- In this episode I look to install the window frames and front and back doors to the build. This can prove quite fiddly as you will see later in the video when i struggle with some strips of plasticard.

Thanks for not editing out the errors in cutting the doors . It helps to see that even experienced modellers can make a miss cut.
Just come across this series just as I'm thinking of trying a building build for the 1st time. Very good series indeed - thanks very much.
Thank you so much Peter, I’m glad they’ve been of help to you. Paul
Excellent Video Paul... Regards Geoff😎🚒🚒
Thanks Geoff. Paul
This is the life, bank holiday, mug of tea and a Galgorm “how to” video 😎 Jim Morrison would be proud of those doors 😉 Making great progress with the ‘three paint” trick, so much so, I am going to name my current project “Galgorm Tunnel” 👍 Best wishes from County Wicklow
Haha, Galgorm Tunnel, I like it. I expect a IK Brunel type description on the front of it! 😜 No bank holiday for me today, just a days work in the rain. Thanks as always for commenting and supporting. Paul
Very informative Paul it makes all the difference seeing you building it, experiencing the ups and downs and how you correct them .
Thank you once again John. Paul
Hello once again Paul.Just seen your reply.Thank you kindly as i am still ploughing via your videos'etc .I did make a reply as well if you care to read and look.I do watch Tony Eastern/Chadwick/Dean Park Station/Everard Junction/Jenny Kirk/Now yourself ---- In winter months i upgrade all my rolling stock.new wheels, fitting lighting tail end lights etc.. Modelling is never ending,so well worth it at the end of the day, result which never ends ---- I am quite selective who i reply too,as there are far too many TROLLS about, plus know nothing concerning model railway modelling --Keep up the good work Paul ---Carol
Thanks again Carol for commenting, there are plenty of amazing channels out there both large and small offering a wide range of hints and tips to help in this great hobby. We all have to start somewhere and learn all aspects of how to do things. You’ll get there with your projects and have fun along the way. Paul
Looks fantastic great patience
Thank you Holybrooke. Paul
Another really informative video, thank you for taking the time to produce. Really enjoy following the construction of your layout, in particular the way you go about constructing buildings and structures.
Thanks so much Paul for the kind comments. Paul
Thank you so helpful
Wow Paul! Isn't it starting to really come to life now? Bet I am not the only one who actually held his breath as you pulled the making tape off the back of the first window!
Love the series so far it is giving me such inspiration to keep pressing on with my own layout.
Big thumbs up!
Thanks Mal, you were holding your breath? I didn’t breathe until the whole lot were done! 😂 I’m so pleased it ives you the desire to keep going with your layout, need to see some more progress there soon and a new toilet installed too. 😉 Paul
Got a few days leave now Paul so should be able to do a little more on the town scene, so will build the loo and at least find a site for it, pics will follow!
Brilliant Paul, those windows and doors take the build to a new level. Not sure how my ham fisted fingers are going to cope with that plastruct though!
Cheers Steve
Haha, told you you’d look forward to this update Steve. Just take your time, the masking tape is a real help in aligning the frames up. As you can see I don’t get it right every time so don’t expect to yourself. Looking forward to the results. Paul

German firm Auhagen offers packs of injection molded plastic windows at a very reasonable price. They are labelled HO/TT and they are a tad on the small side but within the realms of possibility. You would need to trace/measure the windows to set the size for the opening but they are nicely detailed.
48 650 is a pack of about 70 6-pane windows with a few odd ones thrown in to about the same size, all suitable for 'cottages'. They come with 18 'shutters' so may be of use to continental modellers and wargamers.
48 551 is a pack of 'industrial windows' with a single pair of doors (32mm high and each 15mm wide) and a separate sprue of 'fittings' brackets and the like. There is also what I think is a corrugated iron awning, presumably to go with the brackets etc.
48 647 is a big pack of larger windows and some fittings (a through-the-wall fan for example)
Not expensive, a viable alternative to buying Dapol buildings just for the windows (the Dapol windows are a bit heavy and deep).
Cheers
Mike
I will certainly check those products out Mike, they may prove useful to have in the scraps box for future projects. Paul
Brilliant as ever Paul! Glad I only mess about with full size buildings!👍🏻
Haha PJ, you should give the miniature version a go. 😉 Paul
Looking amazing Paul. Love the rendering and the frames look fab.
Thanks Lewis, it’s getting there. 😉 Paul
The building is coming along beautifully Paul. Really like the 4-panel front door and the offset window on the extension- nice touches! Looking forward to the next episode.
