You know, Harri, they did not get the full respect they earned and deserved. Especially when the 'disco' era was coming to an end, they were targeted by a subgroup in the music industry (the beginnings of the punk movement) that aimed their anger at the Bee Gees because they were SO PROLIFIC after Saturday Night Live. I believe they had 5 of the 6 very top spots on the charts at that point. Sadly, the BeeGees were forced into the background, but decided to keep writing and selling their music to other famous artists (like Barbra Streisand). Barry wrote the entire 'Guilty' album for her and performed a duet on it. They are truly incredible and I am so happy you appreciate them so fully. Great channel, Harri!

I agree, they got a lot of fame, recognition and appreciation back then, but the critics really held back. Now, these same critics are repentant, and I hope Barry Gibb sees this hapoening. I agree, they should’ve been talked about in the same light as the Beatles, from the start. I think they were better than the Beatles, and Barry Gibb is just as prolific a songwriter as Paul McCartney.

This song reminds me of the Beatles I know that they idealized the Beatles and said that they'd be bigger than the Beatles back when they were beginning in the 60's. I don't really think that they are underrated I just think that we just didn't realize how great they were until more recently. I had no idea how many hits they had for themselves and others. Going back I'm not sure that I would have apreciately them back in the day because I wasn't ready. For me they are THE GREATEST!!!

I think many people have covered this song, but most notably Barry Manilow and Dionne Warwick did it as a duet, and Marie Osmond covered it on her album This is the Way That I Feel, with all of her brothers singing back up, which actually sounds pretty cool. Though, she changed the lyrics a little, instead of "now and then you need someone older" she says "now and then, if her love grows colder."

  • @francisxray9900

Something about respect. Big fans of them were (are) Brian Wilson, Alice Cooper, Bono, Stephen Stills, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, George Martin, Paul Anka and and and and and many, many more great supastars. Elvis, Janis Joplin, Leonard Cohen, Status Quo, Take That, Beyonce, Jimmy Sommerville, Jose Feliciano and an endless list of other great singers or groups covered songs of them. They wrote whole albums for Kenny Rogers, Barbra Streisand, Dionne Warwick, The Marbles or Diana Ross. So what's the problem if a bunch of bloody bastard, so called music-experts ever tried to push them under the carpet or US radiostations stopped to give them airplay. Why should an oak be pissed of a wildsow, rubbing it's ass on it? Bee Gees went to eternity because of their genius of art in music. Not to compare at all. That's it, just the truth.

Harri, I had the white label DJ copy of this back in 1972. Practically wore a hole through it. It was an "embarrassment" during this burgeoning hard rock era to be a Bee Gees fan, though many there were lurking in the closet, secretly listening. There was even an appreciative magazine article (I think in Creem) which raised this very point. The writer, while lauding the Bee Gees as a guilty pleasure, jokingly lived in fear of a morose, embarrassing fantasy: "MAN STRUCK AND KILLED BY CAR WHILE CARRYING BEE GEES RECORD." You had to be there during that era to truly appreciate it. This rock era was the first major time the Gibbs faced resentment by the rock community, though actually even in Australia they were sometimes put down as a goody-two-shoes kiddie act akin to the Osmonds (whom they later befriended). Much later, after their extreme success in the 1970s and early '80s, they were to incur a more savage and career-damaging wrath when for years DJs refused to play their records and professional sports teams held "Disco Record Burning Parties" on the athletic fields.
Barry Gibb is the #2 hit songwriter behind Paul McCartney. The great session drummer, Clem Cattini (Clemente Anselmo Agustino Cattini), who, as a member of the Tornados, drummed on Joe Meek's 1962 composition and production of the worldwide hit, "Telstar," is on the skins here. Listen to his syncopated roll at 4:16. Just lovely work; precisely what the climax of the song called for. He, the Gibbs, and many regulars of the Bee Gees recording and touring personnel, are depicted in the novelty pop-up gatefold album jacket on which "Run to Me" appears, the lp, "To Whom it May Concern."

I have so many favorites, I adore them, but this song is on my short list of favorites. It’s beautiful, one of their best, and ironically came out during the period when they were struggling with record sales.

Harri, would you please consider reacting to their medley from the 1989 Melbourne "One for All" concert. They do bits of many of their hits plus those they wrote for people like Streisand, Warwick, Rogers/Parton, Diana Ross, Celine Dion. Are they underappreciated? YESYESYESYES! Three distinct voices. All great songwriters. They are rated among the top 5 groups for sales and as composers of all time (up there with Lennon/McCartney, Elton/Bernie, &c.) and would have been even higher if not blacklisted due to the disco backlash which was simply a blip on their radar. My favorite voice was Robin's with his amazing natural vibrato. Barry starts the song, then Robin comes in with "Run to me", then Maurice joins for the third harmony.

One of my favorites from The Bee Gees. Susanna Hoffa and Matthew Sweet also covered this beautiful ballad.

Great song, great reaction. The Bee Gees are one of the absolute best singer/songwriters ever and I do believe they are totally underrated. Thank you for reacting to such a classic anthem of them

This is, along with Broken Heart and Words, my favorite 3 Bee Gees tunes, but their song catalog is sooo huge there are many more I love. But for emotional reasons, those 3 stand out. Bee Gees are without a doubt one of the greatest song writing teams ever, along with the amazing harmonies, they stand along my angel Karen C. as my two favorite singer/singers of my generation. I have other ones I adore, like Linda R., but the Gibbs and Ms. Carpenter stand out.

Hair, I think The Bee Gees were the original singers of Run to Me. I don’t remember anyone else performing this song. I do believe it was their song, and they of course, were the best!!
