  • Sure, Goosebumps was creepy as a kid, when I didn't know any better. But what about now, with my superior adult intellect?! Let's take this children's horror book series way too seriously and do a deep dive into the first two stories of the series: Welcome to Dead House and Stay out of the Basement.
    The first in a series? Possibly? Adult beware, you're in for a scare!

    Man, the copies of the books you have are immaculate. Did you buy them recently, from someone who kept them all in amazing condition? Or are they yours from childhood that you kept in amazing shape? Or do they somehow still sell the older style original books?
    Wish I still had my childhood Goosebumps books, but those are long gone.

    • @JohnWolfe
      @JohnWolfe  Před 7 měsíci +667

      Thanks for noticing! Yes, the Dead House and Basement copies I have are practically unused.
      I had a few worn copies of the early books from my childhood, but I was missing a lot of them. So a few years ago, I was on Amazon and saw that someone was selling #1-12 as a package, and they were listed as "New". So I decided to bite.
      The dozen of them arrived in plastic wrap and it was like they had been stored away in a moisture-free environment for two decades or something. The pages are all still white with no edge browning or anything, and there are no creases of any kind. From what I can tell, they're legitimate copies of the books too. The Dead House one is 52nd printing and the Basement one is 16th printing according to the info at the front of the book.
      Basically, I lucked out in getting these. Whoever the seller was, they took down the listing soon after and the product page is no longer available. I dunno how they had a dozen of these books in almost perfect condition, but they were selling tens of packages of them for a few months at least.
      If we get this far in the series, by the time you see book #13, you'll start to see them in much worse condition😆But I do take good care of my books, so they won't be falling apart of anything!

      I absolutely loved this video and actually enjoyed how you had some real positive things to say about the first two entries of Goosebumps. Most Goosebumps reviewers go all-in with the Nostalgia Critic-style snark and bashing.

    • @JohnWolfe
      @JohnWolfe  Před 7 měsíci +203

      @@ElvenRaptor It has low views at the moment in comparison to other recent videos, but Goosebumps is one of those topics that does well in the long-term. 3 out of my top 5 viewed videos are Goosebumps videos, and they all started as "flops" for the first few weeks/months. I'm not worried about the video's success, there will be a part 2 no matter what. I just may not make 20 more if it doesn't pick up, that's all.
      And thanks, after I made this one I watched a couple random reviews of these two books and I noticed the trend you're talking about. I love AVGN but I think that video style has done some irreparable long-term damage to youtube "reviews" and we're still feeling the effects today

    When Amanda said “I used to live in your house,” I always took it as a hint that they may have actually died because this is what all the dead kids said.
    I pictured them not getting far in their car because they’d get really hungry and realize they don’t want food they want to eat people, so they’d end up coming back and helping start the town over.

      I love R.L. Stine and think he (and if there were ghost writers) fid a great job on so many fantastic ideas, even if not entirely original, but still crafted memorable threats & creatures......however...
      I FIRMLY believe Goosebumps wouldn't have been nearly as popular and longstanding as a book series as it was and still is, if it wasn't for all the fantastic covers the Goosebumps, Give Yourself Goosebumps books had. They absolutely grab your attention, the surreal atmosphere most generate, and esp as. Aside, how eerie or unnerving many could be!
      Both were needed to do so well, but I don't think it's out of line to say the covers did a LOT of heavy lifting. The same is said for so many 80s and 90s Horror movie VHS cover art and how they'd grab people's attention while walking the video rental stores (yea yeah old stuff xP).

    Loving this as a possible new series, and as you asked for new names for the rating systems, have you considered references to the books themselves? Shockers (from "A Shocker on Shock Street") for either the scares or shocking twists? Camp Nightmares or Phantoms for scares? Slappy's for laughs? Just a few ideas... keep up the great work!

    I legitimately NEVER comment on videos for anyone of any kind, but I can't possibly overstate how incredibly excited I am that this is going to be a series---This was such a fun watch and as someone that only read a couple of the books but had AAAAAAAAALL of the DVD's growing up (every time we went to walmart and i saw a new 'goosebumps' dvd, my parents would get it for me so i have most if not all of them now!!!), I love hearing about how the medium for these stories compare to one another and knowing that you had an adoration for this series as well is something that's.....heartwarming? That's absolutely not the word I want but I can't think of a better one rn----ANYWAY. SOOOO super stoked over this becoming a series and I can't wait for the next one! Been LOVING the non-gaming stuff on the channel and I'm glad you seem to truly be having fun with the content you're making---It really shows in the quality, my dude!! I truly loved Goosebumps as a child. I had only a few of the books but they were really entertaining reading and helped me grow my love for reading in those early years. The show was very goofy, not scary at all (unlike some of the books) but it was still awesome. Sometimes I rewatch the episodes here in CZcams, very nostalgic indeed 😁

    Goosebumps came out when i was ten, so i shared a lot of the stories and later the TV show with my younger sister (and, many years later, my own kids). The series is great for reluctant readers and kids who are into spooky stories, but not quite ready for Christopher Pike or VC Andrews. I'm only five minutes in but already so excited for this video and any sequels!
    Tim Jacobus or bust! - there's an interesting video out there about the few unpublished Goosebumps books, some of which have fully finished art by Jacobus. His style is such a perfect kid friendly variation on the pulp horror covers of the time. A master of his medium.
