Ive tried taking a chip off of a board not long ago with a hot air station and some flux. It's easier than it looks to rip pads when trying to take the parts off. I guess the low melt solder is very much needed for getting the original solder to melt easier.

Tip for new to soldering: do not pick up surface mounted components while desoldering. Gently push them to aside, and if component can slide, you can pick it up. If you pick up component while few pins still stuck, you will rip them off for sure.

I hope you're looking for land so that you can build the house that you want, custom designed for your family's needs.
I know that it would not be cheap but you could build it with areas to be finished later as you can afford.
Building in CA is going to be expensive but when finished, it will be quite a good long term investment.
Prefab metal building kits they have out now are very nice and go up quick keeping labor costs down.
They are very efficient and with very low maintenance.
Some of the metal building house kits are pretty impressive.
    AND, they don't burn down.
You could add power cells to the roof and keep your utility costs low.
Once I saw that last house you looked at, I could tell it was a piece of crap.
I've been building structures for a long time and renovating them as well.
As I said, look for a kit that has extra room for growth.
I have a friend who bought one in Las Vegas. It is now worth two and a half times more than the original cost and that's just been in the last 3 years.
