Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

You’ll notice that when Mr. Hanson gives his lectures that not only is he very knowledgeable and seems like he could be someone that lives next door. But in such a laid back tone, he speaks to the audience the same way he would if you were sitting down with him somewhere one on one , having a cup of coffee… like he is here. This is why I’ve always enjoyed hearing his lectures.

This man was born for such a time as this; he's someone who understands the theoretical and the practical, and can communicate with both intellectuals and the common man. He has (to quote Joni Mitchell) looked at life from both sides now, and probably has enjoyed how hands-on labor and intellectual enlightenment have played off each other throughout the years; e.g., he's probably enjoyed all the breaks from academia, by getting on his tractor, breathing in the fresh air, and taking in the good earth. In a world that too often looks down on the working class as being beneath them or unsophisticated, VDH has emerged to show (in my mind) a superior synthesis of the ideal and the real. He is a TRUE genius for our time! Beautiful presentation Hillsdale, with a very timely and vital set of messages. Bravo!

There's something quite therapeutic about operating a tractor. I used to think it was just the amount of power underneath you that you were controlling. Over time I realized it was the focus on the tractor that would cause the worries of the day to slip from my mind. I never thought about how much braces for the twins were going to cost me when I was on the tractor. I never tried to remember what the last date for making an estimated tax payment, before being penalized was, when I was on the tractor. I never worried about whether or not my loan application would be approved at the bank, when I was on the tractor. I didn't even think about how I preferred great taste over less filling. To be honest, I just focused on the tractor. It was really quite peaceful, because if I had lost that focus there are at least five different ways that that tractor could have killed me.

Well when I was 16 years old, I got my driver's license. I already knew how to drive because my Uncle Felix taught me how by driving a tractor during hay season and other things along the way. My first car was a 1971 Chevy Pickup V-8 and standard transmission, I drove it and it was time to do a tune-up and I was going to take it to where I bought it. My uncle said you will do no such thing and gave me a list of tools to buy- sears craftsmen are good. And then to Mark's auto parts for well the parts, I would need. They are still in business and I still buy stuff from them. My uncle talked me thru the whole process. It took about two hours. After that, I could do the job myself with no issue. That was then my current car you need a scan tool and not just a code reader you need specialized tools and about 6 hours to do the plugs. The old chevy would need to tune every 20 thousand miles or so, the car I have now well I had the work done last winter and by the time I will need to do it again in 100K I will have junked the car. Yeah, the world war two guys could work on the Shermans the Studebaker's, and the jeeps because they were pretty much the same as what they wrenched on as kids. In some ways, we lost that, but we are Americans and it's not like we never reinvented ourselves. I can do a lot of things on a car even today. I am thankful for the time my Uncle Felix took to show me how to do things and then watch over me doing those things. The nod of approval was the best thing because it was earned. Too many of our young people don't have that, and it's a shame. There is no room for failure these days and if you do you're done. That was not always so. I am teaching myself Russian, I learn more from the mistakes than I do when I get things correct.

@@johnmeckel2319 Equity is calculated, targeted discrimination with the goal of "evening out" everyone's achievement, but the inevitable result is limiting everyone to no better than the lowest achievers. A prime example is the "dumbing down" of education: Don't allow the motivated and brighter students to learn more faster and excel, because that will result in unequal school achievement, so lower the expectations so that even the most disinterested, laziest, and least bright students can enjoy the illusion of achieving just as much as everyone else. Never mind that they've learned practically nothing, as long as there is "equity."

Ethno-cultural nationhood as political or social preference does not necessarily have to imply 'hate' as a principle of existence. Multicultural lands or nations are often the most strife-ridden. Forcing it on nations that do not wish it and never sanctioned it politically is obviously going to cause endless trouble and division.

@@Lytton333 Very true. I think that's a large part of the reason for the intensifying anger in society. The Marxists and those wanting to, er, "blend and homogenize" the nations and cultures of the world would have the effect of not allowing any nation or society to keep their own distinct culture and values, their own distinct identity. I can't blame any nation or society for fighting back against that tooth and nail, hammer and tongs.

The man answering the door was obviously of middle eastern heritage and from his speech I guessed he was a recent immigrant. He was visibly frightened and distraught when I asked him if he had chosen who he intended to vote for. I assured him that the choice was his to make without fear, gave him some literature and wished him well. Today he would have more grounds for his apprehension.

He is so richly informed on all important issues, his being a historian shows very clearly why all of us, especially politicians should be always life long history students. He is clearly understandable and I listen to him anywhere I may see him on my pc. I have some writings of his and they are as he...so easy to grasp what he says. If I was much younger and very well off I'd like to see that FOX or some TV/Internet had him on with at least MWF evenings on current things that need to be addressed, and so much more. This man should be running for office or in a very important position of influence in the WH or Congress. By the way, where is the other fine, solid, sensible Republicans or sound Democrats...I have not seen nor heard anything from the several we still have in U.S. that are men/women who we need to have out in public, battling this WH and etc, that is doing awful things to America.
