Hi-hat FIX! I have seen a few tutorials that show you how to do this, but they all seemed pretty confusing. Here, I show you the simplest way to trigger Logic Pro X drum samples using the Roland V-Drum module. (THIS ALSO FIXES THE HIGH-HAT PROBLEM!).
Mate, you just solved all of my drum recording problems in one video! You're a star!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I have been working on this for hours and I finally listened to your video that appeared at the right moment and everything works for me and my partner! thank you thank you thank you!!!
Fanny Gauthier No prob!
Perfect - so concise and works great. Much simpler than other videos which seemed to suggest needing lots of setup in TD17 module. This works fine - love the second option - just the recording flexibility I was looking for.
Do you know if this will work on FL Studio?
Thanks for the tutorial. I wasn't getting the ability to change to vdrums in the settings, I had to enable advanced features in the logic Pro settings. Now the dual zones work 👍
You’ve started me on my drumming journey. As a songwriter who prefers keeping this down I now feel confident in recording drum tracks to my other parts. Thank you so much friend! 🖤
Hello friend, one question @forthesakeofwhat?
When I try to change the input mapping from GM to V-drums the tiny bottom on the bottom left doesn’t show up.
Any suggestions?
Much appreciated (:
This video was a lifesaver for me! Watched a bunch of other drum videos that were too complex, as I just wanted to be able to record basic electronic drums to pre-pro my music. Thank you so much
Selecting the vdrums from the drop down helped immensely, esp since my BOW triggers on the HH and CYM weren't working. Thank you for that.
Just ordered my Roland TD-07DMK's and I was worried about this part of the process making my life difficult and it looks like it's pretty much plug and play. I love Logic so much. 😂 ... thanks for the video.. definitely calmed my anxiety on this one. No more fiddling with the Drummer program, auditioning fills, beats etc, then tweaking for hours on end in the midi trying to humanize and get fills exactly what I want. Now I get to just play the damn stuff and leave it like a real drummer would play.
hero! I couldn't believe playing VDrums in MacOS was so hard!! Thank you so much!
Thanks mate - the setting for V-Drums solved a frustrating issue with my hi-hat sound.
I've got an older TD6 with the 5pin midi I'll have to convert to USB. I bought the Roland adapter and now I just need to give it a shot. Appreciate your help!
Great tutorial! Thank you. Good too know that LOGIC PRO X has V-Drums covered.
Thx, FTSOW, just what I have been looking for!, hope you also have fun doing this and in some odd way, can make it worth your while.
Thanks a bunch for the input mapping trick, I was rather disappointed with hihat closing and opening not working properly and thought it was a limitation of MIDI!
my pedal hihat isnt working. It works on the kit itself but when its recording midi it doesnt open or close the hihat when i step on it.
2 years later, did anyone get a solution to this?
Thanks man! That was a great simple little tutorial. Exactly what I was looking for!
Sorted.Easy to follow guide after watching all the confusing ones.Cheers
Thank you, thank you! Very useful. Especially your revelation that the Drum Kit Designer is accessed for Producer Kits from the Overhead channel! I could not find this out from the online Apple support docs or from Logic's help pages..
Great video... I am about to buy my first electric kit and this has just answered all my questions thank you
Love peace and bliss divine being, amazing break down... Thank you
And how to record each individual element of the kit in one audio track? I would like to have ir as if it was a acoustic kit . Is it possbile to do?
Check out my other video for this: czcams.com/video/m-VNljcQNxg/video.html&t=
Many thanks dude, that's what I was looking for!
dietnam Excellent!
THX for the video!
Have tried, remember to install drivers downloaded from Roland.
great video! My issue is I want to adjust the hi-hat. When closed, it's still too open. How to I adjust it to sound tight in logic?
Thanks for this one. Can you do a v-drum tutorial for some of the Kontakt drum libraries out there? One for Kontakt as a stand-alone (jamming, etc) and one with Kontakt loaded in Logic Pro X. Curious about latency, and general tracking against those libraries.
Thanks for the video! Can you save it to where you don’t have to do this every time you plug your midi cable from the Edrums into Logic Pro? Or do you have to do this process every time?
