    Nice job of putting in the culvert. The only thing I see I would do different is, I have found those big rocks against a plastic culvert cave wear holes in them. We always put gravel or dirt around the pipe. As you have found small pipes plug. We don't have the leaf problem here in idaho you have. Also the dirt and gravel help seal around the head end so it doesn't leak around the rocks. Every country is different so it may not be the case in New York. Keep up the good work.

    A couple of culverts were just replaced near my house on the main road. The one they replaced was 1/3 filled with rocks and smaller gravel so the pipe couldn't handle the water from the stream flowing into it. At the end of your video a big rock slipped into the pipe and I was hoping you'd look inside to see if it made it through. You could periodically use a long pole with a half moon scraper to drag any accumulated gravel out of the pipe. When filling those pipes in you could keep less gravel from entering the pipe as well. :-)

    If an area gives you trouble vis-a-vis leaves, put a concrete (as smooth as possible) entry point to the culvert. The biggest issue with leaves near culvert mouths is the fact that they tend to catch the entrance (edit: by entrance, i mean the mud - if it's slick, they can't catch and the water's enough to make them slide) (sticks too) and they end up building up. Pouring a funnel helps mitigate that. Of course, excessive stickage will clog even that, but for general purpose leaf issues, perfect.
    I did this at my property (about the same conditions, but with a small river mouth a km above that road point) and i haven't had to go clean that culvert in years with the exception of really heavy storms (mudvalanche). Really does work.
    I used plastic to make a smooth face to it. Once it set, i pealed it off.

    Andrew I’ve had a lot of experiences with the culvert pipes on our mountain road. The 14” pipe you just put in is fine. But it needs to be on a 45° angle going across the road. This way the water keeps moving faster on a 45° angle. I’m just trying to help you out.
    You do lots of great work, and I always enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the great work.

    • @ajcaiati
      @ajcaiati Před 2 měsíci

      PS: The 45° angle will help the water to flow faster, and it will also help with the leaves. The faster the water moves. The harder it is to stop it.

    The two keys to a good driveway or road is a functioning ditch, and a crown in the center to direct water to the ditches, and prevent it running down the road and washing it out. Good job Andrew. You will have done four grand worth of work with that little machine in no time.

    In the protected moraine forests in my area there is a ~10-15m long sedimentary pool in front of each culvert.
    Works well on steep forest ditches. But it does require annual cleaning of sand and leaves.
