They’re not always in the lead roles, but they definitely stand out. For this list, we're counting down those times when a British actor has earned rave reviews for their performance, stealing all the limelight from the movie as a whole. From lead roles in definitive horror, to supporting parts in '90s rom-coms... It's their work that we remember most of all.

Well thank you
Benedict Cumberbatch outshines everyone he’s paired with, by FAR!
Rickman stole the show in any movie. He made Harry Potter cool, he killed it in Die Hard, Robin Hood he was so good. The man was a great actor so many overlooked. He will be missed.
❤️🗺🌎🌍🌏 Chyeah Gone (Way) 2 Soon His Death Still Shocks Me Ta This Day It’ll Never Stop Shocking Me That He Gone Whew RIP
daniel radcliffe should be on the list

Dmn yaaass💞💞
hasnaa bekheet that’s me too girl 😁
Tom Hiddleston's Loki is the only thing that lured me to watch Marvel
The voice of Alan Rickman. The only Harry Potter Character the J.K Rowland wrote with one actor in mind.
She's Rowling not Rowland.
I thought Tim Roth was the first choice for that part.
The part she liked best was Gary Oldman as Sirius Black. She told an interviewer that she thought he caught the insanity that Black would have experienced after 15 years in that prison. She could never quite write it as it was a book for children, but he did manage to catch it anyway.
I still find it hard to believe that Alan Rickman has been taken from us. He was an amazing actor, who had a voice that chilled your spine, and gave you sexy goosebumps all at the same time! The one Villain you could easily fall in love with!
Hear 🙉 Chris Pine Voice So Sexy.
he looks like my assistant &. Boyfriend
Benedict Cumberbatch was the only reason I watched Star Trek into Darkness four times in a row.
Tom Hiddleston makes an amazing Loki! Loki is one of my favorite characters in the MCU and I don’t imagine anybody else playing him. I heard some crazy rumor that Jim Carrey was actually supposed to play Loki and the thought of that made me cringe. Maybe he would’ve somehow made a good Loki, I wouldn’t know, but Tom Hiddleston is who makes Loki a favorite to me and many others.
JackieR 30 They picked the right guy to play Loki.
I dont like Jim Carrey, he acts to much, all those moves and mimics... I dont think that he would be great Loki.
Egle Sakalinskaite agreed! I only know him from movies such as The Mask and The Grinch So obviously imagining him as Loki when I only saw those two movies just made me cringe so much!
Me also, I can add Ace Venture Pet detective or something else... Never saw any more serious movie with him...
We would've gotten a more stereotypical cackling insane Loki with Carrey. I think there were a couple of scenes at the end of Thor where Loki was meant to be, per the script, more that sort of laughing maniac, but Hiddleston went for basically the opposite.
Only 16 minutes screen time in silence of the lambs?! Anthony Hopkins really is one of the best.
James Granger Brian Cox is good, but pretty much nobody remembers he was in the movie at all.....and “stealing a scene” is the opposite of that, it’s what Hopkins achieved - playing his role perfectly, no overacting or similar BS.
+James Granger Those two roles are not comparable - it's like comparing Jim Carrey's roles in Ace Ventura and The Truman Show.
And there's nothing typical in Silence of the Lambs, that's why it has made into movie history and it's considered a cult classic; Hopkins nailed the character of Hannibal Lecter, and stole not just the scene but the whole movie. His performance is why all the sequels and prequels failed, nobody could compare with Anthony Hopkins' portrayal.
James Granger I do too, but that’s not the point here.
Opinion doesn’t equal truth, and the truth - recognized and shared by everyone - is that Hopkins more than deserved his Silence of the Lambs Oscar because he _is_ Lecter in that film; he robbed the scene blind (not just stole it), and that’s why for many people he _is_ the movie and whenever they think of the character, Anthony Hopkins’s performance is the first coming to their mind - followed (right behind and very close) by Mikkelsen’s.
