Flying Drones with the Dnipro Battalion: Russian Roulette (Dispatch 93)

  • Prior to the ceasefire agreement reached in Minsk on Thursday, the winter offensive launched by the Russian backed separatists of the Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) had claimed the lives of at least 220 soldiers and civilians.
    As ceasefire talks were being discussed, there were reports of the DNR reinforcing their positions around the Ukrainian-controlled city of Mariupol. The capture of Mariupol is vital to the DNR's dreams of achieving statehood, with its port providing a link to the outside world.
    In this dispatch, VICE News travels to the village of Chermalyk, located 20 miles north of Mariupol, where Ukrainian forces are preparing the defense of the city and using volunteer-made drones to gather intelligence on separatist positions.

    The Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances is a political agreement signed in Budapest, Hungary on 5 December 1994, providing security assurances by its signatories relating to Ukraine's accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. The Memorandum was originally signed by three nuclear powers, the Russian Federation, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom. China and France gave somewhat weaker individual assurances in separate documents.[1]
    The memorandum included security assurances against threats or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine as well as those of Belarus and Kazakhstan. As a result Ukraine gave up the world's third largest nuclear weapons stockpile between 1994 and 1996,[2][3] of which Ukraine had physical though not operational control. The use of the weapons was dependent on Russian controlled electronic Permissive Action Links and the Russian command and control system.[4][5]
    Following the 2014 Crimean crisis, the U.S.,[6][7] Canada,[8] the U.K.,[9] as well as the other countries[10] all separately stated that Russian involvement is in breach of its obligations to Ukraine under the Budapest Memorandum, a Memorandum signed by Sergei Lavrov,[11] and in clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity. Russia, however, argued that the Budapest memorandum does not apply to the 2014 Crimean crisis because separation of Crimea was driven by an internal political and social-economic crisis. Russia initially claimed it was never under obligation to force any part of Ukraine's civilian population to stay in Ukraine against its will.[12]

    The nazi mercenary at 00:50seconds is wearing the insignia of the 14th WAFFEN SS (1st Galician) which murdered many innocent civilians during WW2.
    These nazi mercenaries are sponsored by oligarcs who used to exploit the south-eastern Ukrainians.
    Also Troops of the Azov Battalion use the Social-National Assembly (SNA) logo, an inverted Wolfsangel, a widely used symbol in Nazi Germany, on their banner. A BBC report summarizes the evidence that the battalion is neo-Nazi:
    Run by the extremist Patriot of Ukraine organisation, which considers Jews and other minorities "sub-human" and calls for a white, Christian crusade against them, [the battalion] sports three Nazi symbols on its insignia: a modified Wolf's Hook, a black sun (or "Hakensonne") and the title Black Corps, which was used by the Waffen SS.[36]

      SirVixIsVexed Whatever you say man, the only reason various countries would fight for the side of Ukraine is for *money* as mercs or as extremist fascists. You've got rebels saying that they feel they have fought half of Africa because of all the black people they have fought which have never been in Ukraine before. People from around the world want to fight for the rebels because they are some of the only people strong enough to stand up to the guard dog of the IMF: NATO. Some of the peoples fighting for the rebels include Russian, Chechen, Greeks, Ossetian, Polish, Hungarian, Serbian, Latvian, Belarusian, Uzbek, French, Italian, Spanish, Armenian, Jewish, Colombian, Brazilian, and even American in international battalions. You *clearly* have absolutely *NO* idea of what is really going on there do you?

    • @hamsterman32
      @hamsterman32 Před 9 lety +1

      SirVixIsVexed
      I don't watch RT which itself caters to a Western audience. The separatists are true rebels, which stand up for what they believe in and are observant enough to see that they are fighting the right fight, protecting their homes from people who actually identify as nazis. If the rebels were shelling their own towns then the citizens would long have realized this and you would not have pictures of entire columns of destroyed Ukrainian armor in the middle of open fields. Maybe you would care on filling me in on the diversity of the Pro-US troops who blindly fire at civilian areas with ballistic missiles, MLRSs, and aviation. You think the US didn't cause any people to join the other side after being responsible for over a million dead civilians and ruining the land with depleted uranium munitions in the middle east?

And this data is provided by official youtube channels of those batallions and in Ukrainian Mass Media. The rebels are not ideal but Ukraine forces are not ideal too. • @davidnissen1
      @davidnissen1 Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, Crimea was always part of Russia. Soviet premier S Khruschev handed it over to the Soviet Republic of Ukraine (which was not an independent country) in 1954. There was no discussion or reference to the population of Crimea and the handover was an illegal act by the Stalinist government. The Russian premier was himself a Ukrainian and did so for personal reasons. After the fall of the USSR, the local Crimean parliament held two referendums to return to Russia but both were ignored by the Kyiv government. It was only after the illegal coup by fascists in Kyiv backed by the USA that the Crimean parliament again voted to return to Russia that the overwhelming majority of Crimeans were backed by Russia and the Peninsula was returned to the Motherland. It was NOT an annexation but a democratic decision by the people.
      Russia always had a standing military force in Sevastopol of 25,000 personnel and did NOT invade. The legal standing force simply asserted its presence.
      As the threat of attack by the fascist forces was a real danger the population was quite within their rights to act. The population of Crimea today is safe from attack unlike their comrades in Don Bas who have been murdered by the Fascist Azov forces from Kyiv.

A persons opinion is the person's opinion, yet when it is incorrect, I would expect Vice News to clarify these matters or not even show them. Comparing Ukraine to Palestine is a statement which should have caused the reporter to interfere. (Mariupol resident statement at 07'49")
    Both countries are fighting for their sovereignty, yet atrocities and support are different from each other. In Palestine, there is no direct support from the 'Western Countries' to be seen, yet Ukraine is being supported by the Western Countries.

It's exciting to watch bombs fall near a journo/soldiers but it actually doesn't say much beyond the obvious. It was good to see them going back to the other side. Beyond the political moves and dogma of the big fish what's most interesting to me is how the local peoples and community are feeling and reacting - and these are the ones having to live with this war. I hope vice gets more coverage of the pro russian areas and talks to the people there. Putin and the DNR leaders may be cunts but the people in the eastern/southern ukr. areas have genuine reasons for preferring them over the foreign western leaders of their country. Already around 700 Russian soldiers have died in Ukraine. The Ukrainian military is directly fighting the Russian army at this point and mercenaries who are bing paid. Very few of the Separatists are actually from the DNR and most or simply paid mercenaries.

    I have a question for Russian citizens: Wind the clock back a year ago or so when this whole conflict began, and any Russian will tell you that there was no Russian military support present in the region. Since then, Putin has been involved in numerous relations with Ukraine, namely things like the ceasefire that was announced for the 14th of February. So my question is, if there were/are no Russian forces present in the region to begin with, why does Mr. Putin need to be involved in any of these actions? In other words, was your government lying before, or are they lying now? Just want to get all the facts straight.
