I was fortunate to see Al several times during this period and his concerts were very intimate and sucked you into his world as he expanded the background to each song with anecdotes about them. The impact on the audience was huge and I am sure many like me could feel the effect for weeks after. Genius.
Al Stewart is a fatalist, never a big self-promoter. His attitude is that if he's good enough, people will find HIM. Thank God, many of us have. BUT, he is the greatest under-appreciated composer in the world. His shows are still wonderful, leaving new attendees wondering how they ever missed how great this guy is.
I bet many successful singer songwriters are bafled by this guys lack of mainstream success... AS is like a master poet / writer who never bothered to to get published...genius!
Dear God, this is absolutely EPIC!!!!! Even as a small child I was able to hear to heartache, drama, and even panic in these lyrics. There are great songwriters, then there are genius songwriters, then there is Al Stewart.
"Freedom seems to be everything to me" is such a great line. Everyone feels this way at some point, only to find that we have been lying to ourselves. We very much need to know that we are special in someone else's eyes.
Wow, Night of the Fourth of May... 40 years ago. I've been a huge fan of his for 42 years now, ever since Zero She Flies. Where does the time go? Talk about Time Passages, crikey.
Unbelievable!! Talk about one of the best musician/writers ever! I feel so sad for the people that don't know this man's music. From Clifton in the rain (babysitter Images) and down thorough the years, the scope and breath of his beautifully crafted lyrics and melodies are absolutely astounding! Beautiful, beautiful music!! Thanks so much for this video!
Hello I really do appreciate you for being a big fan thank you for your wonderful comments on my post it really means a lot to me.I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music…..❤️❤️❤️❤
Give what you have. Take what you need. Your time is only now. Wise words, Al. And here I am on the 4th of May digitizing 40 year old Al Stewart tape recordings for CZcams. Should've gone to Cambridge, I think I tried to raise a pound.
It appears there are a lot of Al fans here and rightly so as the man is nothing less than a card carrying genius and still going so I have a little exercise for you all. It seems simple on the surface but just try it. Name your five favourite Al Stewart songs. Go on, have a go. I stopped somewhere between 15 and 20 as I just could not decide between them. I was going chronologically and wasn't even up to Year of the Cat! Damn, I have at least five from Love Chronicles alone. His back catalogue is completely amazing. Incidentally, great recording and the sound quality is so good from that period when it could be a bit hit and miss live, even for the BBC. Thanks for that runningman.
Thanks a lot for uploading this. Over the years I've bought everything Al has done but this early song is still one of my favourites. I read that the party in question was one that the late John Martyn held in Putney

i remember him previewing this and all tracks from 'orange' lp in march 1972 at cousins follk club soho. i still see him when he s in the country. i was shocked when he announced in 75 at kings college london that he was going to live in america !
its good to see him sitting down like he used to do when I started seeing him. there was a very good version of this at cousins folk club in london in february 72. francis monkman of curved air played a terry riley style piece and john martyn in white boiler suit looked after the sound system.
@christopherfrost I am working on an Al Stewart songbook (for private use only) with lyrics, chords (and tabs for the instrumental tunes) The first three albums are ready, and at this very moment I am working on I'm Falling and Night of the 4th of May. The arrangement will be ready in about two weeks. In the meantime, check out Al Stewart.com for the tabs. It's not what Al played though, it's in D minor instead of E minor, so you will have to transpose the song.
I never really got into Al Stewart. Year of the Cat, Time Passages were basically all I've ever heard and are truly incredible songs. He is a gifted songwriter and performer.

I don’t want to touch you… somehow you feel Unclean…. PERFECT AL!
"Freedom seems to be everything to me" is such a great line. Everyone feels this way at some point, only to find that we have been lying to ourselves. We very much need to know that we are special in someone else's eyes.
A MASTERPIECE for the ages!
No-one ever did a live version of their song better than this, No- One.
Hmmm...not sure this is truly "live."
@@colebennett6424 It is definitely not the album version of the song.
Such a brilliant performance. Love the guitar!!! Great singer/song too!
Utterly compelling story telling with passionate singing and guitar playing. Wonderful performance, thanks for sharing this.

He is nothing less than the Sondheim of folk rock.
Thanks for posting this absolute gem!
I only heard this about a hour ago. And instantly, my mind was blown. Such an incredible performance and song. Al is something else.
Give what you have. Take what you need. Your time is only now.
Wise words, Al.

Fantatic song from Al's Orange album, as it was then. Love Al wish he would give us another CD.
Amen. He has written voluminous great songs never recorded, according to his lead guitarist Josh Solomon.
genius. absolutely genius! oh my goodness I'm shaking.
I can relate to this song way more than I'd like to admit.. I do love it though.
Good for you. Really.
Awesome! One of my top five Al Stewart songs.

One of my favorite songs of all time.
Appropriately, I am watching this on the Night of the 4th May. Great song.
Holy cow! Wow, I have no words to say about this. Amazed and awesome..
Master Storyteller par excellence
This incredible, breath-taking

Wow beautiful song!
Wow. And wow again. Thank you so much for posting--and so quickly!!!
Never seen a live version of this; apart from that grotesque "try AND tear down" that also appears on the album version, magnificent.
que hombre

How perfect! "Love Chronicles" and "Modern Times"--Masterpieces! He is the storyteller premiere. He is such an organic artist
. I adore him.
There is noone in the USA that compares to Albert Stewart
Why USA? 😂
It's actually Alastair Ian Stewart
I never really got into Al Stewart. Year of the Cat, Time Passages were basically all I've ever heard and are truly incredible songs. He is a gifted songwriter and performer.
Just got back from seeing him at the Buxton Opera House. Grest show full of a lot of his old songs but not this one unfortunately.
That's Alastair Ian Stewart!
he has a great gimmic history
Thanks for posting this. Where are you getting all of this great footage?
I wonder if these chords are written out anywhere...I'd love to learn to play like this
it's may the 4th right now, so i tried searching star wars songs and this what i get. good song tho XD
Interesting note about this performance: Al's guitar is tuned down a full key.
lmao did I actually write "babysitter" haha - meant "Bedsitter" of course!
Not bad Al!
I wonder if Al knows about these old videos?
How many songs has al written?
rasg er
I hear hes doing an albume about the chemicals that mad the first virus?

He was ripped off by manager, sadly. Greed. Evil.
