Hi, I made Sudomemo. Wow, super cool to have a video about Flipnote... that doesn't gloss over Sudomemo! Haha. Here's some corrections, clarifications, and notes ESPECIALLY on the completeness of the archive and how much of an super-duper-zooper-awesometastic guy James is.
    - Hatena Diary was closed and all of them migrated to new Hatena Blog blogs (the active blog service)
    - It's pronounced Sudo-MEH-mo not Sudo-ME-mo
    - Oh, we have all of the ones uploaded to FH, excluding any where people opted out of having them transferred to the Nintendo DSi library
    - To my knowledge there was never a star mystery pack, rather, they were sold as "star boxes" and still are. You can get blue stars from the top four boxes, purple stars from the top three available for sale, with a guaranteed purple star in the top two IIRC. I've purchased all of the different boxes at least once. You can still get them here: www.hatena.ne.jp/shop/star
    - Flipnote Studio's Japanese name is (literally) Moving Memo Pad/Ugoku Memo-chou/うごくメモ帳 but also known as Moving Notepad
    - Similarly, Flipnote Hatena's was Ugomemo Hatena/うごメモはてな
    - As far as I can tell, Gallery: Friends was closed as a precaution, I think as a PR move really, after the Swapnote incident. I've never run into any information about Flipnote Gallery: Friends being used in such a manner.
    - There are remnants of the original design in the app, such as the calendar (to which you can associate Flipnotes) which really doesn't make sense for something meant for animation, but makes perfect sense if you consider the note taking use case
    - To clarify, James' Playnote Studio is a viewer, not an editor.
    - I and a couple of the others at both Sudomemo and Kaeru were also involved in the Flipnote Switch prank. It wasn't just James, but he ended up taking the fall for it as he was the one that posted it on Twitter. It wasn't meant to blow up in the way that it did; it was meant as something to prank our communities. We used our background knowledge of the way Nintendo and Hatena work to make it very convincing, down to CI-generated build numbers in the UI, font style and whatnot, even drawing some from Sudomemo's more-distinctive "sticker" styling, along with making original artwork for it.
    - Furthermore, you have to understand that James has had an integral role in development for Flipnote-related things for years and years, including Sudomemo. He's an awesome dude and he didn't deserve the blowback.
    - Hatena works with Nintendo a lot more than you might be aware of. However, Flipnote Hatena was very much a strategy to get new users for Hatena as well as a way to break into Western markets. It didn't really go as planned in terms of retention; and while they were at first planning to work with Nintendo for the 3DS release, things fell through for reasons that I'm aware of but can't disclose.
    - Again: We have EVERY FLIPNOTE that was uploaded to both FH and FG:W (FG:W will not be publicly available, at least not at first). Unless someone explicitly opted out during the period prior to them being uploaded to the Nintendo DSi Library, which was not super common afaik, it's there.
    - This has come at a great personal financial cost to me. Donations will be accepted at some point, but I've always been iffy and uncomfortable about asking for money so that's not really happening yet.
    - You missed something right at the end ;) go to flipnote.hatena.com and look at the page source code and you'll find a special message from the developers. 🐸
Thanks so much for the awesome video

Flipnote was honestly the biggest part of my childhood, i remember showing my friends the flipnotes i had on my DSi XL and their minds were blown when i showed them the stickfigure fights that they begged me to borrow my internet connection just to see hatena. After showing them how to connect to the internet and how to use the DSi Shop we would laugh our asses off at the hilarous flipnotes all evening and be impressed by some of the cool flipnotes, coming to my house on a friday evening after school viewing through hatena then going outside playing with nerf guns and watching the new episodes of Adventure time/ Regular Show/ Ninjago etc were some of the golden days, It was really sad when it shut down back in 2013 where i knew it was the end of an era especially since me and my friends started growing up, started new hobbies, moved and went on with our lives. and just thinkin about those memories as a kid makes me shed a tear today.
I know you can get flipnote on your 3ds using my nintendo rewards but it just isnt the same without hatena and the fact that the "Dsi Library" (basically any flipnotes originally on Hatena could be found there) was only up for a limited time just makes the app feel dead.
Also im surprised famous users like Gizmo, Mcboo Blitzman, Y-Dog, Axetoday, or Nico Blue weren't mentioned here.
Sorry about the long comment, i just wanted to share my nostalgic memory using Flipnote it was a big part of my life and bought me and my friends together to have a laugh. Amazing Video dude 👍

Something I was surprised to see go unmentioned was that registration for flipnote hatena wasn't easy. I don't remember the exact details because my memory of those days is very hazy, but I remember that I was primarily stymied because you needed some kind of signed permission slip or something from your parents and middle schooler age me, who wouldn't even think of forging a signature, chalked that one up to be impossible since my parents generally didn't approve of either me or my sister being on social media/social game platforms back then. Literally everyone I knew on there was dating someone and either chatting on Hatena flipnotes or over MSN

Another one I remember had this super polished DSi menu look to it done in the web browser. It had a bunch of stuff in there like games and maybe a chat room. Though, I don't remember the details.
One more thing to add to the pile were story-time Flipnotes. Those were like the music Flipnotes where it was mostly a still image, but with stories from people. It almost felt like someone reading their diary in public. They weren't as popular, but were things I'd see on occasion.

