  • Rusty Cooley is well known for his high intensity playing and various instructional materials. For years he has espoused the values of the "5 minute" practice method. In a recent interview (linked below), he clarified some of the questions that seem to be lingering about this method.
    That's what we look at in this video! We define the method and its parameters, as well as demonstrate what this might look like in your own practice session.
    Thanks to ‪@YesYouCANPlayGuitar‬ for the interview inspiring this lesson!

    This is one of the best tips I've come across. I've been playing for years and I'm always looking for ways to improve but mostly you follow people's advice and little comes from it. This however has produced definite results! . Makes sense, getting the motor skills reinforced by sheer repetition. I haven't done a full five minutes but I've done it getting into the boredom threshold, concentrating on smooth, tension free playing. I've done it in free time and with a metronome, short scalar pieces and legato and fingerstyle arpeggios. Will definitely keep doing this! Top stuff!

      Thanks so much! You’re definitely tapping into the same principal with what you’re doing. I personally alternate this method with metronome-based sessions. I find the “combo” method to be a great system over all.
      Keep it up!

    Hi Kelly! Thank you for the mention, sorry I'm just responding now. Took a couple weeks off the CZcams grind! Awesome awesome stuff!

    First off man great job on the video you have tons of other great stuff on your channel. Dropped you a sub. I’m a big Rusty fan and did the 5 minute timer method for awhile but I grew up doing everything to a metronome and tbh prefer it. Nothing against the method and you pretty well covered everything with it perfectly.

      Thanks a ton for that! I have to say, I also prefer the metronome method overall. However, I find that adding the 5 min method supplementarily here and there makes for a much-needed balance.
      I’m a firm believer that it takes more than one approach to accomplish that level.
      Thanks for reaching out and the kind words!

    I am using this timer technique but only in 1 minute lengths that I extend to say 2 minutes depending on the material. It’s seriously works. My am routine starts with RH only tremolo on each string for 1 minute each so 6 minutes per day. Then the entire chops is steel by Michael Manring which takes about 8 minutes ( it’s all variations of LH combinations) At age 71, I really need the routine to maintain flexibility. Thanks for the video

      Very cool! It's definitely good to have some type of routine for maintenance.

      Question, when u slow down is it still sixteenth notes at a slow tempo, ? What I struggle with is I don’t know if I’m playing sixteenth notes over the click beat .. at ur fast speed are u playing 12 notes over one click ..? Hope that made sense. Subbed on ur channel!

      Do I ever set ur metronome to different subdivisions and play on each click , or just one quarter note at different speeds.. ?

    • @KellyKGuitar
      @KellyKGuitar  Před 9 měsíci

      Good question! With this particular method, there is no metronome involved. Think of the change in tempos as a gradual “climb and fall”. Meaning that if it’s a 16th note lick, you’ll still be playing 16th notes….but you’ll occasionally raise and lower your speed according to your comfort level. As Rusty states, it’s about the sheer number of repetitions you’ll get by playing non stop for 5 minutes. The tempo changes are just to make sure you touch upon your baseline AND “ceiling” tempos in the process.
      Thank for the views….and the sub! 🙌🏻

      @satchrules101 I make sure to keep things diverse! I’ll more often play at a single tempo….but play the same figure in various rhythmic subdivisions. Quarter, eighths, triplets, sixteenths, etc.
