Conversion of my Comet Knee Mill to a Centroid Controller

  • A few years ago I purchased this Comet Knee Milling Machine from a scrap dealer in Arizona. At the time, it had a Fanuc M10 controller dating from 1986. Although I managed to get the controller working, someone had removed the back up batteries and lost all the parameters on the machine. I then decided to scrap the M 10 control and I purchased a Centroid allinone controller. I did all the wiring and installation myself and I have been very happy with the results. Initially I ran the machine with Mach3, but as time went on it became very unstable and I recently changed the operating system to Centroids CN11 operating on an Intel NUC computer and Windows 10. This eliminates the fear of an unprotected system on my Wi Fi and allows me to access files on my network. I'm very pleased with the results. Enjoy.
Next project is the conversion of my DM3000 lathe to a Centroid Acorn Control complete with new Clearpath Servo Motors.

Great interview and presentation by Marty & my cousin Dan! This CNC project was one of Dan's biggest retrofitting projects, if not the biggest! I was fortunate to have a demonstration of this great machine when I visited him in April this year. As he so fittingly says "It's a Beautiful Thing!!" Nice to hear his wife helped out initially cleaning it up!

Does that mean I can ditch my rotary phase converter for an VFD inverter? I have the centroid acorn powering my Bridgeport. I thought the vfd’s mess with the cnc operation? Or is that an old wives tale?