Hi!
I just bought a Yamaha DTX 562 K and I'm having trouble with the Hi Hat. I've already changed the Input Mapping to V-Drum and still the Hi Hat doesn't sound right.
Any ideia what could be happening?
Great video by the way!!
Cheers
This was very helpful but I can’t hear the hi hat at all. I only hear it when I choke the cymbal. I use the Alesis strike pro SE
my issue is my snare is picked up as a tom!
The hi hat only triggers a half open sample instead of the closed sample (when hi hat pedal is pressed down) when you select the V drums setting. I noticed this happened in your video too. Is there a way to get the closed sample back when you use the V drum setting? This has been driving me nuts!
Did you ever figure it out?
Was anyone able to work this out?
when you change the input mapping to v-drums it fixes the hi hat but it also makes it so that tom 2 and 3 trigger the same sound
If you switch to the custom control bar (where playhead position, tempo, etc. go on top of the screen) to show MIDI notes you'll see the 2 toms send different notes. I'm not sure where the mapping between MIDI notes and sounds is, but hopefully someone else reading this knows :)
Thanks dude 👊🔥 very useful information
Thanks a lot for this cool tutorial !
I will try this on my new TD-17kv
Fantastic help... one problem. tuning the two low toms. they won't differentiate- they keep the same tone no matter how I adjust. Sorry if you explained this already. Using TD-1 DMK and Logic.
This was a huge help!!! Thanks for sharing!!!!
Nice short practical video! thx dude!
what about older models without USB but midi in and out?
You would have to buy an audio interface with a midi connection.
How do I get the SPLASH + Ride Cymbal + Bell FROM "Ride Cymbal"? How do I get the 3 hihat sounds: closed/open/edge splash? How do I get the other cymbals edge + top ride? Even with the PRODUCER KIT: "SoCal+". these additional sounds aren't coming through despite selecting V-Drums for internal mapping. Hi-hat = OPEN only.
Many thanks for this great tutorial, it has been a great motivator
QUESTION: for some reason, logic doesn't play back/record notes from the edge or rim of my cy-5 hi hat trigger pad (but they do pick up/record notes played on the middle area) when struck and they don't record, but they sound at the time of recording and show up as dots on the track, but weirdly, they don't get recorded and don't play back.. how can I fix this? could it be the sensor in the edge is damaged after years of use? it still makes the sound though, or maybe it's being picked up by the middle area sensor?
Thanks for the tutorial. I'm wondering how I can use the sounds coming from my TD30 and be able to map them with logic. Or if there is way to record actual waveform audio from my Roland using a midi cable. Thanks.
Awesome been searching for this for almost a year now.
Producer kits are awesome
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Finally it works...!
Thanks so much bud! The SoCal+ tip is killer! :-)
ya just sorted my v drums problem out - cheers fella
THNAKS MAN ! very helpful! great video :)
thanks for the nice straight forward instructions mate , do you know whether using a Roland TD9 brain would be as easy especially on the hi hat opening and closing.??? cheers
can't separate the mid and low tom tone. using Vdrums td-1. also can't get bell sound on ride. everything else works. using logic pro X
Hi! Thx for the video! But i have missing button, where you click on your video at 2:54... I have 10.6 Logic Pro...
Same! and my HH is freaking out!
Russell Jackson have you done with this? I cant yet :/
I want to ensure that it works for most roland v-drum module? For example, TD17?
I know this is a pretty old video, but if anyone can help with a question it would be greatly appreciated.
I can do everything that is explained in the video no problem, however I am having an issue with how logic is picking up my strikes when recording. An example is when I do a drag roll, only 2 strikes will be picked up by logic in the recording, however I hear the proper sound come through my headphones.
Its extremely frustrating and any help would be welcome.
did you ever figure it out? definitely a lag time for me
Hey buddy!
That’s a great video - ta😉 would you always choose the Logic sounds over day TD17 sounds? Thinking I may bring my Mac to gigs if so. Ta
How well do you feel the drums on Logic Pro X play on an electronic kit? How is the dynamic range? Also, I've heard because the cymbals are only one zone, you can't hit the edge of them, only the top. Is there any way to fix this and is it annoying?
