This video reminded me that my (personal, let alone release date) GTX 960 is about 3 months shy of 6 years old, and has ran faithfully since I bought it. Fans bit the dust (literally) around Thanksgiving last year, so I treated it to a $20 set of replacements, a good dusting and it's first ever fresh new thermal paste.
At $180 bucks off of Newegg back in 2016, this thing was great. The larger memory version of the card, a nice beefy cooler with two fans, heatpipes, and copper over the die, all topped off with a slick metal backplate to give it that premium feel.
    180 bucks.
At this point, both in terms of literal age, and what it represents, this card is now a relic of a time long passed. Even factoring in inflation, a card of this caliber at that price doesn't exist anymore. Even at the bogus elusive "MSRP". That sort of value is just history now
I was so happy this year that my card could still run Forza Horizon and Halo well enough, even if I need to run 90-100% of settings as low as they go. But it was bittersweet, tangible evidence that my card's time has come. Any future games will be too much.
As someone who gets migraines, and is specifically susceptible to visual stimuli, I simply can't play games for any length of time if the FPS tanks below 45-50, as it can translate into physical illness for me.
It's rough, knowing that things probably won't go back to how they used to be, but damn, Jay, do I appreciate what you do. You and a lot of the YT PC community. Stuff like Jayzgiving really means a lot to us, even if we don't win ourselves.
    Appreciate what you do man.

My position on this whole fiasco: I'm still using a 980 Ti and, right now, I'm glad that I have a card that's still able to pull its weight for now, because I'm completely and absolutely unable to upgrade, because to try and get something like a 3080 is little more than a fool's game right now. For NVIDIA to come out - right now, in the middle of a silicon shortage and crypto boom - with a card that will sell for actual thousands of dollars, is truly and honestly one of the most comedically awful things I've seen them do in a while.
That's not even tone-deafness at this point; it's just absolute and complete ignorance to the current situation. To split a core package yet again to different SKUs means that there's less to go around for products people actually want to buy, and selling the most unnecessary GPU in a long time for a quick buck undid all the work they tried with the 3050. And even then, the 3050, as you say, isn't going to sell for the $250 MSRP when it launches; I'll be amazed if it's remotely close to it.

Took 4 months for the 3080 to arrive and the build to be completed, and then was changed from Asus Tuf to EVGA but I could live with that as they upgraded motherboard from Z490 to Z590 for free. Intel seems to be doing okay, still printing money it seems (perhaps I'm missing some information?). There are enough consumers willing to pay for their stuff to cover any loss from reputation (reputation has very limited value at their size). Put another way, as long as people are giving them money, they will not change (and why would they? Its working). Consumers also have short memories and forgive offenses too quickly for companies to really care beyond the next fiscal quarter.
If you want INTEL to change...stop giving them your money.

The problem is that video cards ceased to be, for the most part, a consummer-only piece of equipment to become an asset that produces returns far above any other financial investment available through cryptomining. This change in use has its impact in the market as they have been priced more like capital assets than consumer goods. This overlap will continue to drive their prices up until such a point where gpu mining is not profitable, or at least not as profitable as the next most profitable alternative use for the capital that is currently allocated to cryptomining. Mostly I'd just advise to wait until ETH changes to POS. When it does happen the markets will be scrambled to such an extent in the first few days/weeks that GPU prices will, likely, drop substantially or, at least, demand from miners will grind to a halt while they decide what to do next.

the crypto community is an internal cycle, cards move down the chain until not useful anymore. by that time usually they are very old or done anyways, so its not even worth the work to sell them apart from bulk sales, which is not leaking into the DIY market.

Both Intel (CPU) and Nvidia (GPU) have a near-monopoly in their segments with over 80% market shares in their areas. AMD lost shares in the CPU-market because people are crazy after the power hogging Intel-CPU's and I think that is one part they concentrate on in the future to get that share back.