Its so weird thinking about it now; but back then there was never really any remembrance on the community aspect of flipnote, because it was all so separated, of course you had the people who always dominated the popular pages, like Anthony, Squirt, Gizmo, BosS, there's so many names out there but there was also smaller-scale creators, groups, and drama that will likely never be resurfaced because we lost all contact with every flipnote and comment. I would PAY to see all the old chats I used to have with friends, I can't beleive its been more than 10 years already, I cherish these memories like it was yesterday.

I’m fairly sure that back in 2010 and 2011. Some channels were run by Flipnote creators. Any Flipnote creator with a bronze medal or higher could host a Flipnote channel. Sadly that ment that channels could either shut down, because they pulled the plug themselves or because they got (false) reported, though I’m not certain about the last.
For example back in late 2010, early 2011 you had the Black Eyed Peas channel. That channel was run by a popular European creator called Valentin Delattre. Some time in 2011, the channel suddenly was no more with zero announcement before or after it. It’s very likely the reason had something to do with Valentin moving on from them. Because the channel shut down more or less around the time Valentin stopped making Black Eyed Peas Flipnotes. This goes to show that I’m at least 90% sure some channels actually were user generated.

    I even made some flipnotes!
It was so sad to see it go during 2012 of February I think.
Insane to think about this being a decade old.
I think they shut it down because of the adults making adult oriented animations that WERENT for kids, I personally never saw much of anything graphic aside from battle scenes where they show blood but that’s not really the extent of what other people have seen on there.
I really feel like the hatena was like a red herring to how the internet was gonna be like in about 10 years.
Some of the jokes still land well to this day even.
Think about it, if we instantly had all this tech 10 years ago we would be feeling like we’re in the “future” compared to playing on a dsi xl which was considered premium quality high tech hardware.

As an actual animation, it would be literally a second long. The user would need to download your flipnote to actually go through the "games" themselves, which were all pretty simple. For example, find the needle in the haystack, dress-up games, mazes, shave the hair off the guy. Man!!!! What I really think needed a spot on the iceberg was chat rooms, flipnotes that would just be an mp3 and a lazy animation, but the purpose was for people to talk to each other via commenting. Hatena was where I first made online friends. I remember I would stay up talking to other kids, we'd compliment each other's animations, argue about anime dubs, complain about homework etc. While I dont talk to any of those friends today, some of them lasted years and were very important to me in a time where I struggled with irl friendships a lot.

Aww this really brought me back to those good ol days!! Question for everyone: does anyone remember "memes" on Flipnote? I ask because I genuinely could never figure out why they were called memes. So for the uninitiated, the "memes" on Flipnote were basically quizzes that people could then fill out and spin off, and I never could understand why it became known as "memes" when it couldn't really be anything further from the truth. Hopefully someone at least remembers this too and I'm not just crazy haha.

And thanks for spreading the word of sudomemo, here's hoping this video helps the site grow even more!
Also here's a bonus entry that wasn't on the iceberg:
In 2011, as an initiative for relief after the huge earthquake and tsunamis in Japan, Flipnote Hatena started a "Smile for Japan" project on the service. It added a category for people to post flipnotes to, and I recall a lot of really positive and heartwarming flipnotes were posted there. Unfortunately, I can't find it anywhere, but I remember there was a logo for the project that was the Japan flag with a white smiley face in the center of the red circle.

I use to use flipnotes hatena on my orginal dsi when I was a little guy, it sparked my curiosity and desire for illustrations, until a misshap led to my dsi never working again, for a reason Iv still never found out
So years latter when I got a new dsi, I was thrilled to find out that they had created sudomemo, for years it felt a lot like a home away from home that I was more cozy in, the creations were nice, the people were nice, I was never board, and I dident think anything could replace it
One thing I never realized growing up is just how much it took to keep it all going, being able to understand that now, after I (currently) am incapable of accessing it (Dsi has been working for years, after 13 it reaches the end of its journey) I have to appreciate what Austin buck and the others put forth for others

I had to go to my moms work or my cousins house to watch them since we didnt really have internet at home. They had a huge impact on me. Flipnote and Hatena did a lot for us who were passionate about being creative and gave us an early start and direction to the career paths we've headed onto. Even people I still keep in contact with from the Hatena days who don't create art anymore still credit our time there as being the perfect stomping ground to help us all grow. While I'm not as active in animation as I once was when originally on the site, it kickstarted my career path of being a professional newspaper cartoonist, and the main characters of my comic strip originally debuted on Hatena back in 2008.
So Flipnote never really leaves any of our hearts.