Best, John
Thank you John, it’s hopefully the little details that will help set the whole thing off. Paul
May I wish you happy St Patrick’s day to you and your family and it seems very very fiddly but well worth the effort look forward to the next video ....:0)....Chris
Thank you Chris. First time I’ve been wish a happy St Paddy’s day too! 😂. Paul
Hi Paul. Amazing it is really looking great this is one of the best how to video that I have watched thanks for sharing with us. Regards George....
Thank you so much George for the kind comments. Really appreciated. Paul
Excellent skills and lots of patience on show there. Well done, looking fantastic..cheers
Thank you Chris. Paul
Frames look great, makes the building look brilliant.
Beginning to come to life now. Thanks for watching Greenhill. Paul
Great work Paul, an excellent build. Looking forward to the completion of the building. Cheers Greg
Thanks Greg, it’s getting close, only a few more episodes to go. 😂 Paul
Really love how you are doing this build Paul..... brilliant..... regards Fred.... ps even if one can’t see parts of a build it’s nice to know you’ve done ....👌
Ha Fred, this might sound odd to others but I’ve been playing with you this evening!! Thanks for the comments and yes your right, I know it’s there and it’s been done. Paul
Galgorm Hall .... that’ll get the CZcams Railway groups wondering 🤔
This is a fantastic job and videothank you for taking the time to share this with us and I look forward to seeing you next video update
Thanks Billy, appreciate the support as always. Paul
You are welcome Paul
Excellent how to video Pau I've been following your scratch build It really is coming together now i liked how you made the window and doors I will have to give it a try when I do my next build I think that is great that you kept the mistakes it shows people new to the hobby that even the best make mistakes and not to be scared to give scratch building a try . Thanks for sharing look forward to next week's instalment.. Pete
Thanks Pete. I think you’re right, a few mistakes shows everyone is susceptible to doing them and it shouldn’t put you off. Paul
Well done! Very meticulous work at a great level. 👍
Thanks Anthony. Paul
Great video good looking Windows keep up the great videos
Thanks Roger, a fiddly job but well worth it. Paul
Excellent vid Paul, the frames and doors really make the house look nice but it certainly looks a fiddly job.
Some good tips for possible future scratch builds :-)
Cheers Paul
Thanks Paul, it is fiddly but rewarding and you also get in to the swing of it the more you do. Paul
40thou (40 thousands of an inch) is near enough 1mm (3 inches in 00), hence 30 thou is 0.75mm. I use Slaters Plastikard and 'microstrip' myself as it is (here) cheaper than plastruct. Nice building.
Thanks Mike. Paul
Loving it Paul, ....David.
Thanks David. Paul
Looks good Paul, nice cheap alternative to buying the wills parts Andy
Hi Andy, it’s certainly a lot cheaper than Wills albeit it doesn’t give the same detail. If I’d had more time I’d have got some laser cut ones made but this will suffice for this build. Paul
The build really is progressing and the windows and doors look very good. I hope you won't mind me saying this, but it was good to see the Plastruct gods pick on someone else occasionally when one is trying to trim to the correct length with very fine tolerances. I think this might be part of the build that I would adapt for N Gauge by using either brass etch or laser cut windows and doors. I have constructed door frames and lintels though, but it is very fiddly work. When I get around to this I will see what sizes I am dealing with. Stephen
The plastruct gods were not being kind to me on this evening Stephen. I shudder to think of the fiddly aspect of constructing this in N gauge. More power to you. The prototype did have more intricate window frames than I could produce, with more time I’d have got some laser cut and produced but it just wasn’t feasible. I also wanted to show people what could be done to form a basic window from strips. Thanks as always for following the progress. Paul
Nice detailing. I should think working around the camera doesn't help with accurate measurement. Thought we were going to get blood, as well as warts and all, when you went to stab that cross bar on your finger! ;-)
I really need to reposition my camera for this sort of work Davie, it does get in the way sometimes when working. Health and safety would have a field day with my knife wielding antics. Paul
Enjoying watching back through these videos! Where can you source the plastruct in the UK? Did you get yours from a local modelling shop? Many thanks
Hi TTL, thank you for taking the one to watch. Plastruct can be bought from most good hobby suppliers. I have two model shops within a 30 mile radius of me and both are well supplied. I’ve seen the materials provided in dedicated model shops as well as more general arts and crafts supplies shops so well worth looking around. If all else fails you will have plenty of success picking the materials up online albeit with the usual P+P premium added to the order. Paul
Galgorm Hall many thanks for the reply Paul. I shall look out next time I’m in my local model shop 👍🏻
Think you'll find that 0.30 is about one third of a millimetre. Beautiful workmanship. 👴🏻
Thanks David, you’re right. Thought that afterwards when the calculations finally kicked in. 😂 Paul
