• Opening 1959 Survival ...
Hey there, everyone! Steve1989 from MREinfo back here with a 1959 DoP (Date of Production) Royal Canadian Air Force Food Packet, Survival FP-3 up for a thorough review.
There is the good, the bad, and the ugly on this rare gem.
Very unusual Ration with some scary taste tests - the thing is 56 years old and has certainly passed it's prime!
I was unable to find any real concrete info on this Ration, so if anyone has any, please let me know! :-)
I hope you folks enjoy the video, and for some reason. I even threw in some strange tunes in the end credits - I felt it sorta fit with this weird old Ration - I think the bad jelly bars really got to my head if anything and having skipped dinner, perhaps my judgement has been clouted with only running off of some bad 56 year old calories. hahah! Probably just going to stick with no tunes or something a tad less bizarre next time for end-credits music. Unless someone actually likes that stuff - can't really imagine that though.
A special thanks to everyone off MREinfo and their support throughout the years, and now on CZcams with this huge influx of subscribers no thanks to that very kind shoutout and sharing of the Christmas goodies from Gschultz9 - you are an inspiration and good friend. Thank you so much! And thank you to gundog4314 for all your inspiring support as well - between you guys and the folks on MREinfo, I feel like it is a massive driving force for me to share this stuff with you and the rest of the people interested in getting to see what is inside the oldies - and occasionally taste testing the stuff that's not too crazy looking/smelling! hahaha!
Anyways, hope you guys like the video and I will try & have something new coming up every day/evening for the next few days.
Thank you for your kind support.
-Steve
LET'S GET THIS OUT ONTO A TRAY, NICE™
NICE HISS™
I'LL BE COMING BACK AT YOU WITH SOMETHING NEW OR OLD, ALRIGHT COOL SEE YA™
"I'm not a coffee drinker"
2015 Steve was so innocent.
His love -Coffee, Instant, Type 1 - has yet to be discovered. Watching that romance happen is beautiful.
That coffee instant was NOT quality.
Lolol
Lmao
2021 watching innocent 2015 Steve
"That guy that ate the WW2 cracker? I think he's awesome."
Steve never realized he would become even greater than that
The civil war hardtack was a good sign
I love old school MRE's. They're just candy and cigarettes, and sometimes amphetamines.
@@user-il9ze9py8c lolol you aren't wrong
Who was he talking about ?
"This is one of the more gruelling experiences I've had with.. OH THERE'S ORANGE!" Had me in tears.
He just keeps on going XD
I thought he was gonna heave after the cherry
"I'm not testing it... it's just salt... Ok, I will..." You consistently overrule your best instincts in the pursuit of knowledge. Kudos!
"Actually, that smells kinda good... What's wrong with me?" LOL
James Y lol @ 7:26 or so.
9:15 the irony of going back to watch an early Steve1989 unboxing and hearing him say he's 'not a coffee drinker'. ;-)
"oh yeah, cherry, with a hint of-*gags*"
and this, ladies and gentleman, was the moment this man regretted his life choices.
As soon as I read this comment, this part of the video showed up.
im fckin crying
Lol!!
This is the moment Steve's stomach became a legend. It's how he was able to continue eating 160 yr old meat cakes and hardtack crackers lol
"The absolute essentials for the Canadian army!"
*Turns the can upside down*
*Candy falls out*
Canada! land of the happy eh
yep they used gravity , they found it works
Don't forget sugar cubes
Sometimes being a Canadian is way too fun, that aside though I love that the Canadian Ration is jammed with candy.
Candy is essential for our Canadian bodies to function... our bodies are 20% candy, and 10% maple syrup.
You can tell it's Canadian from the white hockey tape on top.
hockey puck and maple syrup in the survival kit lol
I love Canada.
eh?
I couldn't stop laughing at how fast it went down hill @12:15
Hi Steve, one of my client used to be in RCAF during the cold war and he remembered this ration well. He told me that he only end up eating the jelly bars instead since they were given those as food ration during Arctic and jungle training, and he prefer real food when he can to have better survival experience. Apparently they were give some jelly bars without rest of the content and survive on that for few days so they can experience what starvation feels like. Thanks again for helping him re jogged the memory lane and told me more military stories.
Even the older video from Steve before he's locked down his signature reviewer voice and format (It even predates 'nice hiss', and this can had a top notch hiss!) you can't help but just sit back and enjoy the awesomeness. /salute
“Ouuu, did you hear that”
Replaced by the trademark
“Nice h I s s”
Several of my great uncles were in the RCAF. I think I remember them talking about those "coloured cubes" and how they are meant to be mixed with hot water; like a hot juice with electrolytes.
That would explain why the jelly cubes were weird tasting, they are meant to be watered down.
