  • The March update concentrates on two aspects of the model railway, some reorganising of the loft for railway storage and a discussion on close coupling of coaches. I also briefly show you some work done on the Wills house kit and the start of a new bridge build. There is also a special guest visiting the layout and you can find details of his channel at the bottom of this page.
    Thank you all for watching and i hope you enjoy it

    What a great update Paul, I just loved your compilation of Fred's visit to Galgorm Hall, very well put together, well done. In fact the whole video was a joy to watch. It's nice to see some more progress and that you have finally finished your cottage. I wouldn't have the patience to spend all that time, just building one building, so fair play to you for the finished result, it looks great. Lastly, thank you for your support in my new venture of building Tram Junction, much appreciated.
    Kindest reagards

      Thank you Geoff, making Fred’s movie was a bit of fun and something different to share. He may be on future travels so watch out for him. As to that cottage, not quite finished yet, more details to add but it’s getting there. As to your venture, I’m really looking forward to it’s progress as I do with any new builds I follow. Paul

    Nice video Paul. One thought about the close couplings - I use them on my Yarslow layout (see the Yarslow channel) and they look great but I would fit them AFTER weathering and populating the coaches because getting the rakes apart and back together is a total pain!! The less you have to do that the better. If I do need to work on a coach, I have to lay the whole train down and use a length of thin foam to avoid damaging the coach sides.

    • @GalgormHall
      @GalgormHall  Před 5 lety

      Thanks, it’s a fair point. At the rate I work and the tasks I have to do I suspect populating coaches and weathering them will be some way down the line. 😂 Paul

    • @bionicgeekgrrl
      @bionicgeekgrrl Před 4 lety

      You can to some extent avoid this problem by gripping with some thin pliars and pulling the coach away with a little force. Bachmann use similar couplings on their dmu and emu stock, which has the lighting/dcc contacts in it.

    Good idea with the storage area, I also over looked doing one at the beginning - thinking I'd just store trains around the layout.. should be good once done.

    • @GalgormHall
      @GalgormHall  Před 5 lety

      I had the same thoughts as you, trains would just park on the layout. It soon becomes apparent that a double main line and one branch does not lend itself to much storage. Hindsight is a wonderful thing! Paul

    Very enjoyable update Paul. The new bridge will look good once you have worked your magic on it. The extra stage space will help you quite a bit particularly. I am going to look at options for close coupling of my coaches. Dapol provide plastic easy shunt style, and rather like the Bachman vacuum pipe couplers, I never get them out of the packet. Stephen

    • @GalgormHall
      @GalgormHall  Před 5 lety

      Thanks Stephen, I think I’ve changed tact again on the bridge back to an earlier thought with the use of girder sides. Still mulling that one over. I’d definitely encourage the close coupling if only from a more aesthetically pleasing point of view. Paul

    Great update Paul, love the look of that close coupling if you have the room to store fixed rakes. With you on the reorganising as well, I seem to be continually doing that in the garage to make room for my fledgling layout, even to the extent of having a list of where everything is stored. Except whenever I am looking for something it is not on the list, c'est la vie!

    Great update Paul, regards to the Kadees on the Blue Grey coaches. They foul because the pockets are too high, that is why the tension locks are stepped down. What you need to do is replace the NEM pockets using the Keen System then you can use the NEM Kadees. Hope that helps.

    Very good update Paul. I like your methodical approach to building things like the branchline bridge. Great visitor segment, I think I shall have to have a visit with Fred, but he just wont get a passport so I guess I'll have to use mine. Thank you for explaining that Kadee produces a wide range of couplers that fit almost any application. The Kadee No. 5 you showed glued to the bogie is now un-serviceable whereas had you screwed it on it would be easy to remove and add shims in the event of sagging etc. I would like more information on the replacement wheels for the DMU.

      David, I did consider screwing the No.5 to the bogie but purchase for the screw was limiting. If repair work is needed I may prise it off and replace with another. Great update Paul, I brought the Bachmann class 20 departmental carriage set, which came with a standard circle of track fitted the vacuum pipe fittings, which too my surprise operated with no problems! The houses roof I built the same kit a good few years ago, had same problem using the template provided for the extension, I belief this is the heart of the problem, the angles are slightly wrong so nothing sits right.

    Interesting bit on the close coupling, I haven't touched the Kadees for a while and hadn't tried them on coaches yet. The vacuum pipe connection is great, never tried that either but certainly will. If you remember I was struggling with my coaches uncoupling on the helix. I'll try this fix see if it works and if the coaches go around the bends okay.
    Nice new dmu, looks much better with the no.5 fitted than those big couplings.

      Worst thing is I have a feeling I got a comment about the bachmann coupling on my video, don't know why I didn't do it, although my memory at the moment is awful. I need to make a list of jobs to do. I'm actually wondering if one problem might be the coaches were second hand and maybe didn't have the fitting in the box anymore....

    hi paul
    just an idea for you when fitting the extention roofs
    this is what i have done on the few i have done if you put a straigh edge cut to the length of the extention from a scrap of plasticard from the tip of the extention gable to the main roof making sure that edge straight edge is looking plum and straight and center to the main roof and mark where it is hits the main roof then measure from the orignal roof base up to the mark at both sides and you should then have the correct angle to mark on the slates to cut and you could then sand the inside of the angles to about 45 degree angle and this should help the roof to sit closer to the original roof and then you could add led flashings to the valleys where the roofs meet i have seen tinfoil been used for this but i have not got that far yet i hope i have made myself clear and that it might help you in future builds
    regards
    james

    That semi detached house looks great. If your not happy with it, you should see my roof and I’m sure you will feel much better! The Branchline bridge is looking great already. Stepping over things and having hobby items on the floor is something that is also getting on my nerves. Given the space on your layout right of your town scene, it is perfect to use that space on top of the tank for a fiddle yard. Is there a way to have it connected at both ends to allow run around in a continuous loop or will it be a dead end? Beautiful running video and that music I loved. The close coupling looks great. A great update Paul. Clint

    • @GalgormHall
      @GalgormHall  Před 5 lety

      Thanks Clint, I’ve looked at a full loop to bring it back to the line but access is next to impossible with current storage and that water tank. It’s maybe something I can look at in the future but for the time being it will be a dead end with trains reversed back out. First step, get the trains a location to park off scene and then maybe look at further options. I’ve seen your house build, it’s looking really good, just needs a drop of paint applied. 😝 Paul

  • @garyhodge7861
    @garyhodge7861 Před 5 lety

    Have you considered including a reversing loop in the storage area, it looks like you have adequate space and it will give the option of turning a train should you want to?
    I have many, too many, of the older style tension lock couplings in fixed rakes. I was planning to cut them off as you have done with the DMU and replace them with NEM pockets and then whichever close coupling system is economic. Is there a reason why you chose Kadees for the DMU?

    • @GalgormHall
      @GalgormHall  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for the comments Gary. There is space for a return loop but the main issue is access to build the boards and reach any derailments etc when a problem arises. It’s something I may look at in the future and this storage could be modified to include it if I can work out how to do it. As to those couplings, having seen Kadees in use on Sam at Hillside Central I started looking at it for all my stock. They are versatile, reliable and most importantly offer a wide range of options in different designs all of which can be used with each other. The DMUs are unlikely to be fixed to other stock but I the off chance I wanted to replicate a broken down unit being towed by a diesel loco I have set it up to allow me to connect with no problems. Paul
