- Victor Davis Hanson joins Pepperdine School of Public Policy Dean Pete Peterson for a four-part seminar series titled "Office Hours with Victor Davis Hanson."
This set of special interviews will explore the class "Roots of American Leadership in Peace and War" currently being taught by Dr. Hanson to Pepperdine School of Public Policy graduate students.
Victor Davis Hanson is the inaugural Giles-O'Malley Distinguished Visiting Professor at the School of Public Policy. Hanson is also the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow in Residence in Classics and Military History at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University; Professor Emeritus of Classics Emeritus at California State University, Fresno; and the Wayne and Marcia Buske Distinguished Fellow in History at Hillsdale College. He is a nationally syndicated columnist for Tribune Media Services.

I have my 13 year old son watching these episodes. He has learned more listening to VDH in 2 one hour sessions than an entire year of history classes where the teachers are shoving woke revisionist narratives down his throat.

VDH is a huge anomaly in academia. I'm very encouraged that someone like this sees through the woke BS, (astonishing BS,) and remains a learned voice for sanity, and America. Love this guy
As a soldier for 40 years from private to a senior combat officer, now retired, I am mesmerized by VDH. He put flesh and breath into the dried bones of WWII like no one I ever heard has done. Thank you, Pepperdine for this series. I think VDH, who has never been in the military, should be the Secretary of Defense or the Vice President of the U.S.A..

My dad was a medic in the 4th Armored Division of Patton's Third Army. He was in France, Belgium, etc. He was 19 years old.
Victor Davis Hanson is the greatest treasure on the Pepperdine Campus. He is very possibly the most well read and most brilliant intellectual of our time.

Patton was one of the greatest generals in American history (and arguably in history, period). And Victor Davis Hanson is one of the greatest American intellectuals today. Amazing to hear VDH on Patton, one great analyzing another great! 😊
My father landed on Omaha Beach on day 2 of the invasion. He told us about hearing Patton give a speech preparing the young soldiers for what was coming. He also said officers girlfriends were there and quickly left because of the language. Thank you for an incredible look into the intricacies of war.
Patton was in Calais during D- day to throw off the Wermacht into thinking that's where we would land. Maybe your first sentence has nothing to do with the second? At any rate, God bless your Dad. Mine was Navy.

VDH is so knowledgeable and wise, he has completely changed the way I had understood the Second World War, he is an absolute treasure.
Patton was my favorite General of WWII. He was brave but a caring man. My father in law served under him and loved him as a real leader, and a strong leader. He hated Eisenhower. Called him a clerk and weak against the enemy and unwilling to go into an area despite us being close and willing to take the place from the enemy.
Victor Davis Hanson is a great treasure of sensible, intelligent, historical knowledge.

Yet another brilliant educational discussion from Dr Victor David Hanson. As Pete Peterson states at the end of the discussion present day leaders in the west would both benefit from listening to Dr Hanson’s words of wisdom and perhaps even attending private lectures to assist in addressing the many issues they currently face.

Ten minutes in, and I'm enthralled.
I never got what was so special about Omar Bradley. He was not a tactician nor a strategist. He was a messenger between Patton and Eisenhower. They put Patton in charge of the 3rd Army because they knew he could win quickly.
Bradley basically blew off Patton when one of Patton's aides warned Patton that Germans coming through the Ardennes was a good possibility. And there ya go, Battle of the Bulge.
Thank you Dr. Hanson and Dean Peterson. I really enjoy these talks. If I lived near where you teach I'd be tempted to take your one of your classes, even at the age of 68.

An aside: I have always been struck by the enigma (to me) of Patton's remark, attributed to him in the movie, that "I can't understand why such fine young men have to die, there are so many battles left to fight".Trying to dismiss the remark by asking "What did he expect to happen in battle?" always left me feeling that I was missing something. I believe Dr. Hanson nailed its explanation for me in the passage you cited, Dean, where he writes that [Patton loved war but hated death.] It then seems to me the remark (if authentic) could be construed as emblematic of a paradox that drove and engendered a general who killed the most enemies while sparing the greatest number of American lives of any general in American history. A "blood and guts" general who also demands that his troops have three meals a day, dry socks, and mail.

he’s absolutely right furthermore i’ve evolved my thinking on our protestors. i am a staunch constitutionalist feeling that it provides the framework& enforcement for the seperazption of powers. on the other hand I believe the bill of Rights is thsoul or reason d’etre of our country, our soul the true genius of the Founders collaboration
I echo the laudatory comments others have made about this discussion.
In the book "Patton: A Genius for War" it was brought up that Patton suffered a number of serious head injuries from riding (ironically, one would cause the death of his wife) that could have led to many of his behaviors.
I dont evenike politics but I love the sound of Hansen's voice.

Thirteen minutes in, and I wonder this: Dr Hanson hasn't brought the matter up, and it may turn out not to be germane, but I wonder whether Churchill, with his penchant for the half mad but brilliant, dangerous as hell stroke, didn't appreciate Patton's similarity in this regard?

If Victor was offered the Secretary of Defense would his answer be to accept, or not. If not then why not? I would love to hear the answer to that question.
I’ve been fan of VDH for 23 years. I think he would accept his great skill is as an observer of the tragic nature of man and particularly man at war. He would say no thank you but correctly suggest the right person for that position for the times. He also understands the price he would have to pay to be spectacularly successful, tragically by his own people.
i think that everyone can realize and recognisse the added value of the professor's comments ( many thinks for the both) . he said that militaries know to do the war and politics not only a good Ceos with the required early mornings briefings not only to ordone tp analyze immediately the possibility to install a nurcery in the firm 😅😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
I have heard that Patton was quoted as having said, after Germany fell, that the Allies should continue on to Moscow, because we´ve got the armies and equipment here now and we are going to go to war with them someday anyways. First question; did he really say that? And second: assuming he did, what sort of connection can one make between that statement and what is going on today between Russia and Ukraine?
Patton sure did say that. Not only did he want to go into Russia, he toyed with the idea of taking what was left of the regular German army along. Remember, we didn't just go into Europe to stop Hitler.
We also went in to prevent Russia from possibly occupying Western Europe, after Germany was defeated.
O'Reilly makes some good points on Soviet assassination of Patton, who frightened Stalin, especially with Stalin's knowledge that we had nukes and were going to share it with them.

This is great information about Generals and war. I feel it os also placed here as flag-waving for Trump, which I think is uncalled for in this exposition. One must examine the character of a major leader in war, and in peace time, and what the real goals of that leader are.
Could have Patton been a better theater general than Bradley, or did he need to be in the field to achieve his genius as a the 3rd Army commander?

What is a Pamanondon? I know I’m spelling this wrong. Victor talk about it around 34:20 minutes in.
He speaking of his and Pattons favourite general Epaminondas the Theban who defeated the Spartans at the Battles of Leuctra and Mantinea and freed the helots from slavery. Very little known about him. VDH actually novelised Epaminondas life in the book

VDH also writes about the great Battle of Delium. “Where were you at Delium” was a stratifying question amongst Athenians. Even lesser known Theban general Pagondas. First use of napalm, cannon, napalm as cannon and elite shock troops like the SEALs or Green Berets.
