    my usual method for drum brakes .. remove the hub , then assemble the shoes , springs & compensators on the bench .. then fit them as one part , re-grease the bearing ( might as well while you're there ) ..then refit hub .. so much easier than trying to coax the springs into place in-situ

    Tip for removing the retaining clips on the brakes, when you are twisting the clip with the pliers place your finger on the other side of the retaining pin (on the rear of the brake/back plate) to stop it spinning so the clip on the front rotatets and undoes, hope it helps.
    You can also get a special tool to remove/ refit the clips , its a tube with a chamfer on the inside that is serrated so it grips the clip when you push and twist it to remove or refit it, I still find it easier to use flat nose pliers myself though 👍

    I'm enjoying the MG and Luv projects ! I had a '62 Midget and a '68 B GT and I also bought a 4x4 Luv for a $100 ! The guy had to get rid of it or landlord was going to give him the boot, It was sitting in the backyard sunk to it's rims 🤭 The Luv had very low compression and I had never dealt with an overhead cam before and this was before but got it running pretty good but had gas tank rust and I rolled pinballs around in it then cleaned out then used a tank sealer called SLOSH ? Finally I put 2-6 gal outboard tanks in the bed and drove to work for awhile! Parked in the Carport and a guy knocked on the door asked about the Luv, Sold to him for money spent and a case of Busch beer and bring the gas tanks back from my boat! ✌️💜🎸 From STL Mo

    I'm glad to see new tires on the LUV. Way back in about 1977 I was bear hunting with a buddy in Colorado, up in the San Juans. We were from Oklahoma. My 75 LUV broke a camshaft while we were up on the mountain. I hitch-hiked into Pagosa Springs and ordered the new cam from the Chevy dealer there. Some other hunters from Arkansas took me back to get the cam when it came in. I had a 30 caliber ammo can full of tools that I normally carried, I replaced the camshaft up on the mountain top and drove it back to Oklahoma. My hunting buddy was a lawyer and had no idea I could do a major repair that far from home.

    Thank you for this episode about your 74 Chevrolet LUV mini truck. The shape reminds me of Isuzu Florian 4 door sedan in 1970s. Wikipedia in Japanese language describes that Chevy LUVs were made from 1972 - 1982 by Isuzu Motor Co. in Japan for GM USA until S-10 Chevy truck launch. The front half Cabin derived from FLORIAN. Truck Beds were fitted in GM factory to avoid high import tax imposed on Completely manufactured Japanese MIni Trucks in those days. Chevy LUV had minor changes with new Diesel Engine C223 type in 1981. Isuzu started to sell ISUZU PUP (identical to Chevy LUV but the badge) in USA from 1983. I enjoyed your CZcams channel very much. Please be safe and sound in your adventures.

    There used to be a tool made to take those springs off of the break shoe assemblies. It's got a cup on the end and the handle is long and has a T on the end. You would use that to compress the spring while at the same time remove/replace the spring cups/retainers. I doubt a new one has been made in 20 or more years. I don't remember seeing one at Harbor Freight tools. I ran over to AMAZON real quick because it was bugging me and I found a new fangled version called a Break Spring Compressor Tool and it's only $8 . It's not as good as the old school all metal style with the long handle that allowed you to keep your face away from the work but it's WAY safer than using pliers.

    For future reference you should be able to pre assemble the “big” springs between each shoe off the backing plate and just stretch them over top of the spindle and the wheel cylinders. Then do the small springs the hold the shoes to the backing plate. Saves a ton of time and is much safer.

I think it's a fun idea and if I can ever afford a new car, I'll do it again.

  • @pminoregon9072
    @pminoregon9072 Před 2 lety

    Oh, the way that I was taught to do the long springs between the two brake shoes is to install them first using the biggest pair of diagonal wire cutters that you can find to grip the springs and leverage them into position without any of the other stuff in place. Then you can add the various retainers and clips afterwards. The springs are hard enough that you won't hurt them gripping them with the wire cutters. This was such a common practice for Dad that he referred to the biggest wire cutters as his "brake pliers" since he never used them for anything else and it was years later before I figured out what they were actually called. We had a big family, a lot of cars, and they all had drum brakes. Most Saturdays were spent fixing one or more of those cars.

    On 24:20.
    There is always an exeption. Daf diesel type 475 had an air intake tube with an throttle valve. On both sides where airlines witch went to both sides of an membrame fitted to the fuelinjectorpump. Airintake throttle valve wide open=full fuelpump. At the moment you held it in driving posission the vacuum balanced by the engine revs(flow of air needed). Thus adjusting fuel to the road condition. It was an truckengine.
    Landrover had an 2,25 liter 4 cyl diesel.
    The throttle cabel went to the atomizer fuel pump but was linked further to an throttle valve in the airintake tube. When braking you lift the accellerator pedal, so fuelpump and valve close creating vacuum in the inlet witch was run to a brake booster.
    If its the alternator activator it is put on your key 12 volt contact. Contact on no loading light on. If you start the engine the alternator starts loading and what was an 0 volt powerline becomes a 12 volt(same on 24). Light goes out meaning1:charging
    2 bulp broken. Thats why always check lights when putting on ignition.

