Can you grow a human bone outside the human body? The answer may soon be yes. Nina Tandon explores the possibility by examining how bones naturally grow inside the body, and illuminating how scientists are hoping to replicate that process in a lab.

I had an operation last year that used growth factor chemical to recruit my own bone stem cells to grow new bone in my mouth. It succeeded where bone transplant had failed 10 years before, when the technology hadn't made it through trials yet. Science is cool.

It know about that. In 2015 I was in a motorcycle accident. Miracles happen.
On March 12, 2015 I was in a head-on collision while in California on Spring Break. I had to be resuscitated two times during the ambulance ride and subsequent emergency surgery in the ER to address a ruptured kidney and other internal injuries. During this process I received multiple units of blood to keep me alive, I owe my life to many first responders but also to all of the blood donors, I needed 9 units. I was then placed into ICU with a Traumatic Brain Injury that left me in a coma, and had another surgery the next day to complete the removal of one kidney, it was demolished by a road sign. They also checked for additional internal injuries. Again, I utilized blood as part of the process over the next several weeks in ICU. My brain continued to swell and I had multiple mini-strokes so I had to undergo another surgery to remove part of my skull to prevent the swelling from ending my life. Again, blood was required during this surgery as well as later during another surgery to repair a broken vertebra in my back, replace my skull bone, remove it again to address an infection and then replace it. The really amazing thing is that I was bleeding out on the asphalt until the ambulance got there. There are plethoras of additional stories of what I’ve been through but I just choose not to relive those moments. I make memories everyday. Join me in this wonderful life.
Without the blood products made available via donations, I would not be alive today to continue my rehabilitation journey as I have relearned how to swallow, speak twice, walk and all the other things most people take for granted.

How do they replace all the blood vessels and nerves in the grown bone? Would the grown bone have its own network and doctor would have to find a way to match them with the patients network setup? Or is the vessels and nerves kind of like a channel the the human body would self repair and grow new outer vessels to connect to the bone?

I was also curious, and found that in 2019 phase 1 of the trials was finally given clearance by the FDA, and the trials are estimated to begin this month (March 2020). Sadly things like this take a lot of time, and the study isn't even estimated to conclude until 2022, so it'll be a long while before it can be used in practice, assuming the trial is successful.

I can imagine growing a bone underneath your skin, Doctors could then remove implanted bone after fast growth and cut the bone and use it to repair a damaged bone by implanting new bone into old bones so patient can be totally healed. New bone would grow fast onto old bone. The trick is to grow tendons on the new bone so they can be used for leg repairs.
