I know I'm probably alone here, but I pretty much prefer the wholesome Silver-Age Batman to what we eventually ended up with.

No, you're not alone. There's something to be said for wholesome, goofy Batman over a perpetually mumbling, snarling vigilante. Of course, O'Neil's and Adams' Batman struck a nice balance. It wasn't silly but it wasn't vile and depressing either. I think the ugliest element of Batman's de-evolution is manifested in the villains. You can have credible, frightening villains without having them wearing masks made of human faces and such.
