Howdy, folks! It's Steve1989 from mreinfo.com here with a rare and very interesting South African Defense Forces "Rat Pack" 24hr Ration here. I had a great time with this one, and I hope you all do too.

I served in the old SADF 5 signal regiment aswell as 55 light armor regiment. I was deployed in Southwest africa ( Namibia )
aswell as in katlehong. ( A South african township in the gauteng province of South Africa ) We only got a ratpack every 2 to 3
days and believe me we made them last. Have you ever suffered from salt deficiency? Believe me the cramps in your joints make you want to go throw the roof at times. We also had cheesies ( A small tube of cheese ) and some flavour energy bars.
I think one flavour was rum and raisin. We called the biscuits " Dog biscuits." The Chlor floc was a life saver especially during
ops when you were in bush for up to 3 or more months at a time. with very little water, let a lone clean water.
P.S Be thankfull you didn't get the canned curry fish in your pack, if you would have eaten that I think your viewers would be sending you R.I.P message now. LOL = P (JK )

I was in the SA Marines (Amphibia Unit) from 1986 to 1988. We use to call the drink bags 'condoms'. We used to mix the drink in it, tie off the top, and when its ready to drink you bite off a bottom corner, and drink it that way. We use to eat the porridge the way from the 'condom'. The porridge was similar to a South African cereal brand called Pronutro. The porridge was much better with milk. The best energy bar was the Rum and Raisin bar. They were pretty good.

The supplier that provided the dry fruit bar for the ration packs was Safari. Still today one of the most popular suppliers of dry fruit and dry fruit sweets and bars.
As an SADF member drafted/conscripted for 2 years of "National Service" July 1982 through June 1984, these Rat Packs were all I ate whilst out in the bush. As I recall we had the ones similar to the box on the right, marked as Monday, Tuesday etc. . They didn't taste that bad really and one could always trade with your comrades. The contents were slightly different to the one discussed in the video.
Only 28 years past expiry date, 7 October 1988 was expiry date. Matches were made in the Lion Match factory near me, and were supplied as specified without the label. Most common versions of those I got were the 7 day ration packs, which had a meal for 7 days in them, In the same box. the cans were not at all bad when still fresh. You got the 2 you have, plus a few extra types like canned pilchards, veg Briyani, curried beans and chicken ala king. Came with a lot of flame tablets, so you could cook the can before eating, and use the can as a coffee cup afterwards. Designed for a 10 minute meal stop. Dog biscuits have changed, they used a hard tack double baked biscuit, which we figured could do double duty as armour. The plastic baggies were despised, but were useful if your canteen was still full of water, mostly to soak the doggibix.
Literally the most interesting channel on the tube. I have no idea where my obsession with MREs and rations came from. I served for 4 years and still loved them at the end. Steve just makes a great host too. Nice!
I remember my father bringing three of these ratpacks home for myself and my two brothers when he came to visit us in Aug 1988. He died in a car crash the following day, he was only 29. Watching this video made me remember.....

The rat pack in the green cover was not issued to the SADF troops. This was packaged specially for 32 batallion troops, which consisted predominantly out of Portuguese speaking (black) troops. The rat pack with the prodominantly white packaging (the one on the right in your video) was issued to the rest of the SADF which contained a much wider variety of food items. Also just a FYI, the SANDF only came about in 1994 after the general elections.
All in all a very informative video, thank you very much. Brought back some good memories.

@ 8:32 where water is added. that porridge is known as pronutro. and for each cup of it you require at lease 2 cups of milk (or water in this case) to make it mix well. and even after that. you will find a dry spot

My dad was in the army - and fought in the border war back in the 80's. He is black and fought on the SADF side. He used to bring me these Rat Packs - and I Loved every one except Rat Pack #4 - the one with the fish. He'd tell me about the war, how the SADF ploughed through the Cuban, Russian and enemy front-line while I sat there listening wide-eyed sucking creamy cheese and nibbling on those dog biscuits...
Apartheid was bad. And yes, sadly, there is a bit of reverse apartheid happening in this country... It's like Orwell's book, Animal Farm happening, where the pigs in the end started looking like the humans... - "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others" ...but let's not go there. Let's chat about the food. Let's hope this beautiful country doesn't become as rancid and putrid as the beef and beans tinned vomit you just opened.
As mentioned, the cookies were called dog biscuits. Though the tinned food looks pretty horrible now, we have to realise that it's over 28 years old. There's even bits of rust on the cans. I recall them being decent enough to eat (except that fish crap in RP#4-- probably made of fish testicles , whale snot and sardine semen).
There was a better candy bar - rum and raisin I think - which was WAY better.
I'm not sure why these have Spanish (or french?) inking on them. The ones I recall were in English and Afrikaans. I've just ordered a RP online - let's see. I'll also have to rummage through old photographs to see if I've taken any pics back then. The coffee always was horrible. Some RPs had powdered tea in it as well. It tasted like sweetened muddy water that King Kong farted over.
There are supposed to be fuel tablets in the pack. I didn't see them. Once lit, they'd burn for either 30 seconds or ... well, let's say, Legend has it that some lit in 1986 are still burning today. Personally, I think, they contain jet fuel, goat nostril hairs and powered split atoms.
There's also supposed to be canned 'Bully beef' (corn beef?). And some weird looking contraption I could never figure out how to use - but I think it was the can opener.