Michael Longford, I agree with you, Anthony Hopkins is one of the best actors ever.
LucienSabre I certainly remember Brian Cox’s performance. I thought he was excellent in the part. He was really creepy. Hopkins was also very good too though.
Andy Serkis in basically EVERYTHING he's in!!
steven alvarez according to the oscars he's not a real actor! Jesus they haven't got a clue have they ???
PREACH!!!
steven alvarez I met Andy serkis before he was as famous as he is now. He had just been in the bill and I saw him in the Lake District and I told him I’d just seen him in the bill and he spent a good 10 mins talking to me and asking what I thought of his performance, he seemed like a really nice man.
Benedict cumberbatch steals the show in everything he acts in 😚
Alan Rickman has a great presence...always portrays great characters.
Gary 0ldman stole true romance in 6 minutes
stole Leon The professional, Airforce one mmmm........ EVERYONEEEE !!!!!!!!!
That Tom Hiddleston smile just melts 😍

Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch......😍
I need Alan Rickman back. I want him to live forever. What a legend
Tom Hiddleston ALWAYS steals the show in everything he’s in, and I Stan him a little too much.
"I am having an old friend for dinner" That line sent chills down my spine when I first heard it.
Alan Rickman needs to be no.1
When ever I hear Alan Rickman talking a picture of Severus Snape appears before my inner eye! :D
Tom Hiddleston 😍 awesome, charming, talented and show stealer.
Alan Rickman was an amazing actor. He is dearly missed!
Simon Pegg is another british actor who steals the scene - look at his Star Trek reboot’s role as Scotty, it stole in all three movies. :)
eh his accent is awful in those though
mk6rfc1 I don’t recall Pegg using any accent in Star Trek - unless you count his native british one. 🤔
simon pegg is english, the character of scotty is scottish, therefore his scottish accent is awful
there isnt just one accent of the UK you know ...
mk6rfc I tought Simon Pegg was scottish. When you told me he’s english, I looked things up and found out that for his role as Scotty he mixed up two different scottish accents - getting help with them from several people - and also played with the Scottish stereotype (source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_(film)#Cast).
Curb the condescending attitude please, because it’s not necessary (and is a tad insulting). Thank you.
lol i wasnt being condescending, this is a uk specialised channel, its pretty well known simon pegg is english
We love our British actors.
Jeremy Irons is missing here... he steals every movie and show he's in. But he's up in the top with Alan Rickman, so how can he fail? :D
Well, he did steal the show BvS...
In Margin Call he steals the film.
For Alan Rickman you could choose any film he was in. Or all of them, for that matter.
Benedict should of been higher on the list and Alan 1st
I agree
Watch this same list in 10 years. Guaranteed he'll be higher.
Black Panther
Andy Serkis
"What is love.."
Sarcasm was intended he shone in his roll as Gollum
Alan rickman when his name came I cried, you will be missed, fly high rickman
Alistair Cooke said it best 30 years ago... England has a tradition of producing and supporting great character actors, and they shine in whichever production they're placed
why wasn't Gary Oldman in this list ? Drexl in True Romance, Stansfield in Leon, Mason Verger in Hannibal, Sirius Black in the Harry Potter movies or Jim Gordon in the Batman movies.
I think Oldman's been such a constant stealer that they couldn't possibly pick one
Smiley in any John Le Carré adaption, just about all Brit males are in 'tinker tailor soldier spy'
To be fair at least in Harry Potter and Batman, he didn't really steal the show. He was great, don't get me wrong but in Batman he didn't steal the spotlight from Bale and in Harry Potter, well, I mean.....Snape.
He's is beyond any category. Nuff said.
No Ralph Fiennes in Schindlers List?
JMillerino His role wasn’t minor and he was the major villian
Also David Tennant in Jessica Jones. I ❤️this show and Kristen is amazing as are many others but c’mon, without Kilgrave it would lack.