So I have a Roland TD 1k and there is no driver for this does this mean that It won't let me connect through MIdi? if that is true what is the sense of even having a midi port!? Please help I messaged you on Instagram
What if it’s a td4 which has no USB port?
Wonderful video my friend! Thank you for making this easy. I'm just at the cusp of getting into the VST's and being a GarageBand guy I think logic will be my choice. Just a question, does logic allow you to tune the individual drums, etc?
Thank you man! works like a charm!
Hello
Thanks for your video, it helped me a lot.
I still could not get the sound of the hihat opening with the foot.
Would you know how to do it?
thank you again
Hello!
This has been very helpful, thanks so much!
A couple of questions, I am using the producer kit to allow me to edit and mix the separate drum tracks, but I would also like to have the crash and ride as separate tracks. Is there a way to do this and also how would I go about changing the instrument for a particular drum? For example, if I wanted my ride to sound like a bell?
Cheers,
Miles
Thanks man! I hate that with the producer kits you can’t modify the ride cymbal. I know you can on the drum kit interface, but you can’t add effects to it. Bummer!! Maybe you know of a good way? Would appreciate any tip.
This is a great video, thank you so much. But I still have one problem. I don't hear the sound of my snaredrum when I am in Logic Pro. I do hear the sound on the edge of the snare but that is all. I also do hear the rest of the drum kit. When I connect my kit to a speaker I do hear the snaredrum so that means that the snare itself is ok. Can you tell me what this problem could be??
BRILLIANT VIDEO!. THANKS SO MUCH.
Any tips for a really old set of vdrums? I have the td 4 unit and it doesn't have a usb out port, only midi. I have a midi to usb c cable but it is not plug and play lol
When I access the drum designer, that little triangle is not there for me to assign it to read the V-drums. Do you know how I may fix that?
Jay on the Drums I have the same problem.
We’re you able to figure it out?
great buddy! simple and very practical!
thank you, my issue is for some reason I can barely hear the audio of the drumset. What can I do?
the sound of "LOW TOM" and "MID TOM" are the same in VDRUM Input Mapping.... How to fix it?
PLS HELP. I got this. But when recording it does not record individually on each channel of drums?
don't see the options, only the drumset. plz help!
Does anyone know if the TD11 will work like this? I can’t get mine to be recognised by Logic…midi keyboard works fyi
how do I connect it to my current Macbook Air (only has USB-C inputs)
How can I use e drums to control 3rd party software? Like battery, etc…?
Great video, thank you so much for making it!
Thanks for this video!
please help... about to pull my hair out.
I have a td17 running into a Mac with logic pro x. Have followed all instructions and my mid and floor tom are exactly the same sound. also my right crash is a ride. anybhelp would be amazing.
thanks
excellent but i have a lag, is not the same sound with my touch, what can i do, thanks????
Hi. I have same hi hat issues (plus not triggering any sound when hitting bow on every cymbal pad) with my td-17 kvx and garageband on ipad pro 11. Does anyone has nice and smooth connection between Roland td 17 and garageband on ios (ipad os 13)?
Why my drums doesnt connect in my computer? Any output setup i need to change?
This was great , thanks
Thanks for this tutorial! I have a question. I went and selcted "V drums" instead om "GM" so now I can get every single part of the kit to work with the MIDI...BUT...the third tom has the exact same pitch as the second one. Now if I go in and detune the third one, the second one follows in pitch, which would mean that there ain´t THREE toms but TWO. How can I fix this problem?
Cheers, Birger
I'm not an expert, but review the trigger assignment, and if necessary, route the rogue trigger to a separate MIDI channel?
really helpful video, thank you very much!
why is there no menu in lower left for input mapping. Is it because i have trial version. going crazy here.
can you fix the high hat problem in garagband?
