Scratch Building with Styrene - Tools & Techniques

- Building models from scratch can be difficult… but with a bit of practice and some patience you’ll be surprised how easy it is to build something that you’ll be proud of!
Styrene is usually the material of choice for a lot of modelers who scratch build models however you can use all sorts of materials like balsa wood, bass wood, different types of plastic, paper and even recycled material from around the house.
In this tutorial I’ll step you through the process of building a simple railway station in HO Scale using some very useful tools and very basic techniques, there’s nothing fancy being done here just yet… Although having the right tools does make the job much easier.
Nearly all of the tools I used in the video were at one point or another purchased from Micro-Mark, the main ones I use are:
‘Duplicate-It’
‘Chop-It’
5/16th Corner Punch
Airbrush Moisture Trap
Bachmann Adjustable Magnetic Clamps
To name a few, if you too would like to use the same tools I do and you plan to buy them at Micro-Mark.com don’t forget you can get 10% off the purchase price by using the promo code ‘boulder’.
For more information about building with styrene and more specific plans on building this exact structure be sure to check out:

"Some" patience....and a bloody steady hand! lol
lol, I usually brace my hands on the table for the really delicate parts... Sometimes when I start to get tired my hands shake all over the place and I need to stop for a while!
hmm.. I give 'thumb up' for ur detail! surely, it needs 'some' patience wkkwkw... buttt.. it's normal!
Hello, fellow wkwkwk army.
*_LOL_*
yep Patience things that I don't have.
dont take it wrong but i like to see this to sleep. not because is boring it because its relaxing
lol I totally understand 😀 I do the same thing with some other great channels
G hunter 093 same
I do the same thing! Helps me in vision my layout more!
G hunter 093 that's me with Bob ross
I'd take that as a huge compliment. It means its relaxing and "friendly"
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, tips and advice for making miniature models. I am beginning my journey down the rabbit hole which is n-scale. I was impressed by all the tiny details (downspouts, etc.) you added to your model...and was shocked at how tiny the same details are in n-scale 😲...I may need a microscope, ha-ha. You are very good at what you do, and set a very high bar that I can only dream of coming close to. Thank you again.
I have no interest in making models but I can't help but watch every video you put out, fantastic quality and detail week after week, keep it up mate
wow thanks mate, really glad you enjoy watching 😀
Your patience, attention to detail and tool implementation is what i strive for in my daily life. Seriously your work area is mesmerizing!
Holly crap... I happened to come across your channel... I kinda knew stuff like this existed but Holly Crap, the detail work is mind blowing... I love it... well edited, not too long... watching these videos are like taking a small ZEN vacation from my day... I'm soooo impressed...
I find this so amazing. Wonderful Job Luke. I have a great appreciation for people who love their craft.
thanks mate, glad you enjoyed watching 😀
I watch all your videos over and over, and each time I watch, I’m still amazed with your work. I doubt a real surgeon has as steady a hand as yours, or the attention to detail. I could watch you work all day long. Brilliant stuff.
Came across this channel by accident ... Now completely addicted ! ...Fantastic.
Yeah Luke! Very satisfying build with all of those perfect lines snapping together. Can't wait for the interior video 😊😊
I love the way you explain why as well as how. Wonderful!
I wish the guys who built my house paid as much attention to detail and precision as Luke does
Ha ha 😂😁
Same with mine but mine is a nearly 150 year old Victorian mill workers house
Awesome stuff! I've been designing/building bass wood houses in 1/48 scale for about six months now, and I've learned so much from you.
Old post that I had missed... love seeing your methodical way to go about your projects. Might not be the fastest way but every step is deliberate and intentional. The results speak for themselves.
Luke,
You have once again smashed it out of the park! Your modesty about your skill level is amazing. Fantastic!👍😉
Love your videos. They are clean and peaceful. And spectacular results, of course.
Thanks for sharing your work and knowledge
I have been building and using styrene sheets for about 5 years, and you just showed me a ton of new ways to use the sheets on small applications! Stellar work. Thank you for the video.
Your patience and skill amaze me every time. And you're very inspiring, this is like therapy to me, very calming!
Holy wow! Your attention to detail is astounding. I’m not into model railroad but I do love to watch skilled crafters and realistic diorama builds, so I LOVE your channel.
The level of detail on this is incredible, but what amazes me the most is how steady your hands are!
you have said patience was the key and you are not wrong, a very good tutorial, thankyou
lol thanks Jed 😀

Always amazing. I know I’ll never do these but I just love watching them!
I find it absolutely incomprehensible that somehow this video managed to garner 76 dislikes. You’ve put together a gorgeous model while showing us exactly how you did it and at the same time showcasing your skill and techniques with the viewers. Your videos are always tremendously inspirational and I have yet to see one where I haven’t learned something new. Keep up the good work, I always look forward to what you come up with next!
Luke, I really enjoy watching your videos very much. It gives me great pleasure watching you build these miniatures making it look so easy. Great work Luke.
Great video - really like the graphics you're using to show when you have the angles correct. Can't wait for the next one.
I know this is an old video but this is one of my favourites! Your attention to detail, all the beautiful things you make and the fact that your videos are both educational, interesting and also calming at the same time is why you’re on of my favourites on CZcams. It jus wonderful to see you create your tiny world 😍👏🏼
I always love the way you shoot the videos. Light is great, colors are looking great. Pure pleasure for the eye.
Great video, thank you. Nice idea to make the paper mockups too. I can imagine that saving a lot of time and materials by avoiding mistakes.
I've been watching a lot of your videos and I have to say, you have the patience of a saint. Hope to be a great model builder like you someday!
Wow, that is some crazy detail, Luke! Well done!
Brilliant as always Luke, super detail! The finished product looks awesome! Cheers, Dan
Top work Luke. Looks great. I have tried building this way years ago and made a balls of it! You've inspired me to try again! Definitley going to get one of those straight edge cutter clamps. Thanks and best wishes from the UK.
I get so excited when I see Luke has posted a new video! This one was great and I can't wait for the follow up regarding the detail, lighting, etc.