Those water sterilization tablets are important for melting snow into drinking water. Most Canadian hunters are familiar with those water tablets. You get matches with other essential gear and that is why our food rations don't have fire implements in them.
PS: Those aren't M&Ms, in Canada we call those "Smarties." Which are candy coated chocolate much like M&Ms.
18:43 "I'm sorry guys if you think I'm going to eat this, I cannot eat this" to "Looks like beef jerky from here" which led to "Nice, *choking*no, no god no." I didn't think you'd do it, you did it you took one for the team. @Steve1989 MREinfo you are a legend.
🤣🤣💀
i commend you on donating your second set of rations to museums! excellent!
The chocolate candies are called smarties here in Canada
Do you eat the blue ones last?
American Smarties are like solidified flavored suger tablets.
Like your "Rockets"
We have smarties in South Africa too. Yum yum
"this kinda smells good, ughh what is wrong with me",i was laughing so hard
LOWRIDER 702 i know right 😂
Not hearing his trademark "Alright, let's this out onto a tray." "Nice!"is so weird and I'm uncomfortable. So iconic. XD
AND he sounded different too, & the music! Maybe it was his unidentical twin brother...
@@redwingrob1036 it was an early steve
@@neillp3827 WOW! Proto Steve1989 a collectors item.
19:00 absolutely killed me man... "Let's try a little bit.... ohhh... ugh... OH NO"
+Steve1989 MREinfo I am excited... keep it up
I love how progressively over the years, you've become a vintage MRE/Rations coffee and cigarette connoisseur. Thanks for sharing all of these awesome historical experiences with us Steve!
Aww I missed, its on my floor
EAUGH. -Steve
My favourite part.
Wait a minute those aren't water purification tablets THOSE AR- "nice nice nice nice nice NICENICENICENICE!"
"I'm not a coffee drinker" Fast forward to Steve getting SO EXCITED over a can of coffee instant part II
It’s “Type 2” smh, what a rookie Steve viewer thing to say
Not a coffee drinker?!?! Things have changed.
" i watched a guy open a ww2 ration and he ate the crackers i really like that guy i thought what he did was so cool and very noble" Fast Forward to 2022 Steve you have surpassed your idol and are THE MAN of Rations,MREs from 1800s (hardtack), 1906: british shredded beef, K rations, C rations, even the Vomlet... your a legend in every use of the word Steve!!!!!
Lmao sooooo... I subscribed because of the way you described how it smelled. I can't stop laughing. "What is wrong with me". I am crying lol
Coming back and seeing old steve videos its so different. He has so many signature catchphrases now
"oh gross! what is this? dig dig. ugh! snif snif. Hey that smells kinda good..."
You sir are a RIOT!
reminds me of a dog. xD (in a good way)
2 weeks on CZcams and already 350+ subscribers, a plethora of great videos, and already in my top 5 favorite channels! Awesome man!
IDK why I'm addicted to your videos it's so therapeutic after a long hard day of life nothing soothes me more than watching you eat really old food and call it nice wow as sick as it might sound sometimes after a really good video I raid my cabinets looking for something old and expired and dare myself to taste it no luck with that as of yet I'm a vegetarian and I have some old expired Tofu I've been holding on to one day I might be brave and give it a taste and hopefully not die
Poetic Blue don’t eat expired tofu! It’s really nasty 🤢 after it expires, and can make you sick.
Love the vids I have started from the beginning. Look forward to binge watching 4 years of videos
Nice!
Hello From the Future! I LOVE the music at the end, I'd like to hear more of the track.
I don't know what happened, I was watching Ashen's videos and I kept getting Steve's videos as recommendations and I'm hooked! I was an army brat, my dad would give us his MRE's to eat sometimes, great memories, cool to see how it was done last mid-century.
I like how he says "nice".
Otherwise I cannot explain why I find these videos so utterly enthralling.
Yeah he's a pretty cool bro, sounds Californian, might not be but he's got that dude vibe going. I love it when he says "Let's get this on a tray...nice!"
The way he pronounces 'sugar kewb' suggests he may live somewhere in the Pacific Northwest.
aw shit he lives in florida!
nice!
The candy still cant be older then the werthers you find in your grandmas purse
Haha
Do you have wertherd in the us
The commentary is so amazing on all of these videos. He has me dying with all of the noises he makes: Nyuh, ahw, nice, ghew
Best channel on CZcams. He's hilarious 😂
He is funny af but doesn't try to be
+Poundcake lmao right I can't stop watching 😂
agree, he's addictive!
I love it when Steve tries to stay positive amidst the nastiness of the food coming out of these things.
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. ~Albert Einstein~
I was really impressed with the amount of food crammed into a spam can. If that was fresh it would make a nice bailout kit to keep an aviator alert for rescue.
I really love the community you guys have. The communication and exchanging of MRE's along with the videos.