Having trouble with logic reading that my roland midi drumset is plugged in. It is midi cable to usb. Any ideas?
hello, prq when I put in v-drum mode, my tom 2 has the same sound as tom 3 and if I
want to change in the mapping is my hit hat malfunctioning? thank you
This is great, Thankyou, but for some reason it doesn’t give me the option of “drum kit” when fixing my vdrum hi hat issues.
If anyone in 2021 has any thoughts it would be appreciated.
You’re awesome. Thank you!!!
Hi, thanks for the video and congratulations.
I have a doubt, is possible to have the midi-off of the overheads in Logic Pro? How?
Thank you.
Hello friend, one question @forthesakeofwhat?
When I try to change the input mapping from GM to V-drums the tiny bottom on the bottom left doesn’t show up.
Any suggestions?
Much appreciated (:
Enable the advanced tools under Logic Pro X > Preferences
@@cerpss24 I fucking love you dude! Oh my gosh. You saved my soul!
Do you know how to change which midi signals are sent by each piece of the kit? I'd like to be able to map each piece to a specific note etc.
Thanks so much for the vid!
Hey! Did you find the answer? I really need some tips.
I'm running a Yamaha DD 65 into Logic and am going bonkers with a similar hi-hat issue. The Yamaha comes with a little foot switch to open/close the hi-hat. Works perfectly well with all 50 kits in hardware mode, but I can't get Logic to recognize it when I just send MIDI data with no voicing into Logic in order to play the SoCal kit, etc. Yamaha doesn't seem to offer any updated drivers for the DD 65. I've figured out how to map the individual pads in Logic, so that I can change different toms, snares, kick drums, etc., but not the hi-hat. Problem is, pushing down on the hi-hat pedal, it registers as a MIDI note. Striking the hi-hat pad on the unit that, in hardware mode, corresponds to this foot switch also registers as a MIDI note. But what about the 'open' setting on the hi-hat foot switch? Mapping in Logic, near as I can tell, allows you to assign only one MIDI note per pad--not something along the lines of "IF this foot-switch pad is NOT being stepped on, THEN this pad over here (hi-hat) should be MIDI note X; if this foot-switch pad IS being stepped on, then this pad over here (hi-hat) should be MIDI note Y." Maybe impossible to get the Yamaha DD 65 hi-hat properly set up in Logic without drivers?
Hi jgroover. I'm not familiar with the Yamaha kits so not sure how they integrate with Logic. Maybe email Yamaha's tech support for more specific advice on the issue? Apologies. FTSOW.
Thanks, man. Appreciate it!
Having the EXACT same problem with Alesis Nitro kit. This is a very frustrating bug.
Nick Sintos I talked to a Yamaha rep on the phone. He gave me a couple of phone numbers of businesses that specialize in upgrading and repairing Yamaha equipment. For the older DD65s (and this may be true of the your kit as well) a firmware upgrade apparently can fix the problem. Question for me is whether I want to pay somebody to work on a piece of equipment that sells on eBay now for about $100.
Nick Sintos Check out this vid also to see if it might work for you...

Great video.... very helpful. Thanks!!
You saved me! Thank you!
Thank you for this video, very cool ! I have td 15 vdrum, it works very good, but some kits, like so cal for example, the sound from the floor tom is the same as the medium tom... Very strange, because with an other kit, like vintage rock, it works. Did you have this problem ? Thanks
I want to buy an electric drumkit but not sure if i can connect it via usb to my mac and use it in Logic Pro X
Apparently it has the usb port and i think it would work as a midi Controller so i can put any sound on it and play. Of course i would use it with drum kit presets
So i should buy it or i need something else
Can you recommend a few v drum kit models? I’m looking to purchase my first kit. I mainly want to trigger all the new logic drummer kite in logic 10.5. Which kits do you think are worth purchasing? I prefer to buy used unless you do not recommend
Great video. I have a Roland TD-9, but I believe the USB port is for storage only. The manual says nothing about hooking it up to a computer. I noticed your module is not in the TD series. It simply says Roland V-Drums. I googled roland v-drums, but I don't see your particular module. Is there an exact model I can look for? ...and if I hooked your module up to my TD drum pads, would it be compatible?
Thanks!
Lawrence
Dude you are the man!!!