I served in the SADF, 1986 - 1988, then camps 1989, 1991 and 1993. We had the rat pack that was wrapped like the one on the right, but it only had numbers on, 1 - 7 if i remember correctly. I think number 3 had the fish and rice which was a gut killer.
It's surprising how far those rations could be stretched once you learned some recipes and got used to them after a few days. We always ended up with leftovers that we'd take home for the family to try.
If I recall It was no 5 that was most sought after - the ones with the smoked viennas 😂 👊🏻

The next day, my shit was bright yellow and my puke (bile) smelled like tuna. They cas-evaced me; my first camp, 1989, Pongola.

@steve1989 MREinfo, really enjoy your videos! I really like how you archive these videos its kind of like a taste of military history and we get to taste it right along side of you. A lot of the old rations and military food stuffs have gone bad and with out someone tracking down and finding the good ones and then sharing them being eaten no one would have known what it was like. You could choose to eat them alone and keep the experience for yourself but the fact that you share this unique educational experience with all of the world leaves me grateful knowing that future generations will at least be able to imagine these jems of history and its struggles for that I want to thank you.

In keeping with the MG theme, I think this ration would've been something similar to what Grey Fox/Frank Jaeger would've eaten, in his last pre-Cyborg Ninja days ;) .

I enjoyed them a lot and it was far better than the kitchen's food, trust me.
I received two in 2016 and had the privilege of eating it with my 9 year old boy - I have since designed and packed my own to use when we go out camping or for SHTF scenarios.

You can really tell that this is an older Steve MRE unboxing. Not just the lack of 'catchphrases' but stuff like using cold water to make the coffee, the spoon issue, etc. He's clearly getting more familiar with his craft. I love watching the evolution of CZcamsrs' channels and seeing what level of polish they rise to, or fail to rise to, and sometimes evolve into something completely different from what was initially planned. And interesting ration too! I am also getting addicted to seeing some of the really rare or no longer existing nations' ration packs, and seeing just how different the various cuisines of the world are. I'd really like to see more mid-African nations' MREs, but the people over there need them alot more then us fatcat first-worlders do, so I quite understand how and why they are rare.
Watching 6 year younger Steve really shows what perfecting your craft looks like, even these first few videos you notice all the improvements he makes. Great job Steve, you earned all your vary loyal subscribers. Don’t forget to give this man a thumbs up.

Hi Steve ,thanks for showing the SADF Rat Packs ,the plastic bags inside was always used for the porridge(pap)to mix easy and on the go ,the dog biscuits ,expand when you place it in water ,and can also make burgers with this ,the chicken biryani and steak and onion was not the favourite amongst the troops ,bully beef and the cheesy on top of the dog biscuit ,was normally the way to go ,the energy bars came in different flavours like rum and raisin,caramel,chocolate ens ,the earlier Rat packs used to have condensed milk as well ,the one that you are showing must be old and was not stored properly,can last long ,but i would not suggest you try the biryani and steak and onion now ,will end up in hospital ,thanks for the review ,good memories

I was a PTI and Instructor in the SADF for 18.5 years since 1979. I was kept alive by these rat packs for many years during the war in Namibia and Angola. Ratpacks was marked from#1-#5. #5 was my FAV. Once you get the hang of making your drinks in the condoms/plastic bags, it was done in a jiffy closed eyes. Make a knot, Turn it upside down, bite a whole in it, and whalla. Porridge was made in the same bag it came in. The tins was cooked on the esbits. You never took it out of the tin. Waste of time. That dog biscuits was my absolute FAV. If you soak it in water, it will expand to 2x it's size. Rum and raisin energy bars was tops. Beans, peas and viennas in ketchup/tomato sauce was also a big fav. YOU REALY GOT AND OUTDATED ratpack. Dangerous to eat.
