  • This is the first episode in a new mini-series, introducing you to some of the birds I work with.
In this video I give a brief overview of my beautiful 10 year old barn owl who has been with me for most of his life. I will talk about how I got him, what makes barn owls so amazing and what I love about working with him.
Hope you can take 10 minutes out of your stressful day to enjoy something a bit different!

I once opened a hay loft door on a barn, saw movement in the dark, something came right at me. Was a barn owl just like this one, talons first. I managed to duck in time, luckily. It had it's nest up there and was trying to protect it's chicks. The owner of the barn and I decided to leave them be, and waited for the owlets to fly out before returning. Was a close call, but I still think they're awesome birds.

I’ve always loved the look of barn owls. They’re not a species that we see here. We have two species of owl here, the German or laughing owl( thought to be extinct) and the Ruru or Morepork, which is a small native owl species that most people have heard, but few have seen. Just as with our two species of raptors (the harrier hawk from Australia, and the NZ Falcon) it is, in the normal run of things, illegal to have them in your possession, so it’s rare that people get a good look at them. There is I think 1 licensed and practising falconer using NZ Falcons in the Sth Island. They’ve found a niche using the falcons to keep other birds off the ripening fruit in the vineyards of the wine country.

I just want to take a second to thank you for what your doing here. Lots of people don't like falconry purely because they don't understand it, or because what they've experienced from it has been bad. You're doing a lot to show that that's wrong and falconry can be excellent when done properly.
For me personally these videos are really helpful too since I volunteer at a small falconry center and whilst I know a lot of the information in the videos already it's nice to pick up on new ideas and ways of doing things.

Ran into a barn owl in the rafters of my parents barn when I was about ten. This was at night and it was a bit spooky!
I tie Yorkshire style flies for fly fishing; if you don't mind my saying so, his shoulder feathers are very handsome; they'd tie some interesting patterns. Cheers!

I live in a small caravan way out in the sticks & leaves and I have the pleasure of being greeted with a barn owl that passes by me nearly every morning and most evenings.
I regularly find pellets in my shed and recently set up a camera close by. Unsurprisingly any noise from my caravan instantly alerts this beautiful bird and that's why I've never bumped into it when I'm outside. However I never fail to be wonderfully impressed and joyful every time I see it fly by.

Had a Tiny Owl live just above my window in the corner of the second floor under a large overhang on a Water tank overflow pipe and spent many hours watching him/her swoop down and catch mice from around the dustbins .
I wrapped and tie wrapped carpet around the pipe for a more comfortable perch .
Noisy little fella at times .
