The ABSOLUTE BEST way to do drums in Logic Pro X (10.5 UPDATE) | Drum Machine Designer Tutorial
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 17. 05. 2020
- IT'S. HERE.
The Logic Pro X 10.5 update is finally here and it has given us some amazing features, improving Logic Pro immensely. Amongst the new features are Live Loops, Multi-Sampler, Q-Sampler, a whole new workflow with Drum Machine Designer, a step sequencer, and tons of new stock drum kits and samples.
Today I'm going to be showing you my new workflow for making quick drum patterns in Logic Pro X 10.5. We're going to be using the new Drum Machine Designer by dragging and dropping samples from our All Files window, making an easy to use workflow and a much more intuitive way of doing drums in Logic. Finally, Apple has answered other DAWS like FL Studio and Ableton Live with a stock integrated step sequencer and sampler that are simple to use but extremely powerful.

What do you guys think of the new LPX 10.5 update?!
FAQS
_____
1.
Q: How do I change the 808 into mono?
A: If you go into the Q-Sampler you'll see a drop down under the "Amp" section called "polyphony". Click that and change it to mono.
2.
Q: How do I update to Logic Pro X 10.5?
A: Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner > go to App Store > Search "Logic Pro X" > click "Update". If you're computer is running too old of an OS it won't be able to update.
Tony Holiday I think itâs an incredible leap for Logic. I cannot say that Iâve ever seen a cooler and more well rounded DAW. IMO Itâs just taken the crown from several contenders. Wonderful content as well Tony. Thanks for elucidating the newest features. Iâm wondering if you can do a bass sequencing vid sometime soon? That would be excellent.
Could not agree more. Apple really took what was great about other DAWs and incorporated it into LPX, Iâm really pleased with everything that Iâm finding.
For the suggestion, you mean making basslines within the step sequencer? That could make a great video for sure. Thanks for the thoughtful comment and kind words. Cheers đ€
@@itstonyholiday tony when you are sidechaining instruments now does it still have to be in an audio file or can you keep as midi? thanks for the tutorial
I'm really loving the new update, especially the Quick Sampler
I was definitely the most needed as a plugin imo. Thanks for watching
It's so great, I came to learn about the DMD and learned just as much about things I didn't know I should've already been using! Honestly just you narrating a normal project would probably teach so many so much. Thank you sir.
I'm happy you found the content helpful! I always try to put in bits of information that I personally use or find interesting. I've thought about doing some long form project style videos before so maybe if there's enough interest I will do that. Thanks for watching + the comment Sean, cheers!
Your tutorials are detailed, thorough, and concise. They have served as a solid resource to solve problems that occur for me in my projects. Thanks, and great job!
Thanks for the kind words Tim, really appreciate you watching + the comment! Cheers
What a legend, i skipped a few updates and i'm getting back into logic, this video was a perfect refresher!
Thank you for watching! I really appreciate the comment.
I'm new to logic (and music production in general) and I just wanted to say this tutorial has helped me so much so thank you! I wish I found this a few days ago when I was trying to create my first beat but I'm still grateful for this vid
Really happy you found the content useful!
It's a process creating your first track for sure, but keep at it and you'll be making songs in no time.
Thanks for watching + the comment đ
your tutorials are straight to the point and no bull, just perfection and no time wasated
thank you for real
Thanks for watching + the comment, really appreciate it!
As a lifelong educator I can definitely say that your tutorial style, the way you edit these videos, what you choose to show, what you wisely leave out, your clarity . . . are all outstanding. Just enough, just the right stuff. A lot of people make a lot of videos for Logic. These are some of the absolute best I have ever seen. Thank you for taking the time and sharing.
Wow, David. Thank you so much for the kind words, I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. Teaching is something I never did before CZcams but I really enjoy it now that I've found a good system for how to present my thoughts and practices.
It's comments like these that really keep me motivated and want to keep making content. Thanks again, Happy Holidays to you and yours!
i second that!!
Iâm interested in hearing your thoughts on Spliceâs beatmaker. I like itâs interface but when I drop a beat loop or drum sample in the simple sampler I can tell it doesnât reduce the quality of the kick sample.

This is an unbelievably good upgrade, and a fantastic explanation of the new features!

