Things you should know in order to keep your baby owl alive + how to make your house owl proof

  • Hi there you huge human bundles of kindness! ;-)
    This is a video I made especially for UPE Assignment (subscriber) because he requested a video on how your owl could die the first days you bring it home and how to make your house owl proof. I hope this answers your questions and if you have any video suggestions, don't hesitate to comment. :-) I'll be making more 'emotional' videos like the one called 'Another barn owl video: what's a soulmate?' I made a few weeks ago. If it's not an informative video but an emotional or 'artsy' one as I like to call them, I'll always put 'Another barn owl video' in the beginning of the title. Let me know in the comments what you think of this idea. :-)
    Take care and don't forget that I love you guys and really appreciate your comments and support!

    I had a pair of barn owls because someone found them and couldn't take it back to their nest. Here the wildlife authorities used to be trashy and they said they couldn't do something, so I decided to take care of them at 15 years old, my parents helped and supported me, but one of the baby owls died at days, and the other one at months, now watching your vids I can spot my mistakes, I guess I did some things fine using logics, but was sad that they died, I was so sad for that :(

      Hey, don't blame yourself. You couldn't possibly know all of this stuff and it's not like you bought an owl without having the knowledge and then it died. You were in this situation because you're a good person and wanted to help the animals. If this were to happen ever again, you would succeed. Please don't blame yourself. I understand that you were sad ofcourse. Much love from Belgium!

    I believe its called a "perch" in English. that's just what everyone calls the things birds sit on or its used to describe someone "perched" somewhere. like batman is perched on a ledge etc. but your English is great I had no idea English wasn't your birth/native language when I first found your videos.

    Hello! Thanks so much for making this video. Some parts made me really nervous, like causing the owl to bleed to death if we accidentally pluck the pin feathers, or breaking its leg if we attach the bracelet wrongly. OMG 😱 I think i'll just watch more of your videos with Lookie, maybe I get myself a bunny instead. I rescued a baby bird before. It slept with me for 3 days. Then I passed it to someone who's very good with bird but it died the next day! I couldn't stop crying...

      @skinbyrdable  Před 8 lety +10

      I'm glad you realize it's not as easy as it seems. If having an owl is really your dream and having owls is legal in your country, then I'm sure there are also falconers in your region and I would suggest you save your money for the education and then you can have your dream. :-) Nothing is impossible. I'll definately keep making more videos as well informative as 'artsy' (aka emotional) ones. Have a super nice day and talk to ya soon ;-)

But I am getting my owl fix by watching your videos. Keep them coming; we love these teaching videos. Also, "draft" is the correct word in English for cold air blowing in from the outdoors that make us sick. Yes. This is correct; you have it right.

    Hello, to that tutorial part of putting a blanket/Teddy Bear/Plushie, I would improve it a bit with washing it with specialized chemistry used to wash clothes for babies, and making it absorb your scent (rub your sweat, or something), so it has way higher chances to recognize you as its parent.

    Is the blanket/teddy bear only needed if it didn't imprint on you and it replaces the mother, is it just to keep them company and content while their alone, or if the owlet imprinted on you it wouldn't need it. if it's the answer's one of the first two, would a plush owl work for a teddy bear?

    Thank you for the explanation! The only chicks I've ever raised were chickens which are much hardier birds. Thank you for the information , seeing as it gives a basic handle for what you'll need to learn from your falconer. I'd love to get a barn owl, but I'm curious if they're the 'easier' (I know that no animal is 'easy', some are just more difficult to raise than others) birds? I think in another video you said a man bought two snowies without realizing that they're the most difficult owl to raise; what are the more difficult owls to handle? Thank you, and have a good day the both of ya!

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  Před 8 lety +7

      Barn owls are the easiest to keep and to handle so if you want a bird of prey, these are the smartest choice for your first owl. The little owl is also not difficult to keep but has a very stubborn character and stays rather shy. So I wouldn't recommend that. Eagle-owls are also not for beginners as they are really big and dangerous. They become as tame as Lookie BUT the difference is: if I make a mistake with Lookie, it's not deadly for me, if you make a mistake in raising an eagle-owl or a mistake as you're flying your eagle-owl, you can get seriously hurt. Hope this helps?

Every time I try to feed it, it sits on the table, rather than standing up like it did the first day I brought it home. when I try to make it stand up it just sits again on the table. The first 2 days I had it, it was very energetic and , at night, it jumped out of the box I have it and started wandering around the house. Now it seems very depressed and tired. send help

    can you save the baby owl from bleeding out if a feather pin broke, or is it inevitable that they will die? or what about other types of birds that are good for beginners besides owls?

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  Před 7 lety

      Yes you can, there's a medicin for it but I didn't have it around the house. I guess a parakeet would also be for beginners? Or do you only mean birds of prey? Owls aren't REALLY birds of prey because they don't have crops. But I call them birds of prey to point out that they can still be dangerous and need a lot of care. If you want a bird of prey, owls are the easiest. Especially barn owls, little owls and rufous-legged owls.

      If you haven’t got hemistop (blood stopping powder) in your home, regular wheat flour will do in a pinch! It will make the blood stop at the wound so that more blood will not spurt out.
      Birds have a very small blood volume to begin with, so it’s really important to do this as fast as possible if there’s an actively bleeding wound. Sprinkle the wheat flour onto the wound so it makes the blood clump up and stop new blood from leaking out.

    So, it is okay to keep my baby barn owl on a box right ? Because some people said that they are better to be kept in a room (?) i dont really know why. can you confirm that its okay to keep the baby owl until it grows in the box ? thanks

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  Před 7 lety +1

      It's ok to keep it in a box. The only "harsh" part at a certain moment is when they start to jump: you have to put a lid on the box (the box shouldn't be completely covered with the lid but you put a book or something on the lid so that your owl can't jump the lid off) and they jump with their head against the lid so many times! That was hard for me but apparently, this is how every falconer does it in Belgium. I guess you could keep them in a room but the whole room will be covered in owl shit.

    • @manwhocantbemoved93
      @manwhocantbemoved93 Před 7 lety

      thanks for the fast response. Yes, i did that do my javan scops owl. He is a bit older than my barn owl. It's a pity that i missed the information about having a teddy bear or blanket on the box with them. I wish i got that info sooner. He tried jumping off the box, as if he is trying to fly away. I just got a barn owl a couple weeks back. May i know until what age they are allowed to live outside the house (considering the weather). I lived in Indonesia, which is a very tropical country, so maybe the things that i need to look out is heat stroke, rain and wind, but yea, what is the appropriate age for them to be able to live on a pole outside the house ?
      thanks before :)

    • @manwhocantbemoved93
      @manwhocantbemoved93 Před 7 lety

      oh and is it okay for these young owls to live inside my room (with ac in it). around 20degree celcius temperature set.

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  Před 7 lety

      The environment is ok temperature wise

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  Před 7 lety

      They need to stay inside the first 3 months even if you live in a warm climate. This is because the first three months, they can become sick very easily and die. After three months (when they have all of their feathers) you can start taking them outisde to socialize them with traffic, dogs, horses etc. Take it for walks, A LOT. This is what I did with Lookie. Don't only go in nature but also into the city. That way they get used to everything.