Excellent tutorial! I got a lot of good ideas watching this. Thanks for sharing this.
I'm a fellow Hobbyist/modeler and upon watching your videos, I suddenly realized that I still have a lot to learn.... Great content man! I can't believe those dislikers really......
Luke, your videos are the best! Congratulations for your dedication and patience!
thanks mate, glad you like them
That is seriously nice, and just simple enough, where someone who's never scratchbuilt anything, may look at that and think... "Hey! I could give this a go!!!" And that's something of real value in our Hobby! I'm better at doing, than teaching! 😝
I show YOUR videos to younger friends as my surrogate teacher!!
Thanks, Carmine 🚂
Amazing work and tutorial. Thanks for sharing this. Learning a lot with you!
Building my first (second attempt) ho scale layout. Man, you inspire me
Yes! New video. Just the right thing to unwind after a long day with a beer and a great build! Cheers, mate.
thanks for the fantastic compliment, I'm glad you enjoy watching... beer sounds good 😉
Thanx Luke. My fave part of the hobby, building buildings.
Thanks Bill, I haven't build that many scratch built buildings but it's so rewarding once you finish!
I peeled the veneer off a chunk of good quality plywood. Its been sitting outside for 10 years or so. Looks like the real Mcoy... well, it IS the real Mcoy. lol --- Mother nature knows how to do weathering. Gonna try to make a N gauge barn with it. If that goes well, I got enough to make a whole town. Question is... Will it scale down right? I'll use some of your tutorial to build the basic frame and then glue thin strips of this veneer to that. Thanx for the video. I just might have to build me one of them doo-hickys. :-)
Excellent tutorial. Your work is always wonderful to watch
Simply awesome craftmanship.
Great realistic work
Patience, talent, steady hand and cracking eyesight. You have it all. Simply amazing work.
thanks mate 😀
Luke, I love your videos and all you do. My girlfriend and I love everything about you. Please never stop making videos man!
Thank you for this tutorial. This will definitely help me when I get my layout up and running. I have friends in the hobby who are big into scratch building, this will definitely be a big help. Thank you!!
2020 gang 🥳 wooo
This is so relaxing and pleasing to watch!
What I love about this is he is not showing off actually admitting that he has failed and explains how he successfully achieved after that . That is awesome. Gives you hope that if you work hard may be you can be something.
Looking forward to future work on this model! :)
Your patience and skill is absolutely inspirational, Luke. Another great video :)
thanks Luke, glad you're enjoying the videos 😀
absolutely stunning model
Holy smokes!!! you have some amazing skills creating such realistic looking models and dioramas. I've watched so many of your videos and I'm always completely amazed. Your like a surgeon with such steady hands. My builds look like they went through a southern California earthquake...shaky hands, LOL... You are a true artist, keep up the great work.
Thanks again for sharing your artistry. Such a great help.
thanks mate 😀
Your attention to detail is mind boggling and exquisite!
Thank you! 😊

Greetings from USA! Beautiful work again!
Best video ive seen so far on youtube in 2017.....a real craftsman
Hi Luke, my wife says that I have the patience of a saint when it comes to building my OO scale model railway. You take the whole modelling aspect to another level, way beyond my current belief in myself. However, having seen a number of your tutorials now, I am so inspired to take on the more detailed challenges. I showed my wife this tutorial and now according to her, I am not so awesome, butyou are!!! Cheers, Rick the Bulldog
Great video! I am speechless. So much attention to the details, so thoroughly worked....wow. Thanks for sharing your craft sir, it is really inspiring.

Nice tutorial Luke, always a pleasure to watch. I love your added details which are so often missing
Thanks mate, I have a bunch more detail that I'll be adding but I'll be using a photo etching machine so I thought that would be best as a separate video.
Stunning as ever, Luke!
What a fantastic instructional video. More please.
Another amazing tutorial! I love watching your videos.
thanks mate
Great video Luke, may try this on my O scale layout.

We need a studio tour ! I’d love to see your hobby room and all the supplies and how they’re used !
Brilliant, as always, Luke! Well done!!!
Thanks John, glad you enjoyed this one 😀
Can't wait to start! I have been scratch building some gond loads, and some construction paneling type walls, but nothing with styrene
Nice little cottage. I make corrugated aluminium roofing for my buildings and then form ridge capping as well. Gives a more authentic 'lived in' look. ;-)
nice 😀 I too make a lot of my own corrugated iron, there's no denying that it makes buildings look super realistic!
I feel like it's been years since I've watched this vid, ur amazing !!
I thought the one at the very end was a picture of the original house, and I was waiting for it to switch to the model. That's some amazing work!
fantastic work, steady hands, eye for detail!
Excellent and clear tutorial
Luke, you're simply the best!!!