I come from the future, and Steve nowadays really embraced the Insanity I guess
I have been catching up with all of Steves videos, love these older ones so much.
MRE:*Psssss*
Steve:woah did you hear that?
Me: where's the "nice hiss" :'(
Thing he starts doing later
Steve, I used to work at the Museum of Army Transport when it was at Flemingate, Beverley in East Yorkshire. In the archives there we had several tins of self heating soup, from memory (this was about 1994) there was mock turtle and some chicken or mushroom. Each can had a candle inside acting as the heating element. I always had the thought of having one but then again rather naughty being as they were part of the collection! There were other rations there such as survival cans etc.
Other highlights there included the full set of railway training kit which was mainly either purpose made or Hornby O gauge, had Baden Powells dog cart from the siege of Mafeking, there were weird prototype vehicles, a couple sets of the WW2 infrared system Tabby, and for me the best thing a trunk containing the entire history of a single Home Guard battalion, including tactical maps, photos etc. That unit had more BARs than your typical US Ranger unit! (British Home Guards used a lot of .30 cal kit)
Reddit brought me here. You have an incredibly soothing voice dude, please keep talking about anything.
Hahaha, after watching the more recent videos and coming back to this older one.. Ah, Steve, you've come a long way in your reviews. You seem much more serious in your new videos versus here when it seems like light-hearted fun :)
one of the best hisses I've heard on this channel and he doesn't say "nice hiss"
Great job Steve! Your fun to listen to and knowledgeable as well. Looking forward to watching more.
There's a definite evolution to your videos. Your channel gets better and better, bud.
The wire lets you hang the can over a fire, rather than setting it by the coals. It would only take a stick and that wire to suspend it. Great vid bro! I love all yours.
*****
Absolutely steve, I've watched all your uploads at this point. Looking forward to some more!
holy cow ure gonna get sick........Nice
in Canada those arent called m&ms THEY ARE CALLED SMARTIES sorry about the caps locs ,,, ya but they are the same type of thing chocolate with a cover , we eat the red ones last ,,, thanks for the great video s you put up i watched them all and really enjoyed them i subscribed
no capslock is important i literally screams "THEY'RE SMARTIES!" at the screen. had no idea I was that passionate until that moment. those sir might be some of the oldest smarties in existence.
we have both
Andrew Timothy
I get excited about my candy coated chocolate, bro.
When the reports started coming out about kids in the USA "smoking smarties" I first read about it in a newspaper and couldn't figure out how they were smoking our candy coated choco smarties, nor why they would want to.
r
He said, "I'm disgusting" hahahahahaha, priceless. Who knew that years later, these rations would be the source of so much laughter?
The m&m's look more like smarties
Where do you donate your items, which museum?
CptCanada there is a MRE museum trying to daisy money for property. Believe described on MRE info.
Do they still make those? We have smarties here, but they are like pixie sticks in tablet form.
Yeah, in Canada Smarties are a candy sort of like M&Ms (which we also have). Those pixie stick tablet things are called Rockets here.
Yeah, the colours look more like what you'd see with Smarties
I scrounged a few of those back in the 70's when we were changing them out of the seat packs for fresh ones. They were dated mid 60s as I recall but were pretty much the same as in this clip.
Steve: I slammed my face in a dumpster
Me:What the freak?
Excuse me who the hell says "what the freak"?
Sam Flint and my little brought when he was 12 and not wantin to cuss in front of sister
Never can go wrong with these ... Just what I needed on a Friday night.
7:55 Good old salt, saving food in every way you can think of.
Putting your body on the line for our entertainment, Steve you ARE a hero!
you need to put a camera pointed to your face cause I want to see your facial expressions when you bite into those jelly bars hahaha
***** Thanks for the speedy reply! Can't wait to see more videos on you man
I like your speculation on a survival scenario. Brings it all to life! Feels human. I'm there! Great stuff!
How can someone NOT be a coffee drinker. Coffee is love, coffee is life!
This is such a great youtube channel. I have been burning through these today and they are fun as hell to watch. Thanks for posting!
initially thought there was no way in hell I was gonna watch this whole thing (25 minutes??) but wow. subscribed
Its really cool that Steve donates a lot of things instead of hoarding them which means it really is about the videos and the experience of sharing it
all Steve does is share he really cares about this stuff and history
dude you're the most relaxed human ever! thanks for the great videos and the great vibes🗿💨!
I love listening to this guy go "What is wrong with me? Why do I like that smell?" because I'm sitting here thinking "What is wrong with me, why am I watching this?"