No Gary Oldman in True Romance??
or Leon
he must have thought it was white boy day !
lee mcbride 😂😂😂🤣
Good to see Tim Roth get in there, but personally I would have gone for his role in Rob Roy. Totally stole the show.
Tulkas219 He was so wicked in that film. Actually, there were probably more villainous characters in that movie than any other that I can think of off the top of my head but he was the worst one.
It's as if British actors channel their Shakespearian ancestry in full force
I always felt they're more professional in their work than Americans, no offence
That's because most British film actors also do a hell of a lot of stage work...much less common for US stars.
Also, I feel like a lot of hollywood stars come out of nowhere, while the British tend to choose properly schooled actors.
I'll take a lot of American Black actors and any British actor.
I LOVE stagework; you really learn the craft that way.
This is an opinion shared by Al Pacino.
British actors are 😍
Gary Oldman in Leon thought he would have at least made the list.
Judi Dench's win for 'Shakespeare in Love' is a consolation Oscar after robbing her for 'Mrs. Brown' a year earlier where the prize went to a mediocre performance from the only American actress nominated in the lead category, Helen Hunt, but I wouldn't say that she did not really deserve her Oscar for 'Shakespeare' because Dame Judi Dench is a Dame for a reason and Sir Anthony Hopkins is a Sir for a reason. There are a lot of British actors who outshone their co-stars, whether an American co-star or a fellow Brit star. Carey Mulligan in Wildlife, Drive and Shame, Rachel Weisz in Disobedience, The Light Between Oceans and The Favourite, Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Colin Firth in Supernova, Tilda Swinton in LITERALLY everything, Vanessa Kirby in The World to Come, Dame Helen Mirren in Trumbo and more recently, Dame Emma Thompson in Cruella. Also, British actors or simply European actors are THE best ones, there is no question why these actors steal the show everytime and that shouldn't come as a surprise.
I would also put Laurence Olivier's brilliant performance in "Spartacus" (1960) on this list!
“In seemingly small roles or roles with not a lot of screen time” yet you include several main characters who got quite a bit of screen time. Bane, Loki and Hans Gruber to name a few
I thought David Tennant stole the show in the Fright Night remake, even though the rest of the movie looked shit.
I quite liked Fright Night. Not every movie needs to be oscar worthy. It was a fun flick...
Have you watched Jesica Jonesseason 1? He stole the show in that and season 2 without him was rubbisH!!
Mulaniz River I thought this list was for movies only.
Stephen Murphy The list is, but MY comment was a compliment towards David's acting! I had no idea we should only stick to movies...
Mulaniz River I did watch season 1 of Jessica Jones.
Jason Isaacs in The Patriot.
Cumberbatch in Star Trek is just thrilling. When he says the line " my name is khan" and later a lonely tear runs down his cheek, I must admit, that I would exchange my husband for him.
And Loki as the god of mischief is so lovable. So I can't decide which one I prefer. The other actors aren't my favourites.
Robert Shaw was absolutely blind drunk giving that performance too. He’d been on a bender and they had to wake him to film the scene and the rest of the cast were in awe because of his outstanding performance.
Alan Rickman voice is just iconic , he was one of the best British actors. Sad he is not longer with us , this list was good enough from my favorites .
Where is Gary Oldman and Andy Serkis? 😒😒 and Hiddleston should have been place higher, he is the most loved villain because of his role as Loki.
I think Hiddleston might have dropped a few places because he's been playing fairly major roles in all his Marvel films since. The others were all one-shots, so they stand out a little more.
I'm just guessing here, I can't read minds :3
You should do this again for tv shows eg david tennant in jessica jones.
Calous 43 I agree but he's not british.
Tessa Canterburytessa Yeah he is hes from scotland.
@@tessacanterbury8935 And Christian Bale is from Wales, which is also in Britain.
Have you seen him in 'Bad Samaritan? Amazing performance.
Jim Moriarty
Andrew Scott is Irish.....
The video says British actors not just English
Ireland is not part of Britain
Yeah, he's from Dublin.
