  • There should never be a doubt that Jeff Gordon is one of the greatest if not the greatest driver in NASCAR history. But there are some times more than others that show why he is such an amazing talent. In April of 2005 at the Martinsville Speedway he had one of those moments. After falling three and a half laps down early in the event Gordon scraped and clawed his way up to one of the most impressive victories in his career. This is Jeff Gordon’s greatest comeback victory.

I make arguments for both sides of this topic for Bill and Jeff's wins.
They are both impressive to me. But....
Jeff had the Lucky Dog to his aid.
And Elliott had his brothers engine's before the restrictor plate era.
Jeff was phenomenal at Martinsville. Never had a DNF there. And 23269 of 23390 laps completed (99.5%)
And for Bill, it's not just as simple as driving with your foot to the floor at Talladega like they do now a days. You were going 20 miles faster back then on top of driving over bumps and fear of blowing tires out due to the wear on them.
      Both gentlemen are Wheelmen.
I'm just playing both sides of the fence. They are both impressive to me lol.

Bill at Talladega, hands down, no question!!! Every car was wide-open with no restrictor plate, and Bill came back from almost 3 laps back, 6 miles, and without a caution flag.......It was like Bill had the only race car in Alabama, but that's the way it was for a few years, the #9 FORD from that time, is without a doubt, the Baddest racecar, of them All!!....He was so much faster than the other cars, NASCAR would change rules all the time for the #9......answer to the question?....The #9 Sir. Thank You

This stuff used to occur a lot back in the 80s and 90s. For instance, at Dover2 in 1993, Rusty was leading, cut a tire in lap 265. He missed pit road and eventually went 2, almost 3 laps down. He worked his way back to the lead lap and won. Earnhardt and others have done this too. The newer fans are so used to the free pass that, with this race being relatively recent in comparison, people put his above a lot of the same examples.

@@darrelladams4188 I agree.

Loved this race. What is so strange to me is how bad 2005 was for Gordon (I call it Gordon's worst performance season), he still got 4 wins and would have been 5 wins had he not had mechanical failure at Sonoma.

I think Gordon’s win at New Hampshire where he was blowing steam was great and Atlanta where he lost to Kevin harvick. I was at that race and he ran out of fuel and came from 2 or 3 laps down to almost win it. That was a great race to be at. He was fast and you could see it. Atlanta 2001 biggest comeback almost winning

From a Jeff Gordon fan for life...
2005 was MISERABLE lmao besides Martinsville and super speedways, had the 2008 season not existed, this year was probably the worst... 2005 and 2008 were definitely forgettable. at least in 2010, he was competitive and running up front just never got the win.

There were several races that frustrated me bad from either badly missed setups or equipment failure, but the one that really puzzled me was the 2nd Fontana race just before the Chase started. If I remember, Jeff was actually running top 10 toward the end of the race, but a late caution fell and on the restart, he faded bad and didn’t even finish top 20. Had he held on to where he was, he may have made the cut despite that awful summer...
