    Last night we found an exhausted or potentially injured barn owl in the middle of the road. Didn't even react as the cars were passing by 10 centimeters from it. We have no experience so we contacted local vets which suggested to put it in a box, get it home and leave some water with it. We picked it up with a towel and put it in the car, not wrapped but we let it lay there. It was about an hour's drive home, steadily it was laying lower and lower. By the time we reached home, it was barely breathing. Unfortunately, it drew its last breath moments before we left the car.
    I was feeling pretty sad and let down from our lack of experience. Seeing your video made wish that I was more educated/prepared. Thanks to you, I will be in the future.

      Best to keep a sick or injured owl somewhere quiet and at room temperature or slightly warmer (unless the weather is very warm/hot - they can get overheated), lightly wrapped in something like a large towel. More detailed info here: www.barnowltrust.org.uk/picking-up-a-live-owl/

    I have Barn Owls on my property….currently snow has blanketed are area and I’m worried for them. How many days can a Barn Owl survive without food. They stay huddled on top of a nesting box and I’m not seeing them fly. I’ve cleared a large area of snow under the next box and spread cracked corn in hopes of attracting varmint. If I don’t see them eat after day 2 I’ll have to try to find a way to rescue I assume. This video is most helpful.

      A vet who's experienced with birds might be able to help with the broken wings, but it's impossible to say for sure. The advice in the video about giving the bird some water with a little bit of sugar or glucose should be ok for a day or two, but please get local expert help as soon as possible. Search for a bird vet, or a wildlife rescue centre in your country.
      Just water is better than nothing - but if the bird is very thin it will need food - we can't advise you as we don't know much about Potoos, or what they eat - meat may not be suitable. (Our information is for owls in Europe.)

    • @BarnOwlTrust1
      @BarnOwlTrust1  Před 4 lety +1

      It'd be best to get local advice on feeding a spotted owl, as we don't have those in the UK.
      Once a day should be fine. As a rough guide, an adult Barn Owl weighs up to 360g & may eat 2 dead day-old chicks every night. Spotted Owls weigh up to 600g, so presumably will need more. Captive Owls can be fed at any time of day except during periods of extreme heat or cold, when the food could either deteriorate or freeze. Increase or reduce the food supply according to the amount the owl is taking.
      Hope this helps.

I will try to find a rescue tomorrow, but if the rescues are closed due to covid. . . is chicken ok to feed him? We were able to handle him safely. very nice but id also advise using stripped food initially ,a low condition bird is better not using energy to cast ,in diurnal birds it can lead to a condition called sour crop if they cant generate the cast

    • @BarnOwlTrust1
      @BarnOwlTrust1  Před 5 lety +3

      Hello. As owls do not have crop I don't think the condition you mentioned would be an issue. The pellets produced by birds being fed dead poultry chicks are very small and easily cast. However, using food without roughage for the first few days (only) is also acceptable.

Although it turned it's head to look at me, it wouldn't move the lower part of its body at all, even when I rubbed its chest softly with a stick. I wonder if it fell out of the very tall eucalypt tree next to it and got shocked. There was a lot of runny birdpoo next to it. I've taken the owl home with me. It's fast asleep now on my desk. It's beak is so pointy and sharp. I don't want to lose a finger. Any advice? Tomorrow I'll call the Wildlife rescue people to collect it.