I'll tell you a British actor who stole the show, Sean Connery in Indiana Jones and the last Crusade
Not British, Scottish.
@@manipool Scottish is British you idiot
Greg Wise and in Highlander
M Byley England, Scotland and Wales are all part of Great Britain so it’s correct to call the citizens of these countries British.
@@manipool Skool woz tuff.
Give us a 'whoop whoop' if you think that Peter Ustinov's performance in Spartacus was worth a mention (yeah I know I'm showing my age).
So hard to choose just one :D Alan was/is totally awesome :D!
Alan Rickman should be number 1.
How... did I not know Christian Bale was British? How?!
He does an amazing American accent, maybe that's why
Plus he’s been living in America for quite some time now! Say 15-20 years maybe,
Felipe Maldonado Yeah, true! I also think the films American Hustle and American Psycho kind of misled me ahaha.
I'm British and I'd never heard of him when I watched American Psycho. I honestly thought he was American.
Watch Speilberg's Empire under the sun - gt movie and all will become clear.@@cadyfitzgerald3273
Q: What is easier than, stealing candy from a baby?
A: Stealing the show, from Mark Wahlberg!
lol
Gary Oldman stole the limelight as the corrupt narcotics cop in "Leon".
Oldman mentioned, on a UK chat show, that he spent 3 months with Jonathan Harris so he could effectively play the part of Jonathan Harris playing the role of Dr. Smith in the "Lost in Space" movie. He kind of stole the limelight in that one too.
Heroes are nothing without a (ground-breaking) villain :x I miss Alan Rickman :(
The voice
Shaw also had a memorable death scene in Jaws.
Jeff Bloomfield Pity the movie's writers gave the wrong date for the sinking of the Indy. Shaw was convincing in his role up to that point.
Rupert Everett outdid everyone in My Best Friend's Wedding. I'm surprised that wasn't included here.
Cumberbatch was great as Kahn in my opinion and Huddleston is fucking spectacular as Loki. Absolutely fantastic
Gary oldman and Michael Caine
Gary Oldman as Drexel in True Romance and I feel Sir Anthony Hopkins finest hour came as Captain William Bligh in the 1980's adaptation of The Bounty.
Alan Rickman also stole the show as Metatron in Dogma!!!!
Nice to hear an accent from home
Where is Emily Blunt in The Devil Wears Prada
It wad Anne Hathaway
@@zonafide4448 It was Emily Blunt.
so wavy Emily Blunt stole the show from Anne Hathaway in virtually every scene they shared.
I just found out that Christian Bale is British 😂
That Thumbnail Though, Lol
Terence Stamp in Superman 2
Kevin Costner acted Robin Hood so badly, that I watch it for the villain.
Heather Contois I don’t think he was bad so much as miscast. Why didn’t they get a British or even an Australian to play the part?
James McAvoy steals the show too. Been great in everything he’s in
I didn’t realise Aiden Gillen was in the dark knight rises
I see benedict, i click
Okay, does anyone else feel Benedict Cumberbatch in their bones like I do?? It like he is delivering his lines right through my marrow!!
What now Cumberbatch kills it in every role he plays
Alan rickman is also one who kills it in anything he's in wether the movie does good or not just saying
Gary Oldman - Leon The Professional (1994)
and Rosamund Pike - Gone Girl. (2014)
1) Tom Hiddleston
2) Benedict Cumberbatch
No Michael Caine, Tim Curry or Gary Oldman?
Again not many movies in which Caine has got a bit part.
Cumberbatch & Hiddleston ❤
Is Pete postlethwaite British? his role in lost world was amazing
Yes,he was British, and Spielberg said he was the greatest actor in the world
Yes, he lived in a the same town as me in Shropshire and we often saw him in the local pub and the co-op, lol. He was very down to earth, wore jumpers with holes in and you would never know he was famous to look at him but he had Spielberg and Johnny Depp stay at his house. He once took Depp to the local pub and I kicked myself for missing it!!