    Working on drum brakes suck but having the right tools for them makes it bearable.

  • @jfv65
    @jfv65 Před 2 lety

    Tip: before disassembling a drum brake make a picture after you have taken off the drum. That way you have a reference how it is all supposed to go together again.
    Front drum brakes often have 2 cylinders, that way that drum brake has 2 LEADING brake shoes which grab on the drum better then any trailing shoes can. A vehicle needs all the brake potential it can have on the front brakes because those do 75-80% of all braking effort.
    For the alt.: the circuit that is used to activate the field inside the alternator is called an exciter circuit. It's just an ignition switch contolled 12V feed which passes through a resistor like a lightbulb in the dashboard. You can also use a (ceramic power) resistor but a lightbulb doubles up as a warning light inside the car. If the alt doesn't charge anymore the lightbulb will light up when the engine is running.

    If ya'll ever want to change the front over to disc brakes, go to a 1978-80 model. It will bolt right in, just don't forget the brake booster. I know because I used to have a 1980 model that was once wrecked in the front and had the front clip replaced with a 1976 model from halfway up the wheel wells forward and 100% of the frown fenders/wings. Also there are special tools that are inexpensive just for drum brakes. One for the retention springs that looks like a screwdriver and the other "pliers type" for the return springs.
    Also, for your alternator and vacuum pump, you could go with a GM 10SI type and replace the vacuum pump with an electric one from Amazon. It's going for $65 and the part number is 20804130. If that's not enough, you could add a vacuum chamber. Just sharing information, nothing more.

    Emily you need the tool that fits over the hold down springs. Sometimes the pins spin with the spring cap. I have never seen dual wheel cylinders before. I would change both of them. Are you repacking the bearings since you have the wheels off? They also make a return spring tool that makes it much easier to get them back on. One end of the tool is for removing and the other end is for getting them back on the metal post. I guess those shoes have holes for both ends of the return springs. Is there an adjuster to set the drag?

    If you put a incandescent bulb instead of your switch it will limit the current to your alternator, which is better for it (wont burn it out). When ignition is on the 12v through the bulb to the alternator will glow the bulb, when the car starts and the alternator starts charging the bulb will go out because there is 12v from either end. Loose a fan belt or faulty alternator and the light glows.

      This reminded me of high school and a friend's luv..... I had an 1972 stepside p.u. bought it auction for 800 bucks , from the Texas state department of agriculture . 250 straight 6 cylinder oak bed, 3 on the tree.... and the factory hi lo dimmer switch by your left foot. And the state to improve gas mileage put skinny 16s on it , this was 1979...so those tires were not easy to come by then. Miss that truck.

    Blessings y’all. I had a Ford Courier, it was the same color and body style as your LUV, but the similarities step there. I didn’t know how to maintain it. I just let it slip away. I was too busy going to college to become an engineer. I also wasted a spotless, garage parked, little ole lady driven once a week to church, 65 Mustang…wasted and slipped away, into the arms of another. So sad…for me. Blessings y’all.

      Mine rusted out pretty bad but it may have been due to driving it on the beach in Galveston too much. LOL. This one is really clean alright.

    You can tie a long string on the spring to apply pressure then use a screw driver to push spring into place

    HIYA BOTH, as us way over the pond are used to diesels powering most vehicles, my Landrover turbo diesel freelander (BMW DIESEL FACTORY FITTED) I bet your glad you have a cheap mini truck to run around in now you hit with rising petrol (GAS) and diesel prices, we have been hit also with silly queues at fuel stations.. I used to run my old 1991 turbo diesel bigger Landrover on %50 percent bulk buy cooking oil %50 percent diesel plus a splash of unleaded to keep the cetain levels higher and the old landrover loved it and ran very well..NOTE not all modern diesels will do this so caution advised..GOOGLE DIESELS RUNNING ON COOKING OIL..lol thanks for the video.. I would pull those danged hubs off just to have greater access to the springs and innards. I've fought Luv springs before and I hated it LOL. KUDOS!!!

    While that little girl is up on the rack like this. Good idea to get a quart of black rust olem paint, thin it down and spray paint the underside of this trucks frame and chassis, floorboards and underside of the bed to keep her from rusting out underneath it. She's a beauty all right.

    Thanks for the video! Drum brakes really test your pliers. I love Knipex pliers, especially their water pump pliers, which are basically the best adjustable pliers ever made. My father in law got me my first one back when they were made in West Germany and it is still my go to pliers. Perhaps you can get a sponsorship? They make just about any kind of pliers (and a lot of other tools) that you could possibly need.