Just to add, the Canada ration pack comes standard with a foot massage and a goose feather pillow
Cameron Baker Untrue. Comes with a hockey puck filled with smarties, maple syrup and moose antler dust.
lololololol, this is quite possibly the most entertaining survival ration tasting I have seen yet and I have been to many channels. I have never laughed so damn hard at any other ration video. You sir are one ballsy guy, tasting that fruit cake that looked like old beef jerky, I am surprised this did not put you in the ER. Thanks for the entertainment and for a look back in time with old rations. :)
Sorry if I laughed so much at your misfortune in this video but your reactions were just.....perfect.
+Steve1989 MREinfo I guess what really got me was the fruit cake tasting, after you tried that small little piece and about went into meltdown mode and started repeating NO.....NNNOOOO...NOOOOOOOO! I just lost it, probably the most perfect reaction to bad ration food I have seen. Referencing 18:53
BTW a few of the other channels I watch are Kiwi Dude, Gundog4314, and now you. :)
19:50 voice change, that food affected you more than you know.
Crazy to watch this back an steve saying hes not a coffee drinker but is always his favorite part of rations now... And old cigarettes
Please do more reviews haha I'm addicted to this channel
Its fun to see how much better youve become at making these videos Steve from back when you made this one.
at 6:40 just close your eyes and listen 😂
xD
@TJ when do we open them?
United Gaming Network should be good now mate
Tj Yuck!
continued at 19:00
Why was this so hard to stop watching?? Saw a post on reddit and wanted to see what the fuss was about. So unexpectedly entertaining lol. Subscribed.
Seriously my new favorite channel. You are a character man, I love it, you'd be my buddy in a heartbeat.
+gogglespisano24 Steve is one of the coolest CZcamsrs out there :D
Steve1989 MREinfo I'm digging all of your video's subscribed keep up the good work bro
Five years on, this is still one of the best!
15:43 Steve became the Angry Video Game Nerd for a brief moment. :P
10:43 mark you talking about the get me up moving tablets. And 18:06 he had a flashback of something lol
"aw i missed! Its on my floor!"
one of the best reviews u've ever done! :D loved it!
Likely smarties instead of M&Ms
These are the type of reactions you just can't properly convey in a written review! I've eaten some questionable food in my days, however you beat me without a doubt!
The dry soup mix packet is actually a good idea. I would love to see a modern day variation added to our military issued MREs. A good hot soup broth would be have been a dream right before morning patrols.
+Steve1989 MREinfo Well no "fresh" food except for the Cheese and Veggie Omelette. I would take a vintage ration that might be rancid over one of those snot colored disgraces to food. Hated when ever I got stuck with those in my first year in. Even when you are hungry they don't taste any better.
While in Afghanistan I ate British 24 hour rations until we devoured every one left on the FOB. Aside from the cheese looking like sun lotion, there were some great items, one of which was their soups! Was perfect on a cold night! I think a salt free powder instant soup mix would be perfect. That way you could salt to taste, or add no salt if as you said water is scarce.
They should let some of us make the menus. Some things make no sense, even from a cost standpoint.
why was there only one orange ? lol
I was asking myself the same thing.
Because no one likes orange...
Nathaly racism
"Its just a can full of candy"
"Ahh chicken soup"
Legend
Hey it's me from 2 yrs ago
Lol I hope you spit most of that stuff out! That was incredibly deteriorated and un-edible.. Makes for an excellent and entertaining video though lol. Would've been nice to see a couple of cigs in there! Good amount of stuff in there..
Probably one of my favorite videos from you. Just funny how your videos have evolved lol
if you use wd-40 it will take the glue off without damaging the finish Steve
"I'm not testing it....okay I will." Lol, love these videos for sure.
Based profile pic
When Steve still had hair on his arms. Lol
Agreed. Love the fuzzy Steve.
"We crash landed and will probably die but, at least we can taste the rainbow over here!"
i think he was thinking maybe water tablets was amphetamine tablets
That hiss is just so fulfilling.
Interesting, its basically a time capsule.
After watching a number of your videos I wonder how interesting it would be to compare one of these old survival rations to a new one to compare and note the similarities and improvements. I wonder how improvements to technology has changed the extreme emergency survival rats like these.
This video turned from interesting to hilarious! Hahaha xD
Hahaha, keep em coming brother!
When Steve says something has gone bad, you know it’s bad 😂
You thought the water tablets were a ten pack of condoms
+Steve1989 MREinfo I was thinking of meth myself, since it was an Air force set.
I think those were removed from the seat packs every two years, now, imagine you are a pilot in the RCAF in those days. You knew if you had to bail out, putting yourself into a survival situation knowing you had to survive on the contents of that can because you had been on the "Downed Pilot course", you bet you would make sure you were a damn good pilot.
Those are Smarties not M&Ms. Though similar.
Steve I freaking love the way you describe things haha. Love the vids man.
We know what you're talking about. The old legal meth tabs lol
such an awesome video, i find the way they produced things back then fascinating, the packaging and everything. Thanks alot for shareing your interesting treasures
