Sounds like a boring film with absolutely nothing to say. Not sure why it was made. 🤷♀️
Self indulgence. The Spielberg doc was great and all we needed for this life story. Don’t get why the name was changed to Fableman when it’s literally Spielbergs autobiography.
Steven Flopberg delivers another turkey. There's nothing wrong with retiring. His recent output has been tarnishing his legacy.
Speilberg is losing his touch
How hard does the movie try to push the Antisemitism narrative?