I must say this is the best tutorial you done bro...u took ur time for the starter to the experienced. perfect teaching speed.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching.
The last 5-6 minutes of this video gave me a complete roadmap to replacing my redoubtable Arturia Drumbrute. The Drum Machine Designer is a miracle. Thanks for getting this out there. Love this.
Thank you for watching + the comment! Really happy that you found the content useful.
@@itstonyholiday Well, I regret to say that I started in on Logic to do this process (I have 10.7.1) and Drum Machine Designer no longer exists. There are several videos on CZcams describing obsolete content now as a result. The drum capabilities in 10.7.x bear no resemblance to those shown in your video, and it looks like it's been severely dumbed down to look more like GarageBand's drum configurations. Drag & Drop is gone, the 32-step patterning is gone, and the DMD interface is gone. Looks like this content needs to be revisited. I'm a neophyte six months in so take this with a grain of salt. I think they canned DMD in the 10.7 release. I will use the step sequencer while I continue to climb the learning curve :) EDIT: I WAS TOTALLY WRONG! :D
@@fireworks_music Interesting... I still use it everyday the way the I describe in the video
â@@itstonyholiday Clearly then, I'm missing something. Best possible outcome then, no problem. I took another careful look and solved the issue. I'm on a massive learning curve. Thank you!!! Grabbing your drum audio samples from your site too. Good stuff man thanks for your help :)
@@fireworks_music Nice! Happy to hear you solved it. What was the issue? Maybe others are having it too and can learn from your comment.
Cheers!
very well explained my friend!! thank u very much !! greatings from italy!
Thank you for the kind words!! Absolutely love Italy was there in 2012... canât wait to go back. Glad you liked the content đ
Thanks. Just by watching your lpx videos I have gotten really far on this new lpx trial. Much faster than i got anything done in ableton. You made it easy for me to just open this program & use it. Keep it coming!
Really happy that you found the content helpful! Thank you for watching, there will be more to come đ
Okay so you're like stupidly good looking. And you're an incredible music production teacher, the best on CZcams in my opinion!
Too kind. Iâm just happy you found the content useful đ more videos to come. Thank you for watching!
Like I said on your post, I LOVE DMD now. It really is my go to drum sequencer. I enjoy using it at 32 steps & 1/8 notes. I also do my 808 on a midi track and even hihats since I want to pitch some rolls. I was always jealous of FLs sequencer & now we have an even better one imo đ just bc of the added velo, note repeat tools, etc. BTW please do a vid on the new samplers!
Could not agree more with what you said. I was always jealous of the FL users but now this workflow is king for me. Thanks for the shout!! And yes more 10.5 vids to come
J Pacaldo you took the worlds out of my mouth. Logic is on it now. đŻ
Love it! Thanks!!
Thank you for watching Jeanette! Really appreciate it
Sold my Elektron Analog Rytm when they did this. Workflow is so much simpler. Use this alongside a DSI Tempest and life couldnât be better. Thanks Tony. Saw this video last year, but Iâve been focusing on another music project where I actually play drums. Forgot completely how to use the DMD, but thankfully I saved this. Youâre the man! đđ
Happy to hear you liked the content! Thank you for watching and glad to hear that you're finding the workflow easy with the new DMD.

So cool, Tony! Just updated to 10.5. Can't wait to get started. Thanks for instructions!

Being able to drag a drum loop into the empty region, choosing DMD automatically chops up all the samples and puts them on their own pads is just amazing!
Couldn't agree more! Super intuitive and easy to get the ideas going. Thanks for watching!
Wow, I was using DMD the wrong way all this time, didn't know you can convert into MIDI, Was going back and forward from Logic to FL studio. Thanks

Amazing tutorial!! Thank You
Thank you for watching!
Awesome tutorial--the best part is how you boil down all the new options and get right to the best way to do things. Personally, I was like, great, Apple just gave us 10 more ways to do drums and I thought the old process was complicated and bad!!! This helps--esp. for a hip hop producer where drums are our bread and butter. BTW now that you've simplified Logic, I see that the new drum machine is basically the drum sequencer from iOS Garage Band, laid on top of the sample-handling and power of Logic--I've always wondered why more DAWs didn't incorporate FL Studio's detailed drum machine interface...down to pitching each hit individual hit (poeple can say what they like about FL Studio but their basic drum machine--after you dragged and dropped in some decent samples was far away the best and most customizable. With this release Logic has come very close, if not surpassed FL studio's drum machine, which is saying a lot. Thanks much--and for those familiar with the iOS sequencer, basically anything you could do in the iOS sequencer, you can now do in Logic, from quick rolling modifications to quick individual velocity alterations (no more trying to pick the right little dot among the thousands of dots in the automation window), down to shortening and extending individual sample tracks. Excellent video--you pinpointed my exactly what I needed to start having fun with the update instead of just being overwhelmed and pissed and lowered my stress level greatly...thought I might have to switch to my iPad permanently for making drum tracks...thanks again!
Anytime! You nailed it on the head with the FL sequencer. Apple just needed to make that and Iâd be happy. They surpassed it now! đ
Who is this guy?!?!?!?!?! Bruhhh you were right into it, so that equals = INSTANT subscription... Keep grinding - CZcams is MASSIVE!!! đ„
Appreciate you!!
Seconding this 100%! I'm just getting into doing some music professionally again (scoring now, used to be a rocker) and have just committed this last week to Logic, after flirting with relearning PT or learning Reaper etc. Your videos are dialed right the f in, man - a huge help. Thank you!

Logic killed it this time. Loving everything about it now.
Couldnât agree more. In the past it was hard sometimes to answer why Logic held its own against other DAWs when it couldnât do basic things that well. Now itâs a front runner. Thanks for watching đ
Tony Holiday agreed. I was eyeing S1 and Ableton really hard up until 10.5.
Tony Holiday do you know why my logic wonât update ??

Welcome to Logic Pro.
Love all the new features! But very disappointed that Logic didn't include Note Panning in the step sequencer and an actual Ghost Note feature instead of the generic one we have to setup. But still, Logic Gang...
You mean like being able to pan each step sequenced note? Ya that would be cool for sure... the ghost notes thing is a bit of a hit. But who knows maybe thatâll be 10.6/7/8. I feel like they really wanted to get these features out.
