@Berk Arslan Court Speed Change occurred in 2000 not after 2008. Federer wouldn't have won Wimbledon with faster courts of 90s. So don't be salty. Nadal still doesn't know how to play in faster conditions.

Read the reports first and then judge. It may look beautiful but was it safe for players to year after year participate on it. If you watched the highlights, you would see players slipping too much on it. There was even a mention by the people who made it that there were some unexpected side effects. The surface should have been thoroughly tested first in smaller tournaments and such first. Yes players can complain but that doesn’t mean that there was no merit to it. A few mentioned that the surface might as well be grass and needed their grass court sneakers for it.
Furthermore the surface might as well be a warmup for Wimbledon if that were the case. Which would mean it should be played after the French, not before.

@@JiraiyaSama86 Madrid's clay was always suspect. Players complained about it from the advent of the switch to clay. Had they remedied the clay consistency/quality so that the tournament played more like the rest of the Spring Clay swing first, the switch to blue clay would have been inconsequential, and maybe even celebrated. The tournament organizers jumped the gun, unfortunately.

I actually remember that match very well. Was way back when Madrid was towards the end of the year. Was indoors if I’m not mistaken. Anyway Ivan had the match but somehow collapsed mentally it seems, and found a way to lose. That’s how I remember it anyway. Still fair play to Rafa as he hung in there and got it in the end.
