Many years ago, I landed at Albuquerque NM for the 1st time and watched a pair of F-18's come in and OMG I thought they were going to crash! I had never seen a carrier type landing before and came away with even more respect for Navy pilots.

Now you have me questioning myself on what I actually saw! So I had to look in my old flight logbook to see if I could find a clue on what type Navy aircraft they were. I was on a business trip as a copilot that was hired to go down to Chihuahua, Mexico and pick up a just repaired C-47 that had it's tail feathers damaged by being pushed back into a hanger by a hurricane and fly it back to San Jose, Ca . We had taken airlines from San Francisco to Abuquerque, then rented a Baron to fly on down to Chihuahua. We were waiting for the rental to be ready when we saw the Navy aircraft land. This was on Oct. 25, 1974, and F-18's were not in service yet, so I am thinking they may have been F-4's. I am almost sure they were not F-14's as they were not straight winged aircraft. I would ask the pilot that I flew with about this, but he has since passed away. Thanks for your comment!

I live in the florida keys and were fishing about 30+ miles west of key west and a fighter jet flew low and broke the sound barrier none of us were paying attention and I swear the boom sounded like someone dropped a bomb by the boat it was the coolest most intimidating thing I've ever experienced, I've seen F5's F16's F18's and was lucky enough to see a pair of F22's down here in Key West also seen a Chinook flying low man they're massive, I'm just glad these guys are on our side !

When I was an F-16 crew chief at Hill AFB we had a transient F-111 go supersonic after takeoff (some type of IFE) and I remember hearing stories about hundreds of broken windows. This would have been in the late 80s or early 90s. He was taking off to the south (the normal takeoff direction) so it would have been right over Layton.

Vapor cones can be generated at very low airspeeds if the temperature and humidity conditions are right. There are plenty of videos of commercial airliners generating vapor cones while landing when conditions are close to rainy or foggy. In fact, fog is actually a naturally occuring static vapor cone, in a manner of speaking. Ask your squadron meteorologist for a rundown on the conditions that are required for vapor cone formation.

On July 28, 2011, an Alabama ANG F-16 overran the runway at Oshkosh (in front of thousands of people!). The nose gear collapsed, the intake scooped up dirt, and the airframe was severely damaged. Later that day, a vintage Navy FJ4 Fury jet overran the same runway, ending up not far from the F-16 (still embedded in the dirt). The FJ4 was undamaged and was towed away. That's the best illustration I've seen of how the Navy and USAF landing gear are designed differently. 🙂 I've got pics of both aircraft.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think most things performed in air shows have actual tactical use cases. it is a demonstration of the capabilities of the pilots and how the aircraft enables them to perform those. I always assumed the sneak is a demonstration of how pilots can use the aircraft for show of force. I always wondered why show of force can be useful in anyway until I had one of these badboys roar over my house when blue angles were in town. my whole house was shaking. Fortunately I was already sitting on the bathroom; pants was saved.

Due to my uniform I was viewing the Tbirds from a restricted area and saw a sparrow get sucked in. Highly skilled pilot pulled it up and made the runway. A crowd of people never knew they were in any danger. Bad rumor that someone threw stuff at the jet. I was interviewed by the cops (sp) and my CO had to vouch for me. When the engine was tore down the sparrow was confirmed as the object. Btw... fighter jets ain't sheet you should see what a strategic bomber can do... really make you think your eyes are playing tricks.

If someone broke my windows by doing a super sonic pass in an airplane, I'd pay for my own window & buy them a beer, because it would be awesome. I work right by the old Mather AFB, and I always hope someone will do it during an airshow or something. We also have Aerojet right down the street, and they used to make an insane amount of noise back in the day, and nobody cared, nowadays people complain about the airfield, and dragstrip constantly. It makes me wonder why they bought a house at the end of runway when you don't like airplane noise.