He was great in the usual suspects.
Rosamund Pike - Gone Girl (2014)
Gary Oldman - Leon The Professional (1994),
David Bowie - Labyrinth (1986)
and Alfred Molina - Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Honestly there aren’t many times when Benedict hasn’t stolen the show. Only thing I can really think of is Osage Orange county and that’s only because he’s alongside Streep!
I see benedict. I click...
I was gonna say if Hiddles didn’t make it in this list I would riot 😂 I love my Thor, but Loki was a complete scene-stealer.
Uuuum, hello? David Bowie in "Labyrinth"? He stole every scene he was in as Jareth!!
Awesome film
Yes he did.
Sooooo true!!
Matt Smith in Pride & Prejudice & Zombies as Parson Collins. He was the only one worth watching in that bomb of a movie.
Good call, Smith was amazing in that role. And yes the film was otherwise complete shite.
Tulkas219 That short outtakes clip of Matt Smith eating scones was far more entertaining than the movie itself. xD
Einez Crespo - I hadn't seen that clip so just watched it, thanks for the tip! Have to agree, funnier than anything in the film. "The muffins are ready Elizabeth" seriously cracked me up. Love it!
Tulkas219 Glad you saw it. Him and Charles Dance eating in synch was hilarious! Smith has good comic timing.
thank u! matt smith literally was the only part of that movie that makes it re-watchable. he was great as Mr. Collins. also, I thought he was the most attractive of the men. forgive me for sounding like i'm objectifying him, but he was way more attractive than Mr. Darcy.
..... Where's our beloved Shakespearian Captain of the USS Enterprise? Come on he's worthy of at least an honourable mention!
And where's Gandalf ffs...
But he is the leading cast member already. I think he chose supporting actors who overshone the lead
How can the capt of the USS enterprise steal the fucking show????
Odin, Professor Snape, Batman, Loki, Dr strange , Bane
My fav British actor is Christain Bale and Charlie Cox (Daredevil series)
Alan Rickman in Prince of Thieves he was a very sexy villian and the voice
Only pressed on the video because Benedict is the thumbnail. Smart move
The British actors always overshadow the other cast because they are just better actors. Thats just the way it is. American actors merely stand in front of the camera and say the lines. They can walk from one set to another and its only the costume that changes.
Can we just say how *TOM HARDY* stole the show in” _Inception_ “ Everyone did a great job ( -although I found Ellen Page a bit flat- ), but Hardy’s *Eames* stole EVERY SCENE he was in...I esp loved the ones where he was antagonizing Arthur 😊 This movie has aged well and I still consider it MY *FAVORITE* *MOVIE* ❤️ 💕 💜 Nolan is such a genius and a visionary 👍
I would have loved to have heard some of their full dialogue
If Jeff Goldblum were British, he would be in this list because of Thor Ragnarok.
naah, theres like 4 or 5 other characters that are better than the grandmaster in that film
mk6rfc1 Yeah but are there better actors?
probably
Benedict cumberbatch
Banoffee Camplestaff
Bumblebee Crumplepot
Battenburg CakeSlice
blancmange CoffeeCup
He also looks like a seal
Great guy
what about blooperreel creamybun
Musical Marvel Yes that is also a way to pronounce this name
Bumbershoot Cummerbund.
Or my username
How is Tom Hiddleston/Loki not number 1?!
Sure he's good and all but the roles that placed above it were worthy of their places.
I'm here to ask the same question
Because Anthony Hopkins kills it as Hannibal Lecter
Because he plays a silly supervillain and doesn't compare to all the others.
@@MachineFuckingHate sure.... Here's the attention you were looking for. Happy? 😂
Thats Aiden Gillan Aka Littlefinger from GoT, trying to intrerogate Bane in the plane. Never saw that it was him before!
"I'm having an old friend for dinner". Scary.
cumberbatch and hiddleston for a James bond movie don't care whose the villian or bond both fantastic actors
